SamMobile Daily Recap: September 7, 2017 — Galaxy J3 (2017), Galaxy Note 8 and more!

Samsung will launch the Galaxy Note 8 in India on September 12

Samsung has announced that it will launch its new Galaxy Note smartphone in India on September 12. The launch will take place in New Delhi on 12:30 PM, and there will be a livestream if you’re interested to watch the live event.

The Galaxy Note 8 could be priced anywhere between INR 70,000 (about $1,094) to INR 75,000 (about $1,172) in India, and it is being rumored that the company will bundle the DeX docking station and 100GB of additional cellular data for free with the phablet.

Last year, the Galaxy Note 7 was launched in India, but it got pulled from the shelves one day before it was meant to be made available due to faulty batteries. Now, the Galaxy Note 8 will compete with the iPhone 8 and the Google Pixel 2 this year.

Samsung takes the wraps off the Galaxy C8 in China

Samsung has quietly announced the Galaxy C8 in China. As expected, the handset is near-identical to the recently-launched Galaxy J7+, with a dual-camera setup (13MP+5MP) sitting in pride of place on the rear.

Two variants of the Galaxy C8 are scheduled to hit the shelves in the region: one with 32GB of storage, and the other with 64GB. Both sport a 5.5-inch Full HD display, a MediaTek Helio P20 processor and a 3,000mAh battery.

The only difference between the two models is that the former features 3GB of RAM, while the latter wields 4GB—well that, and the fact the slightly more powerful unit is set to carry a marginally higher price tag.

Related: Leaked Galaxy C8 press images show it’s just a Galaxy J7+ for China

Just like the Galaxy J7+, which comes with 4GB of RAM as standard on the base 32GB variant, the Galaxy C8 is home to a slew of connectivity options, including 4G LTE, Bluetooth, GPS, USB Type-C and, of course, a dual-SIM slot.

It also ships running Android 7.1.1 Nougat skinned with the latest build of Samsung’s Experience—formerly known as TouchWiz—user interface, and is equipped with a number of exciting software features, like Always On Display and Bixby.

The best way to look as the Galaxy C8 is as a rebranded variant of the Galaxy J7+, because that’s exactly what it is. There’s still no word on pricing, but we expect it to start at around ¥2,000 ($305).

Leaked Galaxy C8 press images show it’s just a Galaxy J7+ for China

The next phone to launch in Samsung’s Galaxy C series of mid-range phones looks set to be the Galaxy C8, which will be the third phone from the Korean giant to feature dual rear cameras. Today, press images of the C8 have leaked online, and as many of you will notice, it looks exactly like the recently launched Galaxy J7+. You wouldn’t be wrong, as the J7+ is expected to be launched as the Galaxy C8 in the Chinese market (the C8 would feature model number SM-C7100, while the J7+ is SM-J710.

What remains to be seen, however, is what specs the C8 will carry. The C series phones are supposed to be mid-range devices, and it’s rare for Samsung to use the same design for two devices from different price segments while changing the overall specs (unless these devices are spin-offs of each other, like the Galaxy On phones that launch in markets like India and China). Of course, the specs could remain the same as well, given the J7+ does have improved hardware compared to the Galaxy J7 (2017). Hopefully, Samsung will change out the MediaTek chip inside the J7+ with a Snapdragon SoC, as the former isn’t the best match for a Samsung smartphone.

As for the dual camera, we should see the same setup on the Galaxy C8 as the one on the J7+: a primary 13-megapixel f/1.7 sensor and a secondary 5-megapixel f/1.9 sensor, with support for the Live Focus mode that debuted on the Galaxy Note 8. A release date isn’t known, although we could see the phone go official on September 22 going by the date on the lock screen in the images. Leaked Galaxy C8 press images show its dual rear cameras

August security update now making the rounds for the Galaxy J3 (2017)

Samsung has started rolling out its first significant maintenance update for the recently-released Galaxy J3 (2017) in Europe. The upgrade—J330FXXU1AQH4—includes all of the patches included in last month’s release, as well as a handful of miscellaneous bug fixes, stability improvements and speed optimizations.

Here’s the full changelog:

  • Applied Monthly Google Security Patches (August)
  • Improved Auto Brightness Control
  • Improved PC Connection Stability

For those unaware, the August maintenance release, which started making the rounds for the Galaxy S8 more than a month ago, bundles patches for a total of 40 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures; twenty-eight in the Android operating system and twelve in Samsung’s in-house firmware.

To check to see if the update is available for your Galaxy J3 (2017), open up Settings, select Software Update, then tap Download Updates Manually. If you don’t feel like going down that route, you can wait until you receive an alert instructing you install the OTA, but that typically takes a little longer to arrive.

Time is on your side though, seeing as the Galaxy J3 (2017) is part of Samsung’s quarterly upgrade program, meaning it won’t receive its next maintenance release until December, while its flagship and former-flagship smartphones, including the Galaxy S7, are treated to the latest patches on a monthly basis.

Samsung starts accepting pre-orders for Galaxy Note 8 in South Korea

Samsung kicked off pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 8 in its home market South Korea earlier today. The phablet is slated to be officially available for purchase through stores later this month. The phone was officially unveiled last month at an event in the US.

The 64GB variant of the Galaxy Note 8 is priced at KRW 1.09 million (about $965) in Korea, making it the costliest Note series smartphone ever. The Galaxy Note 7 was priced at KRW 989,800 (about $875) last year. The South Korean smartphone giant is planning to start shipping the Galaxy Note 8 to early adopters starting September 15, while the device will be readily available for purchase on September 21.

Industry sources predict the pre-order numbers of the Galaxy Note 8 to be similar to that of its predecessor, which managed to sell 200,000 units on the first two days. The Galaxy Note 7 pre-order sales numbers reached 400,000 units in thirteen days, while the Galaxy S8 pre-order sales reached 1 million in the first 16 days.

The Galaxy Note 8 features a larger, 6.3-inch Infinity Display, dual-12MP cameras with OIS, an improved S Pen, and more software features. Even though the Galaxy Note 8 has improved in almost every regard over its predecessor, its sales performance is harder to predict due to its higher-than-expected price tag.

No, the Galaxy Note 8’s face recognition can’t be fooled by a photo

Last week, a video started making the rounds online claiming that the Galaxy Note 8’s face recognition feature can be fooled by a photograph—and guess what? It can’t. Seriously. We tried it for ourselves and were unable to generate the same result.

Here’s why it worked in the clip: When a smartphone is on display in a brick-and-mortar store it’s running something called Demo Mode, which makes it easy to trial all the different features on board a handset without having to configure them.

The main reason retailers use the software is to prevent people from maliciously—or accidentally—locking a demo unit to their face, which renders it useless for all other potential customers wanting to play around with it that day.

We replicated all of the steps outlined in the video and even tried using a flat photograph, but to no avail. Each time, our Galaxy Note 8 displayed an alert saying that it was unable to detect a face, instructing us to try again.

While we can’t offer up an explanation as to why some news outlets were able to trick their handset with an image, we can honestly say that we weren’t. We’ve reached out to Samsung for an explanation and will update this post if/when we hear back.

Samsung launches a bug bounty program for its smartphone software

Samsung has today launched its Mobile Security Rewards Program, an initiative designed to compensate users for reporting weaknesses in its firmware—and much to our surprise, it isn’t only available for owners of its latest smartphones; some of the devices on the list date back to 2015.

In order to be eligible for a cash prize, you’ll need to identify an exploit in the latest version of the company’s firmware that can be used to compromise the security of a handset without the need for a physical connection—a USB cable, for example—or third-party computer software.

Related: Samsung details contents of September security patch

As outlined in the conditions printed on the firm’s Mobile Security blog, the amount of compensation you’ll receive will depend on the level of security risk assigned to your report by its experts; if happen you uncover a severe exploit, though it’s unlikely, your payout could be as much as $200,000.

The only caveat? You can’t discuss the vulnerability in public until Samsung gives you the green light, and that could take anywhere from two-days to two-months; however, that’s a standard requirement of most bounty programs offered by leading manufacturers, including Apple and Microsoft.

Samsung details contents of September security patch

Samsung has taken to its recently-revamped Security Blog to detail the contents of this month’s Security Maintenance Release (SMR). The upgrade, which could start making the rounds as soon as next week, addresses a total of 46 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) in the Android operating system and 12 in the South Korean company’s firmware.

As we’ve said time and time again, the majority of patches included in the update are listed as “privately disclosed” in an attempt to stop hackers from exploiting them before the firmware is rolled out to all eligible smartphones, including the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S6, Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge and Galaxy A5 (2017/2016).

Firmware Magazine: September 4, 2017

Be sure to keep your browser pointed to SamMobile as we’ll let you know as soon as the SMR starts making the rounds for your handset. In the meantime, feel free to check out our extensive list of the Galaxy-branded smartphones that are set to receive the much-anticipated Android 8.0 Oreo update. There are a few devices on there that might surprise you.

Yes Bank credit cards can now be used with Samsung Pay in India

Samsung has expanded the list of cards that will work with its mobile payment solution in India. Samsung Pay now supports MasterCard credit cards issued by Yes Bank. Visa credit cards and any debit card issued by Yes Bank are not supported yet. Yes Bank customers can also receive a cashback of up to INR 1,500 if they complete ten transactions using Samsung Pay.

Samsung launched Samsung Pay in India earlier this year, supporting credit and debit cards from major banks in the country. The company also started offering cashback and discounts for consumers who transacted using its mobile payment solution. Samsung also launched a cut-down version of Samsung Pay in India that works with lower-priced Galaxy smartphones such as the Galaxy J7 Max and the Galaxy On Max.

Samsung Pay supports cards from American Express, Axis Bank, Citibank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI, and Standard Chartered Bank as well. It also supports mobile wallets such as Paytm and MobiKwik. Earlier, debit cards from SBI weren’t supported, but the compatibility was added at a later stage. Hope that the same happens with debit cards from Yes Bank.
