August 2021 security update reaches the Galaxy A10

The August 2021 security update has just started hitting select Galaxy A10 models. This development comes not long after the entry-level smartphone received its long-awaited One UI 3.1 upgrade. True enough, this comparably minor firmware appears to only be targeting Galaxy A10 units that are already running Android 11.

We’re making that distinction because according to our data, the Galaxy A10 One UI 3.1 rollout is still ongoing. The largest market that it has yet to reach is Argentina, with a population of 45 million. Granted, there’s no telling how many of its nationals happen to own the Galaxy A10.

The Galaxy A10 still has some fight left in it

Anyway, the latest software revision for the 2019 device is labeled as the release A105FPUU6CUH3. And it has just been sighted in Russia a couple of hours ago. No other countries are yet part of this rollout, so it might be a while until the patch reaches your device.

Still, the vast majority of active Galaxy A10 units out there should be receiving this particular firmware in the coming weeks. And those that don’t will be getting the September 1st patch level instead. Namely, while the Galaxy A10 is on a quarterly release schedule, the exact roadmaps vary by country. Much like its original release dates did.

But Samsung has definitely been doing a good job of ensuring the 2019 device ends up punching way above its weight on the security front. And it’s going to keep doing that for a while yet – another six months, at the very least.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 who? We already have a Galaxy Z Fold 4 wishlist

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 brings a lot of improvements over the Galaxy Z Fold 2, including a stronger and sleeker build, an IPX8 rating for water resistance, a faster processor, and an under-panel selfie camera. The smartphone even brings S Pen compatibility to fill the void left by the Galaxy Note series. However, we think that Samsung could make its flagship foldable smartphone even better with a few changes, so here’s our wishlist for the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

A telephoto camera with at least 3x optical zoom

Samsung, a 2x telephoto camera isn’t going to cut it on a smartphone that costs $1,800 in 2021, even if it has a foldable screen. Telephoto cameras are great for quickly snapping up pictures and videos of interesting or useful things around you, such as pets, children, or signboards. It doesn’t have to be a 5x or 10x periscope camera like the ones used in the Galaxy S20 Ultra and the Galaxy S21 Ultra. However, we think that Samsung’s next Galaxy Z Fold phone should definitely have a telephoto camera with at least 3x optical zoom.

A better under-panel selfie camera

Galaxy Z Fold 3 under display camera

One of the main talking points of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is its 4MP under-panel selfie camera. We’ve already shown you the quality difference between the phone’s regular 10MP selfie camera and the 4MP under-panel camera. Yes, there’s definitely room for improvement in terms of image quality.

Samsung also needs to improve how the display area covering the under-panel camera appears. The under-display camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 can be easily spotted. In comparison, it is hard to spot the under-display camera on the ZTE Axon 30 5G and the Xiaomi Mi MIX 4. With the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung should improve the image quality as well as the appearance of the under-panel camera.

A wider cover display (and, in turn, a dedicated S Pen silo?)

Compared to the original Galaxy Fold, Samsung has immensely improved the cover display on its flagship foldable phones. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 has a bigger cover display with slimmer bezels and a 120Hz refresh rate. However, we still feel that it needs to be a bit wider for easier for typing and performing day-to-day tasks. If the cover display gets wider, maybe Samsung will find enough room inside the Galaxy Z Fold 4 for a dedicated S Pen silo, something that many consumers have been demanding.

An S Pen-compatible cover display

Samsung has added S Pen compatibility to the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Fold 3. However, only the inner display of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is compatible with the S Pen. Adding S Pen compatibility to the cover display would make the phone more useful, especially when you have to jot down things quickly.

Imagine a situation where your Galaxy Z Fold device is in your pocket, and you have to note down someone’s contact number. With the Galaxy Z Fold 3, you have to take out the phone from your pocket, unfold it, remove the S Pen from its holster, and then write on the inner display. If the cover display is S Pen-compatible, it will reduce one step from the whole process and accessing the Screen Off Memo feature would be easier.

Less visible screen crease

A visible screen crease could put off some customers who are interested in buying a foldable phone. We had expected the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to have a less pronounced screen crease when compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 2. However, there hasn’t been any improvement on that front. We expect Samsung to work on decreasing the screen crease with its next Galaxy Z Fold smartphone so that it looks and feels more like a normal smartphone.

If Samsung can bring these improvements with the Galaxy Z Fold 4, it will be a huge improvement over the Galaxy Z Fold 3. It could attract even more consumers and expand the foldable market.

What improvements do you want to see on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 whenever it arrives? Let us know down in the comments!

Samsung eyeing up New York as potential location for its $17 billion plant

Samsung is eyeing the state of New York for a brand new fabrication plant, according to a new report by Times Union. Initially, Samsung had zeroed in on Arizona for its new 5nm plant, but it appears that New York is a contender, too.

Company executives are examining the benefits both states have to offer and is also looking at Genesee County as a potential site. There is, however, a possibility that it will ditch the United States altogether and set shop back in South Korea.

Tax breaks will decide which state gets billions from Samsung

Estimates say that the New York plant could cost Samsung up to $17 billion to set up. It isn’t immediately clear as to which products will be manufactured at the new plant, but we’re probably looking at 5nm chipsets. Samsung could also use it to bolster its 8nm wafer production, given its sky-high demand from Nvidia for its high-end GeForce RTX 3000 series of graphics cards.

The US federal government is expected to offer up to $2 Billion in tax breaks to Samsung for setting up a plant within its borders. The company would also prefer substantial tax breaks from local government entities to fund the required infrastructure improvements.

Samsung will create 1,800 new jobs in the region, which could be located at Western New York Science & Technology Advanced Manufacturing Park. Also known as WNYSTAMP, the facility spans over 1,250 acres and is host to several tech companies such as IBM and GlobalFoundries. The report adds that there is a possibility that Samsung’s facility could be located elsewhere.

Samsung has an ambitious plan to create 50,000 retail jobs in India

Samsung India has launched a new initiative that will create a host of jobs in the Indian market. It is called DOST, which expands to (Digital and Offline Service Training) and also happens to be the Hindi word for friend. It comes in the face of rising unemployment in the country due to lockdown-related restrictions.

Samsung claims that DOST will create up to 50,000 new jobs over the course of a year. Just about anyone who has completed HSC (the equivalent of high school in India) can be a part of Samsung’s DOST program.

Samsung aiming for large-scale job creation in India

There is no word about the exact eligibility criteria just yet, but we should find out more in the coming weeks. It seems that many people have already enrolled themselves in the program across India.

The classes will include over 200 hours of online classes and OJT (on-the-job training), which will prepare employees for the real world. The company has partnered up with the National Skill Development Centre (NDSC) and will use its infrastructure of over 120 centres nationwide to conduct the hands-on part of the training.

They cover all the basic skills one would require for a life in retail stores, such as customer engagement, managing sales counter, handling customer queries, product demonstration and more.

The DOST initiative should help bolster Samsung India’s offline retail store presence by allowing Samsung to open more stores. Brick and mortar retailers still account for a significant number of sales in the Indian market, despite widespread availability on 4G-enabled smartphones and e-commerce platforms.

Samsung Pay will soon be able to store your COVID-19 vaccination records

Samsung will soon allow customers to store their COVID-19 vaccination record in digital format on their Galaxy smartphone, as long as they have access to Samsung Pay. The company has partnered with non-profit health care data organization The Commons Project to bring vaccination records to Samsung Pay customers.

The process is simple and involves the CommonHealth app available at the Google Play Store. Galaxy smartphone owners with access to Samsung Pay will soon be able to use the CommonHealth app to authenticate their COVID-19 vaccination records, after which they can add these details to Samsung Pay.

When traveling, customers will have the option of displaying their vaccination records on a Galaxy device through a QR code generated by Samsung Pay.

How soon will COVID-19 vaccination records come to Galaxy devices?

Samsung is reportedly rolling out this new Pay feature to a small number of devices for a short pilot run. However, the company plans to bring vaccination records to every Samsung Pay customer before the end of the week.

Unfortunately, Samsung Pay is available in a fairly limited number of markets — a little over two dozen countries, to be precise — so the handy vaccination records in digital format won’t be available for everyone, everywhere.

Samsung’s new phones can transfer files to phones from other brands!

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 appear to be Samsung’s first smartphones to embrace the Mutual Transmission Alliance (MTA) standard for file sharing with other brands of smartphones, although as yet, it’s unclear if the MTA protocols are integrated with Quick Share.

Samsung’s apparent decision to join forces with the MTA means that Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 owners should be able to transfer files to and from other smartphone brands with more ease. The list of MTA partners includes Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, OnePlus, ASUS, Black Shark, Hisense, Meizu, and ZTE.

Even better, if Samsung did join the MTA with the launch of the Galaxy Z3 series, it will enable easier file sharing with other types of devices besides smartphones, such as laptops.

The MTA file-sharing system supports documents, images, videos, and audio files. It relies on Bluetooth LE to scan for nearby devices, and sharing is done via Wi-Fi Direct. Transfer rates can top 20Mbps.

Assuming that Samsung is now an MTA member, the company might plan on revealing more details as we approach August 27 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 start shipping to customers. If it’s real, we’ll try testing the feature for our upcoming reviews, so stick around.

Today only, you can pre-order the new Galaxy Buds 2 for 17% off

Samsung’s latest wireless earbuds, the Galaxy Buds 2, are available for pre-order before shipping out to customers beginning August 27, but would you believe that someone’s already offering the new earbuds at a discount? It’s true! Woot!, the Amazon daily deals company is presently offering the Galaxy Buds 2 at a 17% discount, though the clock is ticking fast.

Samsung announced a $149 launch price for the Galaxy Buds 2, but Woot! customers can pre-order the new earbuds for $124. Customers can choose from all four color options and have the possibility of buying up to three pairs. The website shows an estimated delivery date of August 25-27.

You snooze, you lose

Woot! offers daily deals — literally — which means there are fewer than 24 hours left on this Galaxy Buds 2 pre-order discount. As of this writing, there are 17 hours left on the clock before the deal expires, so if you were planning on buying the new earbuds, make sure you check the retailer’s website — linked below — before it’s too late.

The Galaxy Buds 2 has two drivers per earbud — an 11mm woofer and a 6.3mm tweeter — and a total of six microphones. Samsung has included ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) technology, and the earbuds promise up to 5 hours of music playback with ANC enabled or up to 7.5 hours without ANC on a single charge. The charging case can extend playback time at up to 28 hours.

Samsung confirms it’s getting rid of the ads in its apps this year

It took a lot of people by surprise when ads started appearing in some of Samsung’s stock apps like Music, Themes, Samsung Pay and Weather. Even those who bought its most expensive smartphones were not spared. Imagine spending over $1,200 on a Galaxy S21 Ultra and still seeing ads.

Naturally, users were not happy. They have been very vocal about this and have called on Samsung to remove the ads. Following comments made by the company’s mobile boss hinting that this might happen, Samsung has now confirmed that it will be removing ads from its apps this year.

No more ads in Samsung’s stock apps

TM Roh, head of Samsung’s mobile division, said during the company’s online town hall meeting this week that ads will be removed from Samsung’s stock apps. He said this in response to a question from an employee who inquired why the company’s stock apps were showing ads. Roh said that future builds of these apps will no longer show ads.

The company has now issued an official statement on the subject to The Verge. “Samsung has made a decision to cease the advertisement on proprietary apps including Samsung Weather, Samsung Pay, and Samsung Theme,” it said, adding that this update will be ready by “later this year.”

Samsung also stated that “We value feedback from our users and continue our commitment to provide them with the best possible experience from our Galaxy products and services.”

The decision to remove ads from apps goes to show that Samsung indeed listens to its customers. They were not happy when the ads started appearing. It took the company some time to make this decision, but all is well that ends well.

Samsung hasn’t given a firm date for when this update is going to be delivered. Chances are that the next One UI update, which won’t be One UI 3.1.1, will bring it.

Galaxy Note 9 picks up what’s likely its final monthly security update

The August 2021 security update has started landing on the international variants of the Galaxy Note 9. Just ahead of the third anniversary of the smartphone’s release, at that. Anyone still using this particular model should now be on the lookout for the firmware upgrade designated as the release N960FXXS9FUH1.

Samsung Germany is spearheading this rollout in Europe, as it often does. But the stateside branch of the tech giant actually beat it to the punch this time around; the unlocked Galaxy Note 9 units in the U.S. are already receiving the August 2021 update stateside as of yesterday.

It’s still not over for the Galaxy Note 9

Looking at the wider picture, the Galaxy Note 9 is currently one of the oldest Samsung devices still receiving monthly security patches. Granted, it’s just about to turn three next week. Meaning that the August 1st, 2021 patch level might very well be the final monthly firmware release for the device. Or the penultimate one, at best.

On the bright side, none of that is to say that it’s over for the Galaxy Note 9. If you’re still rocking the 2018 flagship, you still have a full year’s worth of quarterly security updates to look forward to. The Galaxy Note 8, on the other hand… yeah, that one is definitely at the end of its lifespan.

But with each passing generation, the Galaxy Note series continues to deliver excellent value for money. Even in a year with no new generation to speak of. Let’s just hope Samsung gets back to updating its iconic line next year.

Samsung doesn’t want to give you the One UI 3.1.1 update

Samsung’s flagship smartphone launches are always accompanied by a new iteration of One UI. It was previously expected that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 will be launched with One UI 3.5. It later came to be known that the new foldables will launch with One UI 3.1.1, not the version previously expected.

Once the flagships bring a new iteration of One UI, it is eventually released to existing Samsung devices. That may not happen this time around. Samsung is apparently not going to release One UI 3.1.1 for existing devices.

No One UI 3.1.1, but you’ll get all of the improvements

A member of Samsung’s mobile team has confirmed on the company’s official forums, after checking with the relevant department, that One UI 3.1.1 will not be released for other devices. The One UI 3.1.1 iteration is only meant for Samsung’s latest foldables.

However, the company will bring some of the app improvements and other enhancements to current flagship devices through a software update. This update won’t change the version number. So it’s still going to be One UI 3.1 but with everything One UI 3.1.1 has to offer.

It was further pointed out that this update will first be released for the Galaxy S20 series starting the week of August 17. The Galaxy S21 series will be next from August 25 with Galaxy Note 20 and other models being updated sequentially thereafter.

It doesn’t really matter if the version number isn’t changed as long as the new improvements are brought to existing devices. One UI 3.1.1 has only made minor changes anyway. Users should be looking forward to the next major update instead.

Samsung is expected to open the Android 12 One UI 4.0 beta in the coming weeks. This will enable them to get a taste of the next big One UI update before it’s released to the public.

Galaxy Fold gets the August 2021 security update in the US

Samsung had released the August 2021 security update to the original Galaxy Fold two weeks ago. However, that update was limited to the international version of the phone. Now, the company has started rolling out the latest security patch to the US variant of the Galaxy Fold.

The South Korean firm has released a new software update to the Galaxy Fold with firmware version F900U1UES5EUG1. The update is now available on various carrier networks in the US: Bluegrass Cellular, C-Spire, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Xfinity Mobile. According to Samsung, this new software brings the August 2021 security patch that fixes 40 vulnerabilities.

If you are still using a Galaxy Fold in the US on any of the networks mentioned above, you can update your foldable smartphone with the newest software. You can either wait for the OTA update to arrive or check for it manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also download the latest firmware file from our firmware database and flash it manually.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy Fold in September 2019 with Android 9 Pie. Last year, the smartphone received the Android 10-based One UI 2 update. The Android 11-based One UI 3 update was released to the Galaxy Fold earlier this year.

Watch: Galaxy Z Fold 3 gets disassembled on a video

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 was unveiled last week alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Watch 4 series, and the Galaxy Buds 2. While the new flagship foldable smartphone is yet to reach store shelves, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has already gone through disassembly, and you can watch the entire process in the new video.

The folks over at PBK Reviews have disassembled the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to check what the phone is made up of and how well its components have been put together. While the video shows the entire process of safely disassembling and reassembling Samsung’s latest flagship foldable phone, we wouldn’t advise anyone to do this on their own as it is an expensive phone that costs at least $1,800.

The 11-minute video starts off by removing the phone’s nano-SIM card tray. To remove the Gorilla Glass Victus back of the phone, one needs to apply some heat so that the adhesive can be loosened and the back can then be removed using a pry tool. The back has a flex cable for the secondary microphone. The same process can be used to disassemble the cover display. However, you need to carefully remove the display cable that is attached to the PCB and protected under a plastic bracket.

To reveal the PCB that’s placed below the cover display, you need to remove 14 Philips screws and then remove the top covers. One of those top covers includes the speaker. The SIM card reader can be disconnected and removed as well. After removing four more flex cables and a coaxial, the PCB can be removed. This PCB houses a 10MP selfie camera and a proximity sensor. This part of the phone also houses the second speaker.

Similar to all foldable phones from Samsung, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has two batteries, one placed in each half of the phone. This new phone has two batteries (2,280mAh and 2,120mAh), totaling a battery capacity of 4,400mAh (typical). You need to use isopropyl alcohol before prying open the batteries. Both batteries are covered by graphite pads and most of the device openings are protected by rubber gaskets.

The other side of the phone has 21 Philips screws to open before you can remove the second battery. Moreover, the battery is covered by the Qi wireless charging coil. After removing some flex cables, covers, NFC sensor, and mmWave 5G antenna, the main PCB and the sub-PCB can be removed as well. The video also shows the phone’s under-panel 4MP selfie camera.

The main PCB has a multi-layer design, and it houses the three rear cameras, the Snapdragon 888 processor, 12GB RAM, and 256GB/512GB storage. The chipset and memory are covered by thermal paste and graphite layer for efficient heat management. The sub-board has the USB Type-C port, a water damage indicator sticker, and a rubber gasket. The video also shows the placements of the linear haptic feedback motor, side-mounted fingerprint reader, and a way to replace the foldable screen.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 got a repairability score of 2/10 in the video since there is a lot of adhesive and glue involved, and only experienced people can disassemble it for repairs.
