Samsung’s Montreal AI center is its second research facility in Canada

It was reported earlier this week that Samsung could announce the opening of its Montreal AI center soon. That’s exactly what the company has done today. Samsung has announced that this new artificial intelligence center is its second in Canada and fourth in North America alone. It has similar centers up and running in six other locations across the globe.

This is also the fourth Samsung AI Center in North America. Others are present in New York, Silicon Valley and Toronto. Samsung says that this new location will allow for greater industry collaboration and talent recruitment in this major Canadian AI hub.

New Montreal AI center is Canada’s second

The availability of key talent was a major contributing factor for this location. Leading AI researchers at McGill University and the University of Montreal have longstanding relationships wth the company. Greater Montreal has also become a hub for AI research as it houses 250 researchers and almost 9,000 university students in related programs.

Samsung presented its vision for artificial intelligence at the center’s opening event. It aims to develop a highly personalized multi-device AI platform which allows people multiple touchpoints to interact with AI not only through voice but through vision and touch as well.

This is yet another step that the company has taken to achieve its goal of hiring 1,000 AI specialists by 2020. That’s also when it expects all of its products to be AI enabled. The company will certainly open more AI centers in locations across the globe to achieve this goal.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 launched in India for ₹57,900

Samsung has launched its newest flagship Android tablet, the Galaxy Tab S4, in India today. As expected, the Galaxy Tab S4 price in India is considerably higher than the launch price of the Galaxy Tab S3. At ₹57,900, it’s quite close to what a MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage costs in the country, and Samsung is likely to find it hard to move many units from retail shelves.

Galaxy Tab S4 price in India as much as a new Galaxy S9+

Of course, for those who do want a premium tablet and don’t have an issue paying for it, the Galaxy Tab S4 can be an excellent purchase thanks to its beautiful AMOLED display alone. The Galaxy Tab S4 also comes with the S Pen stylus, which also adds to its value. The specs remain the same as the model launched elsewhere. It has a 10.5-inch WQXGA (2560×1600) Super AMOLED display, Snapdragon 835 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel rear and front cameras, a 7,300 mAh battery, four AKG-tuned speakers with Dolby Atmos support, and an iris scanner (no fingerprint sensor). It runs Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box.

The Galaxy Tab S4 will go on sale from today itself through Samsung’s online store and through offline channels, with an Amazon release set for October 20. Color options include black and grey. Samsung has a few launch offers to make the price tag more palatable. Well, two, to be exact. There’s a ₹5,000 cashback for users of HDFC credit and debit cards and ₹a 2,750 cashback as recharge vouchers for Jio 4G subscribers who recharge with the ₹198 or ₹299 data plan.

Samsung officially confirms Galaxy Book 2 specs, price and release date

Samsung today announced the Galaxy Book 2. It’s the successor to Samsung’s existing 2-in-1 Windows-powered detachable. There were reports recently that the company would be unveiling this product soon and it has done just that today through a press release. The Galaxy Book 2 specs and price have also been confirmed today.

The company describes the Galaxy Book 2 as an always on, always connected PC with gigabit LTE connectivity. A multi-workday battery is promised as well. Samsung is also shipping the device with a keyboard and S Pen in the box.

Galaxy Book 2 specs, price and release date

The Galaxy Book 2 specs include a 12-inch 2160×1440 pixel resolution OLED display. It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 processor with 4GB of RAM and 128GB storage. There’s a Snapdragon X20 modem for gigabit LTE.

The device also features an 8-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera. The two speakers are AKG-tuned and there’s support for Dolby Atmos. Connectivity options include two USB Type-C ports, a microSD card slot and the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Samsung promises up to 20 hours of battery life on the device which makes its multi-workday claim technically correct. It supports Adaptive Fast Charging so users will be able to quickly recharge whenever they get the chance. Windows 10 with S Mode will be shipped with this device. Customers will have the option to upgrade to the full Windows experience if they so desire for free. It’s pertinent to mention here though that Samsung’s 20-hour battery life claim is based on the device being used with S Mode.

There’s a pretty significant design change being introduced with this model. It has a kickstand at the back much like Microsoft’s Surface tablets. This means that users no longer need a case to prop up the device. On the other hand, the keyboard that ships in the box will double as a screen cover.

Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy Book 2 will be available for purchase starting November 2 for $999.99 from Samsung.com and Microsoft.com. AT&T, Sprint and Verizon will be selling the device as well through their retail stores later this month. Pricing and availability details for other markets will be announced in due course.

Samsung patent possibly shows optical fingerprint sensor for the Galaxy S10

A patent application from Samsung shows us how an optical fingerprint scanner might be placed under the Galaxy S10 display. Though this is not the first time we see a similar patent, it is the most advanced implementation so far.

Patent: Optical fingerprint sensor under the display

Rumors about Samsung flagship phones having an FOD (Fingerprint-On-Display) scanner go back years. When the Galaxy S9 did not have one, it was believed the Note 9 might. When that device did not have one, rumors pointed to new mid-range devices and ultimately to the Galaxy S10. But while Samsung could well opt to use a sensor by a different manufacturer, its own R&D department does not sit still.

samsung patent optical fingerprint reader galaxy s10 2

Today, the WIPO published a patent application titled ELECTRONIC DEVICE COMPRISING BIOMETRIC SENSOR. It was filed there earlier this year, but the original Korean patent application dates back to April 2017. What we see is an optical sensor embedded under the display of a recent looking Galaxy device, unlike similar patents that showed far more abstract implementations. The general area of the sensor is pressure-sensitive, just like the virtual home key on Galaxy S and Note models.

Mind you, the date of the original filing excludes the possibility of drawing conclusions about the upcoming Galaxy S10 design, even if that bottom bezel looks rather tiny. Nevertheless, this could well end up being the way Samsung implements its own in-display fingerprint reader in upcoming phones, no matter how they look.

October 2018 security patch update released for the Galaxy Note 9

Samsung released two Galaxy Note 9 software updates in a short span of time recently, and another one is now making the rounds. The latest update brings with it the security patch for the month of October. That’s it. No camera improvements are part of the package this time, which is why the update is only around 70 MB in size.

Galaxy Note 9 October security update rolling out

The October 2018 security patch brings fixes a dozen critical Android OS vulnerabilities and 11 vulnerabilities that affect Samsung’s software. The Galaxy Note 9 October security update comes with software version N960FXXS2ARJ4. It’s rolling out in countries like Bulgaria, Romania, and Slovakia at the moment and should come to more countries in the coming days. Samsung has also released the October patch for the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 8 in recent days.

If you have a Galaxy Note 9, you can try downloading the update from the Settings » Software update menu on the phone. It will take time to reach everyone even if it has been released in your country, so make sure you check again a little later if it doesn’t start downloading right away. We’ll update this post once the firmware for the new update shows up in our database.

Has the October update arrived on your Galaxy Note 9?

Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 certified with Android 8.0 Oreo

The Galaxy Tab Active 2 was released as an affordable rugged tablet last year in select markets. It ran Nougat out of the box, and a subsequent launch in the US a few months later didn’t bring Oreo with it. But the Oreo update now looks to be around the corner, as revealed by fresh certifications received by the tablet at the Wi-Fi Alliance.

Galaxy Tab Active 2 Oreo release not far off

The Galaxy Tab Active 2 has been certified with Android 8.0 Oreo earlier this week. Both the Wi-Fi (SM-T390) and LTE (SM-T395) models have been certified, in addition to some country-specific variants. As usual, a Wi-Fi certification does not mean the official update will come out right away, but it’s generally a good sign that the update won’t be too far off. Samsung has released Oreo for most of its popular mid-range and budget phones in recent weeks, so the company can now focus on the Tab Active 2 and other not-so-widely available devices.

As for Android Pie, Samsung will soon kick off a beta program for the Galaxy S9. Pie is unlikely to arrive as an official update this year, although Samsung France did suggest a January release.

Gear S3 battery drain issue returns to plague owners

Samsung may finally have given us a flagship phone that can last all day long on a single charge, but it looks like owners of the company’s smartwatches aren’t having the same experience. The Gear S3, in particular, has had battery drain issues for quite some time. Samsung seemed to have fixed the battery drain with the last Gear S3 update, but it seems the problem has returned for no rhyme and reason.

Gear S3 battery drain makes a comeback

Many Gear S3 owners have taken to Samsung’s community forums to complain about the battery drain. It looks like it started a week or two ago for most users, so it’s possible an app update may have caused it. One of Samsung’s moderators has revealed that the company is working on a fix but has no idea what is causing the Gear S3 to eat through battery charge so rapidly. If it is an app – perhaps Samsung Health, as suggested by one of our readers – that is causing issues, a solution may arrive sooner rather than later, although nothing can be said for certain at this point.

Always On Display to get colored notification icons with Android Pie

Android Pie will bring notable user interface changes, as leaked firmware for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 have revealed. A new dark theme is the main addition, and it will likely be part of the reason why Project Treble won’t be too useful for Samsung. As with all major upgrades, some existing features will also be updated, and Always On Display looks set to be one of them.

Android Pie to bring noticeable Always On Display updates

This revelation comes from an Android Pie hands-on video from the Galaxy Note 9, which you can check out below. Always On Display seems to be getting support for colored notification icons, with the app icons no longer sitting inside a circle. That should liven things up compared to the all white icons you have on AOD on Samsung devices right now. Another change is how the AOD time and icons aren’t in the center anymore. Last but not the least, Samsung seems to have updated the font with a Microsoft-ish look, something Windows users are likely to notice.

AOD is bound to get new clock styles as well with Android Pie, but it remains to be seen if everything we see in the early Pie builds will be available on the final update. Samsung is expected to launch an Android Pie beta program in the near future, and a lot may change in the months of testing that Samsung will carry out via the beta builds.

Galaxy Note 8 also updated with October 2018 security patch

Another Samsung flagship is now being updated with the latest security patch. Samsung is rolling out a new update for the Galaxy Note 8 in some European countries including Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. The update comes with build number N950FXXS5CRJ1 and only brings the October 2018 security patch according to the changelog.

Galaxy Note 8 update released with October patch

Samsung did bring more than just the latest security fixes to the Galaxy Note 8 with the last update. The Note 8 received the ability to record Super Slow-motion videos and create AR Emojis, features that debuted on this year’s flagships. AR Emoji is being offered on a couple of mid-range Galaxy devices as well, although no devices other than the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 can create AR Emojis in real-time, possibly due to a lack of enough processing power under the hood.

The Galaxy Note 8 update can be downloaded from the Software update menu in the phone’s Settings app. If it’s not available on your phone over the air, you can download the firmware for your country from our database and manually install the latest update.
