Galaxy J7 (2017) GFXBench listing reveals 13 MP front camera, Full HD display, and more

It’s been slightly more than a year since the 2016 editions of the Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 were announced. We already know the J5 (2017) and J7 (2017) are coming at some point, and we are now getting a complete list of specifications for the new J7 thanks to GFXBench. It looks like Samsung is taking the selfie business seriously – the company’s latest mid-range devices feature 16-megapixel cameras at the front, and it looks like the J7 will see a bump to a 13-megapixel selfie camera.

The J7 (2017) will also get a Full HD display (5.5 inches in size), something that had been reserved for Chinese variants of the phone until last year. RAM is getting a boost from 2GB to 3GB as well, although storage looks stuck at 16GB. The SoC is the 14 nm octa-core Exynos 7870, which also powered the J7 (2016) and sits slightly below the Exynos 7880 chip that powers the new Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7. On the software front, there’s Android 7.0 Nougat; that is to be expected, although it remains to be seen if Samsung’s upcoming phones will feature the same user interface as the Galaxy S8.

The Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 (2017) are expected to feature metal bodies and a fingerprint sensor, both of which were seen on the Galaxy J7 Prime. There is no word on a release date or pricing, but with the J7 (2017) getting its specs listed and the J5 (2017) going through the FCC, we shouldn’t have to wait long for the official announcement. The 2016 editions were impressive budget phones from Samsung, and it will be interesting to see how this year’s iterations fare.

Samsung Chromebook Pro delayed, Android apps for Chrome could be the cause

Samsung showcased the Chromebook Plus and the Chromebook Pro at CES earlier this year. The Chromebook Pro, which was designed in partnership with Google to run Android apps, has a 360-degree rotating touchscreen display and a digitized pen. It was supposed to be launched sometime in April, but it looks like the launch has been delayed.

The Verge is reporting that the reason behind the delay in Chromebook Pro’s launch could be Android apps on Chrome OS. The laptop was “Designed for Google Play,” but Android apps still run a bit janky on Google’s Chrome OS. The internet search giant might be taking some extra time to make sure that Android apps run smoother on Samsung’s upcoming laptop.

A Samsung spokesperson emailed to The Verge to say that the “Chromebook Pro will be available later this spring. Chromebook Plus is available for purchase online and in-store now.” The last day of Spring this year is June 19th, so we expect Samsung to launch the Chromebook Pro sometime in May or June. The laptop’s official price hasn’t been revealed yet.

Samsung rolls out April security patch for Galaxy S7 and S7 edge in India in May

Samsung has started rolling out the April 2017 security patch for the Galaxy S7 (SM-G930FD) and the Galaxy S7 edge (SM-G935FD) in India. However, it’s May, and the company is one month late in rolling out the update to its last year’s flagship smartphones.

The updates have file sizes of 169.79MB and 176.49MB for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge, respectively. Apart from the security patch, the update might also bring improved device stability, bug fixes, and performance improvements to the smartphones.

Samsung had rolled out the Nougat update to these smartphones earlier this year in India. If you’re a Galaxy S7 or S7 edge owner from India, you should check for this software update from the settings menu on your smartphone.

Samsung presents the Galaxy S8 as your perfect travel companion

After having released the Galaxy S8, Samsung has now got down to the business of selling its new flagship smartphone. The initial hype surrounding the new device has subsided so we’re seeing the company up its marketing game to get more people to purchase the Galaxy S8.

Samsung has posted a new Galaxy S8 ad on YouTube which showcases how the device can double as your perfect travel companion. The ad highlights some of the great new features that the Galaxy S8 offers, including but not limited to Bixby.

It even points out that the Galaxy S8 has a great camera and that you won’t need to carry a separate one with you if you like taking pictures on the go. Granted, you would need an internet connection to get the most out of your Galaxy S8 in a foreign land.

Samsung has also posted another ad for the Galaxy S8 that highlights its virtual reality gaming capabilities. To enjoy those features you would require a Gear VR headset. Galaxy S8 pre-order customers have received a free Gear VR with Controller in several markets while some carriers are also offering the headset for free to customers who pick up the Galaxy S8 even today.

Refurbished Galaxy Note 7 variants pass through FCC

After Samsung recalled the Galaxy Note 7 due to faulty batteries, it had officially announced that it would release a refurbished variant of the Galaxy Note 7 in some markets, depending on regulatory approvals and local demands. Some new variants of the phablet have now passed through FCC’s certification process, bringing the official launch closer than ever.

Three variants of the refurbished Galaxy Note 7 – SM-N935K, SM-N935L, and SM-N935S – have received FCC certification to be launched in the Korean market. The SM-N935S is believed to be the SK Telecom variant of the refurbished Galaxy Note 7. The SM-N935K and the SM-N935L could be launched on KT and LG Uplus (LG U +) networks, respectively.

This new variant of the Galaxy Note 7 is believed to come with a smaller 3,200 mAh battery and Android 7.0. Moreover, it might come with a completely new name and price. Purported images of the refurbished Galaxy Note 7 (SM-N935) were leaked last month, and the device is expected to go on sale by the end of June 2017.

Galaxy S7 is reportedly the most popular Samsung smartphone in the world

To say that the Galaxy S7 was a hit would be an understatement. It singlehandedly supported Samsung’s position in the flagship market last year after the Galaxy Note 7 went up in flames. By some accounts, Samsung has sold more than 55 million units of this smartphone. A new report claims that the Galaxy S7 is now the most used Samsung smartphone in the world.

Advertising agency ScientiaMobile’s has released its Mobile Overview Report for the first quarter of this year. The report finds that the Galaxy S7 generates the most mobile browsing activity than any other device.

The Galaxy S5 remained the most widely used Samsung device for quite a long time. Even the Galaxy S6 wasn’t able to overtake it but it appears that the Galaxy S7 has been able to do that.

It’s possible that Galaxy S5 owners have a part to play in this as well. Many of them would have upgraded to the Galaxy S7 after their two-year contracts were up. This is one of the reasons why the Galaxy S8 is expected to outperform its predecessor as well given that it’s very worthwhile for Galaxy S6 owners to upgrade to the Galaxy S8 once their contracts are up.

Galaxy S8 Active spotted in a User Agent String

It would appear that Samsung is working on a ruggedized variant of the Galaxy S8 after all. Earlier today, a handset bearing the model number SM-G892A, which we believe to be the AT&T-branded variant of the Galaxy S8 Active, was spotted in a User Agent String.

Sadly, we don’t know a great deal about the Galaxy S8 Active, other than that it’s codenamed Cruiser. MIL-STD-810G standard compliance, in addition to IP68 certification, is pretty much a given, but it’s unclear whether it’ll sport the same internals as the recently-launched Galaxy S8.

For those in need of a refresher, the Galaxy S8 packs a 5.8-inch display, an Exynos 8895/Snapdragon 835 processor, a 12MP rear-facing camera, an 8MP selfie camera and a 3,000mAh battery. The Galaxy S8+, on the other hand, features identical specifications, though it has a larger 6.2-inch panel and a 3,500mAh cell.

Typically, AT&T takes the wraps off its Active handsets in June — so we may have to wait a little while before the Galaxy S8 Active finally hits the shelves.
