Galaxy S10 benchmark hints at 6GB RAM for the base model

We can expect more Galaxy S10 benchmark sightings going forward as we approach the official launch of this device. It’s just over a month away. Samsung will be announcing its new flagship in San Francisco on February 20.

A Galaxy S10 model has now been spotted on the Geekbench website. It’s the model number SM-G973N, the Korean variant of the 6.1-inch Galaxy S10. The 5.8-inch Galaxy S10 Lite surfaced on Geekbench a couple of weeks ago with 6GB of RAM.

This Galaxy S10 benchmark listing suggests that the handset will come with at least 6GB of RAM. It most likely will, at least with the base model. Samsung might offer a configuration with more RAM and storage. The 6GB RAM will be paired with 128GB storage while Samsung may also offer 8GB of RAM with 512GB of storage.

The Korean variant will obviously be powered by Samsung’s Exynos 9820 processor. The Galaxy S10 is going to run Android 9 Pie out of the box and that’s reflected in this listing as well. The device has 4,382 and 9,570 in single-core and multi-core scores, respectively.

The figures are much better than the Galaxy S10 Lite benchmark which surfaced two weeks ago. It was the model number SM-G970U, the US-bound model with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC. Samsung will be using the same chips across all variants so it was rightly chalked up as a case of unoptimized software.

Even these scores should not be taken at face value with regards to the actual performance. Nevertheless, they do highlight what a difference unoptimized software can make. We’ve yet to see any benchmarks for models like the Galaxy S10 X which has 5G. It will likely surface on Geekbench in the coming days.

Ceramic Galaxy S10+ will have a ‘metallic luster,’ higher scratch resistance

We exclusively reported two months ago that Samsung will offer a Galaxy S10 model with a ceramic back. Additional details have now surfaced from China. It’s said that the ceramic back will be present on the Galaxy S10+ with the 12GB RAM and 1TB storage configuration.

As per our information, the SM-G975FC model might be the one that ships with the ceramic back in both black and white colors. It doesn’t seem like the ceramic back will be offered on the 5G variant which is likely called the Galaxy S10 X.

Ceramic Galaxy S10+ will be more scratch and drop resistant

China-based leaker @UniverseIce followed up on our exclusive report about a ceramic back Galaxy S10+. He adds that it will only be available on the variant with 12GB RAM and 1TB of storage. This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about a Galaxy S10 model with 12GB of RAM. The figure was floated in an analyst report. It predicted what could happen with regards to smartphone RAM options in the future. It wasn’t a leak but it was treated as such.

Outrageous RAM figures aside, there’s no denying the possibility that the top-tier configuration of the Galaxy S10+ may come with a ceramic back. The leaker mentions that the material has been created by Samsung using a special process which makes it more scratch and drop resistant. Ceramic is a more durable material. It is placed slightly lower than diamond and sapphire on the internationally recognized Mohs scale of mineral hardness. It’s also said that the material will have a “metallic luster.”

This will be far from the first smartphone with a ceramic back. Companies like Essential and Xiaomi have already beat Samsung to it. Nevertheless, it’s a good option to have on the company’s 10th anniversary Galaxy S flagship. Samsung is going to unveil the Galaxy S10 on February 20 in San Francisco.

Samsung jumps on #10YearChallenge fad to tease its foldable phone

If you are a regular social media user, you probably have come across your friends and family (and perhaps random strangers as well) posting a picture of themselves from ten years ago and a picture of them here in 2019 (and if you’ve done it as well, we promise we won’t judge). The ’10 Year Challenge’ meme has spread like wildfire on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and Samsung Netherlands has taken the chance to jump on the bandwagon to tease its foldable smartphone.

It’s pure coincidence that the Galaxy S flagship line has entered its tenth year right when the #10YearChallenge meme has taken off, but Samsung is clearly more interested in the foldable phone, which the company is hoping will help it turnaround its ailing smartphone business. And a foldable smartphone is the best example of how the Korean giant’s smartphone design will evolve from those flat rectangular slabs with the big bezels from 2009 to a rectangular slab that can switch between a tablet and a phone to offer the best of both worlds.

Sadly, the latest teaser from the company is like all other teasers when it comes to revealing the actual design of the Galaxy Fold (expected to be the retail name for the foldable device), in that it doesn’t really reveal anything. Samsung chose to keep the actual device a secret by slapping a case around it and only offering us a glimpse of the folding display in November last year, although we may finally get to see the complete product at the Galaxy S10 launch on February 20.

Samsung to launch almost 10 Galaxy A phones in the first half of 2019

The Galaxy A lineup is an important one for Samsung, even more so now that the company wants to pack its mid-range devices full of technology. No Samsung flagship has a triple camera yet but the Galaxy A7 got it last year. The Galaxy A9, also launched in 2018, was the world’s first quad-camera smartphone.

Samsung is changing its strategy this year to better compete with its Chinese rivals in the affordable segment of the market. The upcoming Galaxy M series is the opening salvo from Samsung but its efforts don’t end here. We have come to know that Samsung will launch almost 10 Galaxy A smartphones in the first half of 2019.

All of the devices will be released in the first six months of this year

These new devices will be released in the first six months of the year. They feature model numbers SM-A105, SM-A202, SM-A205, SM-A260, SM-A305, SM-A405, SM-A505, SM-A705 and SM-A905. We have also come to know that Samsung won’t be releasing these handsets in all markets. Availability will vary and it’s going to be largely concentrated in Asian markets. Samsung is facing tough competition in markets like India and China which it will seek to counter with these new Galaxy A smartphones.

We’ll be sure to share information about the specs and features of these new Galaxy A phones down the line. You can expect them to stick with the Galaxy A DNA which entails promising specs with a premium look and feel. Samsung will likely make these devices competitive from a price standpoint as well. That will be crucial since the Chinese have been able to beat Samsung on price consistently.

New Samsung tablet SM-T515 with Android 9 Pie spotted on Geekbench

A few weeks back, we exclusively reported that Samsung is working on several new Android tablets. One of the upcoming tablets, bearing the model number SM-T515, has now appeared on the benchmarking website Geekbench.

Samsung may announce the tablet at the Mobile World Congress 2019 in February in Barcelona. It has scored 1283 points as the single-core score and 4017 points as multi-core score in Geekbench.

A bona fide mid-range Samsung tablet

The Geekbench listing reveals that the upcoming tablet will have just 2GB RAM and will be powered by the Exynos 7885 octa-core SoC. It’s the same SoC that powers Samsung’s current crop of mid-range smartphones, including the Galaxy A7 (2018). It’s not yet clear if the company plans to launch another variant of the tablet with more RAM.

On the software front, the SM-T515 will come with Android 9.0 out of the box, and possibly with Samsung’s new “One UI” for tablets. Going by the model number, this appears to be the 4G/LTE version of the tablet since it ends in ‘5’. The model numbers of Wi-Fi variants of Samsung tablets usually end in ‘0’. As reported by us earlier, the tablet will be available in Black and Silver color options at launch. Apart from these details, not much is known about the SM-T515.

Samsung is also working on at least two more variants of the Galaxy Tab A with model number SM-P200 and SM-P205, as well as tablets with model numbers SM-T720 and SM-T725. The marketing names of the latter are not known yet. More details about these upcoming Samsung tablets should surface online come February.

[Poll] Do you still use the Apps Edge feature on your Samsung flagships?

The Galaxy Note Edge was Samsung’s first smartphone with a curved “edge” display. It was announced at the IFA 2014 trade show in Berlin. Simply put, the functionality was amazing. The Galaxy Note Edge felt great in the hand and was easy to use thanks to its curved display. The software features, particularly Apps Edge, were well suited to the device. It allowed users to access the most frequently used apps or functions with a simple swipe.

It turned out to be more of an experimental device for Samsung. It never released a successor to the Galaxy Note Edge. However, it did bring the curved display to the Galaxy S6 edge. The device had a display curved on both sides instead of just one side like the Galaxy Note Edge. This meant that the curve wasn’t as pronounced as it was on the latter. Thus Apps Edge was never as good as it used to be.

The fact remains that the curved display on the Galaxy Note Edge was more functional unlike the curved displays on devices like the Galaxy S6/S7 edge, Galaxy S8+ and the Galaxy S9. Since the curve isn’t as pronounced, the Apps Edge panel now eats into the primary display area and there’s no additional functionality being offered. This isn’t going to get better with the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ either. The curved edges on those displays will be even smaller than they are on the Galaxy S9.

I have been disappointed by the Apps Edge panel on all flagships since the Galaxy Note Edge. It’s sad to see that it took Samsung only a year to kill such a unique and amazing multi-tasking feature.
