You can now pre-order the Gear Sport in the UK

Samsung has started accepting pre-orders for its latest fitness wearable, the Gear Sport, in the United Kingdom. All customers who reserve a unit, which is priced at £299 ($393) in the region, will receive a free pair of the firm’s U Flex earphones.

Announced at a standalone event ahead of IFA back in August, the Gear Sport is a watch-shaped activity tracker that features a 1.2-inch Super AMOLED display, a 1GHz Exynos 3250 dual-core processor, 768MB of RAM and a 300mAh battery.

Just like the Gear Fit2 Pro, the Gear Sport can be submerged in water (5 ATM) for around two-hours, which, as we’ve noted in the past, is more than enough time to swim a considerable amount of lengths. It also packs a built-in GPS chip.

Samsung is also accepting pre-orders for the Gear Sport in the UAE

This news comes less than 24-hours after Samsung teamed up with a number of independent retailers in the United Arab Emirates to begin accepting pre-orders for the Gear Sport in the country, where it carries a price tag of AED 1,199 ($325).

Simband isn’t dead—its technology could be coming to a device near you soon

Samsung unveiled the Simband, a reference wearable that manufacturers could experiment with, back in 2014. The unit was packed full of sensors that tracked blood pressure, skin temperature, sweat production, blood volume, heart rate and more, leading many to believe that it would be released once the Apple Watch, which was rumored to be a revolutionary health device, hit the shelves—but that wasn’t the case.

The firm actually had no intention of launching the Simband on the open market. It was made exclusively for developers, something that became evident when it took the wraps off the Galaxy Gear 2. Naturally, we assumed Samsung had retired the Simband in favor of its Galaxy Gear line; however, new information suggests it’s still very much alive, and some of its technology could even make its way into upcoming products.

According to Dr. Francis Ho, Samsung’s Head of Digital Health, the company’s Strategy and Innovation Center (SSIC), based in South Korea, has been working with researchers on the project for the past couple of years, in an effort to build on its “Voice of Body” concept, which wants to make the idea of the human body to communicating important health information through sensors a reality.

Simband has been used for everything from autism to heart arrhythmia studies

“We invited researchers to come in and use [Simband] to do new kinds of studies,” Dr. Francis Ho told digital publication Wareable. “We work with many of these top groups in the world and they use it for everything from autism studies to heart arrhythmia studies,” he said, adding that Samsung isn’t ready to make any announcements just yet, but we could see some exciting developments in the future.

2015 Samsung merger ruled valid by Seoul court

Ilsung Pharmaceutical had filed a case to have the 2015 Samsung merger nullified. The Seoul Central District Court dismissed the case today. Ilsung had a 2.11 percent stake in Samsung C&T before the merger. The local pharmaceutical claimed that the merger with Cheil Industries was “unfair” to shareholders. The court ruled today that no illegality was found during the merger process, thus no ground existed to declare the merger as null and void.

“It is also hard to conclude that the share swap ratio was unfavorable to shareholders, and even if it was somewhat unfavorable to shareholders, it cannot be viewed that (the ratio) was significantly unfair,” the court added.

2015 Samsung Merger

The 2015 Samsung merger has come under scrutiny over the past year. Even activist hedge fund Elliott Associates claimed that the merger of Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries was to help Samsung’s founding Lee family to consolidate its power over Samsung Electronics – the crown jewel of the Samsung empire.

Samsung heir apparent Lee Jae-yong and his family owned 42 percent of Cheil Industries, the company itself owned just 1.4 percent of Samsung C&T. The merger was pushed through despite reservations expressed by minority shareholders. The Lee family was able to get what it wanted through a series of very complex cross-shareholdings that I’ve already explained in great detail.

Samsung C&T proposed to its shareholders that it would buy back their shares at the prevailing stock price after the merger was approved. The price at that point was around 57,234 won or $50.5. Five minority shareholders filed a lawsuit, they argued that the price was too low.

This is the same merger that has caused a lot of problems personally for Lee Jae-yong. The merger was at the center of the bribery and corruption probe that led to his imprisonment.

Samsung’s new Secure Element will help manufacturers develop safer IoT systems

Samsung has taken the wraps off a new integrated Secure Element (SE) turn-key solution for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The SE, which is on display at the firm’s Developer Conference in San Francisco, will help chip manufacturers employ reliable safety features, and bring innovative products and services to the market faster.

For those interested in the technical details, the SE is the first 45-nanometer (nm) chip to adopt embedded flash (eFlash), a feature that dramatically decreases data processing time and allows for more flexible software modifications compared to traditional EEPROMs. But there’s even more to the SE.

The SE is a lot smarter than you’d expect. To prevent hackers from infiltrating the SE to gain control of a system, it automatically monitors processes. If the SE happens to detect abnormal activity, it instantly resets itself, thus protecting all sensitive data store on board the Security IC (integrated circuit).

SE is another demonstration of Samsung’s advanced security technology

“Samsung’s Secure Element solution is another demonstration of our advanced security technology that has been proven through mobile application processors (AP), smart card ICs and other semiconductor products, said Ben K. Hur, Vice President of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics.
