Samsung to acquire luxury home appliance manufacturer Dacor

It has been revealed today that Samsung has entered into an agreement to acquire luxury home appliance manufacturer Dacor. It’s currently unclear why the South Korean company is purchasing the firm, but we believe that it will utilize Dacor’s branding, credibility, and resources to manufacture innovative products for the luxury IoT market.

Unfortunately, Samsung hasn’t disclosed the price of the transaction. It has confirmed, however, that upon completion of the acquisition, Dacor will instantly operate as a “wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics America and will maintain its corporate identity and brand, with no changes to its operations and US-based manufacturing.”

Galaxy Note 7 delayed in Malaysia because of supply shortage

The Galaxy Note 7 was one of the most highly anticipated flagship smartphones of this year and if pre-order performance is any indication, the handset is going to do well for itself in the market. It appears that Samsung might be facing a supply shortage at least in some markets because the company has decided to delay the Galaxy Note 7 launch in Malaysia citing supply woes.

In a statement released to the media, Samsung said that it has been experiencing a global supply constraint in meeting demands of market launches as a result of which it’s rescheduling the Malaysia launch to September 2016. Samsung does clarify that those who purchased the Galaxy Note 7 from the Samsung Malaysia pre-order website and participating retailers from August 8-10 will see their orders being fulfilled as promised. It’s unclear at this point in time when Samsung Malaysia is going to provide a confirmed launch date for September. Potential customers in Malaysia will just have to wait now as several markets across the globe get the handset on August 19. Customers in Europe can express solidarity with them as the Galaxy Note 7 will also be released in September across the continent.

Samsung Canada says Galaxy Note 7 pre-orders are ‘outstanding’

The Galaxy Note 7 can now be pre-ordered in several markets across the globe and we’ve already heard that pre-order performance has been stellar in Samsung’s home base of South Korea. That also appears to be the case elsewhere. Pre-orders for the new handset are open in Canada where it will be released on August 19th. It’s available from Bell, Telus, Rogers, Videotron, Koodo, and Eastlink. Samsung Canada has termed the Galaxy Note 7′s pre-order performance as “outstanding.”

This, despite the fact that the Galaxy Note 7 is pricey in Canada. Customers who want to buy it outright will have to pay up to $1049.99, though it can be hand for as little as $0 down on a contract with one of the carriers mentioned above. The freebies on offer are likely a catalyst for the impressive pre-order numbers. Mark Childs, the chief media officer at Samsung Canada, told MobileSyrup that “pre-orders are outstanding” for the Galaxy Note 7 and that the company is seeing the most demand for the Blue Coral color. “We are already seeing a huge response in the pre-orders that went live just after Unpacked and certainly surpassing our expectations as we head into the official launch next Friday,” he added.

Galaxy Note 7 is the first commercial smartphone to support 4×4 MIMO

Samsung talked about the Galaxy Note 7′s major features at its event but there are always some features that are only discovered later. One such discovery has now been made for the Galaxy Note 7 as well, it turns out that Samsung’s new flagship is actually the first commercial handset to support 4×4 MIMO. Users should expect faster and more reliable network connections in theory as well as overall improvements in network efficiency.

4×4 MIMO or Multiple Input Multiple Output uses 4 antennas to maintain a connection with cellular towards. Not only does it enable the handset to receive data at faster speeds but it also provides fallback channels when the other antennas can’t hold their connections properly. This should result in improved battery efficiency as well, at least in theory, but in a real world scenario, the benefits might vary. This Galaxy Note 7 handset displaying 4×4 MIMO support was discovered in a T-Mobile store even though the carrier’s network only uses 2 network layers but maps them to 4 antennas in towers that have support for 4×4 MIMO. For this to properly work both the handset and the cell towers have to fully use 4 network channels.

Support for 4×4 MIMO is limited to handsets that feature Qualcomm’s X12 LTE modem which is found in the Snapdragon 820 which means this feature is missing from the Exynos-powered variant of the Galaxy Note 7.

Galaxy S6 edge gets August security update, includes patch for ‘critical security vulnerability’

Samsung is pushing out an update to the Galaxy S6 edge to get the device on the security patches from the month of July. The changelog mentions a “patch for a critical security vulnerability”, although it’s not clear if this for the recently discovered QuadRooter vulnerability. It probably isn’t, as that exploit can only work when someone manually installs apps on their phones and Google has said that Android’s inbuilt “Verify Apps” feature can already block apps that contain QuadRooter code.

The update also brings improvements to performance with “efficient memory management” (something we have seen on previous changelogs as well), optimization to the closing of unused applications, and enhanced stability. The firmware version is G925IDVS3EPH2 and the update comes as a 63 MB download; it has gone live in India and will probably be released in other regions soon and for the regular Galaxy S6. That critical security patch might be exclusive to the S6 edge, however, so it remains to be seen if it is something that affects other recent Samsung devices.
