What is the Galaxy Fold Premier Service that Samsung’s talking about?

The Galaxy Fold is finally, finally coming out tomorrow. South Korea is the first country to get Samsung’s first foldable smartphone. The company has confirmed that it will be rolling out this device to more countries across the globe in the coming weeks.

When it was initially preparing to launch the Galaxy Fold in April this year, Samsung had said that customers would get premium aftercare. It was actually described as a ‘concierge-like service.’ The Galaxy Fold Premier Service is the manifestation of that idea.

What is the Galaxy Fold Premier Service

The company was quite vague about what this service would offer when it first talked about it earlier this year. It has now provided more information about the aftercare service that customers of its most expensive smartphone will receive.

The Galaxy Fold Premier Service will provide Galaxy Fold owners with “direct access” to Samsung experts. These experts will be able to give users tailored guidance and support over the phone at any time of the day. Customers can also get an optional one-on-one onboarding session if they would like someone to talk them through all of the new features of the Galaxy Fold.

Some might really benefit from such personalized customer service. The Galaxy Fold is fundamentally different than other smartphones even though everything about the software and UI is very familiar. That being said, this will be more of a novelty than anything else.

The customers that have been patiently waiting for it to arrive will have already done their research on how to get the most out of the Galaxy Fold. It may just be a way to provide more value with a device that costs $1,980, but it will make Galaxy Fold customers feel a bit more special.

Galaxy Fold will finally be available for purchase starting tomorrow

It was reported last week that the Galaxy Fold release date might be September 6, at least in South Korea. Samsung had previously confirmed that it would be launching the device in September. The company today announced that customers in South Korea will finally be able to purchase the Galaxy Fold starting tomorrow, September 6.

Samsung has also confirmed that it will soon be making the handset available in other markets across the globe. You can expect it to arrive in markets across Europe and the United States before the end of this month.

Galaxy Fold goes on sale starting tomorrow

The first foldable smartphone from Samsung features a 4.6-inch HD+ cover display in addition to a 7.3-inch Dynamic AMOLED Infinity Flex Display on the inside. It’s powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor with 12GB RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.0 storage. It has a total of six cameras, a 4,380mAh battery on the LTE variant and runs Android 9 Pie out of the box.

Much has already been said and written about the Galaxy Fold. We even did a review of the first iteration before Samsung decided to delay the launch as it became obvious that more work as needed. It’s putting the Galaxy Fold on the market again over five months later with significant changes that improve the device’s durability.

The Galaxy Fold will be available for purchase in South Korea from tomorrow in Cosmos Black and Space Silver. It will be released in countries like Germany, France, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States soon as well. A 5G variant will be offered in select countries as well.

Samsung will offer a specialized customer care service to Galaxy Fold owners which will include one-on-one access to Samsung experts and a 24/7 support hub that’s accessible online and over the phone. The customer service plans will vary by market and Samsung’s regional divisions will elaborate more on that individually.

Game Launcher-Discord integration goes live for the Galaxy S10

The launch of the Galaxy Note 10 series marked the beginning of a new collaboration between Samsung and Discord, whereby mobile game enthusiasts using the latest flagship can link their Discord account with Game Launcher and gain access to exclusive features. This includes a list of Discord friends shown directly in the Game Launcher, as well as a voice chat overlay. Although the Game Launcher-Discord integration debuted on the Galaxy Note 10 series, Samsung announced recently that the feature will be ported over to more Galaxy phones in the coming months. Now we can confirm that the Galaxy S10 is the first Galaxy phone, aside from the Note 10/10+, to get Game Launcher-Discord integration.

To take advantage of these features, users will still be required to install the Discord mobile app on their phones. They can then link their Discord account to Game Launcher and start receiving information about Discord friends and their activities inside Game Launcher. A feature exclusive to the Discord/Samsung partnership is the ability to instantly join a friend’s voice chat through the Discord overlay.

We tried it on the Note 10/10+ but couldn’t get it to work…

While all of the above sounds pretty exciting, especially if you’re a Discord user and a mobile gamer, there appears to be an issue with this feature in that it doesn’t seem to be working. I and our Editor-In-Chief Abhijeet have tried the feature on the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+, respectively, and although we were able to view our activity within the Discord app itself, we were unable to access our Discord friend list within Game Launcher at all. Therefore we couldn’t test any of these new features. The dedicated Discord button inside Game Launcher does work and you can launch the Discord mobile app through it, but that was the extent of our experience.

We’ve made sure that our accounts were linked and gave the proper permissions, but to no avail. We aren’t sure why we couldn’t get the feature running, but assuming we haven’t missed some obscure detail and there is indeed an issue with the integration then Samsung will likely provide a fix soon. Do try the Game Launcher-Discord integration yourself if you can, and maybe you will have more success than we did.

The feature is no longer limited to the Note 10 series and should now be available on the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ as well. It’s also going to launch for other Galaxy devices in the coming months. Just make sure to keep both the Game Launcher and Discord apps updated to their latest versions. Do let us know if you can

Samsung opens a massive experience center in London

Samsung Electronics has announced the grand opening of its Samsung KX experience center in London’s King’s Cross district today. The 20,000-square-foot futuristic showroom is located on the top floor of the Coal Drops Yard shopping complex. Though Samsung made it official today, news about this venture appeared in media reports two years back itself.

The Korean tech giant has similar experience centers in New York, Buenos Aires, Bengaluru, Paris, and other major cities. It builds these massive experience centers to showcase its current and upcoming products and services. However, they go beyond what typical retail stores offer by turning into lifestyle spaces where local culture and technology comes together.

The Samsung KX center has interactive experiences like connected Digital Cockpit for seamless driving, Galaxy Graffiti that tuns smartphones in a virtual spray can, DJ Galaxy platform to learn music, AR experiences, and more. The center also has an in-house Café for refreshments and Support Lounge for those in need of product service.

“With Samsung KX, we are creating a brand-new space for the local community, but we’re going about it in a unique way. This destination will be an incredible blend of local culture, face to face learning and innovation. We have redesigned our brand experience spaces to give consumers what they want – more dynamic, flexible locations where exploration is endless, and Samsung KX is a place where infinite possibilities are made real,” Y H Lee, Global CMO of Samsung Electronics.

Samsung KX will organize workshops and events that visitors can attend to learn new things or just have a good time. For more information about the upcoming events, you can visit the center’s website here.

Galaxy M10 update brings August 2019 security patch

Samsung’s cheapest Galaxy M series phone is getting the security patch for the month of August in India. The Galaxy M10 is being treated to a 302 MB update that is rolling out over the air and is available from our firmware database as well. It comes with software version M105FDDU2BSH2.

The update brings nothing other than security enhancements, and it’s also a tad late for the M10 to be getting the August patch as Samsung has already detailed the September security patch. The Galaxy M10 is one of many devices that are on the quarterly schedule for security updates and received its last security update back in June, which means the next one will come sometime in December. The Galaxy M10 should also be eligible for the Android 10 update, but it could be a good long while before that update arrives.

For now, if you own a Galaxy M10, you can grab the latest update over the air by going into the Software update menu in the Settings app and hitting the Download and install option. Alternatively, you can download the firmware for the update and flash it on your phone manually by connecting it to your Windows PC.

Samsung monthly updates: September 2019 security patch detailed

The list of Samsung monthly updates expands today as the company details the September 2019 security patch. The company will soon start rolling out the update to compatible devices. As you’d know by now, these updates offer little in the way of new features as they’re primarily meant to improve device security.

Samsung has a monthly Security Maintenance Release process for its mobile devices. The updates that it sends out include patches from both Google and itself. All of the patches included in the Android Security Bulletin for September 2019 are therefore included in this release.

September 2019 patch detailed as part of the Samsung monthly updates

The September 2019 security patch brings fixes for four critical vulnerabilities that were found in the Android operating system. That’s in addition to over a dozen high and moderate-risk vulnerabilities.

Fixes for 17 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures items are included as well. They’re the vulnerabilities that were found in Samsung’s own software. One of the vulnerabilities allowed attackers to change USB configuration without authentication. Another enabled brute force attacks on screen lock password.

This latest Samsung monthly update addresses all such security concerns. It shouldn’t be long now before Samsung starts rolling out the September 2019 security patch to compatible devices. We’ll be sure to let you know when the company starts sending out the firmware updates.
