Report: No 25W charging for Samsung’s clamshell foldable phone

Will the Galaxy Fold 2, or the Galaxy Z Flip as Samsung’s clamshell foldable phone is now rumored to launch as, support the company’s new 25W super fast charging tech, or will it make do with the old 15W fast charging that everyone hopes would just be phased out completely? Well, according to a new report from the Korean media, it might be the latter.

The Elec has published a report that talks about the fast charging speeds that the devices Samsung is set to announce on February 11 will offer, and it claims that all Galaxy S20 models will have 25W charging while the foldable phone will support a maximum of 15W. Samsung’s own software, however, suggests otherwise. Android 10 firmware for the Galaxy Note 9 has references to “superfast” charging for a device codenamed “bloom”, so we’re inclined to think 25W charging will be supported on the company’s next foldable.

As usual, only time will tell what is fact and what is fiction. Thankfully, we’re less than a month away from the launch of Samsung’s newest Galaxy S flagship and foldable smartphone, so it won’t be long before we find out exactly how quickly the battery on the Galaxy Fold 2 will charge.

Galaxy Fold 2 now rumored to launch as Galaxy Z Flip

The rumor mill continues to throw a wrench in our efforts to get a clear picture of what we can expect from Samsung’s next foldable phone, which is set to go official alongside the Galaxy S20 on February 20. A few days ago, a report suggested that the foldable phone everyone had been calling the Galaxy Fold 2 all this time could launch as the Galaxy Bloom instead. Now, leakster Ice universe is suggesting that the device will launch as the Galaxy Z Flip.

Why would Samsung pick such a confusing name for its next foldable smartphone after going with something as simple as the Galaxy Fold for its first foldable? Well, that’s something the company will no doubt tell us when it announces the device, provided the latest rumor is correct and Galaxy Z Flip is indeed the final name. Even if it isn’t, we can strike out Galaxy Fold 2 from the list of possible names for Samsung’s clamshell foldable, primarily because it isn’t going to be a successor to the original Galaxy Fold.

Factors like its flip phone form factor and its rumored sub-$1000 price tag put Samsung’s upcoming foldable into a different category, so a unique name that doesn’t fit any existing lineup was always expected, although that doesn’t change the fact that something like Galaxy Z Flip will be quite the confusing moniker. But everything is only a rumor at this time, so there’s no telling what Samsung will actually end up calling its second mass market foldable smartphone.

What do you think? Which of these names would you prefer for the next Galaxy foldable? Let us know in the comments!

Galaxy S20 Ultra Snapdragon variant benchmark reveals no surprises

Less than a month before the Galaxy S20 is set to go official, its Snapdragon variant has made its first appearance on the Geekbench benchmark database. Specifically, someone tested the SM-G986U, which should be the 5G variant of the Galaxy S20 Ultra, the top-end Galaxy S20 model (for those who missed it, Samsung’s next flagship reportedly isn’t going to be called Galaxy S11). As expected, the benchmark doesn’t hold any surprises.

According to Geekbench, the benchmarked device was running on a Qualcomm chip codenamed “kona”. That would be the Snapdragon 865, the chip Samsung will use for its flagship in the United States and Canada (and most likely China). The scores for the Snapdragon variant are notably higher than the Exynos variant that had popped up on Geekbench a couple of months ago. That is probably because Samsung has managed to better optimize the software since then, which is standard fare in the development life cycle for every new smartphone.

The Snapdragon 865 is accompanied by 12 gigs of RAM, which we’re assuming will be the minimum available on the Ultra model. The Galaxy S20 series will run Android 10 out of the box like other newly announced Galaxy devices, although it will come with version 2.1 of One UI, as we had exclusively revealed a few months back. The benchmark doesn’t reveal much else, but there are plenty of rumors and leaks floating around that give us a fairly good idea of what to expect.

Leaked Galaxy S20+ 5G images show off Samsung’s next flagship

We’re less than a month away from Samsung’s Unpacked event on February 11 where it will unveil the Galaxy S20. More than a few reports now have backed up the theory that the Galaxy S11 is actually going to launch as the Galaxy S20.

The three models are now expected to be called the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Samsung will likely offer 5G variants of all three models. The images that have been leaked online today appear to be of the Galaxy S20+ 5G.

First leaked Galaxy S20+ 5G images surface

From what we know about the Galaxy S20 so far, the Galaxy S20+ will likely feature a 6.7-inch display. It will most certainly be an Infinity-O panel with a centered punch hole for the front camera. The Galaxy S20 Ultra may have a 6.9-inch display. We have already confirmed that the panel will have a super smooth 120Hz refresh rate.

The images that were leaked online today by XDA Developers appear to show a Galaxy S20+ 5G booting up. We also get a picture of the back with a rather ironic sticker cautioning against leaking information. As expected, the Galaxy S20 will end a signature Samsung design element by opting for a vertical placement of the camera setup.

The handset appears to have a quad-camera system at the back with a ToF sensor and flash. The accompanying report suggests that the Galaxy S20+ will come with a new 12MP 1.8μm primary sensor, which means that Samsung’s 108MP sensor might only be available on the Galaxy S20 Ultra. The camera setup will also include an ultra-wide, telephoto and possibly a macro camera as well.

There’s nothing really shocking about the Galaxy S20’s design. It appears to be quite similar to the renders leaked previously. However, the source quoted in this report claims that the Infinity-O display feels less curved than before, almost flat even. A presumption is drawn that Samsung may have used 2.5D glass instead of its curved glass. That’s not something that will make a huge difference for most customers, though.

The US is reportedly set to get only 5G variants of the next flagship while the 4G variant will be offered in other markets. Samsung will officially unveil the Galaxy S20 at its Unpacked event on February 11. We’ll be on the ground in San Francisco to bring you all of the latest developments from the event.
