Galaxy Note 10 cutout wallpapers section live on the Galaxy Store

With just a day to go before the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ go on sale, Samsung has created a dedicated section on the Galaxy Store for cutout wallpapers for its new flagships. Wallpapers found in this section make creative use of the Note 10’s centered camera punch hole to make it less jarring for users of the device, at least when they’re on the home screen or lock screen.

As expected, the collection of cutout wallpapers is pretty small right now, but it should expand in the coming weeks as more wallpaper and theme creators jump on the bandwagon. We are likely to see amazing wallpapers from other sources as well, like the folks over at Reddit who have been putting up Galaxy Note 10 wallpapers that embrace the cutout for almost a week at this point. Whether Samsung will release official cutout wallpapers in partnership with Disney, as it did for the Galaxy S10+, remains to be seen.

You can click this link on your Note 10 (or a Galaxy S10) to see all the cutout wallpapers on the Galaxy Store. Do tell us if you will be hiding the punch hole on your Note 10 or Note 10+ with one of these wallpapers!

Samsung’s Giphy helps you fight iPhone ‘blue bubble’ purists

Have you ever texted an iPhone user and received a snarky reply criticizing your smartphone brand of choice? Have you ever been made fun of by an iPhone user because of your green text bubbles? And if so, did you ever wish you’d have a quick and effective comeback? Well, Samsung has got you covered with a new dedicated Giphy page filled with GIFs designed to convey the same message, more or less. And the message is #GreenDontCare.

To give you a bit of context, text messages sent from Android to iOS users are highlighted on the iPhone’s screen in a green bubble instead of a blue one. Essentially, iOS treats Android text messages differently than messages from iOS users, and this may or may not create a divide between the people tapping the screens. You may not be aware of this, but apparently, some iPhone users are judgmental toward the green bubble crowd, and what better way to combat this attitude than with a bit of humor?

Among all the Android OEMs, Samsung has been the only one to be able and successfully mock Apple, particularly through humorous ads, even though the company backtracked on the 3.5mm headphone jack mockery quite recently, in anticipation of the Galaxy Note 10 market launch. This time, however, Samsung wants to put the right tools for the job in the hands of its fan base, and thus the Giphy page was created. More so, the company also seems to have teamed up with a number of popular Instagram users to promote the new #GreenDontCare movement.

So, in conclusion, if you happen to have a friend who uses an iPhone and mocks your green text bubble, or if you want to be prepared for the eventuality that you might come across the most supercilious iPhone users, check out Samsung’s Giphy page and grab some digital ammunition. And if you ever had an unusual back-and-forth with an iPhone user via text, feel free to share your story in the comment section. Otherwise, let us know which GIFs you like the most.

Samsung UK offers AKG Y500 for free when buying one of these phones

Samsung UK is offering a new incentive for customers who might want to buy the Galaxy A50, A70, A80, or Galaxy S10e. Starting today, August 21, and until September 19, ordering one of these smartphones in the UK from the official website will bag you a pair of AKG Y500 wireless headphones worth £129 for free. The headphones will ship within 45 days of validation of your purchase, and you won’t be able to pick a color as the offer includes only the black model.

The AKG Y500 wireless headphones seem to be the preferred choice for Samsung’s smartphone incentives. The same headphones were also offered for free along with Galaxy A80 pre-orders in the UK, so if you’ve missed out on that offer, which ended July 18, then this might be your second chance. Interestingly enough, there’s a similar offer at Carphone Warehouse when buying one of the eligible smartphones on a monthly plan, except it doesn’t cover the Galaxy A70.

With the Galaxy Note 10 series scheduled to hit the shelves on August 23, and with a new Galaxy A series seemingly in the works for next year, it looks like Samsung might want to unload some of its stock. If you need your memory jogged, we think the Galaxy A50 offers exceptional value-for-money, while the Galaxy A70 was dubbed in our review as a “media consumption powerhouse” with amazing battery life. Meanwhile, the Galaxy A80 is kind of a mixed bag that costs a bit too much, while the Galaxy S10e is a great compact flagship. Which one would you pick along with the free AKG Y500 wireless headphones? Drop us a line in the comment section.

Samsung DeX PC app available ahead of schedule, we take it for a spin

When Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 10 series earlier this month, the company also revealed a major update to the DeX platform, among other features. With the new DeX PC app, Samsung will allow Note 10 users to connect their phones to a Windows PC or Mac via a USB cable and gain access to the multitasking platform without requiring a video connection. The new DeX PC app is supposed to launch after the Galaxy Note 10 series, but as discovered by XDA-Developers, the application is now available for download from Samsung’s website via a direct download link (for Windows) ahead of the scheduled release.

The fine print on the official Samsung DeX page continues to suggest that the PC app is not yet available for download. However, it seems like customers can now get a head start by grabbing the app through the aforementioned direct download link, so if you wish to prepare your computer for DeX before you’ll pick up the Galaxy Note 10 or Note 10+ later this week, you can.

The  DeX PC app is compatible only with the Galaxy Note 10 series. It won’t work with the Galaxy Note 9 or Galaxy S10 lineup (we’ve tried), but the Galaxy S9 series and newer models could get this functionality with the Android Q and One UI 2.0 update. Having said that, right now you won’t get much out of the new DeX app unless you have the latest S Pen flagship in your possession.

We’ve tried DeX with our Galaxy Note 10+ review unit and Windows

Once you do get the Note 10 hooked up to your computer via DeX, you’ll be able to start transferring files, check text messages, take phone calls, and more. There is a caveat, in that we were only able to transfer files from the PC to the phone via DeX, but not the other way around. In other words, you can’t simply drag a photo from your Note 10 gallery and drop it onto your computer’s desktop. It just won’t work.

We’ve also tried a couple of mobile games, and it does seem like performance takes a visible hit sometimes. Not just the games themselves, but DeX as a whole seems to be less responsive when running a demanding 3D app. We’ve tried Asphalt 9 and the animations were a bit jittery but the game was still very playable. Also worth noting is that Asphalt 9 worked with a mouse and keyboard via DeX but didn’t detect our Xbox controller. This doesn’t look like a game-specific issue, but rather DeX doesn’t seem to be capable of detecting controllers hooked up to the computer. Nevertheless, you might gain a competitive edge in mobile games, as long as they work better with a mouse and keyboard.

It is worth reminding that the app is not yet quite officially launched, so compatibility with input devices and even performance may change in the near future. Are you excited about the new DeX PC application? Will you integrate it into your daily routine? Let us know in the comment section.

Nearly one-third of TVs sold in Q2 2019 were Samsung made

Samsung has been the world’s number one TV manufacturer for 13 consecutive years, and it has continued its dominance this year as well. According to market researcher IHS Markit, Samsung TVs accounted for 31.5% of the total shipments by value in Q2 2019.

This is Samsung’s highest market share in six years, the report noted. The South Korean giant was distantly followed by local rival LG with 16.5% market share. Japan’s Sony was the third biggest TV vendor with 8.8% market share in the April-June period.

Strong hold in the premium TV segment

Samsung’s numbers look even better when it comes to premium TVs, which the report classifies as models that are larger than 75 inches and cost more than $2,500. More than 50% of the premium TVs sold during the three-month period were Samsung made, IHS Markit said. The Korean company is expected to further strengthen its lead in the premium TV segment in the future.

Samsung currently uses Micro LED and Quantum Dot LED panels in its TVs. The company has long argued that OLED displays are not suitable for TVs. However, it is now planning to bring quantum-dot and OLED technologies together to create a hybrid display. Samsung may use the QD-OLED panels in its future TV offerings. The company is shutting down one of its LCD plants and will reportedly repurpose it to make QD-OLED displays.
