Marriott and Samsung team up to offer in-room virtual reality travel experience

Global hotel chain Marriott today announced the launch of “VRoom Service,” a first-of-its-kind service which allows guests to order virtual reality experiences straight from the comfort of their rooms. VRoom Service has been created in collaboration with Samsung Electronics America and it’s certainly a first in the industry. At select Marriott properties guests can call the dedicated VRoom Service extension or use the hotel chain’s mobile app to request the Gear VR headset with headphones. They will be hand-delivered to rooms with easy instructions, guests can loan these for up to 24 hours.

The program is being tested for a fortnight at New York Marriott Marquis and London Marriott Park Lane properties, let’s see how long it takes before the company decides to offer this service at some of its other properties across the globe. What good is a VR headset if there’s no content? That’s why Marriott has created a new virtual travel content platform called “VR Postcards,” it brings immersive travel stories that people can experience in 360 3D with the Gear VR headset. VR postcards will be available to guests who loan the Gear VR through Marriott’s VRoom service, it will also be released to the public through Samsung Milk VR premium.

Samsung gets another patent for a foldable smartphone

Samsung holds many patents related to foldable devices and flexible displays, it has built this collection of patents over several years and the company doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon. It was reported late last year that by the end of 2015 Samsung will launch a foldable device to breathe new life in its mobile business but there’s no indication as yet that such a product could arrive this year. Perhaps Samsung decided to delay its launch or perhaps it wasn’t even in the pipeline to begin with, the fact remains though that Samsung continues to patent technology that will one day make foldable smartphones a reality and one such recent patent has now been discovered.

The patent notes that the folding mechanism of this device is under the display and the flexible OLED display is capable of folding in the middle using an elastic unit that’s configured to apply tensile force to the device at unfolded position. The company filed for this patent in February this year and despite the fact it has been granted one can’t really say for sure if the company will ever bring this technology to market. It just might though, as we reported exclusively about four months back, Samsung is developing a new foldable smartphone under codename Project Valley.

Project Valley is said to be in the early stages of development so it’s unlikely that a commercial release might take place this year, according to what we hear the device will support multiple gestures for switching between two screens and that it’s codenamed Project Valley because the phone likely has two sides that fold together and if you hold them apart just so they look like a valley. As previously mentioned it’s too soon to say anything for sure right now, nevertheless it certainly would be an interesting year for Samsung fans if the company were to release a foldable smartphone in 2016.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play edition gets Android 5.1 update

Google started the Google Play edition initiative to offer consumers regular non-Nexus smartphones with stock Android and quick access to the latest updates, and Samsung participated by launching the Galaxy S4 Google Play edition (GPe) back in 2013. Everything was well and good until earlier this year, when the Galaxy S4 GPe became the only GPe device to not have received the Android 5.1 update. We reported that the update would someday make it to the phone, and that day has finally arrived, at a time when most users of the S4 GPe probably don’t care any more.

To make matters worse, this update is based on 5.1 instead of 5.1.1, though we’re guessing (read hoping) it incorporates all the latest fixes and improvements. Android Police reports that the update is build LMY47O (which came out way back in April for Nexus smartphones), and is available over the air right now. If you’re one of the few that actually bought the Galaxy S4 GPe, you should be able to grab the update from the Settings » About phone » System updates menu, or you can download the OTA file from the source link and try to sideload it using a PC.

It’s a good thing that Galaxy S5 Google Play edition never materialized, right?

Themes Thursday: Three dozen themes made their way into Samsung’s Theme Store today

Themes Thursday is back! Samsung has released no less than 36 themes in the theme store today, and some of them are quite good. All these themes should be compatible with recently released high-end smartphones such as the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S6 edge, the Galaxy S6 edge+, and the Galaxy Note 5. However, a lot of themes must have been released for the Galaxy A8, the Galaxy J5, and the Galaxy J7 as well.

Here are some new themes that we liked from this week’s release. There are a bunch of themes such as Absolute Minimal, Rotox, and Material Flat Light that follow Material Design guidelines, while a couple of them such as Black Sky and Carbon Fibre would please the ones who like dark or black themes. Sooty brings bright colors to your Samsung smartphone, while Emerald theme has a background that is similar to the wallpapers that came with the Galaxy S5.

Out of all the themes that were released today, nine are paid (including Absolute Minimal), while others are free. How many themes were released in your region? We hope that Samsung has released something for everyone, so let us know the themes that you liked this week.

Samsung Galaxy J2 (SM-J200) has passed the FCC certification

It looks like the Galaxy J2′s announcement is imminent as the device has just passed through the FCC, and it has also made an appearance on Samsung’s support page as the SM-J200H. The device was brought to India for research and development a month ago and it looks like things went smooth and we might be seeing the device out in the wild soon. We have no idea what the phone will look like in terms of design but we do know most of its specs.

These specs include a 4.5-inch WVGA display, an Exynos 3475 CPU, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage, 5 and 2-megapixel rear and front cameras, a 2,000 mAh battery, and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. If you’ll take a look at our firmware page you should see that the first firmware for the SM-J200H is also rolling out, which is another indication that we might see an official announcement very soon.

Exclusive: First Galaxy S7 details emerge, codenamed Project Lucky

We heard rumors that Samsung was opting for a new development method to fast track work on the Galaxy S7, and the early launch of the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ certainly enhanced the possibility that we might see the next Galaxy S flagship make an early appearance as well. A Samsung smartphone with the name “Lucky-LTE” appeared on the Geekbench benchmark database recently, and we can now confirm that this device is the Galaxy S7, which has been codenamed Project Lucky internally.

There’s probably a simple reason why Samsung is using that word for its next flagship – the number 7 has been called the lucky number for ages, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why the Galaxy S7 is being termed Lucky by the Korean giant. But whatever the reasoning behind the codename might be, let’s get on to the more interesting stuff.

The Galaxy S7 is being tested with a new Exynos 8890 chipset, which is most likely the M1 Mongoose SoC that reared its face a couple of weeks ago. The Mongoose scored impressively in the Geekbench benchmark when we first saw it, but the prototype S7 that appeared recently didn’t do so well. We’re told that’s because the device was tested with the CPU at a lower frequency, and that 2.3GHz is the final target. Oh, and it seems the Snapdragon 820 might indeed be powering some variants, most likely in the US where CDMA networks are still in operation. Don’t be surprised by this; Samsung had said during the S6′ launch that it’s still open to using Qualcomm’s mobile processors as long as they are good enough, something the Snapdragon 810 wasn’t.

Next, let’s talk about storage and SD cards. Our insiders tell us that the Galaxy S7 is being tested with Samsung’s screaming fast UFS 2.0 storage, but the company might have found a way to make it work with SD cards. As we explained earlier this year, the memory controller on SD cards and the UFS 2.0 storage aren’t compatible with each other, making it impossible for them to co-exist on the same device. Samsung probably is trying out interfacing techniques to get around the limitation, though it would be best to not get too hopeful that the final product will bring back expandable storage to Samsung’s flagship line.

Finally, Samsung is supposedly testing a new 20-megapixel ISOCELL camera on the Galaxy S7, and also a project called the “all lens cover.” We have no idea what this project is; it’s perhaps a cover that will add additional lenses for the camera on to the phone, but we admit we’re in the dark about what the actual purpose will be.

As always, all this is early information and things could change by the time the Galaxy S7 comes to market. We’re certainly looking forward to Samsung surprising us with new stuff considering the turnaround it has made this year with its smartphones, and we will be sharing any details we come across with our readers in the future.

TripCase will soon launch its travel app for the Gear S2

TripCase first launched rich notification support for Samsung’s first Tizen-powered smartwatch the Gear S and at that time the company said it was working on a full-fledged app for Samsung’s Tizen smartwatches. With Samsung unveiling the Gear S2 earlier this month it’s a good time for TripCase to follow through on its promise, TripCase has announced that it’s full travel app will soon be available for the Gear S2.

With TripCase for the Gear S2 you will be able to view upcoming trip items right from the smartwatch either by glancing at the custom-design watchface or by launching the app. It’s capable of displaying a map of your destination and a convenient “Remember This Place” feature that lets you store precise locations where you might want to go back again. Since this is a companion app for TripCase on Android all data between the phone and the Gear S2 will be automatically synced at all times so when you jump between the two devices you don’t have to start from scratch. TripCase will continue to deliver free real-time travel notifications like it already does, the app itself will be released when the Gear S2 arrives this fall.
