Galaxy M51, Galaxy M31s rumored to feature 64MP quad-cameras

Samsung is prepping for the launch of various Galaxy A and Galaxy M series smartphones. The Galaxy M01 and the Galaxy M11 are expected to be launched in India next month. The company also has plans to launch more Galaxy M series smartphones, including the Galaxy M51. Although not much is known about the Galaxy M51, a few camera specs of the device have been leaked along with its launch time frame.

Earlier, we had exclusively reported that the Galaxy M51 is essentially a rebranded Galaxy A51 with a few design and hardware changes. According to a new report, the Galaxy M51 would come with a quad-camera setup featuring a 64MP ISOCELL Bright GW1 image sensor. Samsung confirmed that it will launch the smartphone in India in July 2020. The Galaxy A51 features a quad-camera setup as well, but it uses a 48MP primary sensor.

We had also confirmed that the Galaxy M51 will bear model number SM-M515F and that it will have a variant with 128GB internal storage. The Galaxy M31s (SM-M317F) is also reportedly under development and is slated to launch sometime later this year. The Galaxy M31s will reportedly come with a 64MP quad-camera setup and 128GB storage as well.

Nothing else is known about the Galaxy M31s and the Galaxy M51, and we’ll have to wait for their official releases for more information.

Mass production of 5nm Exynos chipsets to reportedly start from August

The 7nm Exynos 990 chipset that debuted with the Galaxy S20 series was heavily criticized due to its relatively higher power consumption and performance throttling. Later, it was revealed that Samsung is making improvements to the chipset and is planning to launch a revised version of the processor in the second half of this year. Now, it is being reported that the South Korean tech giant will start the mass production of 5nm Exynos chipsets from August.

According to the information from industry sources who talked to ZDNet Korea, Samsung has completed all preparations needed for the mass production of the next-generation Exynos SoC based on the 5nm EUV process. Now, Samsung’s semiconductor arm is waiting for the smartphone division’s decision of whether or not to use it in the Galaxy Note 20 series. The company had recently announced that it is ready to start the mass production of 5nm chipsets.

The report states that the Exynos 992 could use ARM’s new Cortex-A78 CPU and Mali-G78 GPU architectures for improved performance. It also says that Samsung will use the 5nm Exynos processor in the South Korean version of the Galaxy Note 20 to display the competitive edge of its Foundry and System LSI divisions. However, there are some inconsistencies in the report. ARM’s new CPU and GPU aren’t expected to make it into chipsets before 2021, so you should take this information with a pinch fo salt.

It was also rumored that Samsung is designing a custom SoC for Google. The processor reportedly uses two Cortex-A78 CPU cores, two Cortex-A76 CPU cores, four Cortex-A55 CPU cores, Mali-G78 MP20 GPU, and Google’s Visual Core ISP and NPU. The South Korean firm had started the development of two Mongoose custom CPU cores but ditched those projects and decided to go with stock ARM cores. Samsung also decided to switch to AMD Radeon graphics for its 2021 Exynos processor.

Indian pricing for Galaxy M01, Galaxy M11 leaks ahead of launch

Samsung India is prepping for the launch of two new entry-level smartphones, the Galaxy M01 and the Galaxy M11. However, pricing for both smartphones has been leaked ahead of the official announcement. Earlier this week, possible Indian pricing for the two phones was suggested, but the new leak seems more accurate.

According to noted tipster Ishan Agarwal, Samsung will launch the Galaxy M01 in India for INR 8,999 (around $120) for the 3GB RAM + 32GB storage variant. The variant of the Galaxy M11 3GB RAM and 32GB storage could cost INR 10,999 (around $145), while the variant with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage could launch with a price tag of INR 12,999 (around $170).

This pricing is for retail stores, and online stores could price the Galaxy M01 and the Galaxy M11 phones differently.

Galaxy M01 specs

The Galaxy M01 will make its debut with the Indian market. It could feature a 5.7-inch IPS LCD screen with HD+ resolution and a waterdrop-shaped notch. The phone runs Android 10 with One UI 2.0. The Galaxy M01 seems to be equipped with the Snapdragon 439 processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot. The phone will likely feature a dual-camera setup, consisting of a 13MP primary sensor and a 2MP depth sensor.

The phone will feature a dual-SIM card slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It lacks a fingerprint reader. We had revealed earlier that the Galaxy M01 would be launched in at least four Asian markets, including India, Nepal, Russia, and Sri Lanka. The upcoming entry-level smartphone will come in at least three color variants: black, blue, and red.

Galaxy M11 specs

The Galaxy M11 has already been launched in Vietnam. It features a 6.4-inch IPS LCD screen with HD resolution and a punch-hole cutout in the top-left corner for the selfie camera. It runs Android 10 with One UI 2.0 and uses the Snapdragon 450 SoC. It has 3GB/4GB RAM, 32GB/64GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot. The phone is powered by a 5,000mAh battery and it supports 15W fast charging.

At the rear, the Galaxy M11 has a triple-camera setup, including a 13MP primary sensor, a 5MP ultrawide camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. The front-facing camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels. It has a rear-facing fingerprint reader. The Galaxy M11 also features GPS, dual-SIM card slot, LTE, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It comes in three colors: black, blue, and violet.

Best Buy already has discounts on the Galaxy S20 5G for Verizon

If you plan on pre-ordering Verizon’s Galaxy S20 5G ahead of the official June 4 release, you can now take advantage of a hefty discount by pre-ordering the phone from Best Buy. The so-called Galaxy S20 5G UW with 128GB of storage can now be pre-ordered on a Verizon 24-month agreement for just $29.16 a month, down from $42.67.

Oddly enough, this offer is available only for the Galaxy S20 5G UW in Cosmic Gray. For other color variants like Cloud Pink and Cloud White, you’d have to pay the full price when pre-ordering the phone via Best Buy. In addition to this ongoing discount, Best Buy is pairing your Verizon Galaxy S20 5G with a $50 gift card.

Why is Verizon’s Galaxy S20 5G arriving this late?

You can read more about the reasons behind the phone’s late arrival on Verizon’s network in our prior story, but the gist of it is that the smaller Galaxy S20 model doesn’t support Verizon’s mmWave 5G network out of the box.

Verizon’s Galaxy S20 5G required special treatment. It’s technically a custom 5G version of the Galaxy S20, and it had to be released a bit later for this reason. However, Verizon’s Galaxy S20 5G is the same as the regular S20 5G in every other aspect. It shares every other specification with the standard Galaxy S20 5G model, from the screen size to the internal hardware.

  • Model: SM-G981U
  • Dimensions: Bar: 151.7 x 69.1 x 7.9 mm
  • Display: 6.2 inch / 157.48 mm Dynamic AMOLED 2X
  • CPU: Snapdragon 865
  • Camera: 12MP

Samsung Vietnam launches affordably priced Galaxy A21s

The Galaxy A21s, Samsung’s latest value-oriented Android smartphone specifically catering to youth, is official in Vietnam as of today. Starting at 4,690,000 dong ($200), the Galaxy A21s is one of the most affordable entry points into Samsung’s full-screen handsets to date. Its Vietnamese debut arrives mere two weeks following the gadget’s international announcement.

If 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage space offered by the base Galaxy A21s model isn’t enough, a 6GB/64GB configuration is also on the cards, priced at 5,690,000 ($243). In most respects, this particular variant offers even more bang for the buck. Both versions are available for purchase in Vietnam as of today in black, white, and blue color options (pictured above). While already confirmed for some other markets such as Spain, the Galaxy A21s won’t be hitting the Old Continent until late June.

A full-screen, quadruple-camera phone with a $200 price tag

Memory differences aside, both Galaxy A21s models ship with a 6.5-inch Infinity-O display (720 x 1,560), 2.0GHz Exynos 850 chipset, and a 5,000mAh battery with 15W fast charging support. Speaking of which, a compatible quick charger is also part of the package. One UI 2.0 based on Android 10 comes pre-installed on this device which tips the scales at 192g and measures in 163.6 x 75.3 x 8.9mm. The main selling point of the Galaxy A21s is certainly its quad-camera setup revolving around a 48-megapixel (f/2.0) module supported by an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and two extra 2-megapixel shooters for macro photography and depth-sensing features. Sitting on the opposite side is a 13-megapixel (f/2.2) camera devised for the sharpest selfies in this price range.

Vietnamese consumers will be able to order the Galaxy A21s both online and offline starting today.

Samsung Money offers a new account and debit card tied to Samsung Pay

It was revealed last month that Samsung is going to launch a Samsung Pay debit card this summer. It would be doing this in partnership with SoFi, a San Francisco-based online personal finance company. This new partnership would transform Samsung Pay into a more rewarding way to manage your money.

We finally get to see today just what this partnership between Samsung and SoFi brings. Samsung Money by SoFi has been unveiled today, it’s a mobile-first money management experience that offers a cash management account and a physical Mastercard debit card with exclusive benefits tied to Samsung Pay.

Samsung Money launched in collaboration with SoFi

Customers who sign up for the account won’t have to pay any account fees and will be able to earn a higher interest on savings relative to the national average of transactional accounts. Users can either open an individual or a joint cash management account and will benefit from in-network ATM fee reimbursement at over 55,000 locations in the US. The Samsung Money accounts are FDIC insured for up to $1.5 million which is six times that of a normal bank account.

Accounts can be set up through the Samsung Pay app in no time. The virtual card will be available for use in Samsung Pay immediately upon approval. Once the physical debit card arrives in the mail, users don’t have to call a number to activate it, they can do that with just one tap in the Samsung Pay app. To increase security, the physical card won’t display sensitive details like the card number, expiration date or CVV. Users can find this information in the app.

The app also provides powerful money management tools to Samsung Money users. They can check their balance, review statements and search transactions. Additional tools include the ability to flag suspicious transactions, freeze or unfreeze their card, pause or restart spending, assign a trusted contact and change their PIN.

Samsung Rewards members already earn points for purchases that they make using Samsung Pay. The company will now allow users with 1,000 or more Samsung Rewards Points to redeem the points for cash that’s deposited directly into their Samsung Money account.

Samsung Money is going to be available to consumers in the United States later this summer. Those who are interested can sign up for the waitlist on Samsung’s website.

Samsung official says Galaxy S20 parts orders haven’t been halted

A few weeks back, a report from the Taiwanese media claimed that Samsung decided to temporarily halt Galaxy S20 component orders from Taiwanese suppliers on account of poor sales caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, according to a new report from The Korea Times citing a Samsung official, these early reports were incorrect.

We have never send an official request. The report is groundless, said the official cited by the online publication earlier today. The original report claimed that samsung halted orders from four different Galaxy S20 component suppliers in Taiwan, including lens supplier Largan, and cooling module manufacturer AURAS.

Other industry watchers seemingly agree that halting orders as abruptly as the original report had suggested is improbable. Although there have been only a few incidences of a firm abruptly halting an order, huge OEMs like Samsung conduct a demand forecast months in advance, so it would be unusual for Samsung to halt Galaxy S20 component orders without much notice.

Whatever the case may be, there’s no denying the fact that Samsung shipped fewer Galaxy S20 units in Q1 than expected largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with shipment figures falling well below those of the Galaxy S10 series last year. The virus led to various Samsung plants halting their operations, and other reports claim that the company has been using a stockpile of components to resume manufacturing instead of placing new orders.

The Galaxy S20 hasn’t been the success story Samsung may have wanted, and although many fans blame a rocky camera experience at launch and the Exynos 990 chipset for these results, other, and arguably bigger factors were at play. The COVID-19 pandemic not only caused factories to temporarily shut down, but physical retail outlets too. Many smartphone buyers have been more careful with their spendings over the past few months, and this is reflected not only in Samsung’s flagship sales figures, but the global smartphone market as a whole, which saw a steep decline in demand since the beginning of the year.

Samsung now bringing thousands of consumer electronics retailers online

Samsung partnered with India’s payments and installments platform Benow earlier this month to bring 20,000 smartphone retailers online, and now, the company is expanding its Benow partnership to give domestic consumer electronics retailers and customers the same opportunities.

Through this Samsung-Benow partnership, offline retailers now have an e-commerce avenue and customers are able to purchase consumer electronics online, from the comfort of their homes, through various payment methods including cash on delivery, debit and credit cards, easy EMI, and more.

~5,000 retailers already take advantage of this Samsung-Benow partnership

According to the local media, roughly 5,000 offline consumer electronics retailers in India have signed up to benefit from this alliance between Samsung and Benow. Other retailers can join the e-commerce movement through the Benow app and after Samsung shares the respective retailers’ details with Benow. Therefore, the number of Indian offline retailers to offer Samsung consumer electronics through this online avenue is bound to continue to grow.

Samsung and Benow have already brought more than 20,000 Indian offline smartphone retailers in the e-commerce space in under a month. This strategy was initiated in large part by the COVID-19 lockdown. It provides means of increasing sales for Samsung while giving customers a safe way to shop for mobile devices. Now, prospective buyers can use Benow to shop for a wider variety of Samsung products, ranging from TVs to refrigerators.

Samsung India launches best-ever Galaxy A51 model with even more RAM

Samsung India today announced the arrival of the best-ever Galaxy A51 model featuring an unprecedented amount of RAM for one of the company’s mid-rangers. The latest addition to the smartphone family is equipped with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of flash memory, expandable by up to 512GB via a microSD card slot. This added luxury will set you back Rs 27,999 ($370), which is only slightly higher than the Rs 25,250 ($330) price tag attached to the 6GB/128GB configuration.

The release marks yet another one of the manufacturer’s attempts to double down on the Galaxy A51, which has been one of Samsung’s best-selling smartphone lineups since its late 2019 debut. Indian consumers will be able to get their hands on the new device iteration both online and offline, with Samsung confirming its availability in three colors: Prism Crush White, Prism Crush Black, and Prism Crush Blue.

The Galaxy A51 is all about value

The Galaxy A51’s success – both in India and beyond – can largely be attributed to the smartphone’s value-oriented nature. Behind its aggressive pricing is a versatile smartphone sporting a 6.5-inch AMOLED display, 4,000mAh battery, and the AI-infused Exynos 9611 chipset. Its quad-camera setup combines a 48-megapixel module with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide shooter, as well as two more 5-megapixel sensors fine-tuned for depth-sensing and macro photography, respectively.

Thanks in part to the Galaxy A50, Samsung made $1 billion with the A series in India alone, and this year’s follow-up range appears to be on course to end up in a similar ballpark revenue-wise. The 8GB RAM models already made their way to some other countries such as Malaysia, and more markets are likely to follow soon.

Samsung starts mass-producing Galaxy Fold 2, August launch likely

The Galaxy Fold 2 still appears to be on course for an August launch as Samsung now commenced the mass production of its next high-end foldable. Sources from South Korea claim the production order was given in the last several days and includes Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) technology, which would make the Galaxy Fold 2 Samsung’s second device to utilize this solution after the Galaxy Z Flip. In effect, the smartphone should be more durable than its direct predecessor, the 2019 Galaxy Fold.

As foldable smartphone technologies mature, the prices of such products should start declining, though the Galaxy Fold 2 isn’t expected to be much cheaper than its direct prequel. According to previous reports, the device is likely to start at around $1,880 in the United States, which would make it $100 more affordable than the Galaxy Fold.

Samsung’s third foldable not launching alone

Last year, the initial production run of the Galaxy Fold yielded approximately 500,000 units. This summer, that figure is expected to grow by up to six times, industry insiders believe. In other words, Samsung may have as many as three million Galaxy Fold 2 units come August, when its next foldable smartphone range is expected to release. The tech giant also isn’t worried about any meaningful competition, with Huawei’s own foldables likely to remain China-only products until at least 2021, courtesy of the Trump administration’s trade sanctions imposed on the Shenzen manufacturer.

By most accounts, Samsung will be launching the Galaxy Fold 2 alongside the Galaxy Note 20 and perhaps even the Galaxy Tab S7 series. The ongoing coronavirus crisis isn’t expected to drastically impact Galaxy Fold 2 sales as foldable smartphones remain a highly niche product category.

Samsung to reportedly supply nearly 80 percent OLED displays for iPhone 12

Samsung is the world’s largest smartphone OLED panel maker, and it makes the industry’s best OLED screens. The company provides OLED screens to various brands, including Apple, Huawei, OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi. However, it was reported earlier this year that the South Korean firm might lose the iPhone display contract to BOE and LG, but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.

According to a new report, Samsung Display has bagged nearly 80 percent of all OLED panel orders from Apple for the iPhone 12 lineup. China’s BOE and South Korea’s LG Display would fill in with the remaining 20 percent of OLED panels. Samsung was the exclusive OLED display supplier for the iPhone X in 2017. However, Apple added LG to the mix in 2018 for the iPhone Xs and the iPhone Xs Max. This year, the iPhone maker is adding BOE as its third supplier in a bid to diversify its supply chain.

It is being rumored that Apple will completely shift to OLED screens for the first time with the iPhone 12 lineup. There could be as many as four iPhone 12 variants: iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Max, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The 5.4-inch iPhone 12 and the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Max are expected to use 60Hz screens, while 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max could feature screens with 120Hz refresh rate.
