Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge pre-orders have surpassed Samsung’s expectations

An earlier report claimed that pre-orders for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge were lower than the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, and Samsung has now officially weighed in on the matter. According to Koh Dong-jin, the president of the company’s mobile division, pre-orders for the new flagships have been stronger than expected. Samsung is also expecting the S7 and S7 edge to help it gain back some market share in China, where the abundance of affordable high-end smartphones has strongly affected Samsung’s smartphones sales in the last year or so.

Now, whether the stronger-than-expected pre-orders mean that demand has been higher than the S6 and S6 edge is something that hasn’t been made clear. It could be that the Korean giant had simply lowered expectations this year to see how things turn out after the dip in sales following the launch of last year’s Galaxy S flagships. The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge certainly seem set for a strong market performance – both handsets have received glowing reviews and offer a complete smartphone package. The Galaxy S7 edge in particular is an impressive device, as we mentioned in our complete review.

Galaxy S7 gets the teardown treatment

The ever-reliable folks over at iFixit have just published their teardown of Samsung’s flagship smartphone of 2016, the Galaxy S7, showing us just how arduous it is or isn’t to repair. Although the handset only took seventeen steps to be dismantled, it did prove to be pretty difficult to prise apart due to an abundance of small parts, screws and waterproofing adhesive, which, therefore, made it somewhat tedious to rebuild. For this reason, the disassembly team rated the device a measly 3 out of 10 on the repairability scale, with 10 being the easiest and 0 the most difficult.

A few key images from the teardown can be seen below:

Samsung rolls out an urgent software update for the Galaxy S7 edge

If you’re one of those lucky customers who have received their units prior to the official March 11 release date then you might want to keep an eye out for an update notification. Samsung has released an urgent software update for the Galaxy S7 edge. The update itself is marked as urgent but the changelog doesn’t reveal much about what this 3.32MB update actually fixes. The changelog only mentions “Edge screen,” it’s likely that Samsung is adding more app support to the Edge screen since lack of app support has been called out in multiple reviews of the new flagship.

It’s unclear what’s wrong with the Edge screen feature on Samsung’s latest flagship that needs to be fixed urgently. Samsung hasn’t provided any more details about this. If you have the Galaxy S7 edge head over to the Settings app and hit the Software Update button to check if your handset has the update. Users may also see an update notification pop up when it goes live in their region.

Galaxy Note 5 is already getting a second Android 6.0.1 update in South Korea

Well, what do you know? While most consumers around the world are waiting for Marshmallow to arrive on their Galaxy Note 5, Samsung is already rolling out a second Android 6.0.1 update for the device in South Korea. All major carriers in the country are rolling out the update, which comes with build number N920LKLU2BPB2.

We’re not aware of what changes or improvements are included in the update, but it likely fixes a few issues that were present on the initial Marshmallow firmware (some users faced severe bugs, including higher battery drain and the Gear VR not working with the phone). Samsung doesn’t usually roll out such updates in quick succession, but it’s certainly nice to see even though the Note 5 is still running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop in a lot of other regions.

The new firmware is available for download from our firmware section. South Korean users should also be seeing a notification for the update in the next couple of days, and they should be able to access it from the Settings » About device » Software updates menu.

Firmware Details:

Galaxy S7 edge accessory review: LED View, Clear View, and keyboard cover

With every new flagship launch, there always come new accessories. This year, MobileFun has provided us with the entire lineup of accessories for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. Most of them are the same as the ones that were launched for the Galaxy S6 lineup, but Samsung has also added a couple of new accessories to go along with its latest Galaxies. Let’s find out what these new accessories offer for buyers of the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge.

Note: We tested the accessories for the Galaxy S7 edge as we didn’t have a Galaxy S7 on hand.

LED View Cover

The LED View cover for the S7 edge is the one I liked the most. It has a leather finish that makes it feel very premium, which isn’t surprising considering how premium Samsung’s new handsets are. Like you would expect from an official case, the LED View cover fits snugly and the cutouts are on point. On the inside, you have two slots for putting in credit/debit cards and money bills.

The cover has a hidden LED display on the upper side at the front. The LED display shows the time and notifications for calls and messages. That’s it – there’s no third-party integration whatsoever, so developers can’t take advantage of the cover’s functionality. There are a couple of settings for the cover, however. Over in the accessory tab on the phone, you can set different images for your contacts, and you can also set what the lid does (basically, choose between turning off the screen when the lid is closed or letting it remain as it is).

When you get a call, you can swipe the part where the LEDs are shown in order to answer or dismiss the call. The same is the case with alarms – alarms are shown with an arrow for turning them off. You can’t snooze them, so that’s a negative aspect.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge come with the Google Play Music app out of the box instead of Samsung’s own music player, which means you miss a great deal of functionality with the LED View cover if you use Google Play Music. With Samsung’s own app (which can be downloaded off the Galaxy Apps store), you get a cool visualization when music is playing, along with the option to turn the volume up or down when the cover is closed. Connecting the device to the charger brings up a neat battery animation and the battery percentage.

The LED View Cover is a very nice case, with a nice feel in the hand while protecting your device from accidental drops and nicks. Samsung could do more on the personalization font, however. For example, it would be great to have the option to design custom images for contacts. You know, like being able to see the name of the person scrolling on the display during an incoming call, which would make it so much better (Samsung, I hope you’re taking notes for the next iteration of the LED view cover).

Head over to MobileFun to buy the LED View Cover for the Samsung Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge.

Clear View Cover

If we talk about smartphones cases that look really good, Samsung’s Clear View cover ranks really high. It’s made of see-through plastic, with a soft leather touch on the inside. Closing the lid protects your phone nicely, and in contrast to last year’s Clear View cover, screen scratches shouldn’t be a problem as the cover comes with a protector placed inside. It continues to be a fingerprint magnet though, just like the phones themselves.

When the lid is closed, you can see notifications in the status bar, though you can’t interact with them. The only thing you see is the clock, and if you play music, you get music controls on the cover. Calls can be accepted and dismissed, and contrary to the LED View cover, you can both dismiss or snooze an alarm. Support for third-party developers is missing here as well.

Battery status and charging animations are also on-board. You can also hop into the settings menu to enable a dual clock for the case, which should come in handy when you’re visiting a place in another time zone.

The Clear View cover is special for the way it looks. It’s got a futuristic feel and covers the phone completely – protection and good design in a single package. The functionality could be better though – you can control music, alarms and calls, but can’t act on notifications when the case is closed. So this is one case you should buy for the looks instead of functionality.

Head over to MobileFun to buy the Clear View Cover for the Samsung Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge.

Keyboard Cover

Samsung surprised us last year with its take on a smartphone keyboard with the keyboard cover for the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+. It wasn’t the most beautiful thing in the world, and the design has remained mostly the same this year. The case has a rubbery feeling that makes it nice to the touch.

The keyboard comes in two parts – you first need to attach a regular case to the back of the phone, and then strap on the keyboard part at the front. The case at the back offers you a grip that can’t be provided by the glass back of the device itself. Once the keyboard is attached, the screen contents move upwards, and the icons become smaller to accommodate everything on the reduced screen estate. When you don’t need the keyboard, you can put it on the back of the phone to stow it away.

The purpose of this keyboard is to let you type faster, but that wasn’t the experience I had. For example, for typing in a period, you have to press and hold the Alt key instead of long pressing the M key on which the period is located. It’s great for those still used to physical phone keyboards, but for those familiar with virtual smartphone cameras, the keyboard cover isn’t a recommended purchase. There’s also the downside that the fingerprint sensor becomes unusable as the keyboard hides the home button.

Grab the keyboard cover for the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge from MobileFun.

Flip Wallet/ Clear cover

The Clear Cover is a minimalist yet stylish cover that protects your phone from scratches on the back. The protection against drops is too minimal, and I reckon the cover will need to be replaced after a single drop to the ground. The back has a protector on this year’s edition of the Clear cover, to protect the phone against scratches from the case itself, which was a huge issue on last year’s official Galaxy S6 cases.

The minimal nature of the Clear cover means you can keep the original design of the phone visible from the front. To protect the screen, you can always pair the cover with a regular screen protector.

The Flip Wallet has the same design as the LED View cover, but with a soft touch finish and no LED display. The cover feels great, and you get credit card/debit card/money holders on the inside. The Flip Wallet is great for protecting the device from both scratches and drops. The cover is a snug fit once you slide the phone in.

Like the other cases, you can get the Flip Wallet/Clear cover from MobileFun. Here’s a shoutout and thank you to the retailer for sending these cases to us for review. Oh, and don’t forget to check out our review of the Galaxy S7 edge before you go out buying the device or its accessories.

T-Mobile confirms buy-one-get-one-free offer for the Galaxy S7

It was reported recently that T-Mobile could soon offer a buy-one-get-one-free promotion for the Galaxy S7 and the carrier has just confirmed that today. Starting tomorrow and for a limited time, customers can pick up the Galaxy S7 for $0 down and the Galaxy S7 edge for $59.99 down and get another unit for free after rebate. T-Mobile customers who have already purchased or will purchase their units during the pre-order period are also eligible to take advantage of this promotion.

AT&T has launched a BOGO free promotion on the Galaxy S7 today as well but T-Mobile’s is a bit different. Instead of providing bill credits like AT&T, Magenta will give back the full retail price of the second device to customers as a prepaid debit card via online debate. Pre-order before March 11 and you’ll also get the Gear VR for free and as an extra incentive T-Mobile will also throw in a year’s worth of Netflix for free.

It runs Android 5.1 Lollipop and comes equipped with a 1.3GHz quad-core Exynos 3475 processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, a microSD card slot, LTE connectivity, and a 2,050 mAh battery.

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge don’t come with Galaxy Labs menu in the US

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge come with an option to disable the app drawer and put all the apps on the home screen, similar to Apple’s iOS. It’s not a normal option, however – it’s an experimental feature available in the Galaxy Labs menu in the device settings. Galaxy Labs is something like Samsung’s version of Android’s developer options menu and is meant to let users try out a few in-development features, possibly before they become a standard part of Samsung’s software.

But it seems carriers in the US aren’t keen on letting users experiment with their Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge, as the units being sold in the country don’t come with the Galaxy Labs menu. It might actually be a good move for the carriers – they don’t want users trying out test features and then calling up customer care to ask for a fix. Of course, we might just be trying to justify something that isn’t justifiable – after all, there was no reason for carriers to hide Download Booster on previous Samsung phones, or for Verizon to remove Smart Manager from the Galaxy S6 and even Samsung Pay from the S7.

But don’t be disappointed about the lack of Galaxy Labs if you’re getting the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge in the US. There are only two options available in Galaxy Labs out of the box, though more options are likely to show up with software updates in the future.

Like the Galaxy S6, some units of Galaxy S7 duo use two different camera sensors

Last year, Samsung used two different camera sensors in the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge, and the company has repeated the same strategy this year with the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. Yes, some Galaxy S7 and S7 edge units are using Samsung’s ISOCELL camera sensor, while others are using Sony’s IMX260 sensor.

Earlier today, Samsung made an official announcement of its new 1/2.5-inch 12.3-megapixel ISOCELL camera sensor (S5K2L1). An XDA user has posted an image of his Galaxy S7 edge (SM-G935F), which shows the device using Samsung’s sensor instead of Sony’s IMX260. This confirms that the company is using two different sensors in its latest flagship smartphones.

There’s negligible difference between these sensors regarding on-paper specifications. Both are 1/2.5-inch sensors with a resolution of 12.3 megapixels, dual-pixel phase-detection autofocus, and an individual pixel size of 1.4µm. Right now, we don’t know if there’s any difference between the final image quality from these sensors, but we’ll let you know once we get our hands on different units.

Details on Samsung’s new Bluetooth C-Pen stylus crop up online

Late last year, we exclusively reported that Samsung is working on a new Bluetooth-enabled C Pen stylus. At the time we didn’t have any information on the stylus except for its model number (EJ-UW700), but we now have all the details thanks to a retailer listing for the C-Pen. According to the listing, the new C-Pen is for the Windows-powered Galaxy Tab Pro S and uses Microsoft’s DirectInk platform, which was introduced with Windows 10 for touch input using styluses.

The C-Pen connects via Bluetooth 4.0 LE, comes with back and eraser buttons, and has 1,024 levels of pressure. That’s half of the pressure level sensitivity offered by the S Pen on latest Note devices, but it should still allow for considerably precise input. Battery life is quoted at 162 hours, an impressive figure that will vary depending on how much the C-Pen is used. The stylus is priced at €59.90, which is a bit higher than what Samsung accessories usually cost but falls in line with the high price tag that accompanies the Galaxy Tab Pro S.

Being a regular stylus, the C-Pen should be compatible with regular smartphones and tablets as well. It’s not yet available for purchase, but that is likely to change in the coming weeks.

Thanks, J Lee!

Verizon has removed Samsung Pay app from the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge

Regardless of the fact that it’s the largest mobile carrier in the United States, Verizon was the last carrier to offer support for Samsung Pay in 2015. Carrier support is absolutely required for Samsung Pay otherwise the mobile payment service won’t work. Verizon customers who are looking forward to receiving their Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge should keep in mind that they won’t be able to make payments on the go as the carrier has removed the Samsung Pay app from its units.

There doesn’t appear to be any good reason why Verizon has removed the Samsung Pay app from the latest flagship smartphones despite the fact that it’s supporting the service on the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge. Trying to install the app from the Play Store doesn’t seem to work as well, though, it appears that it’s possible to sideload the app on Verizon’s Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge but whether the service will work at a payment terminal or not remains to be seen. There’s no official word as yet from Verizon explaining why it has chosen to remove the Samsung Pay app from the latest flagships or when users can expect to get the app on their handsets.
