Samsung Galaxy S11e 5G will have 25W fast charging

Many had expected Samsung to leave its nearly-half-a-decade-old 15W fast charging tech behind with the Galaxy S10 series, but the company decided not to do so. Only the Galaxy S10 5G got faster charging, and many who purchased any of the three standard LTE Galaxy S10 models were quite vocal with their complaints about that fact.

To be fair, for the Galaxy S10e and Galaxy S10, 15W charging is more than enough, as the two phones feature 3,100 mAh and 3400 mAh batteries respectively, but it was still disappointing to see Samsung release yet another flagship with charging speeds that were outmatched by the competition. Thankfully, both the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ come with support for 25W super fast charging as standard, and the same is expected on the Galaxy S11 series.

And for those who needed it, confirmation that the entire Galaxy S11 lineup will support 25W charging has arrived today with a certification for the 5G variant of the Galaxy S11e (model number SM-G9810) in China. Just two weeks ago, presence of 25W charging was also confirmed for the Galaxy S11 5G through the same certification process. Battery sizes for these devices have already been revealed as well: at least 3,800 mAh on the S11e and 4,300 mAh on the S11.

The Galaxy S11+, meanwhile, is going to have a 5,000 mAh battery, the biggest yet on any flagship Galaxy smartphone. And while there isn’t any official information to support the speculation, we can safely assume that the S11+ will also support 45W fast charging. As it did with the Note 10+, Samsung probably will choose to make the 45W charger an optional accessory for S11+ buyers, and it will hopefully make sure that the 45W charging is actually available everywhere from day one this time around.

Exclusive: This is the Galaxy A51 and it’s coming December 12

There has been a lot of anticipation for the Galaxy A51. It’s the successor to the very popular Galaxy A50 and if the rumors are to be believed, it’s going to bring some meaningful improvements. You don’t have to wonder anymore about what this device is going to bring to the table.

Our highly credible sources have relayed almost everything there is to know about the Galaxy A51. We can also share a couple of press renders of the device itself. Samsung will be unveiling the Galaxy A51 in the near future.

Here’s what the Galaxy A51 is going to look like

As you can see in these press renders, the Galaxy A51 has a centered punch hole for the front camera much like the Galaxy Note 10. This is a design element that we’ll be seeing a lot of on Samsung’s Galaxy A 2020 series. It retains the 3D Glasstic build that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy A series this year. However, the look has been refreshed with pastel shade pattern combinations.

The new L-shaped camera setup at the back is a noticeable design change as well. All of the physical buttons are on the right side of the frame, which is something we expect Samsung to do for the Galaxy S11 as well. It measures 158.5 x 73.6 x 7.9mm and weighs 172g. The Galaxy A51 will be available in Prism Crush White, Black, Pink and Blue colors.

To definitively put to rest the speculation about the Galaxy A51 specs, we can now confirm the handset’s core specifications. As expected, it will feature an Exynos 9611 processor under the hood with 4/6GB RAM in the 64/128GB variants respectively. MicroSD expansion is possible up to 512GB.

It has a 6.5-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with a center punch hole for the 32-megapixel f/2.2 front camera. There’s also an in-display fingerprint sensor. A 4,000mAh battery will be keeping the lights on with support for 15W fast charging.

Galaxy A51 camera will be the star of the show

The defining feature of the Galaxy A51 is its new camera. As we have highlighted before, it’s going to be Samsung’s most affordable handset with a quad camera setup. There’s a 48-megapixel f/2.0 primary sensor coupled with a 12-megapixel ultrawide f/2.2 and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. What about the fourth camera? As we had exclusively confirmed, the Galaxy A51 will come with a 5-megapixel f/2.4 Macro camera.

The Macro lens will be one of the biggest talking points about the Galaxy A51. Much like a telephoto lens, a Macro lens allows you to get close to the subject you’re capturing. Since they have a minimum shorter focusing distance, you can get closer to a subject than you would with a telephoto lens without losing focus. Simply put, you’ll get much better close-ups. It will also result in a more distinctive blur effect that’s better than software-based bokeh.

Samsung Vietnam recently posted a video online that revealed that a new Galaxy A handset will be unveiled on December 12. We can now confirm that it will indeed be the Galaxy A51. There was the expectation that perhaps we may also get to see another new device, like the Galaxy A71. However, we’re told that the A71 and a couple of other upcoming models won’t be unveiled until next year. In case that feels awfully long, keep in mind that the “next year” is merely three weeks away.

What do you think of the Galaxy A51? Has it shaped up to be a device you’d spend your money on? Let us know in the comments below.

Galaxy Note 10 Plus getting Frozen 2 limited-time accessories in Taiwan

Samsung Taiwan just took the wraps off a few brand new Frozen 2-themed accessories for the Galaxy Note 10+. They consist of two back covers for the flagship phone and one case for the Galaxy Buds, the latter of which features the animated snowman, Olaf.

The Frozen 2 ‘Snow Treasure’ and ‘Journey’ covers have a similar shape but they come with different images printed on the back. The covers are also coupled with Frozen 2 themes featuring icon packs, AODs, wallpaper and so on.

Samsung launches Frozen 2 Galaxy Note 10+ accessories

What’s cool about these Frozen 2 covers is that they have an NFC chip embedded in them. Therefore, your phone will download appropriate Frozen 2 themes complete with icon packs, wallpapers, and AODs as soon as you attach one of the covers to your handset.

Samsung Taiwan is selling the Frozen 2 Galaxy Note 10+ accessories at the Samsung Mall and Experience Center. The Snow Treasure and Journey cases cost NT$ 1,490 ($49) each, while the protective case for the Galaxy Buds costs NT$ 890 ($30).

It’s difficult to tell with certainty, but the Frozen 2 Galaxy Note 10+ accessories are seemingly available only for a limited time, presumably throughout the holiday shopping season. Frozen 2, the animated film, debuted last month, and with the end of the year drawing near, it seems like it’s the perfect time to launch these limited edition accessories. It’s unclear if they’ll release elsewhere aside from Taiwan, but we’ll keep you posted if we find out more.

Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ in Aura Red/Aura Blue out in Vietnam

Samsung is launching the Aura Red and Aura Blue versions of the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ in Vietnam today, December 6. The former color option was initially launched only in a handful of markets. The latter, Aura Blue, was originally exclusive to the USA and Best Buy, although we got our first clues that it might be introduced to other markets outside of the US several months ago.

Although the two new colors are available in Vietnam starting today, they still have an exclusivity whiff about them as they will be sold in limited quantities. Samsung didn’t reveal exactly how many Aura Blue and Aura Red units will be in stock, but it sounds like this release was prompted by the holiday shopping season so the chance of being able to buy one next month looks slim.

Same great specs wrapped in different flavors

The Aura Red Galaxy Note 10 and Aura Blue Galaxy Note 10+ are very much unchanged in terms of specifications. No reason to reiterate these details here, but you can check our reviews for the Note 10 and Note 10+ if you want to refresh your memory or you’re looking for a more in-depth look at these devices.

Both of them are great flagships, but whether you prefer the smaller variant over the larger one and vice versa is up to you. Even more so now when there’s a choice between two mutually-exclusive colors.

Samsung Vietnam is selling the Aura Red Galaxy Note 10 for VND 22,990,000 ($992). The Aura Blue Galaxy Note 10+ carries a VND 26,990,000 ($1,164) price tag, so not much has changed in terms of pricing either.

More Galaxy devices start receiving December security patch

Less than a week into December, Samsung is frantically releasing the December 2019 security patch to more and more devices. It has now added the Galaxy A7 (2017), A7 (2018), J7 Max/On Max, Galaxy J6+, and the Tab Active2 to this growing list. It’s encouraging to see the Korean company release the latest security update to its old non-flagship models as well.

Coming to regional availability, the update for the Galaxy A7 (2017) is currently available in Russia and Uzbekistan, while the 2018 variant is receiving it in Spain. The Galaxy J7 Max and Tab Active2, meanwhile, are getting the same update in India and Trinidad and Tobago, respectively. In contrast to these devices, the Galaxy J6+ is seeing a much wider December patch rollout with the update currently reaching users in the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Romania, Ireland, Portugal, and a few other markets. However, it appears the J6+ update is limited to the Vodafone variant in most of these markets.

Going by Samsung’s monthly security bulletin, the December 2019 SMR (Security Maintenance Release) patches six critical and more than two dozen high and moderate-risk Android OS vulnerabilities, along with 13 Samsung-specific vulnerabilities. Considering these are all relatively old budget or mid-range devices, the update is unlikely to include any new features. If you come across any user-facing changes in the release, do let us know in the comments section.

Since Samsung rolls out updates in stages, not all eligible devices may receive the OTA update automatically at once. However, you can manually check and download the update by going into Settings and tapping the Download updates manually option under the Software Update menu. Alternatively, you can also consider downloading the latest firmware for your device from our database and manually flash it. You can find all the firmware for the Galaxy (2017) here, A7 (2018) here, J7 Max/On Max here, Galaxy J6+ here, and the Tab Active2 here.

One UI 2.0 feature focus: Dark/Night mode darkens wallpaper as well

Samsung beat everyone to the punch by introducing a system-wide Night mode to its software with Android Pie, a year before something similar would become a part of the core Android OS. With Android 10, Samsung has renamed Night mode to Dark mode, which is what Google calls it on stock Android, and Samsung has also made a very sensible addition to the feature: Dark mode on Android 10 and One UI 2.0 can be made to darken the wallpaper as well.

If you have used Night mode extensively on a Galaxy S10 or another Galaxy device running Android Pie, you will realize why the option to darken the wallpaper is important. While the system-wide dark interface makes things easy on the eyes at night, it doesn’t help when you go to the home screen and you have a bright wallpaper active. On Android 10, that is no longer an issue.

If you want, you can make your home screen wallpaper darker when Dark mode is enabled. Don’t worry, Samsung doesn’t go overboard here, as you can see in the picture above (the left picture has the wallpaper darkened, the right one has the option turned off). The brightness of the wallpaper is reduced only to a slight extent, so you can still enjoy the wallpaper while preventing your eyes from getting blinded when using the phone in the dark.

You can set whether Dark mode darkens the wallpaper by opening the Settings app, tapping Display, tapping Dark mode, then toggling the Apply to wallpaper option. You can also schedule the times at which Dark mode should be enabled or disabled from the same menu, in addition to turning it off and on completely (which can also be done via the Dark mode toggle in the notification shade).

For more on what One UI 2.0 brings to the Galaxy S10 and other Galaxy devices, look forward to our One UI 2.0 feature focus articles in which we will be taking a deep dive into some of the new features.

Galaxy M30 software update brings AR Doodle camera feature

Samsung has released a software update for the Galaxy M30s that adds the AR Doodle camera feature to the company’s budget champion. AR Doodle debuted on the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ and later came to the Galaxy S10 series and the Galaxy Fold along with many other Galaxy Note 10 camera features. It is also available out of the box on some non-flagship devices that run One UI 1.5, like the Galaxy A50s, and while the M30s also ships with One UI 1.5, AR Doodle wasn’t part of the package until today.

AR Doodle is a video recording feature that lets you doodle on top of whatever it is you record with the phone’s camera in real-time and then tracks the position of those drawings as you pan the camera around. For example, if you draw a mustache on a person’s face when recording the video, the mustache will only show up in the video when that person is in the frame and disappear when you pan away. It works with both the front and rear cameras and can be accessed by switching to the Video mode and tapping the AR Doodle icon at the top right (see the camera screenshot in the image below).

The Galaxy M30s update is rolling out in India and bundles the November 2019 security patch. In addition to AR Doodle, the update adds “a new Samsung Shop function”, but it’s unclear what the function is as the changelog doesn’t go into details. The stability of the camera has been improved as well. You can download the update over the air by opening the Settings app on your phone, selecting Software update, and tapping Download and install. Alternatively, you can download the latest firmware from our firmware archive and install it on the phone using a Windows PC.

Here is the official Galaxy S10 Android 10 user manual

It has been a week since the stable Android 10 update started rolling out for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ owners, and Samsung has been making the update available in more and more countries with each passing day. Now, the company has updated the Galaxy S10 user manual (PDF) with sections about the changes and new functionality introduced with Android 10 and One UI 2.0.

As is usually the case, the updated user manual doesn’t really give you a proper idea of the new functionality. For example, there’s no mention of the built-in screen recorder, which is one of the most useful features that comes bundled with One UI 2.0. But that’s okay, because you can see all the major One UI 2.0 features in action in the video below and read about them in detail in our One UI 2.0 feature focus series of articles. We also have a detailed side-by-side comparison of all the improvements and changes it brings to the user interface over One UI 1.1/1.5.

Fourth Galaxy Note 10 Android 10 beta update rolling out now

Samsung has released the fourth Android 10 beta update for the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+. The update seems to be rolling out in all markets where the Note 10 One UI 2.0 beta program was launched, so you should be able to download it on your device from the Settings » Software update menu. The update’s size is nearly 550 MB, but the list of bug fixes is thankfully not as big as it was with the third beta that was released a week ago.

According to the changelog, the update fixes a bug that prevented the phone from vibrating when the S Pen is removed, issues with apps failing to perform normally despite having all permissions allowed, disappearing app icons, and device reboots when playing music, in addition to a few others. It also fixes an issue that made the save/cancel option disappear when jotting down memos with the Screen off memo feature. The software version for the newest beta is G97**XXU1ZSL4 and it bundles the December 2019 security patch.

There’s no word on when Samsung will have the Galaxy Note 10’s stable Android 10 update ready. The company is currently claiming a January release of the update in most markets, but it’s possible the Note 10’s update will start rolling out much earlier like the stable update for the Galaxy S10 series.

Leaked Galaxy A71 render gives a glimpse of its design

Samsung is due to unveil the Galaxy A 2020 series in the near future. There will be models ranging from the Galaxy A11 all the way up to the Galaxy A91. They won’t all be unveiled at the same time, though.

The Galaxy A71 will be one of the devices in this new series. A purported press render of the device has now leaked online. It provides a glimpse of the device’s design.

Galaxy A71 render shows it’s going to rock a punch hole

Unofficial CAD renders of the Galaxy A71 already surfaced two weeks ago. It showed us that the device will have a punch hole display for the front camera like the Galaxy Note 10. A few of Samsung’s new Galaxy A handsets are expected to have this design feature. The CAD renders also showed that there’s going to be a new L-shaped camera array at the back.

The purported press render that has been leaked by @evleaks only shows the front of the device. This doubles down on the possibility of this device having a punch hole display. There’s no render for the back as yet but it might not be long before one surfaces.

The Galaxy A71 is expected to feature a Snapdragon 675 processor with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. If this is accurate, it will share the same specs with the Galaxy A70, including the same 6.7-inch display and 4,500mAh battery. The primary changes will be in the design and camera departments. It does appear that Samsung is developing a 5G variant of this device for the Chinese market.

It’s unlikely that we’ll see the Galaxy A71 at the December 12 announcement for Galaxy A 2020 devices in Vietnam. What we do know is that this is one of the Galaxy A series handsets that will eventually be released in Europe as well.

Samsung Galaxy A11 benchmark reveals an old Snapdragon chipset

More is being revealed about the Galaxy A11 today thanks to a benchmark listing for the upcoming entry-level Galaxy A series smartphone. And it seems when it comes to the processing power, the Galaxy A11 will have to make do with an older chipset compared to its predecessor. According to the benchmark, the A11 will have the Snapdragon 625/626 under the hood, along with 2GB of RAM.

The Galaxy A10 is powered by the Exynos 7884, which is a more powerful chip on paper as two of its eight cores are high-performance Cortex-A73 cores. The Snapdragon 625/626 features eight Cortex-A53 cores, so it’s focused purely at efficiency rather than raw processing power. However, real-world performance is what matters at the end of the day, and we’ve often seen Qualcomm’s technically lesser chips outperforming Samsung’s Exynos offerings, so we will reserve judgement until the Galaxy A11 goes official and we’ve had the chance to test it out.

The Galaxy A11 will have 2GB of RAM, the same as the base variant of the Galaxy A10. As we had reported last month, the handset will feature 32GB of internal storage and run Android 10 out of the box, with the latter confirmed by the benchmark listing. Color options for the device will include black and white, and it’s likely to first go on sale in markets in Africa and Asia before making its way to some European markets.

Galaxy Note 10 Lite to have a bigger battery than the Galaxy Note 10+

While you would expect the next Galaxy S flagship to have larger batteries than the phone it will succeed (something that’s happening next year as well), what you wouldn’t expect is to see spin-offs of an existing flagship getting a bigger battery than that flagship. However, that is going to be the case for the Galaxy S10 Lite, which is going to be powered by a 4,500 mAh battery, and it looks like the same will be true for the Galaxy Note 10 Lite.

A photo of a battery (model number EB-BN770ABY) that should belong to the Note 10 Lite has been published by the SafetyKorea certification database. While the image isn’t very sharp, it is easy to make out the battery’s capacity. It’s a 4,500 mAh cell like the one inside the Galaxy S10 Lite, so despite the Note 10 Lite’s older chipset (an Exynos 9810), battery endurance shouldn’t be a concern on the device.

It remains to be seen if the Note 10 Lite will also support 45W fast charging like the Galaxy S10 Lite. It would certainly make sense, considering the Galaxy Note 10+ supports 45W charging despite having a battery that’s 200 mAh smaller than its upcoming Lite cousin. Of course, the Note 10+ is a flagship phone so it’s not exactly a one-to-one comparison, but if a mid-ranger like the Galaxy A91 can sport those crazy charging speeds, we don’t see why it wouldn’t be a feature on the Galaxy Note 10 Lite as well.
