Three Samsung patents show foldable smartphone and future Galaxy designs

The Galaxy X, once believed to be a phone that existed only in the laboratory, lives and has an announcement and release date timeframe. New patents surfacing this week show Samsung’s continued development of the foldable smartphone, the Korean giant’s “next big thing,” as well as future Galaxy smartphone design.

The first patent points to a fold-out design for the upcoming foldable smartphone. A hinge in-between both displays will allow for the bending and flexing motion of the device. We’ve seen this hinge before in a prototype, and it seems as though Samsung is sticking to its plans without much deviation. Rumors say that Samsung intends to use a more durable glass than Corning’s Gorilla Glass for the device’s display; flexible glass will become the mandate here with flexible devices.

The next two patents refer to future Galaxy smartphone design. Patently Mobile assumes that these new smartphone designs may refer to Galaxy S models, considering that one diagram shows a phone that has curved edges on the front like a Galaxy S7 edge but looks like a flat Galaxy S5 Neo on the back – with a speaker that is reminiscent of the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 speaker design. In fact, the last patent showcases a diagram that appears to be a Galaxy Note 4/Note Edge design with curved edges on both sides.

The Galaxy S7 edge/S5 Neo-esque nature of the second patent, coupled with a Galaxy Note 4-like design in the third patent, implies that Samsung may be working on bringing some of its new design language to more budget-friendly series. Could Samsung have a budget-friendly Note in the future that is a true Galaxy Note Edge with dual-curved edges? It certainly seems plausible, though with Samsung, patents are never guarantees.

And, for those who may find it interesting, it seems as though the trademark Samsung home button and headphone jack remain on these models, hinting at budget-friendly devices. One strong rumor says that Samsung is preparing to abandon the long-held home button in favor of a virtual home button in the upcoming Galaxy S8 and that the headphone jack could be ditched as well. If so, then these are new patents for more budget-friendly devices in Samsung’s lineup.

We know little else for now, but the budget-friendly experience may take an interesting turn in 2017, indeed.

Deal: Buy a Galaxy S7 edge and get free Gear Fit 2

At the start of a new year there is always a common theme among people: get fit. Samsung wants to help with that by offering customers a free Gear Fit 2 with the purchase of a Galaxy S7 edge. To take advantage of this promotion, customers must purchase a Galaxy S7 edge between now and January 15th and submit a claim via Samsung Promotions by January 22nd. The wearable, which is normally priced at $129.99, will take approximately 4-6 weeks to be mailed out once claim is submitted. If buying directly from the Samsung store, no claim needs to be submitted. Just add the free Gear Fit 2 to your cart with the Galaxy S7 edge and checkout.

This deal is also being offered by all four major US carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint). Additionally, Best Buy is offering the same deal and is sweetening the pot a bit by taking $150 off the retail price of the phone when activating on a monthly installment plan through Verizon, AT&T or Sprint. The retail giant also claims the deal can be had with the purchase of a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Active, but refers customers to submit claim on the Samsung Promotions page which only mentions the Galaxy S7 edge as part of the deal.

Gear S3 India launch confirmed for January 10

We exclusively reported last month that Samsung was going to launch the Gear S3 in India come January 2017. The smartwatch is already out in most major markets including but not limited to the United States, South Korea and China. Samsung didn’t really say anything about the Gear S3 India launch last year but it has now sent out invites to a press event on January 10 in India where it’s going to launch the Gear S3.

The Gear S3 is certainly the best smartwatch that Samsung has ever made. Consumer response has been good in the markets where the Gear S3 has already been released and Samsung would be expecting a similar response in India.

The press invite drops a subtle hint that the event is going to be all about the Gear S3 even if it doesn’t outright say it. Samsung is going to launch both the Gear S3 classic and the Gear S3 frontier in India. Pricing and availability information will obviously be confirmed in the coming week. If you’ve been thinking about picking on up, you should really check out our reviews of the Gear S3 classic and the Gear S3 frontier.

Galaxy Tab S3 release draws near as it receives Bluetooth certification

We told you several months ago that Samsung has a new flagship Android-powered tablet in the pipeline that’s going to be out in the near future. Recent developments suggest that the Galaxy Tab S3 release might just be around the corner. Earlier this week the LTE model of this tablet received its Wi-Fi certification and not too long ago it also got its Bluetooth certification.

Details about the specs of the LTE Galaxy Tab S3 (SM-T825) are slim at this point in time but one should expect flagship-level specifications including but not limited to the latest processor, a big chunk of RAM and just overall improved internals.

Samsung didn’t talk about a new tablet at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 this week which is why there’s all the more reason to believe that it’s going to unveil the Galaxy Tab S3 at the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona next month. We exclusively reported a few months back that the Galaxy Tab S3 will be released in the first quarter of the new year and that’s certainly how things are falling in line at this point in time.

Samsung finally releases Gear S iOS app for compatibility with iPhones

Samsung first sent out a press release earlier this week confirming that it had released the Gear S app which brings iPhone compatibility to the Gear S3, the Gear S2 and the Gear Fit 2. However, the company later reached out to us and said that the app hadn’t gone live and that it would be out soon. Samsung has finally released the Gear S iOS app now which means that anyone who owns the aforementioned Gear devices can now use them with an iPhone.

The company first promised iOS support for the Gear S2 back in late 2015. It actually said that iOS support would arrive early 2016 but that didn’t happen. Samsung released the app in beta a few months ago and is now finally releasing it to the public.

The Gear S3, Gear S3 and Gear Fit 2 are compatible with the iPhone 5 and later models running iOS 9.0 above. Users should keep in mind that services and features of Samsung Gear devices may be limited on certain iOS devices. The Gear S iOS app is live now and available for download free from the App Store.
