Samsung’s OLED panels to face competition from China’s Everdisplay

Samsung Display makes the best OLED panels in the world for smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and laptops. The company is now facing some competition from rival Chinese firms like BOE in the smartphone space and Everdisplay Optronics in the laptop and tablet segments.

According to a new report, Samsung Display is facing direct competition from China’s Everdisplay Optronics in supplying OLED panels for Huawei’s notebooks and tablet PCs. Earlier, the South Korean firm was providing OLED panels for Huawei’s laptops and tablets, but those orders have reportedly been switched to Everdisplay Optronics.

Everdisplay Optronics is supplying 11-inch displays to BBK Electronics, and 11.5-inch and 12.6-inch (QHD) OLED screens for Huawei’s tablets. The Chinese firm has also started supplying 15.6-inch 4K OLED panels for Dell’s and HP’s premium laptops. Until now, Samsung was the de-facto OLED panel supplier for large-screen, non-smartphone devices. However, it now has competition from Everdisplay.

Last year, Samsung Display sold 4 million OLED panels for laptops and tablets, but 3 million of those units were used in Samsung’s devices. Right now, only 1.3 percent of the laptops sold worldwide have OLED screens, but that market share will rise from next year.

Galaxy A51 5G, Galaxy A71 5G gain support for Google Play Services for AR

Samsung recently unveiled two new mid-range 5G smartphones, the Galaxy A51 5G and the Galaxy A71 5G, for the American market. Both phones bring stylish design, large OLED screens, quad-camera setups, and 5G connectivity to the mid-range price segment. Now, the phones have received support for Google Play Services for AR.

Compatibility with Google Play Services for AR (earlier Google ARCore) means that you can run augmented reality (AR) based apps and games on an Android device. To make such apps work properly, Google has to work with the brand to create a custom calibration profile for each phone. Those who buy the Galaxy A51 5G or the Galaxy A71 5G can use Google’s Measure app and Pokémon GO in AR+ mode.

Galaxy A51 5G, A71 5G Features: A recap

The Galaxy A51 5G features a 6.5-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-O display, 48MP+12MP+5MP+5MP quad-camera setup, 32MP selfie camera, Exynos 980 processor, 6GB/8GB RAM, 128GB internal storage, microSD card slot, under-display optical fingerprint reader, sub-6GHz 5G connectivity, 4500mAh battery, and 15W fast charging.

The Galaxy A71 5G has an even larger, 6.7-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display, under-display fingerprint reader, 64MP+12MP+5MP+5MP rear-facing quad-camera, and a 32MP front-facing snapper. The phone has Exynos 980 chipset, 6GB or 8GB RAM, 128GB internal storage, a microSD card slot, 5G, and a 4500mAh battery with 25W fast charging.

Samsung developing industry’s first 160-layer NAND flash memory chips

Samsung is reportedly close to finishing the development of the industry’s first 160-layer NAND flash memory chips. The South Korean semiconductor giant is using its “super-gap” strategy to develop the company’s seventh-generation NAND flash memory chips, giving the company an upper hand over its rivals.

The company is using the double-stack technology to create 160 layers in its V-NAND (also known as 3D NAND) flash memory chips. As it is understood, a higher number of layers in a NAND flash chip means higher storage capacity. Earlier, the highest number of layers used in memory chips was 128, and Samsung is now close to the production of 160-layer chips.

Samsung now has an upper hand over its rivals SK Hynix and YMTC

Last year, Samsung and SK Hynix started the mass production of 128-layer 3D NAND flash memory chips. Chinese firm Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) recently announced that it would be producing 128-layer memory chips to compete with Samsung. However, no other firm has announced the development of 160-layer memory chips yet, which makes Samsung the first company in the world.

This achievement is being seen as an important stepping stone for Samsung’s memory chip business as it is trying to widen the gap from its rival firms. The South Korean electronics giant earned $16.5 billion from the global NAND flash market in 2020, acquiring a market share of 35.9 percent, which is the highest in the semiconductor industry.

Despite the current COVID-19 situation and hardships faced by the company in the manufacturing of products, Samsung is not backing down on investments in its semiconductor business. Afterall, its memory chip business is what saved the company from reporting huge profit drops in Q1 2020.

Galaxy S10 Lite to release in USA tomorrow, April 17

Samsung is going to release the Galaxy S10 Lite in the USA tomorrow, April 17. The smartphone will be available for purchase from Samsung’s e-shop, Best Buy, and Amazon. It will go on sale for $650, which is the expected price tag given that the phone debuted for €650 in Europe roughly three months ago.

Even so, the handset might be a tough sell since Samsung is offering the Galaxy S10+ for $699 in the USA at the time of writing. Then again, the Galaxy S10 Lite is not a slouch either, despite the moniker.

48MP main and 32MP selfie cameras are part of the package

The Galaxy S10 Lite features a Snapdragon 855 chipset (same as the regular S10 models), 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage, and should ship with 8GB of RAM in the USA. But these similarities aside, the Galaxy S10 Lite departs itself from the rest of the 2019 flagship series with a new camera setup comprising a 48MP main sensor with super steady OIS, a 12MP ultra-wide, and a 5MP macro shooter, the latter of which does have limited use. Learn more in our Galaxy S10 Lite review.

Selfie enthusiasts will work with a 32MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, and other characteristics include a 4,500mAh battery which delivers fantastic autonomy on a single charge. It also benefits from 45W fast charging – a considerable step-up from the 15W limit of the 2019 models.

The Galaxy S10 Lite will have better software support than the 2019 lineup

The phone has an in-display fingerprint sensor, Bluetooth 5 connectivity, and a USB-C connector, but lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack. Prospective buyers should also consider that the phone ships with Android 10 out of the box, meaning that it’s eligible for two major OS updates while the rest of the S10 lineup has only one left. In Europe, the phone already got the One UI 2.1 update, but it will presumably ship with One UI 2.0 in the USA and receive the newer version over-the-air later down the line.

Samsung is reportedly planning to offer discounts of up to $250 on the $650 price tag with trade-in. Are you planning to buy the Galaxy S10 Lite, with or without the trade-in deal? Let us know in the comments.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite US price and release confirmed

Countless leaks had revealed over the past few weeks that Samsung was going to launch a new mid-range tablet in the near future. The company finally unveiled the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite today. Despite sharing its moniker with the flagship Galaxy Tab S6, the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is a solid mid-ranger with a price tag to match.

Samsung today confirmed when the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is going to be available in the United States. It has also confirmed how much this new mid-range tablet is going to cost.

Galaxy Tab S6 Lite US price

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite features a 10.4-inch TFT LCD display with an Exynos 9611 processor under the hood. The chip is paired with 4GB of RAM and comes with 64GB of storage. Customers will be able to purchase a 128GB model if they so desire.

It does retain the same 7,040mAh battery of the flagship Galaxy Tab S6 and also comes with a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, something that’s missing on the top-tier model. It comes with an 8-megapixel rear and a 5-megapixel front camera in addition to two AKG-tuned speakers with Dolby Atmos. The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite comes with Android 10 out of the box with One UI 2.0.

Despite it being a mid-range tablet, Samsung is shipping a redesigned S Pen in the box, thus allowing customers to get much more done on the tablet. Samsung confirmed today that the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is going to be released in the United States in Q2 (this quarter), it’s yet to provide a confirmed release date. It did confirm that the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite price will start at $349.99.

Galaxy Tab S6 Lite versus Galaxy Tab S6 spec/price throwdown

Now that Samsung has finally unveiled the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite, we can take a closer look at how this budget-friendlier solution compares to the company’s top-tier tablet, the Galaxy Tab S6 (hit the link for our review). There are quite a few differences to consider, from hardware to software, as well as pricing, so let’s get down to it.

AMOLED versus TFT LCD

Both tablets have a similarly-sized display with only a 0.1-inch discrepancy between them, but they are otherwise quite different. While the Galaxy Tab S6 has a Super AMOLED 2560 by 1600 display, the Lite model packs a TFT LCD screen instead, with a pixel count of 2000 by 1200.

Samsung’s Super AMOLED panels are renowned for their vibrant colors and deep blacks, so an LCD panel seldom looks as good in the eyes of a Galaxy fan. The Tab S6 was also the company’s first tablet to boast HDR10+ capabilities, while the Tab S6 Lite lacks this certification.

And while we’re at it, all of this essentially means that the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite will deliver a poorer display experience even compared to the Galaxy Tab S5e. The choice of TFT LCD is certainly one of the S6 Lite’s weaker points.

Design

Although the Galaxy Tab S6 costs considerably more than the Tab S6 Lite, the exterior design is strikingly similar between the two. The high-end model has a special slot for the S Pen on the back panel and a dual-camera setup, but other than that, you’d be hard-pressed to notice a difference between it and the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite.

Despite the Tab S6 Lite’s lower price tag, the tablet has relatively thin bezels similar to the S6. And while it’s not as thin as the Tab S6 which measures an incredible 5.7mm, the more affordable model still looks very stylish with a 7mm profile.

S Pen

Both the Galaxy Tab S6 and Tab S6 Lite have an S Pen, but the writing tool is fundamentally different from one model to the other. The high-end Tab S6′ S Pen is Bluetooth-enabled and benefits from Air Actions much like the Galaxy Note 10.

On the other hand, while the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite S Pen has been redesigned for a more comfortable grip, it follows a more traditional hardware setup whereby it doesn’t require an internal battery or Bluetooth connectivity. This means that you won’t take advantage of Air Gestures, albeit, you might feel like this feature falls more on the gimmicky side anyway.

Internal hardware and cameras

The Galaxy Tab S6 is the more powerful tablet of the two, no question about it. It sports a Snapdragon 855 SoC paired with 6GB or 8GB of RAM, while the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite has an Exynos 9611 chipset and 4GB of RAM. Similarly, the Tab S6 Lite base model has 64GB of storage with a 128GB option, while the Tab S6 is available with 128GB/256GB of memory.

Both tablets take advantage of the same connectivity features, however, the Galaxy Tab S6 has an in-display fingerprint sensor while the Tab S6 Lite lacks biometric authentication altogether. On the bright side, the budget model includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, giving you a lot more possibilities in terms of external speakers and headphones.

Battery life comparisons between these two models will be very interesting, considering each model relies on a 7,040mAh battery and have very different display technologies and chipsets. The Snapdragon 855 is a high-end chip, while the Exynos 9611 is a mid-range solution.

Camera-wise, the Galaxy Tab S6 is the clear winner here. It has a 13MP wide sensor along with a 5MP ultrawide, and an 8MP front-facing shooter. The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite makes do with an 8MP wide main camera and a 5MP front-facing unit.

Software

Both tablets ship with Samsung’s S Pen suite of apps for productivity, but one big advantage of owning the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite instead of the high-end model is that it will benefit from an additional major Android OS update.

The Tab S6 Lite ships with Android 10 out of the box, while the high-end Tab S6 shipped with Android 9 and was later upgraded to the newer OS version.

Given Samsung’s firmware update policy, the Galaxy Tab S6 will stop getting new OS updates before the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite. The former will only get Android 11, while the Tab S6 Lite should technically be guaranteed to receive Android 11 and Android 12.

Price

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is obviously the cheaper choice from the two, and the gap is not insignificant. While the Tab S6 Lite Wi-Fi/LTE costs €379/€439, the high-end Tab S6 will set you back €699/€779. Granted, you will get more tablet for your money, but Samsung very clearly placed the Tab S6 Lite in its own price range.

Which one of these tablets do you think is a better choice for the money? Do you plan on buying the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite? Are you a Tab S6 owner? Share your thoughts in the comment section.

Galaxy Tab S6 Lite detailed by Samsung, available for pre-order in Europe

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is now really official. Although the tablet was first quietly unveiled a couple of days ago by Samsung Indonesia, the product page has since been removed from the Indonesian portal. But after all the hype, Samsung has now issued an official press release for the device, and the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is already available for pre-order in the Netherlands.

Samsung talks more about the new S Pen

According to Samsung, the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite features a new S Pen with a refreshed design for a comfortable grip. It weighs only 7.03 grams and claims improved latency.

As you may have already been aware, the optional book cover case has an S Pen holder carved in the hinge. What we’ve also learned is that the S Pen can be attached magnetically to the side of the tablet when not using the book cover.

Samsung’s new multimedia-focused tablet

While the inclusion of the S Pen and corresponding apps categorize this tablet as a productivity-friendly device, Samsung is also focusing on its multimedia-consumption capabilities.

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is packed with clever, helpful and entertaining features including Dolby Atmos 3D surround sound, dual AKG speakers, and the usual 4 months of YouTube Premium and Spotify for free.

The new tablet also has a 3.5mm jack, giving users more options to connect to external speakers or headphones.

Available for pre-order in the Netherlands, ships on April 29

Both the Wi-Fi and LTE variants are now available for pre-order in the Netherlands for €379 and €439, respectively (including VAT). We can safely assume that other European countries will follow suit with pre-order pages of their own.

Dutch customers who will pre-order the tablet will receive a free book cover case. This optional accessory with an S Pen holder would normally cost €69.99 when purchased separately.

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is available for pre-order only in Oxford Gray and Agora Blue in the Netherlands, with the third flavor ‘Chiffon Pink’ missing at the time of writing. Likewise, Samsung’s press release confirms that a 128GB version will be released along with the 64GB model, but only the latter is available for pre-order for the time being.

Samsung is making a $1 million donation to the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas Coronavirus Response & Recovery Fund to support the city’s efforts against the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The donation will help address the most immediate and urgent needs of North Texans and the city’s long-term recovery plans.

The fund was established in mid-March and, so far, it has granted over $2 million to 144 organizations fighting against the local outbreak. Samsung has just given us one million more ways to help. We’re humbled by their generosity and support stated Jennifer Sampson, McDermott-Templeton President and CEO of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas.

Samsung has numerous facilities and thousands of employees in the Metro Dallas area, and the company plays a vital role in communities in which our employees live and work, said YH Eom, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics America.

Addressing supply shortages, school closures, the economy and more

The United Way of Metropolitan Dallas Coronavirus Response & Recovery Fund addresses the immediate needs of North Texas residents. These resources will be used to curb supply shortages of hand sanitizer, paper goods, cleaning products, and potentially food.

The fund is also looking to support schools and childcare programs during their extended closures, as well as the economic impact felt by countless workers in the retail, service, and travel industries.

Galaxy Note 10 gets a minor new firmware update in Europe

Samsung is following up on the One UI 2.1 release for the Galaxy Note 10 with a new firmware update in Europe. One UI remains unchanged and no new features have been added through this new update. The firmware version is also the same at N97xFXXU3CTC9, but the changelog claims that the stability of functions has been improved.

The new firmware update appears to bring some network-based improvements to the Galaxy Note 10, but they may not be noticeable by end users. The changelog also mentions bug fixes but doesn’t detail them, as well as the implementation of the latest security patch; but once again, the April 2020 security patch was already included in the One UI 2.1 update.

The new firmware update is rolling out in Europe

The original One UI 2.1 update for the Galaxy Note 10 and S10 series began rolling out more than a week ago, and the S Pen device was also updated to One UI 2.1 in Canada just a couple of days back. It remains to be seen if the new mysterious firmware update will remain a European exclusive or if it will be widely released in every region where One UI 2.1 is available for the Galaxy Note 10.

As always, you can download the new firmware by tapping the update notification once it arrives on your phone, or you can trigger the process manually by opening Settings, navigating to Software update, and tapping Download and install. You can also check our firmware archive.

The 512GB Galaxy S20 Ultra will be available in the next 3 months

Samsung UK also revealed that the Galaxy S20 Ultra with 512GB of storage will be available for purchase online within the next 3 months. As yet, only the 128GB model is listed in the online shop.

It’s official: Samsung Cloud will no longer sync your keyboard data

Samsung has officially announced that starting April 13th, it no longer provides the ability to sync keyboard data through Samsung Cloud. That’s just a day after we initially reported about Samsung Cloud losing the keyboard sync feature on Galaxy devices that launched in 2020 running One UI 2.1. Samsung has now posted a notice in the Samsung Cloud app confirming that this is a deliberate change and not an accidental one as we had been hoping.

Time to switch to a different keyboard app

Basically, if you use Samsung Keyboard, your saved words and keyboard settings will not carry over when you switch to a new Galaxy device and sign in to your Samsung account. It’s rather unfortunate, and Samsung Keyboard users might want to switch to a different keyboard app. There are plenty of apps to choose from in the Google Play Store, including some excellent options like SwiftKey and Google’s Gboard that sync all your keyboard data — including saved words, language options, and prediction data — across devices.

Samsung hasn’t said why it has suddenly decided to remove keyboard sync from Samsung Cloud. In fact, it was only after we published our report on the matter that Samsung decided to push out an official notice telling everyone that keyboard sync is no longer supported, though it seems to have sneakily backdated the notice to March 15th. For now, the company says the rest of the Samsung Cloud functionality is not affected, so data for apps like Samsung Calendar, Contacts, Internet, Notes, and Samsung Pass will continue to sync to your Samsung account.

What do you think about the culling of the sync feature for Samsung Keyboard? Will you continue using the app or will you be switching to a different keyboard? Let us know down in the comments!

Samsung confirms 2020 8K QLED TVs for Malaysia release

Samsung confirmed its recently announced 8K QLED TVs will soon be released in Malaysia. Following their January debut at CES 2020, the world’s first TVs with Wi-Fi 6 support will become available for purchase in Malaysia next month. The local division of Samsung has yet to attach a specific release date to any member of its latest smart TV family.

Samsung’s 2020 ultra-premium TVs are spread out across several distinct models: The Frame, The Sero, The Serif, and the impressively bezel-less Q950TS, which is also the de facto face of the series. With diagonals ranging from 55 to 85 inches, the company’s new TVs are targeting virtually every modern viewing setting, using profound AI integrations as their common starting point.

Samsung’s latest 8K TVs arriving to Malaysia in May

The company’s latest and greatest smart television sets are already listed on Samsung Malaysia’s pages, albeit without pricing information. That isn’t to say we don’t know what to expect as Samsung’s Dutch division recently placed the Q950TS’s starting price at €6,000, which amounts to just over 28,000 ringgit. The 85-inch model, on the other hand, is releasing at over €13,700 (65,000 ringgit). The TVs should still be somewhat cheaper than in the Netherlands given how the Malaysian Sales and Service Tax is rather lightweight (6%) compared to the Dutch VAT rate (21%), not to mention the difference in per capita purchasing powers between the two countries.

Much like their marketing monikers imply, The Sero, The Serif, and the Frame are part of Samsung’s so-called Lifestyle TV portfolio, whereas the Q950TS is positioned as a solution for the most hardcore niche of viewers with deep pockets.

Local consumers interested in staying on top of pricing and availability news concerning these state-of-the-art TVs can sign up for email updates from Samsung Malaysia.

Samsung Galaxy A21 moving closer to release after certification

The Galaxy A21 is inching closer toward release as Samsung keeps wrapping up its regulatory paperwork. Several variants of the upcoming Android smartphone have now been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance, a telecom standards body that approves electronics for consumer use in the West.

According to the certificates published by the Wi-Fi Alliance, Samsung is preparing no fewer than three Galaxy A21 iterations identified by model numbers SM-A215U1, SM-A215W, and SM-S215DL (US unlocked, Canadian, and carrier variant for Tracfone respectively).

Samsung’s take on a budget-friendly Android 10 experience

Following a benchmark listing and a couple of press render leaks, the Galaxy A21 was ultimately confirmed as official last week, though news of its impending arrival kind of got lost in numerous other product announcements Samsung made that day. As far as the sequel to the popular Galaxy A20 is concerned, the South Korean juggernaut only said it’s planning to release it this summer. However, with the WFA approval already being out of the way, that release window now appears to be leaning more toward June than September.

The newly discovered product certifications also underline what Samsung already revealed several days ago – all versions of its latest budget-friendly handset will run One UI based on Android 10 out of the box. American consumers eyeing the Galaxy A21 will be asked to part with $249.99, though no international pricing or availability details have been disclosed to date. In the meantime, Samsung is still in the process of getting the Galaxy A21 approved by Bluetooth SIG, another tech authority crucial to any mobile business with even a semblance of Western aspirations.

Galaxy Note 9 One UI 2.1 update still appears to be a possibility

There’s little clarity about whether the Galaxy Note 9 One UI 2.1 update is ever going to be released. As you’d expect, those who own the device are really looking forward to receiving the latest iteration of Samsung’s custom Android skin on their handset.

There have been some mixed signals from the moderators on Samsung’s official forums for Korea which has led to confusion about the update. The latest update from a moderator on the forums suggests that there’s still a possibility that One UI 2.1 may be released for the Galaxy Note 9.

One UI 2.1 update may eventually be released for the Galaxy Note 9

A notification was sent through the Samsung Members app in South Korea two weeks ago which suggested that currently there were no plans to bring One UI 2.1 to the Galaxy Note 9. The same would understandably apply to the Galaxy S9 as well.

Naturally, a lot of Galaxy Note 9 owners have been asking questions about the possibility of this update being sent out over on the forums. A moderator from the software team has now pointed out they’re still in the process of figuring out which features can be added to One UI 2.1 for the Galaxy Note 9.

One UI 2.1 brings several best Galaxy S20 camera features like Single Take, Night Hyperlapse, Pro mode for video, etc to smartphones and the team is working to find out if the optimal performance for these features can be guaranteed on the Galaxy Note 9.

The moderator further adds that this review process is going to take time so it might be a while before we get to know for sure if One UI 2.1 for the Galaxy Note 9 is ever going to come out, adding that the team will do its best to provide a stable software experience on the Galaxy Note 9.

So while today’s update from the team doesn’t completely confirm that the Galaxy Note 9 One UI 2.1 update is definitely going to be released, at least it gives some hope that the door is not yet closed on this possibility. However, given how often such statements can change, this is still far from a done deal.
