Samsung reveals what went into designing the Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition

There’s no denying the fact that the Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition is one of the most attractive smartphones on the market. However, I often wonder how the design team came up with the idea for the handset. It’s clearly a very special device, and Samsung wanted to make using it on a daily basis an unforgettable experience, but how did it achieve this? It would appear that I’m not the only person wondering these things as Senior Designers Kwangmoon Kim and Junwon Lee, and Assistant Designer Soohyun Kim have decided to share the story behind the development of the phone.

Many questions that I had were answered during the lengthy interview, such as what the main aim behind the Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition was and how it and Galaxy S7 edge Black Onyx differ. If you’d like to find out answers to these questions, too, simply hit the source link below to read the full Q&A over on Samsung’s website. I’d definitely advise you to do so as I, personally, found it to be a very good read.

Samsung releases 4K video samples shot using the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge

Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are not the company’s first phones to support 4K UHD video recording, but that doesn’t stop the company from showing off video recording chops of its latest flagship smartphones.

Samsung has published a new video that contains samples of 4K UHD videos recorded using the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. Both these smartphones come with 12-megapixel primary cameras with a 1/2.6-inch sensor, dual-pixel phase-detection autofocus, OIS, and ƒ/1.7 aperture.

Note: Don’t forget to switch to 2160p 4K mode in YouTube before watching the video.

Samsung Pay updated with support for Citibank credit cards in Australia and Singapore

Samsung Pay has today received a long-awaited server side update in Australia and Singapore. In terms of added functionality, the upgrade introduces support for Citibank credit cards in the regions. It also transports a plethora of behind–the–scenes bug fixes, stability improvements and speed optimizations to the application, which have been designed to make paying for goods using the platform an even smoother experience for customers.

“We are delighted to work with Samsung Electronics to offer our credit card customers a faster and easier way of making payments using Samsung Pay. Our value propositions are already best in each category and through this partnership, we bring added convenience to our credit card customers who can now simply use their mobile phones to tap and pay for their purchases,” said Sergio Zanatti, Head of Cards & Unsecured Loans for Citi in Asia Pacific.

Unfortunately, there are a couple of Citibank cards that aren’t supported at this precise moment in time, which means that you’re going to want to head over to Samsung Pay’s website to see which cards are compatible and which are not. If you notice that yours isn’t there, don’t panic as the firm is continuously adding new cards to its lineup — so it shouldn’t be too much longer until you see support for your card.

Samsung to start manufacturing Galaxy Note 7 in July

The Galaxy Note 7 (as we first believed) has already transformed into the Galaxy Note 7 edge with a teaser to confirm as much, and with early reports that Samsung has been using the “Galaxy Note 7 edge” moniker, the Korean giant has been diligently pursuing the new handset’s production. Now, a report out of Korea says that production of the handset will start in July, with an initial batch of 2.5 million copies made. The Korean giant will manufacture another 2.5 million handsets the following month, resulting in 5 million Galaxy Note 7 handsets available for purchase immediately after the scheduled August 2nd announcement for the next-generation Galaxy.

Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 5 slightly earlier last year than it did the Galaxy Note 4 (which launched in September). In order to take advantage of early adopters whose pockets are always “itching” for new handsets, Samsung moved up its announcement to August instead of September. The company launched its devices in mid-August last year, but with a date this year that is two weeks earlier than usual, it appears as though Samsung isn’t waiting around for its most formidable American foe at all.

The Galaxy Note 7 will be the first Galaxy Note device to have dual-curved edges, with the single-curved edge Galaxy Note 4 remaining the origin of the edge movement in Samsung’s smartphone lineup. The device will feature a 5.8-inch, Super AMOLED (Slim RGB) display with a Quad HD (1440p) resolution, Qualcomm’s more updated Snapdragon 823 processor, 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 32/64GB of storage, a 5MP front camera (f/1.7), 12MP back camera (f/1.7) that’s but one of a dual-lens setup, a 4,000mAh battery, and USB Type-C charging. The Galaxy Note 7 will also feature a Samsung Focus communications app alongside of an iris scanner (now two years in the making) that will be manufactured by Patron. Get ready to “write on the edge of something great.”

Samsung to compete with Amazon, Google, IBM, and Microsoft with acquisition of cloud services firm Joyent

Samsung has announced that it will acquire a US-based cloud provider Joyent, which will allow the company to have its own cloud platform to support its smartphones, IoT products, and other software services. Joyent will remain as a standalone company after the acquisition.

The South Korean technology giant had been dependent on other cloud vendors such as Amazon Web Services, but this acquisition will make Samsung self-reliant in that regard. Moreover, Joyent could reach out to more clients using Samsung’s global network.

Samsung evaluated a wide range of potential companies in the public and private cloud infrastructure space with a focus on leading-edge scalable technology and talent. In Joyent, we saw an experienced management team with deep domain expertise and a robust cloud technology validated by some of the largest Fortune 500 customers,” said Injong Rhee, CTO of Samsung’s mobile business, in a statement regarding the acquisition.

Samsung has been attempting to create its own cloud platform for years in collaboration with Samsung SDS, its IT services arm, but failed. Joyent’s solutions such as container-native infrastructure, object storage, server-less computing, and Node.js will allow Samsung to scale its own cloud infrastructure.

Exclusive: Samsung to release improved Game Launcher with tons of new features

Samsung started focusing on mobile games with the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, which are the first smartphones in the world to support the Vulkan API for 3D graphics. The company introduced Game Launcher and Game Tools with its latest flagship smartphones, but it isn’t stopping there. Samsung will soon launch an improved version of Game Launcher with tons of new features for mobile gamers.

The new version of Game Launcher will bring Game Scene, a full-screen section where all the installed games are listed in a tiles format along with a separate area for game notifications. There will be a dedicated area in the Game Launcher where trending games are showcased. Any game can be marked as a favorite, while others can be pinned to their current locations in the list.

The list of games can be sorted in multiple ways, and manual arrangement will also be possible with Game Scene. Users will be able to subscribe to specific YouTube channels for things such as video walkthroughs. Apps, web links, and images can also be listed in Game Scene.

Moreover, the Game Tools floating button inside games will also show battery percentage, free storage, and RAM consumed so that gamers can stay informed about these parameters at all times. Meanwhile, the ability to record gameplay and share it on social networks will become easier after the update.

What do you think of the new features Samsung will be introducing to Game Launcher? Do you use Game Launcher and Game Tools on your Galaxy S7 or S7 edge?

Samsung highlights how the Galaxy S7 is being used in the workplace to cater to customers needs

Samsung has taken to its official Business USA Twitter account to share a short 13-second video highlighting how Levi Lohrman, a Solutions Consultant at the Continental Automotive Group, is using his Galaxy S7 in the workplace to be as productive as possible and cater to his customer’s needs.

In the short clip, Lohrman can be seen walking around a workshop. He then pulls out his Galaxy S7 and scans a barcode that’s mounted next to a car. Consequently, a flurry of information appears on the screen, including the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and the reason it’s in the building, which, in this case, is for a wash.

Samsung comes up with an innovative way to get teens to do their laundry

Parents of teenagers will attest to the fact that it’s quite difficult to get your teens to do their chores. You often need to give them some sort of an incentive to give up whatever it is they’re doing and help out around the house. Samsung has come up with a very innovative way to get teens to do their laundry. It has set up a LANdry in Sweden where people get gaming credits for doing their laundry. As someone who did a lot of LAN gaming in my teens, I’m pretty sure I would have never left the LANdry.

The LANdry experiment basically puts a LAN gaming zone inside a laundromat, which predictably features Samsung AddWash washing machines and the Galaxy S7 that shows people how much time they’ve left until the wash and their gaming session are done. Trading dirty laundry for gaming time seems like the best way to get teens to do this chore and it also conveniently helps Samsung attract the attention of millennials, something that its marketing department is striving to do. It’s unclear if this experiment will be expanded to other markets but it goes without saying that are many parents who will welcome a Samsung LANdry in their neighborhood.

Samsung denies reports of major investment in 3D NAND production

It was reported earlier today that Samsung is going to extend its production facilities for 3D NAND flash memories by investing a few billion dollars in new production lines at its facilities in Hwasung. It was said that Samsung is taking this step to solidify its position in the memory market by increasing production capacity starting from the second half of this year. Turns out that isn’t happening because Samsung has officially refuted these reports.

“The company has not set detailed plans for the investment as the 3-D NAND flash memory business has just started to take off recently,” Samsung said in a statement, reiterating that news reports suggesting otherwise are unfounded. The reports came at a time when the company’s rivals like TSMC and SK hynix are working on mass production of 3D NAND flash memory chips and companies like Intel are developing new technology said to be 1,000 times faster that NAND flash memory chips, however, it may take a while for these chips enter the market.

Galaxy Note 7 iris scanner will reportedly be supplied by Patron

It has been rumored multiple times that the next Galaxy Note handset is going to feature an iris scanner. Samsung recently launched a Galaxy Iris tablet for the government and businesses in India, and it has received several trademarks recently which hints at the iris scanner finally being brought to a consumer device. A new report says that Korean camera firm Patron is going to supply Samsung with its iris camera modules for the Galaxy Note 7.

Patron reportedly won a bid to supply the entire volume of iris camera modules for the upcoming Galaxy Note flagship. Iris scanning will offer enhanced security to users as it will recognize 266 traits on an iris as opposed to 40 traits a fingerprint sensor recognizes. Samsung is believed to have considered implementing iris scanning back with the Galaxy S4 but it passed on the feature then because the technology wasn’t advanced enough. It appears that the company feels the time is right to introduce iris scanning in its consumer devices. The Galaxy Note 7 is expected to be unveiled on August 2, 2016.

OnePlus 3 uses Samsung’s Super AMOLED display

Samsung has been lending its chipsets to other brands such as Meizu and DeePoon. The Nexus 6P featured an AMOLED panel from Samsung, and it has now been uncovered that the recently announced OnePlus 3 smartphone uses Samsung’s Super AMOLED display.

OnePlus is marketing the display on the OnePlus 3 as an Optic AMOLED panel. However, the company’s co-founder Carl Pei has explained in a Reddit AMA session that it’s nothing but a current-generation Super AMOLED panel with the company’s own take on contrast and color temperature.

Samsung pushes out June security update for the Galaxy A5 (2016)

The Galaxy A5 (2016) is the latest handset in Samsung’s never-ending lineup of smartphones to receive this month’s Security Maintenance Release (SMR). The upgrade is relatively similar to the firmware that the manufacturer started distributing to the European model of the Galaxy Note 4 earlier today. However, this build doesn’t bring any new features to the device. It simply transports all of Google’s latest patches for the Android OS, in addition to a handful of Samsung-specific optimizations, which includes a fix for a vulnerability that enabled hackers to bypass the lock screen using a USB cable.

If you own a Galaxy A5 (2016), are located in Asia or Europe and would like to see if the firmware is ready to be installed on your device, you can do so by heading into the Settings screen, tapping About Device, selecting Software Update, then hitting the Update Now button. However, if you don’t feel like taking a tour through the menus, you could always wait until you receive a push notification prompting you to download the OTA. It’s worth noting that you will need at least 50% of battery and be connected to a secure Wi-Fi network in order to receive the alert, though.

Samsung Pay will be available in the country starting today on compatible Samsung smartphones including the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, and Galaxy Note 5.

Samsung Z2 receives Bluetooth certification

We’ve known for a little over a month that Samsung is working on a new Tizen-powered smartphone for the Indian market, which has been dubbed the Samsung Z2. Unfortunately, details with regards to a launch date have been non-existent, but it looks like the handset is one step closer to seeing the light of day as it has just passed received Bluetooth certification bearing the model number SM-Z200F.

The South Korean company has done a pretty good job at keeping the Samsung Z2 under wraps as we don’t ave any leaked specifications to report, either. We do know, however, that the device will ship with an upgraded, more responsive version of Voice Control and will also have a build of S Bike Mode, which has been specifically modified to work on Tizen, available to boot right out of the box.
