Samsung smart TVs now support PlayStation Now game streaming

Sony has been gradually scaling its PlayStation Now cloud-based game streaming service, previously it was only limited to the company’s own products like PlayStation consoles and TVs. However the company did say in December last year that at some point in the future its game streaming service will be supported by Samsung smart TVs, that day is today. Sony has confirmed that PlayStation Now game streaming is now available on select Samsung smart TVs in the United States and Canada.

The compatible smart TVs from Samsung are now the first non-Sony devices to support the cloud-based PlayStation Now game streaming service, players won’t require a PlayStation console however they will need a DualShock 4 controller to play games. PlayStation Now library includes over 100 PlayStation 3 games which can be streamed on demand, initially the games could only be rented individually, but Sony has since launched a $19.99 per month subscription plan which lets members stream all the games they want in a month.

The Galaxy S6 Active’s 3,500 mAh battery is an insult to consumers of the regular Galaxy S6

So the Galaxy S6 Active was made official yesterday, but instead of its rugged exterior, the large battery powering the phone was the most notable thing about it. The Galaxy S6 Active features a 3,500 mAh battery, which is almost 1,000 mAh more than the battery on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. I get it: the S6 Active is made for the outdoorsy types, and battery life is a critical thing for when you’re out and about and aren’t expected to have easy access to a wall socket. But the large battery on the phone is also a huge insult to those who bought the standard Galaxy S6 flagships.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge have respectable battery life for the 2,500/2,600 mAh batteries under the hood. The efficient Exynos processor is one of the key reasons why these phones can offer at least average battery life (which would be better if not for Lollipop’s inherent issues) despite having a Quad HD display and other high-end hardware. But there is no denying the fact that Samsung opted to make its latest flagships anorexically thin instead of focusing on battery life, and simply put in wireless charging support to try and make up for what is an extreme case of form over function.

… an extreme case of form over function.

But while we were only just getting used to the fact that we will have to live with the unimpressive battery life on the S6 duo, Samsung has now come out with the Galaxy S6 Active, making us wonder if the company could have done something to make the batteries on the S6 and S6 edge even slightly smaller. Okay, so maybe a 3,000 mAh battery would be a stretch and ruin the immaculate designs, but Samsung could have at least stuck to the 2,800 mAh battery from the Galaxy S5.

The Galaxy S6 Active is exclusive to North American carrier AT&T for now, so only a very small portion of consumers will actually be able to get their hands on one. But still, since the moment the phone was announced, I’ve almost been seething with anger about the fact that the S6 Active will be able to offer battery life considerably higher than what my S6 edge can manage.

It’s nothing less than an insult to the millions that have bought the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, and I really hope Samsung doesn’t make the same mistake again. The company has fixed most of its shortcomings with the sixth-generation Galaxy S, and it would be a major disappointment if 2016 brings us the next iteration with handicapped battery life once again.

Here’s hoping Samsung can quicken its pace on those denser batteries it is working on.

Samsung’s ‘Care for Nepal’ project, one for the Nepal earthquake victims

Mankind might be at the peak of its technological prowess, but every now and then we’re reminded that its not man, but nature who’s the boss. More often than not, this lesson is learnt the hard way — as citizens of Nepal did, during and after the disastrous earthquake a month and a half back.

The earthquake left thousands dead and millions homeless, besides marauding property and places. Samsung’s phones and TVs are what you might have heard of the most, but the ‘Care for Nepal’ project that the company undertook for the victims is probably what you would appreciate more than anything else.

Relief camps, recreation centers and communication vans were deployed by Samsung under Care for Nepal. By 5th June 2015, 4,500 people had been provided meals, and over 10,000 calls had been made from relief centers under Care for Nepal.

It’s a project we truly laud, and one that should inspire not only other multinational companies, but also fellow humans of the affected. Here’s hoping that Nepal wakes from the disaster soon.

You can find more info about Care for Nepal here.

Samsung gearing up to launch the Galaxy Tab E lineup?

Earlier this year we ran across trademark applications from Samsung for the Galaxy Tab A, Galaxy Tab E and the Galaxy Tab J, and it looks like the Galaxy Tab E is right around the corner. Samsung hasn’t made an official announcement yet, but the Galaxy Tab E has been listed in this month’s edition of a Taiwanese magazine. According to Blog of Mobile, the tablet will feature the model number SM-T560.

In terms of specs, we’re looking at a 9.7-inch display (1280×768 pixels) that’s not following the 4:3 aspect ratio Samsung is adopting for the Galaxy Tab S2. The Galaxy Tab E could possibly be the Galaxy Tab 5 that was leaked around the same time the trademark application was discovered, and it seems the iPad-ish aspect ratio might not make it to the company’s budget tablets. The tablet also has a processor clocked at 1.3GHz (most likely a quad-core unit), and a 5-megapixel rear camera.

The Tab E should be running Android 5.0 Lollipop whenever it launches, but it remains to be seen if it will feature the same new TouchWiz UX as the Galaxy S6 or the upcoming Galaxy J7 (it doesn’t seem to be the case from the picture of the tablet.) Overall, we can expect it to be as run-of-the-mill as Samsung’s current affordable Galaxy Tab lineup, though we will reserve judgement until the Korean manufacturer makes things official.

Samsung launches first Mirror and Transparent OLED panels

At the Retail Asia Expo 2015 in Hong Kong, Samsung unveiled the industry’s first Mirror and Transparent OLED display panels in a showcase for informational browsing and personalized shopping. The exhibition is a proof of concept from Samsung which shows just how these products can be used in consumer electronic devices as it demonstrates the first retail use of advanced commercial OLED panels. The new Samsung Display OLED panel is integrated with Intel RealSense technology which allows it to create solutions like an interactive closet or a “self-modeling” wardrobe which lets users virtually “see” how clothes or other items would fit them.

The Samsung Mirror Display might replace conventional home mirrors at some point in the future, it will basically provide digital information services to users in the same space where they just have the mirror right now. The company says that its Mirror OLED panel will deliver at least 50 percent higher reflectance that competitive Mirror LCDs as well as significantly improved color gamut and exceptionally high contrast ratio. Moreover Samsung’s new mirror display technology does not require ambient backlight to display on-screen images. It hasn’t been revealed so far if these new technologies will soon be making their way into a consumer electronic device, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see some companies leverage these new OLED panels in their new products in the future.
