Samsung highlights a decade of Galaxy innovations in a new infographic

Samsung launched the first Galaxy phone, the Galaxy GT-I7500, ten years back on June 29, 2009. Since then, sales of Galaxy devices have grown at a rapid pace to make Samsung the world’s largest smartphone vendor. Its flagship devices, in particular, have been the default choice for Android customers for many years, thanks to the cutting-edge technology they incorporate. Celebrating this journey of Galaxy devices, Samsung has come up with the new infographic highlighting a decade of innovations they brought to the market.

AMOLED displays

The first smartphone to feature a Super AMOLED display was the Galaxy S from 2010. The rest is history. These displays have become a trademark feature of Galaxy devices since then. Eventually, even rivals — including Apple — started using AMOLED displays on their devices, which stands as a testament to Samsung’s technological prowess and vision. The company’s displays have been consistently rated as the best in the market by many experts.

The S Pen

Samsung introduced the S Pen in 2011 when it launched the first Galaxy Note smartphone. Though smartphone styluses existed before, Samsung’s creation was technologically superior and came paired with a large-screen smartphone, which made it an instant hit in the market. Even to this day, the S Pen remains as the most unique feature of the Galaxy Note lineup, with the company adding new features to it every year.

Samsung Knox

Android devices were for long believed to be insecure and unsuitable for enterprise deployment. Samsung tried to address this concern by launching Samsung Knox with the Galaxy Note 3 in 2013. It is a comprehensive security solution that provides a secure environment to store and manage sensitive data on Galaxy devices. The Korean company eventually brought Knox to its wearables, tablets, and select home appliances as well, and it was then partly adopted by Google for the Android OS itself.

Biometric Authentication

This one is a bit of PR speak from Samsung. Though the company incorporated a fingerprint scanner into the Galaxy S5 in 2014, it neither was the first nor did it perform well. The later iterations were much better and performed on par with the competition. It also introduced iris and facial recognition systems in subsequent years, but they are either a bit slow or insecure. However, Samsung did launch the first ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S10, which is better than the optical solutions in the market.

IP68 Dust and Water Resistance

Again, Samsung was not the first to bring dust and water-resistant capabilities to smartphones, but it did make the feature go mainstream when it launched the Galaxy S5 with IP67 rating in 2014 and the Galaxy S7 with IP68 rating two years later. Every Galaxy S and Note flagship comes with IP68 certification as standard to this day.

Wireless Charging

The Galaxy S6, launched in 2015, was the first Samsung device to support wireless charging. Though Samsung didn’t invent this feature, it once again made it mainstream, forcing rivals to adopt the same. The Galaxy S10 lineup takes this feature one step ahead with the Wireless PowerShare feature that transforms Samsung’s latest flagship into a wireless power bank for wearables and other Qi-certified devices.

Samsung Pay

After AMOLED displays, Samsung Pay is probably the company’s biggest innovation to date. The company introduced Samsung Pay with the Galaxy S6 in 2015, and it instantly turned into a marque feature of Galaxy flagship devices. Unlike competing solutions that work only at NFC-equipped PoS terminals, Samsung Pay works at every outlet that can accept your debit or credit card, which makes it, perhaps, the best mobile payment solution on the market.

The Infinity Display

Displays were always the biggest strength of Samsung devices. So, it is unsurprising the company kickstarted the trend of bezel-less screens with its Infinity Display on the Galaxy S8 in 2017. Samsung wasn’t the first with the bezel-less concept, but the alternatives were niche devices that wouldn’t have turned that concept into the force it is today thanks to the Korean giant. It’s too bad the company continues to flip flop between the location for the circular front camera cutouts on its 2019 flagships, although none of those implementations are as obtrusive as an iPhone-like notch would be.

Bixby

It is difficult to understand why Samsung thinks Bixby is a major innovation, but the company does list it as one in the infographic. Bixby is Samsung’s AI platform that made its debut on the Galaxy S8 in 2017. Since then, the company has been playing catch-up with competing solutions such as Google Assistant and Apple Siri. Samsung plans to bring Bixby to all its devices in the future, which will hopefully make it better and more useful.

Pro-grade Camera (Dual Aperture)

For many years, iPhones were considered to have the best smartphone cameras in the market due to their simplicity and consistency. Samsung fought back by making its smartphone camera’s simple and powerful over the years. The company also introduced many new camera features in an attempt to leap ahead of the competition in smartphone photography. One such pro-grade camera feature is the Dual Aperture technology that was introduced with the Galaxy S9 in 2018. This tech helps smartphone cameras adjust to various lighting conditions and take great pictures in all environments. It is worth noting that, despite all these improvements, Samsung still doesn’t have the best smartphone cameras as far as still photography is concerned, although they are very close to the top performers out there.

Check out Samsung’s infographic below, then let us know what you think about Samsung’s list of top innovations down in the comments. Do you agree with them? Comment below with your own list that makes you buy a Galaxy smartphone.

Galaxy Watch Active 2 Under Armour edition flexes in leaked render

A couple of weeks ago we came across a report claiming that the Galaxy Watch Active 2 will get an Under Armour-branded model. Now a render showcasing this Watch 2 variant has popped-up online via @evleaks.

According to this render, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 Under Armour edition will be released in two color options for the strap, black or gray. Said wrist straps carry the UA logo while the watch itself has a special theme featuring the same branding.

The Under Armour edition should come with MapMyRun pre-loaded

Aside from getting a fresh coat of paint and an appropriate watchface, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 Under Armour model will reportedly be integrated with the company’s MapMyRun application and include six months of free access to the service.

There will be two standard Watch Active 2 models in 40mm and 44mm sizes aside from the Under Armour edition. All the variants are expected to feature an ECG monitor which might not be active at launch due to lengthy FDA approvals. However, the Watch Active 2 is expected to take advantage of Fall Detection and Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) notifications from day one.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 will be officially introduced on August 5, two days before the Galaxy Note 10 series will debut in New York City. As we’ve exclusively reported not long ago, the upcoming smartwatch is expected to be the first in Samsung’s lineup to feature a touch bezel instead of a physical one. If you have an opinion regarding this design choice you can voice it below or by participating in this poll.

[Poll] Are you going to buy the Galaxy Tab S6?

Samsung has finally unveiled its flagship tablet for 2019, the Galaxy Tab S6. There’s little that wasn’t already known about this device before its official unveiling today. Samsung now has the mammoth task of convincing people to actually buy it.

That may prove to be easier said than done. The tablet market continues to be in a state of decline while the Galaxy Tab S5e remains a more affordable option for the casual user. Prices for the Galaxy Tab S6 start at 699 euro so it’s not exactly what you’d call cheap.

You do get quite a bit of tablet for that money. There’s a 10.5-inch display, the latest Snapdragon 855 processor with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage as standard. The new S Pen is much more capable than ever before and there’s even a dual camera at this back. Pop artist Coco Capitán shows off the Galaxy Tab S6 in promo videos

Samsung has launched two promotional videos for the freshly-announced Galaxy Tab S6. They both star New York and London-based artist Coco Capitán and aim to show examples of how the tablet can fit into an artist’s workflow thanks to the inclusion of a new S Pen, Samsung Notes, and DeX functionality.

Coco Capitán is a photographer, painter, and poet, whose signature handwritten aphorisms have been used for marketing by fashion brands including Gucci. Now, her unique approach to pop art has been felt by the Galaxy Tab S6. In the promo video below, the artist claims that the stylus is very precise, giving a feeling similar to writing on paper. Likewise, the artist commends the tablet for being light and thin, making it easier to use with one hand.

The S Pen is an artist’s ally

The Galaxy Tab S6 features an improved stylus boasting a new gesture feature called S Pen Air, which offers the possibility to remotely control multimedia content on the device. The S Pen magnetically attaches to a groove on the back of the tablet and its internal battery recharges automatically whenever the stylus is placed in its slot.

This way, users won’t have to worry about recharging the S Pen as long as it’s placed back in its groove when they’re done using it. The new S Pen is rated for 10 hours standby and remains connected to the tablet at a distance of up to 10 meters. This range is put to good use as the S Pen has Bluetooth remote control features and doubles as a shutter button for the camera.

The secondary ultra-wide camera is a nice touch

Another feature that has been highlighted in the promotional videos is the dual-camera system featuring an ultra-wide-angle lens. The dual camera is a completely new addition to Samsung’s tablet lineup, as previous iterations have been equipped with a single rear-facing shooter. The new setup comprises a 13MP sensor with an 80-degree wide lens and F2.0 aperture, as well as the ultra-wide unit with a field of view of 123 degrees, F2.2 aperture, and a resolution of 5MP.

With the Galaxy Tab S6, Samsung appears to have steered its tablet lineup a little bit more into the area of tools designed to fuel creativity. But the tablet also promises to be a good choice for multimedia consumption, thanks to the inclusion of four speakers and the 10.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a pixel count of 2560 by 1600. Samsung Pay Touch app turns your Galaxy smartphone into a PoS terminal

Samsung has quietly launched the Samsung Pay Touch app to target small businesses in Canada. The app transforms compatible Galaxy smartphones into PoS (Point-of-Sale) terminals that can accept contactless payments from customers. So far, Samsung Pay has been limited to customers making payments through their Galaxy smartphones and wearables, but with this solution, the Korean company is taking it to the merchant side of things as well.

The biggest advantage of Samsung Pay Touch is that it doesn’t require any additional hardware to set up. As long as you have a compatible Galaxy smartphone, you can download the app and complete the registration to start using it right away. Supported models include Galaxy S8/S8+, Note8, S9/S9+, Note9, and S10e/S10/S10+. It is safe to assume the Galaxy Note 10 will also join the list once it is available.

Credit card purchases are charged at 2.6% per transaction, while debit cards incur a flat $0.10 per transaction. Merchants will get the payments automatically deposited in their bank accounts within 48 hours. Samsung’s solution also comes with a long list of features that can rival dedicated PoS systems.

Samsung seems to have launched this app in May itself, but it went mostly unnoticed by the press. The app made its debut in the Galaxy Store but eventually made its way to the Google Play Store as well. The Play Store listing has just 1,000+ downloads and a 2.3 rating, with many users complaining about registration issues. As of now, the app seems to be unavailable outside Canada.

Thanks for the tip, Lyndex Kim Quesada!

Galaxy A70 July security update brings Night mode and QR scanner

Samsung is rolling out a second software update of the month for the Galaxy A70 in India. The new update brings a Night mode for the camera and also adds the July 2019 security patch. The previous update added the Super steady camera feature to the device but came with the May security patch.

Galaxy A70 gets better at low-light photography

The Galaxy A70 is arguably the best 2019 Galaxy A phone right now. The Galaxy A80 may have a faster processor, a no-notch screen, and a cool camera system, yet it leaves a lot to be desired. The A70, meanwhile, is only getting better. As we pointed out in our review, it is a powerhouse of a phone with just a few limitations, like its low-light photography skills. Samsung is now addressing that limitation by adding the Night mode feature with the latest software update.

The update, which is now available over the air in India, also adds the QR scanner to the Galaxy A70’s camera. Complete with the July 2019 security patch, the update weighs in at 367 MB and comes with the firmware version A705GMDDU3ASG6. It should make its way to other countries soon.

To upgrade your Galaxy A70 to the latest firmware, head over to the phone’s Settings » Software update menu and hit the Download and install option. You might want to try this a couple of times if the update doesn’t immediately show up, or wait a day or two. Alternatively, you can download the firmware for the latest update from our database and manually upgrade the device using a Windows PC.

No 25W super fast charging for the Galaxy Tab S6

The Galaxy Tab S6 comes with Samsung’s old 15W Quick Charge 2.0/Adaptive Fast Charge fast charging technology instead of the new 25W super fast charging that debuted on the Galaxy S10 5G. This may be a bummer for some prospective consumers, who would expect Samsung’s new flagship tablet to have all the latest features. However, the company has always been shy of equipping its tablets as well as it equips its flagship smartphones, so this shouldn’t come as a surprise to everyone.

Moreover, with the kind of battery life tablets provide, the traditional 15W fast charging should be sufficient. There’s also the fact that the large batteries inside tablets would take time to charge even with faster charging speeds, so it’s not a bad idea for Samsung to keep 25W super fast charging out of the Tab S6’s spec sheet in order to keep the price of the device more palatable. The Galaxy Tab S6 is an expensive tablet however you look at it, although some folks might be disappointed that they have to miss out on features like a 3.5mm headphone jack as well despite paying so much.

Hopefully, 25W charging will be available on the Galaxy Tab S7 (or whatever the Tab S6 successor is called). With the competition offering some insane fast charging technology on their smartphones, Samsung’s 15W charging is looking very outdated these days. The Galaxy Note 10+ may even have support for 45W charging (and perhaps the regular Note 10 as well), so there’s certainly hope the Korean giant’s 25W fast charging tech will have become commonplace on Galaxy devices by 2020.

Galaxy Tab S6 doesn’t have a headphone jack, no dongle in the box either

Many have been wondering if the Galaxy Tab S6 will have a headphone jack. It’s another one of Samsung’s high-end device to fall victim to the no headphone jack philosophy. Samsung unveiled the tablet today and the Galaxy Tab S6 most certainly doesn’t have a headphone jack.

For a while now, the company has been slowly testing the waters by leaving out the 3.5-millimeter port on a handful of devices, ranging from affordable to top-tier. The list includes the Galaxy M40, the Galaxy A80, and the Galaxy Tab S5e.

The Galaxy Tab S6 doesn’t come with a dongle; the Galaxy Tab S5e does

What makes the situation worse for the Galaxy Tab S6 is that the company didn’t include a USB Type-C-to-3.5mm dongle in the retail box. For a device such as the Galaxy M40 – which doesn’t include a dongle either –, this decision is a little bit easier to understand given the segment to which the phone belongs. However, not including this accessory in the Galaxy Tab S6 retail box is a tougher pill to swallow especially if you consider the fact that the Galaxy Tab S5e comes with a dongle right out of the box. The Galaxy Tab S6 is a newer, more powerful model and should outshine the Galaxy Tab S5e in every aspect.

The trend continues

Other devices expected to ditch the 3.5-millimeter port are the upcoming Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+. Likewise, the Galaxy Fold set to launch later in September also lacks a standard headphone jack, so it seems like the South Korean company is committed to doing away with this feature. This will inevitably upset some fans of the brand, and even though Samsung could alleviate this by including a USB Type-C dongle, it doesn’t do this for every device. The decision seems arbitrary and the whole thing comes across as a little bit short-sighted.

This was inevitable, though, and Samsung had to pull the plug at some point. There’s little chance of the headphone jack making a return on future flagship tablets.

Specs comparison: Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 vs Galaxy Tab S6

It’s been two years since your trusty Galaxy Tab S3 came out and while it still may be working well, the tablet will most certainly have started showing its age. The Galaxy Tab S6 may just make sense to you if you’re looking for an upgrade, as this Galaxy Tab S3 vs Galaxy Tab S6 specs comparison will show.

The biggest noticeable difference here is the display. The new flagship tablet has a larger and higher resolution 10.5-inch display compared to the Galaxy Tab S3. The bezels are slimmer as well because there’s no home button and the fingerprint sensor is underneath the display.

It also comes with the latest Snapdragon 855 chip with 6GB of RAM on the base model. This will deliver a performance improvement which will be hard to miss for Galaxy Tab S3 owners. The Galaxy Tab S6 has more internal storage on the base model, a larger battery, better cameras and more on a body that’s quite a bit slimmer at 5.7mm.

If you’re the sort of person who primarily uses their tablet for work, you certainly wouldn’t go wrong with the Galaxy Tab S6. Do check out our Galaxy Tab S6 hands-on to learn more about Samsung’s new flagship tablet. We will have a full review up in the coming weeks.

Specs comparison: Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 vs Galaxy Tab S6

The Galaxy Tab S6 has gone official as the sixth tablet in Samsung’s AMOLED-toting Galaxy Tab S lineup. The Tab S6 is the fifth flagship-tablet in the series and comes with plenty of upgrades to entice Galaxy Tab S4 owners to make the switch. The new S Pen can be used as a remote control thanks to the built-in Bluetooth and also offers some nifty air gestures. There’s a more powerful processor under the hood, more storage out of the box, an optical in-fingerprint sensor, and even a dual rear camera setup for those who take photography on their tablet seriously.

Some things have carried forward unchanged as well, like that beautiful 10.5-inch Super AMOLED display and four AKG-tuned loudspeakers with Dolby Atmos. If you’re wondering exactly how the specs compare on the Galaxy Tab S4 and Galaxy Tab S6, we’ve laid them out in a clean and simple table down below. Don’t forget to check out our devices section for more details on these tablets and our hands-on impressions of the Galaxy Tab S6. Also look forward to our Galaxy Tab S6 review in the coming weeks.
