Here’s an important notice for current and future Galaxy Fold owners

With the troubling reports of Galaxy Fold displays failing on review units, Samsung is going to have some busy days ahead as it tries to tackle the problem and fix things as soon as it possibly can, but it looks like the company may have prevented some of the issues ahead of time by simply placing a few more warnings about how important the preinstalled protective film on the Galaxy Fold display is.

Protective film on Galaxy Fold display is extremely important

Not every case of a broken Galaxy Fold display seems to stem from the removal of the protective film, but that film is important enough for Samsung to put a warning label on the device out of the box, saying that removing the protective layer may cause damage. However, a few more warnings wouldn’t have gone amiss. In fact, we gained access to Samsung’s repair guide that it hands out to its support center staff, and the guide makes the importance of the film clear quite a few times, as you can see in the screenshots below.

But since this repair guide isn’t accessible to the public, those with a Galaxy Fold currently have only one warning telling them not to remove the protective film, and that may be a major oversight on Samsung’s part. Our Galaxy Fold didn’t come with a manual, but considering people don’t really read a product’s user manual, we believe the company should offer multiple push notifications about the film’s importance on the device itself, both when it is being set up and also a few times during regular usage.

Trouble for Samsung: Galaxy Fold display failure affecting review units

Samsung may soon have a public relations nightmare on its hands: Multiple US journalists have revealed that the display on their Galaxy Fold review unit has stopped working after a day or two of use. From Mark Gurman of Bloomberg to popular YouTuber MKBHD, there are at least four reported cases of the Galaxy Fold’s 7.3-inch display going bad, and it seems removing the pre-installed protective film from the display was the reason for it happening for some of them.

Galaxy Fold quality control may need more work

This protective film is apparently not supposed to be removed from the device, but Samsung doesn’t bundle any such warning with the device. And perhaps it’s because the protective film isn’t the primary reason, because a couple of units ran into the same display-breaking issue even though the protective film was not removed. The protective film on the Galaxy Fold doesn’t seem to be a standard screen protector like the one the Galaxy S10 comes with, but it is visible on the display if you look closely, which might prompt people to remove it after they’ve unpacked the device.

We can see this film on our Galaxy Fold as well, but for the moment, our unit is running without issues. It remains to be seen how widespread the problem is, as all current reports are from the US, but it’s possible Samsung will now have to delay the April 26 retail release of the Galaxy Fold. The company has already offered replacements to those who have broken Galaxy Fold review units, although none of them seem to have received those replacements yet so it’s unclear if the new units will the same problem after a few days.

With the Galaxy Fold the first commercial foldable smartphone, having such a major setback with what is its pièce de résistance is not going to be good look for Samsung. Here’s hoping the company is able to fix things quickly, lest it end up with a Foldgate fiasco that puts the kibosh on its plans to define the future of the smartphone.

You can download the wallpapers from the Galaxy S10 5G right here

The Galaxy S10 5G is a step up from the Galaxy S10+ in more than one aspect, one of which is in the customization department. That’s because Samsung has bundled three additional backgrounds on the handset, as well as the standard collection found on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ — and they’re all rather attractive, so much so we’re using a couple over here at SamMobile HQ.

You can take a peek at them below. They’ve been extracted from the handset’s firmware, so you can rest assured that they’re exactly what comes pre-loaded on the Galaxy S10 5G. We haven’t scaled them or altered them in any way. They’re exactly as Samsung intended, in their rawest form. To save one, select it, then right-click on your PC or long-press on your handset and select Save Image As.

So what are the other differences between the Galaxy S10 5G and the Galaxy S10+? For starters, the former has a larger 6.7-inch screen, versus the 6.4-inch one on the latter; a quad-camera setup, instead of a tri-camera configuration; and a bigger 4500mAh cell, rivalling the 4100mAh one on the Galaxy S10+. It also has 4GB more RAM and comes with 256GB of storage in its most basic form.

Galaxy Fold is set to display more natural colors by default

Samsung makes amazing smartphone displays and has been doing so for a few years now. No one was surprised when the folks over at DisplayMate called the Galaxy S10’s display the best there is, and Samsung has been particularly praised for working on color accuracy in recent years. And with the Galaxy S10, Samsung, for the first time, made the more color accurate screen mode the default setting, and we can confirm that is the case with the Galaxy Fold as well.

With the Galaxy S10, Samsung replaced the four screen modes (Adaptive, AMOLED Cinema, AMOLED Photo, and Basic) from its earlier phones with just two options: Vivid and Natural. Before the S10, Galaxy devices with AMOLED displays were always set to Adaptive out of the box, with Basic being the equivalent to Natural mode. The Galaxy S10’s display has very high color accuracy in both modes, and as a result, the difference between Vivid and Natural isn’t as big as one would expect.

In fact, unless one goes looking for that difference, it’s pretty much impossible to know that the default screen mode isn’t at the vivid setting. The Galaxy Fold’s displays are similarly attractive out of the box despite being on the Natural screen mode. Vivid mode still makes for slightly higher color saturation, though, and it can also be customized to have warmer or cooler white balance. The Natural mode isn’t customizable, but again, this is not something that will worry most consumers in any way.

What screen mode do you use on your AMOLED-toting Galaxy smartphone? Tell us in the comments, and don’t forget to check out our early Galaxy Fold impressions.

Galaxy J4, J2 Pro and Tab S3 start receiving April security patch

Samsung has been releasing the April 2019 security update to more and more devices each day. The Galaxy J4, Galaxy J2 Pro, and Tab S3 are the latest batch of Samsung devices to get this update. These devices have started receiving the said update in various markets around the world in the last couple of days.

Among these, the Galaxy J4 update is more widely available compared to the other two devices. The update for the J4 is already out in Peru, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Panama, and a few other regions. The J2 Pro, meanwhile, seems to be receiving the update only in Mexico on Telcel. Similarly, the update for the Galaxy Tab S3 is also not yet widely available and is released only in the UK so far.

While we cannot say for certain, it is doubtful the April update brings anything more than security patches to these devices. The April 2019 Security Maintenance Release (SMR) fixes five critical and dozens of high-risk Android OS vulnerabilities, along with fifteen Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items of varying severity.

If you own one of the above devices, you can check for the update by going to Settings and clicking on the Download updates manually option under the Software update menu. Alternatively, you can also download the newest firmware for these devices from our database and manually flash it to get the latest update instantly.

You can find all the firmware for the Galaxy J4 here, J2 Pro here, and Galaxy Tab S3 here.

Samsung launches Galaxy A60 with Infinity-O display, and Galaxy A40s

Adding to its growing Galaxy A series, Samsung today launched the Galaxy A60 and Galaxy A40s in China. The Galaxy A60 follows the Galaxy A8s in sporting an Infinity-O display panel, whereas the Galaxy A40 is more or less a rebranded Galaxy M30. The two new smartphones have debuted alongside the previously announced Galaxy A70 and Galaxy A80 in China.

Price and specifications

To begin with, the Galaxy A60 features a 6.3-inch Infinity-O LCD display of FHD+ resolution, with a screen-to-body ratio of 91.8%. The punch hole in the top left corner, which reportedly is smaller than that of the Galaxy A8s, packs a 32MP camera for selfies. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 675 SoC and runs Android 9 Pie out of the box.

The Galaxy A60 gets a triple camera setup at the back. There’s a 32MP primary sensor, 8MP wide-angle camera, and a 5MP depth sensor. The back of the phone also houses a capacitive fingerprint sensor. It packs a 3,500mAh battery and supports 25W fast charging via the USB Type-C connector (this is the fourth Samsung phone with 25W charging, following the Galaxy S10 5G, Galaxy A70, and Galaxy A80). The Galaxy A60 comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage.

Tha Galaxy A40s, meanwhile, gets the same specs sheet as the Galaxy M30. So you get a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-U display of FHD+ resolution, Exynos 7904 SoC, a 5,000mAh battery with 15W fast charging support, and a fingerprint reader on the back. It, however, runs Android 9 Pie out of the box.

For optics, the Galaxy A40s also sports a triple-camera setup on the back, featuring a 13MP primary camera, 5MP depth sensor, and a 5MP wide-angle lens. It also gets a 16MP selfie camera on the front. The phone is available in 6GB+64GB configuration in China. Both the Galaxy A60 and the Galaxy A40s come with NFC support, as is standard for mid-range Galaxy phones launched in the country.

Samsung has priced the Galaxy A60 at CNY 1,999 (~$300) in China, whereas the Galaxy A40s is priced at CNY 1,499 (~$225). The Galaxy A70 costs CNY 2,499 (~$375) and CNY 2,799 (~$420) for the 6GB and 8GB models respectively. Samsung did not disclose the price of the Galaxy A80 in China, neither did it announce the availability dates of any of the phones.

Samsung brings the upper-mid-range Galaxy A70 to India

Samsung is expanding the Galaxy A lineup in India by launching the recently-announced Galaxy A70 in the country. This is the fifth device in the Galaxy A 2019 lineup that the company has released in the subcontinent. So far, it has launched the Galaxy A10, A20, A30, and A50 in the country. Until the Galaxy A80 comes to India, which is set to happen next month, the A70 will be the most premium Galaxy A 2019 device in the company’s lineup.

The Galaxy A70 comes with a 6.7-inch FHD+ (1080X2400) Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, Snapdragon 675 octa-core chipset, 6 GB RAM, 128 GB internal storage, microSD slot, 32 MP selfie camera, triple-camera system on the back, Samsung Pay, a 4,500mAh battery with 25W fast charging, USB Type-C port, in-display fingerprint reader, and Android Pie with One UI on top.

Complete Samsung Pay experience at a manageable price point

As evident from the specs, the large battery, 25W charging (same as the Galaxy S10 5G), high-resolution cameras, and Samsung Pay are the main attractions of the Galaxy A70. Most of the recent non-flagship Galaxy devices in India come with Samsung Pay Mini, which does not support credit and debit cards. This makes the A70 an appealing option for those who want the complete Samsung Pay experience at a manageable price point.

Unfortunately, in terms of design and build quality, the Galaxy A70 is nothing special. It looks similar to other recent Galaxy A models and features the same glossy-plastic build. It will be available in white, blue, and black in a single 6GB/128GB storage configuration for INR 28,990 (~$418). It will be available for purchase from Samsung’s offline and online partners starting May 1. Interested buyers can also pre-book the device between April 20 and April 30. Pre-orders come with an offer to buy Samsung U Flex Bluetooth earphones worth INR 3,799 for INR 999.

Verizon releases April 2019 security patch for the Galaxy Note 9

The Galaxy Note 9 started receiving the April 2019 security patch update last week in several markets across the globe. The latest security maintenance release is now being rolled out for this device by Verizon. The largest mobile carrier in the United States has now released the April 2019 security patch for the Galaxy Note 9.

Verizon is rolling out this new firmware update for the Galaxy Note 9 over-the-air. It’s going to take some time before the OTA download is available for all of its customers with the Samsung phablet.

Verizon Galaxy Note 9 gets April 2019 security patch

The April 2019 security patch brings fixes for a handful of critical and high-risk vulnerabilities discovered in the Android operating system. It also patches 15 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items. These are the vulnerabilities that were discovered in Samsung’s own software.

Verizon is rolling out firmware version N960USQS1CSD1 for the Galaxy Note 9 on its network. It doesn’t bring much in the way of new features as the update is meant to apply the latest security maintenance release only. As previously mentioned, it may take a while before all users get this update. The firmware in question is already available for download from our database.

Other carriers in the country may soon follow suit now and release the April 2019 security patch on their networks as well.

Galaxy Fold could launch in India as soon as next month

The Samsung Galaxy Fold will launch in India next month, according to a new report. There’s no word on an official release date or how much the foldable device will cost in the region, though — all that’s been alleged is that it will be available to pre-order sometime in the second half of the month.

To be clear, there’s no evidence whatsoever to support the claim. From what we can tell, it’s been drawn up based on public knowledge, factoring in Samsung Mobile CEO DJ Koh’s recent revelation that the Galaxy Fold will in fact launch in India and the forthcoming release date of the Galaxy A80.

Take from that what you will, but we aren’t in the business of making assumptions, so we’d like to reiterate that the report in no way, shape or form serves as confirmation that the foldable handset will hit the shelves in India in May. It’s more of a rumor at this point than anything else.

Galaxy Fold is available to pre-order in the US, though

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Fold went up for pre-order in the US last week. Market response was overwhelming to say the least, with Samsung having to halt reservations within a matter of days after demand far surpassed its internal expectations. Local carrier AT&T, however, is still taking orders.

Massive Galaxy Buds update rolling out, here are the details

Your new Galaxy Buds are in for a treat thanks to a new update Samsung is rolling out for its AKG-tuned wireless earbuds. Perhaps the most important part of the new update is the touchpad improvements for when you double or triple-tap the touchpad, along with an option to select whether you want to permanently or temporarily enable the Ambient sound feature (which lets you be aware of your surroundings while listening to music or other media on the earbuds) with a long press on the touchpad.

And if you’re not fond of touch controls, the update adds the ability to control various functions on the earbuds through Bixby. For example, you can ask Bixby to enable or disable Ambient sound, change to a different equalizer setting, lock the touchpad, and tell you the battery status. However, Bixby control is only possible with US English and Korean at the moment, so if you have Bixby Voice set to use another language, you’re out of luck. Hopefully, new updates will bring support for other languages in the near future.

To update your Galaxy Buds, open the Galaxy Wearable app while the buds are connected to your smartphone. A pop-up should appear if an update is available for your Galaxy Buds. You can also manually check for updates by going to the Galaxy Buds section of the app and then tapping About earbuds at the bottom of the screen, followed by Update earbuds software, and finally, Download and install. You can update through your Windows or Mac PC as well by using the Galaxy Buds Manager program.

Latest Galaxy M20 software update improves charging performance

Samsung has released a new software update for the Galaxy M20 in India to improve the phone’s charging performance. The changelog for the update doesn’t go into specifics, nor have we heard anything about charging issues on the device, but if anyone had been facing any on their M20, this update will hopefully get things back to normal. In fact, considering Samsung has pushed this update with last month’s security patch, the charging improvements are likely serious enough for the company to have rushed the update out the door.

The Galaxy M20 has received impressive software support since its launch, and it has also proven to be a massive hit for Samsung in the Indian market thanks to a combination of impressive features and an attractive price tag. One of those features is the 5,000 mAh battery under the hood and another is fast charging support, which was never seen on a budget Galaxy smartphone before the Galaxy M20. Samsung later launched the Galaxy M30 with a couple of upgrades over the M20, including a Super AMOLED display and a third rear camera.

If you own a Galaxy M20, you can download the update from the Settings » Software update menu by tapping Download updates manually. The update is a 73MB download over the air and comes with software version M205FDDU1ASD1.

Samsung talks about Galaxy S10’s eco-friendly packaging in new infographic

Since the release of the Galaxy S10, all the focus, unsurprisingly, has been on how it looks on the outside and what it packs on the inside. It is therefore easy to forget other notable improvements, like plastic-free packaging, that it brings to the table. In a new blog post, Samsung is reminding its users about the steps it has taken to make the Galaxy S10 packaging environment-friendly.

Samsung says it has opted for eco-friendly materials instead of plastics and vinyl for the Galaxy S10’s packaging. It also redesigned the box and its interiors to use as fewer resources as possible. Packaging for previous devices contained a box-covering sleeve, a holder tray and a bottom box, whereas the new packaging includes just the bottom box.

Samsung’s first plastic-free packaging design

The Galaxy S10’s box and manual use recycled paper and are printed with soy ink. The included charger’s matte finish is also an outcome of this eco-friendly approach, as a glossy finish apparently requires a plastic protective film. As a result of all this and more, the Galaxy S10’s packaging is plastic-free and environmentally sustainable. And while the company hasn’t mentioned it, it is using similar environment-friendly packaging for devices in the Galaxy M and 2019 Galaxy A lineup as well.

“From the Galaxy S10 line’s design stage, we were deeply committed to developing eco-friendly packaging materials. We will continue to support international efforts to make our planet more sustainable by utilizing eco-friendly materials in more products,” Ilseob Baek, Vice President of Reliability Group, Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics.

Sprint now rolling out April security update for the Galaxy S9

Sprint has started distributing a new firmware update for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, bundling all of the patches included in this month’s security release — addressing five critical and dozens of high-risk vulnerabilities in the Android OS and 15 that are exclusive to Samsung’s firmware.

The move comes less than 24 hours after the carrier began rolling out a similar update for the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10e and Galaxy S10+ in the region; though, unlike this latest release for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, it bundles an additional fix for an LTE issue that’s been troubling the Galaxy S10.

Just like usual, the upgrade is being pushed out in stages. To see if it’s available for your handset, head into Settings, navigate to Software Update, then select Download and install, or you can always download the firmware from our database — using the links below — for manual flashing.

Elsewhere, Samsung has been working around the clock to ensure a timely roll-out of the April security release for unlocked handsets. It touched down on the Galaxy A5 (2017), Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy J5 Prime on April 17 and before that the Galaxy Note 9, among others.

Samsung Email accessed your Gmail account? There’s no need to panic

Samsung is aware of a frustrating bug that’s notifying Gmail users that Samsung Email has been authorized to access and control their Gmail account, assuring them that the alert is not fraudulent, but rather believed to have been triggered as a result of Google enacting a new security protocol.

The firm told Android Police that it’s working closely with Big G to identify the root of the problem and will be distributing a fix in due course. Rest assured, though: the notification is genuine and your device hasn’t been compromised, so there’s no need to break into a frantic state of hysteria.

There’s a good chance hackers will be looking to capitalize on the exploit now that it’s made the mainstream media, however. With that in mind, we’d recommend heading over to the Google Account Dashboard to verify that the email alert is in fact real, should you happen to receive it.

But how do you discern whether your account has been compromised? Well, if the IP address used to sign in to your account corresponds to a different geographic location to your own, there’s a chance it has been. And if that’s the case, you’ll need to use the Account Dashboard to secure it.

Samsung is encouraging users to disregard the notification

Samsung has assured us that there’s no reason to take action on the email; though it’s instructing anyone wanting to secure their Google Account to refrain from clicking any links within the email, just in case the one they’ve received is fraudulent. All changes should be made using a computer.

Samsung sold 2 million new Galaxy A phones in India within 40 days of launch

Samsung recently launched the revamped Galaxy A series in India, with an aim to make it the biggest brand in the country. While the new Galaxy A phones are now available to purchase in many countries, Samsung hopes they will contribute over $4 billion in revenues by the end of 2019 in India alone. And it seems the company is well on track to achieve that target. It has already sold over 2 million units of the latest Galaxy A smartphones in India.

Samsung is confident of surpassing the $4 billion target

Ranjivjit Singh, Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President of Samsung India, recently revealed that the company shipped a total of two million units of the three Galaxy A phones – A10, A30 and A50 – during the 40-day period starting March 1. The revenue turnover from the sales was $500 million, which Singh believes is “a record for any brand in the industry”.

With more A series phones arriving soon, Samsung feels confident that it can surpass the target of $4 billion. “When the rest of the portfolio in the ‘A’ series becomes available we are sure of not only achieving, but exceeding our target,” Singh said, speaking to Indian publication IANS.

Samsung launched three Galaxy A phones, the Galaxy A10, Galaxy A30 and the Galaxy A50, in India last month. It recently added the Galaxy A20 to the lineup. Next in the pipeline is the Galaxy A70, which launches in the country next week in the Rs 25,000-Rs 30,000 (~$360-$430) bracket. The Galaxy A80 will arrive in India in May. It’ll be priced in the Rs 45,000-Rs 50,000 (~$650-$720) bracket. Samsung had earlier said that it’ll launch at least one Galaxy A phone every month until June this year.

Samsung has been under tremendous pressure from Chinese rivals in India. The company lost the crown of India’s biggest smartphone brand to Xiaomi last year. Hopes of revival now rest on the new Galaxy A and Galaxy M series phones. And if early signs are anything to go by, Samsung is well on way to it.
