Samsung becomes No. 1 brand in Asia once again

Samsung has maintained its number one position among global brands in Asia for five years in a row. According to the Campaign Asia-Pacific 2016 Asia’s Top 1000 Brands report, Samsung beat out other multinational firms like Apple, Nestle, and Panasonic.

The Hong Kong-based market research publisher Campaign Asia-Pacific stated in its report, which was based on an annual survey, that Samsung is the most desirable brand among consumers across thirteen key regional markets across the Asia-Pacific region.

The report also mentions that Apple advanced two positions to the number two position. Samsung has released some impressive products over the past one year including the stylish Gear S2 smartwatch, impressive SUHD TVs, and the stellar Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.

Samsung’s SmartCam HD Plus security camera gains cloud storage option

The biggest weakness of Samsung’s SmartCam Plus HD Plus security camera got fixed yesterday as the company released an option to save video surveillance files to the cloud. Owners now have an option of subscribing to SmartCloud and save video files directly to cloud storage instead of relying on the SD card inside the camera.

Because we leverage the computing power of the cloud, we can deploy more sophisticated, proprietary algorithms that show marked improvements, particularly in removing false positives resulting from atmospheric conditions,” said a Hanwha Techwin spokesperson. The video footage is encrypted while it is being uploaded or downloaded from the cloud to prevent snooping.

SmartCam HD Plus owners can try out a 15-day SmartCloud trial for free after which they can subscribe to one of three paid plans – $50/yr to store up to five days of continuous video, $70/yr for seven days of storage, and $200/yr to save up to 21 days from the company’s website. Users can also subscribe to monthly plans of $5, $8, or $20.

Hanwha Techwin America (the Hanwha Group) acquired Samsung Techwin America, which makes SmartCam range of security cameras. However, the former agreed to keep Samsung’s name in its products. The company has also enabled continuous recording and improved camera’s motion-detection feature.

Samsung will not release 3D TVs in 2016

3D was the next big thing in the television industry a few years ago, and 3D TV became a whole new category. Now, 3D is just another feature with major brands including Samsung and Vizio pulling their 3D TVs out of the market.

An anonymous source at Samsung has mentioned that the TVs released by the company in 2016 will not even support 3D. Some 2015 models from the company will still support 3D, and so will some models from Sony and LG. The company is moving towards virtual reality with its Gear VR headset and 360-degree camera, the Gear 360.

Samsung has focussed on releasing more 4K SUHD TVs with HDR capabilities in 2016, and the company is expected to bring second-generation Quantum Dot displays that will offer even better picture quality.

Verizon releases June security patch for the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+

Less than a week ago Verizon released the June security patch for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. It’s following up today with the same patch for the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ on its network. Verizon hasn’t always been this quick in sending out updates but this time around it has sent the patch out for these devices within a fortnight of it being released by Google.

Software version MMB29K.N920VVZW2BPF2 and MMB29K.G928VVZW2BPF2 is now being rolled out by Verizon for the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ respectively. The changelog is quite simple: “The current software update gives you the most up to date Android™ security patch on your device.” Samsung has already detailed its June security patch which includes the latest security improvements from Google as well as nine Samsung-specific bug fixes.

Latest Galaxy S7 update brings June security patch and camera fixes

Samsung is rolling out a new software update for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge in multiple regions across the globe. Word of the report first came in from the United Kingdom. It brings several camera fixes for the handsets as well as updates the device to the June security patch. That’s an important addition for users in the UK as they never got the May security patch.

An occasional cover recognition issue has been fixed with this update. Camera improvements include fixes for an issue where initial video playback flickered after recording and an intermittent issue where the camera couldn’t be used when opened from the lock screen on devices with the S View cover attached. The update weighs in at 329MB in Europe but in other regions, the update is around 73MB while having the same changes. That’s nothing to be too concerned about, though, just keep an eye out for the update notification and install it when it becomes available in your region.

Samsung shows off its curved monitors at EA Play

Samsung has been making its presence felt in gaming circles this week. It was present at the E3 2016 convention to show off its mobile gaming and virtual reality efforts. The E3 convention is not open to the public so to bring fans into the action Electronic Arts has conducted its own convention, and Samsung made sure to put in an appearance by showcasing its curved gaming monitors.

The inaugural EA Play convention enabled fans to preview its latest games and interact with members of the industry. EA Games demonstrated its latest titles including Titanfall 2 and FIFA 17 on Samsung’s CF591 curved gaming monitor. The enhanced presentation was enjoyed by both gamers and developers who liked the gaming experience that curved monitors offer. Samsung’s monitors were also installed in demo stations so fans could get a good idea of how curved monitors are well suited to gaming. Samsung’s CF591, CF391, and CF390 curved gaming monitors have support for AMD FreeSync Technology Over HDMI for synchronizing screen refresh rates with AMD graphics card frame rates to reduce stutter, input latency, and lag.

Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 (2016) receives radio certification in South Korea

Earlier this month, an unidentified Samsung-branded tablet carrying the model number SM-T230NW appeared in a listing on India’s import/export database, Zauba. At the time, it was unclear what this mystery device was or if it would ever see the light of day. However, an identical slate has today been granted radio certification in South Korea bearing the branding Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 (2016), which means that we’re looking at a successor to the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 that was originally introduced back in May 2014.

Thankfully when the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 (2016) was shipped to India for testing, a specification sheet was stored in the online database, so we have a rough idea of what we’re looking at with regards to internals. The tablet is expected to pack a 7-inch Full HD display, a 1.7GHz octa-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 16/32GB of expandable internal storage and a 4,000mAh battery. It’s also believed that the device will ship running Android 6.0.1 skinned with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface.

Unfortunately, that’s all the details we have on the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 (2016) for now, but be sure to check back regularly for more information as it’s perfectly possible that we could see an official announcement sometime over the course of the next couple of weeks as radio certification is one of the last tests a device needs to pass before it can be released in Asia, Europe, North America and South America.

Should Samsung make the switch or is it better off with Android? Vote and let us know what you think in the comments section below.

As with UHD TV, Samsung looks to herald upcoming UHD mobile standard with Tizen 3.0

HDTV was the standard for a long time, but 1080p smartphone displays (Full HD resolution) ushered in an era where consumers have expected their TVs to at least compete with, if not rival, their smartphone displays. Now, though, it appears as though an international alliance is all set to unveil a new mobile standard that will catch up with Samsung’s own SUHD TVs and the current TV-viewing standard: the Ultra HD mobile standard.

The Ultra High Definition Alliance, or UHDA, is set to unveil Ultra HD mobile as the next content-viewing standard for mobile devices next year. Currently, in the TV sector, Samsung is utilizing its own Quantum Dot LCD TVs against its fellow Korean rival LG, while LG is looking to OLED as the best in TV viewing and streaming content standards.

Samsung has been working with US broadcasters to implement UHD TV as the new viewing standard and has decided to skip OLED TVs in favor of Quantum Dot LCD TVs that not only provide the opportunity to tweak pixels and match the comparable brightness of OLED displays but are also far more inexpensive for consumers (after all, companies don’t develop products for the sake of throwing money away). The UHDA has awarded Samsung premium certification for its 2016 SUHD TVs, and video experts have preferred Samsung’s Quantum Dot TVs due to their incredible output of video content.

In bypassing OLED TVs, Samsung is said to be prepping the release of QLED TVs in 2018 that will not only combine Quantum Dot and OLED technology (which matches current OLED TVs) but also have longer life cycles and lower production costs. As Samsung leads the way in Quantum Dot LCD TVs, the Korean giant is also one large mile ahead of the game with its upcoming mobile Tizen 3.0 update that is already compatible with the soon-to-arrive Ultra HD mobile standard. Tizen 3.0 is rumored for a release on Samsung’s Z series in September.

A new report from research firm IHS reveals that Samsung Display has led global AMOLED sales in the first quarter of 2016. Research shows that Samsung remained ahead of the competition in global sales of small and mid-sized Active Matrix Organic-Light Emitting Diode displays. In terms of sales, Samsung Display accounted for 30.6 percent of the global market share.

Japan Display follows in second place with 17.1 percent of the market while LG Display is third with 12.9 percent market share. In terms of shipments in the same time frame, Samsung’s AMOLED displays accounted for almost 14.4 percent of the global AMOLED display market. Demand for AMOLED displays continues to rise as more manufacturers turn to this technology. Things could further improve down the road for Samsung Display as it’s expected to supply the bulk of the panels for Apple’s first OLED iPhone.

‘Smart Glow’ is Samsung’s alternative to the notification LED

Samsung is going to introduce an alternative to the notification LED soon called “Smart Glow,” it’s going to be an illuminated ring around the camera lens on the back which lights up for notifications. Users will be able to set up the feature to display priority alerts about incoming messages or calls, usage alerts, battery status, and more.

It won’t just be limited to replacing the notifications LED. It’s also going to help users take pictures of themselves with the rear camera. Since that can prove to be a bit tricky as opposed to taking a selfie with a front camera, the Smart Glow ring will illuminate when it detects the face and the photo will then be taken in a few seconds. Samsung is expected to introduce Smart Glow in the upcoming Galaxy J2 (2016) which will be launched in India. It’s unclear at this point in time whether this feature will make it to flagship handsets like the Galaxy Note 7.
