Galaxy S21 outspeeds Pixel 6 Pro in wired charging and fingerprint recognition

The Galaxy S21 series got a new rival yesterday when the Pixel 6 Pro went on sale as per Google’s launch schedule. The Pixel 6 Pro and the Galaxy S21 trio of smartphones share a few similarities and Samsung-made components, but even so, they’re widely different.

Take battery life and performance, for example. Both the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Google Pixel 6 Pro are powered by 5,000mAh batteries, but the Pixel phone supports 30W fast charging, whereas the Galaxy S21 Ultra is limited to 25W.

These on-paper numbers don’t really mean much in the real world, though. You could say that the Pixel 6 Pro has faster charging even though it’s cheaper than the Galaxy S21 Ultra, but surprisingly, you’d be wrong.

Galaxy S21 Ultra beats Pixel 6 Pro in charging speed test

Our colleague Ben of Lover of Tech recently did a side-by-side comparison with the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Pixel 6 Pro to determine which phone charges faster. Remember: both phones have the same battery capacity but the Pixel 6 Pro supports faster charging, so you’d think that Google’s latest flagship should come out ahead of the Galaxy S21 Ultra in this challenge. But that’s not how it went down.

By the 15 minute mark, the Galaxy S21 Ultra had 30% battery charge versus the Pixel 6 Pro’s 24% charge. This advantage compounded, and by the time Samsung’s flagship reached 100% charge in 1 hour and 6 minutes, the Pixel 6 Pro was sitting at 84% charge. Galaxy S21 series authenticates fingerprints faster than Pixel 6 Pro

Aside from faster charging, the Galaxy S21 Ultra — and indeed the rest of the Galaxy S21 series — also appears to be superior in terms of biometric authentication speed.

The Pixel 6 Pro has an optical in-display fingerprint sensor, while the Galaxy S21 lineup uses a sonic-based sensor from Qualcomm. When placed side-by-side, it’s very obvious that the Galaxy S21 delivers a superior experience with noticeable faster and more accurate fingerprint authentication. In conclusion, this goes to show that on-paper specifications aren’t always everything. Powerful hardware doesn’t mean much if it isn’t put to good use through software and optimization, and it sure looks like Samsung did its homework with the Galaxy S21.

Confirmed: Galaxy S21 FE launch is planned for CES 2022

Had Samsung followed a yearly launch schedule for its new Fan Edition smartphones, the Galaxy S21 FE would’ve been official by now. But as we all know, the Galaxy S21 FE missed its opportunity to be revealed at Galaxy Unpacked and Unpacked 2, and recent rumors hint at a January 2022 release.

We’re being told that Samsung wants to release the Galaxy S21 FE in the first month of 2022, much like we reported earlier in October. But the phone won’t be launched on January 11, as another recent rumor had claimed. Instead, we’re hearing that the Galaxy S21 FE will be announced a few days earlier than that.

The Galaxy S21 FE is coming to CES 2022 in January

We’ve been told that Samsung wants to launch the Galaxy S21 FE at CES 2020. The next CES is scheduled for January 5-8, and as usual, it will take place in Las Vegas.

It’s been years since Samsung announced a new smartphone at CES. The event is usually reserved for consumer electronics and mobile products that aren’t always heading for mass production.

With that in mind, the Galaxy S21 FE might not get much competition at CES, and even if Samsung won’t host a big launch event, the upcoming Fan Edition smartphone should still get plenty of spotlight in Las Vegas.

Do keep in mind that preliminary rumors are subject to change, and you can never be too sure about what Samsung is planning until it spills the beans. Things are even more uncertain now given the global semiconductor shortage. But as far as we can tell, as of right now, the Galaxy S21 FE launch at CES 2022 is virtually confirmed.

Exclusive: Galaxy S22 launch will take place in early February

New contradicting rumors regarding the launch of the Galaxy S22 series next year have emerged. A recent report states that Samsung will open Galaxy S22 pre-orders in the second week of February, while on the other hand, a follow-up rumor claims that the Galaxy S22 will launch in January. So, which version is correct? We can never be too sure, but it’s time for us to weigh in.

@UniverseIce’s latest rumor claims that although an exact date isn’t known, the series of flagships “may be released in the last week of January,” which would correspond to previous reports on the matter.

How likely is a January release for the Galaxy S22?

Quite unlikely, in fact. As of right now, based on new information we received, we’re confident that the Galaxy S22 lineup won’t launch in January, and instead, Samsung plans to introduce the series in early February. At least, as confident as one can be given the current date. Of course, release dates are still subject to change, especially given the ongoing semiconductor shortage and unpredictable market climate, but in light of new data, we wouldn’t bet on a January release as of this moment.

Galaxy S flagship fans will have to wait a while longer before they can pre-order. However, a February release should give Samsung plenty of room to market its foldable phones more aggressively around the holiday shopping season. Likewise, it could make way for the release of the elusive Galaxy S21 FE early next year.

Galaxy S21 Ultra vs iPhone 13 Pro Max camera comparison: Which flagship is better?

The Apple vs Samsung rivalry has been going on for more than a decade. Every year the two brands release their flagship smartphones, fans all over the world wait to see which phone comes out on top in terms of design, performance, and battery life. This year, Samsung’s best camera smartphone is the Galaxy S21 Ultra, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max is Apple’s best smartphone ever.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 108MP primary camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, and a 10MP telephoto camera with 10x optical zoom. The iPhone 13 Pro Max has more modest camera specifications, including a 12MP primary camera with sensor-shift OIS, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.

At the front, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 40MP camera with autofocus, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a 12MP selfie camera. We had a chance to test both devices to see which one has a better camera in various conditions.

Starting with the primary camera, the Galaxy S21 Ultra captures images with slightly more details. You can see more information in the sky, thanks to a wider dynamic range. The iPhone 13 Pro Max’s primary camera chooses warmer colors, which helps in certain situations. Its images also have slightly lower noise levels.

The ultrawide camera on the Galaxy S21 Ultra is superior as well. Its images are sharper throughout the frame and have more details. Dynamic range is wider, too.

Images captured using the telephoto camera on the iPhone 13 Pro Max have marginally lower noise but also lower details. Both phones perform really well, and unless you see the images side-by-side, you won’t notice any real difference between the two.

Of course, the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s dedicated 10x optical zoom camera offers much higher details in images compared to the iPhone’s 10x digital zoom photos. You can clearly spot the difference when looking at the car’s number plate and the leaves above the car.

Both phones can use their ultrawide cameras, featuring autofocus, to capture sharper macro shots. There are color differences, with the iPhone generally choosing warmer tones and the Galaxy S21 Ultra preferring cooler tones. Macro shots from the iPhone 13 Pro Max have lower noise, which could be due to its wider aperture that lets in more light. In the second macro shot comparison, the iPhone 13 Pro Max captured accurate colors but lost in terms of details.

Both smartphones allow using wide-angle and telephoto cameras to capture images in portrait mode. However, the iPhone 13 Pro Max struggled to recognize the subject while using the wide-angle camera. We had to try multiple times to capture a good portrait image. The Galaxy S21 Ultra was much better to work with while using the primary camera for capturing portrait shots.

Both phones offer excellent separation between the subject and the background. The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s image shows a higher amount of background blur, but the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s bokeh effect looks more natural. In terms of skin tones, neither phone was accurate. The iPhone made my skin appear a bit too warm, while the Galaxy S21 Ultra chose a cooler skin tone. My actual skin tone is somewhere between the two. Another thing to note here is that the iPhone captured slightly more details on my face, but you’ll only notice that if you pixel-peep.

Now, let us focus on the front-facing camera quality. Once again, the iPhone 13 Pro Max chooses warmer color tones. Selfies from the Galaxy S21 Ultra have more details, more accurate colors, and a natural background blur. Samsung also lets you capture portrait images using the wide-angle view of the selfie camera, something you can’t do with the iPhone. In the portrait mode, the iPhone retains a bit more facial details compared to Samsung’s phone.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s ultrawide camera clearly offers higher details, lower noise, and a wider dynamic range in low-light conditions. Even the corners of the image are sharper when compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The primary cameras on both smartphones are equally good in low-light conditions. The only noticeable difference is in terms of colors.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s 3x telephoto camera has lower noise and higher details. Leaves in the image shot using the iPhone 13 Pro Max look like water painting strokes.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra has the lead again in the 10x zoom comparison, thanks to its second telephoto camera. You can clearly see higher details on the leaves and the text on the ‘Parking Zone’ board. Noise is lower, too. And colors are more accurate.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s ultrawide camera wins again while using the Night mode. We can see the same traits, including lower noise, higher details, and higher sharpness across the frame.

Both devices capture equally good images using their primary cameras in the Night mode. It’s hard to find a noticeable difference between the two.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max used its primary camera in the 3x zoom mode when the Night mode was used. So, the Galaxy S21 Ultra managed to beat it in almost every aspect. The latter’s result had lower noise, higher details, and a wider dynamic range. You can clearly see the separation between the leaves. The text on the cart is clearly visible compared to the shot from the iPhone.

Once again, the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s 10x digital is no match for the Galaxy S21 Ultra in the Night mode. And that’s because it is still digitally cropping in from the primary sensor. The Galaxy S21 Ultra used its 10x telephoto camera, capturing much higher details and better colors. Noise is lower, too. You can clearly see the pink flowers in the image captured using the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Those flowers are entirely missing in the image captured using the iPhone.

In low-light conditions, the iPhone 13 Pro Max captures better colors using its front-facing camera. However, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has lower noise. The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s images have lower noise and higher details on the face in portrait mode and night mode. However, the iPhone 13 Pro Max still wins when it comes to colors.

We also tested the macro mode in low-light conditions. The iPhone wins both in terms of colors, details, and noise levels.

So, which phone has a better camera?

It is hard to declare a clear winner here. Both phones capture really good images in various scenarios using their primary cameras. The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s ultrawide camera is better in both daylight and low-light conditions, capturing higher details and better sharpness across the frame. The Galaxy S21 Ultra also wins in zoom performance. The iPhone 13 Pro Max is slightly better at capturing portrait images. It also records cleaner and smoother videos in low-light conditions.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max was launched just last month, and Apple still doesn’t have a clear lead in the camera department. We are proud to see that the Galaxy S21 Ultra still wins in many scenarios despite it being eight months old. Its camera setup is more flexible than the iPhone 13 Pro Max. If you are thinking of buying the Galaxy S21 Ultra, it is still a great high-end smartphone and offers excellent all-round performance. Samsung will manufacture a 5nm AI chip capable of stock transactions

Samsung and two domestic startups have joined forces to develop and manufacture a neural network processing unit (NPU) capable of conducting AI-powered transactions of stocks.

The design of the AI chip was outsourced by Qraft Technologies to fabless startup Rebellions. The latter company was founded in 2020 by engineers from SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, but it’s fabless, meaning it designs chips but doesn’t have the necessary facilities to manufacture them.

Qraft Technologies and Rebellions came to Samsung for the AI chip’s manufacturing. The Korean tech giant reportedly accepted their proposal, and as a result, Samsung will be responsible for manufacturing the AI chip using its 5nm processes.

Predicting Tesla’s stock prices through AI

Qraft Technologies uses only AI to operate four ETFs (exchange-traded funds) on the New York Stock Exchange, and the startup became known for its excellent predictions of Tesla’s stock prices. Since the start of 2021, its four AI-powered ETFs have posted returns of 16.21%-19.85%.

However, the startup is now facing limitations due to computational hurdles. The company wants to expand its scope, but certain problems require higher computational power. Qraft Technologies wants to address these limitations through its new AI chip manufactured by Samsung.

Rumor has it that the AI chip in question will quadruple AI computational speed and reduce power consumption to one-tenth of Qraft Technologies’ ongoing solution. The chip is expected to enter production next year.

Samsung’s pleased with its bet on foldables and will double down next year

Samsung’s strategy to put foldable phones on the map appears to have succeeded, and the company is now looking forward to growing the segment even further in 2022. Earlier today, the company said that foldable smartphone sales should grow significantly next year, though the company didn’t share any graphs or exact figures that would closely reflect its expectations.

According to an SCMP report citing Samsung VP Kim Sung-Koo during today’s earnings report, the company believes it has “succeeded in starting and leading the mainstreaming of foldable phones in the market.” So, foldables are here to stay.

Samsung’s pushback on the Galaxy Note series betrays confidence in foldables

H2 is one of the most important periods for Samsung because it faces strong opposition from Apple and its new iPhone models every year. Up until now, the Galaxy Note series held Apple’s H2 sales figures in check, but as we all know, no new Galaxy Note model got unveiled at Galaxy Unpacked in August.

The Galaxy S21 FE also missed its opportunity, and it’s looking more and more like Samsung will unveil it early next year. With that being said, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 are the company’s main bets against Apple and the iPhone 13 series for the remainder of 2021, and they seem to be doing pretty well in Samsung’s eyes.

This year, the foldable device market grew approximately 3x faster than it did a year ago, and Samsung will reportedly continue pushing foldable display technology to the foreground next year. Market watchers expect the Korean tech giant’s share in the foldable market to top a whopping 75% in 2023.

Time will tell if Samsung’s decision to hold back on the Note series and put its eggs in the foldable basket will pay off in the long run. S Pen enthusiasts were disappointed by this decision, but as far as Samsung’s mobile business is concerned, Galaxy Note sales weren’t growing any higher, so the company had to look at other revenue avenues. Needless to say, foldable devices potentially have a much higher ceiling than the Galaxy Note series ever did.

Samsung Galaxy devices eligible for the Android 12L update

Samsung has singlehandedly been advancing the cause of Android tablets. The best Samsung tablets are also some of the best Android tablets on the market. It’s also the only company that’s selling Android-powered foldable smartphones at scale. Samsung devices stand to benefit from any improvements in software that Google can deliver.

Google is doing just that with Android 12L. It’s not an entirely new version of Android. Android 12L basically delivers an enhanced feature set to foldable smartphones and tablets. Google is itself calling Android 12L a “feature drop for Android 12.”

The entire idea is to make Android 12 better on devices with larger screens. There’s an improved UI that includes a new two-column layout for the notification shade, changes to the lock screen, home screen and more. Multitasking will be more powerful with a new task bar at the bottom that allows for quick and easy app switching.

The Samsung Android 12L update isn’t going to arrive before 2022. Google has confirmed that Android 12L will be launched early next year. Samsung has quite a few devices that will be eligible for this update. It goes without saying that all future foldables and tablets will support it as well.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Tab series will likely be the only ones to get Android 12L. Even though this feature drop is meant for foldables, it won’t be suited to the tall and narrow foldable panel of the Galaxy Z Flip series.
