AT&T might release Marshmallow for the Galaxy Note 5 tomorrow and on March 14 for the Galaxy S6

Google may have just released the developer preview of Android N but Samsung flagships have still not been updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow in most countries. Major carriers in the United States are gradually releasing said update for last year’s flagships, and it appears that AT&T is going to release Marshmallow for the Galaxy Note 5 tomorrow and for the Galaxy S6 on March 14.

Multiple AT&T customers have reached out to the carrier’s representatives and they’ve been told to look out for the update on the Galaxy Note 5 tomorrow. The customer reps have also mentioned March 14 and March 15 as the release dates for this update on the Galaxy S6. Since it’s the second largest mobile carrier in the United States there’s no doubt that millions of people are looking forward to this update, and if the information from its representatives is anything to go by, then the updates will soon arrive for AT&T customers.

Samsung starts selling the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge worldwide

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge last month and it didn’t take long for pre-orders to open. In some markets, customers who pre-ordered their units have already received them, even though March 11 was selected as the official release date for the new flagship smartphones. It is March 11 today, which means that Samsung has now started selling the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge worldwide.

The company’s carrier and retail partners will now start selling the handset through retail stores across 60 countries. Over the coming weeks, the new flagships will be released in more countries. One incentive that retail customers will miss out on is the free Gear VR headset that Samsung provided to everyone who placed a pre-order. Check with your local retailer or carrier to see if the new handsets are available in your market. If you’re still not sure about purchasing the Galaxy S7 or the Galaxy S7 edge, check out our detailed review which will make that decision easier for you.

Samsung lists the Galaxy S7′s main features in new TV ad

Now that it’s done with unveiling the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge, Samsung can get down to the business of selling its new flagship smartphones. The marketing push is well and truly underway. Samsung has just released a new TV ad for its new flagship which lists all of the main features. The ad also raises an important question, is there any other smartphone out there that’s capable of doing all this while looking this good?

The ad starts off by mentioning the amazing camera capabilities of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge before moving to Samsung Pay, expandable memory, water resistance as well as its support for the Gear 360 and the Gear VR. The device itself gets plenty of screen time throughout the one-minute spot and I’m sure that many will agree that it looks absolutely beautiful. With pre-orders of the new flagships exceeding expectations, it’s in Samsung’s best interests to continue the marketing push to ensure that the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge make a much-needed contribution to improving the fortunes of its smartphone business.

Samsung Pay now available for the Galaxy S7 on Verizon

Verizon started shipping pre-ordered units of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge a few days ago. Customers who got their units weren’t happy to find out that the Samsung Pay app was missing even though Verizon already supports the service on previous flagships. It wasn’t immediately clear why the app was missing from the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge on Verizon units but the carrier soon confirmed that the app was undergoing testing and that it would arrive soon.

Big Red has followed through on its promise. The app arrives just before the official launch date of the new handsets. Testing has been completed and the app is now available for download on the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge on Verizon. Simply head over to the Play Store and download the app on your handset to make payments on the go with Samsung Pay.

Exclusive: Samsung working on Z1 (2016) Tizen phone (SM-Z150)

Samsung has upgraded a lot of its existing budget smartphones this year under the 2016 tag (and also the high-end Galaxy A series), and the company is working on a similar upgrade to its first Tizen phone, the Z1. We can confirm that a Z1 (2016) is currently in the works (with model number SM-Z150), and that it could come with an AMOLED display like the Samsung Z3 and other recent budget Samsung handsets. That’s about all the info we have on the phone, but we’re sure more details will crop up in the coming weeks.

As for the launch, the original Z1 came out at the beginning of 2015, so we’re already past the point a direct successor should have been released. But since Tizen is a new operating system, it’s possible Samsung isn’t following a regular schedule for new device launches. The Z1 and Z3 came out nine months apart, though it’s not likely the company will wait that long between the Z3 and the Z1 (2016). We’re not sure about the Z5 that we saw heading to India for testing recently – it might just have been the Z1 (2016), or it could be a Z3 successor that will also be unveiled in the near future.

We realize there is too little information to go on for the Z1 (2016), but then it is a part of our job here at SamMobile – report everything and anything we come across about Samsung devices. Here’s hoping the new Tizen phone brings noticeable upgrades over the original Z1, which we found to be an extremely poor showcase for a new mobile OS.

Themes Thursday: Here are a few good-looking themes from this week

Welcome to this week’s Themes Thursday! Samsung has released 63 themes for its Galaxy smartphones this week. However, we only liked four of those themes.

The [FIET] Sunshine In The Deep Blue theme has very elegant and consistent design, while the Morfix theme has colorful icons and material design language. The Strilex theme is good for people who like battery-saving black themes. If you like pastel colors, check out the Cooking Time theme.

Which theme did you like the most this week? Let us know in the comments section below.

Android N has been revealed, and Samsung flagships are still running Android 5.1 Lollipop

Yesterday, Google surprised everyone by revealing the next major iteration of Android a couple of months before the Google I/O developer conference, where new Android versions are usually unveiled. In fact, Android N’s reveal has come so early that smartphone manufacturers still haven’t updated existing devices to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which came out in October last year. Samsung started the rollout of Marshmallow for last year’s flagships in February, but sadly, those phones still haven’t received the update in many regions around the world.

Okay, so it’s not exactly Samsung’s fault that Google decided to show off Android N earlier than usual, but it does highlight the delays that plague the Korean giant’s software upgrade system. We have said it before that Samsung’s update policy is messed up, and we think it’s just inexcusable that the company is doing things so slow here in 2016. Android 6.0 has reached many Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note 5 units, but the rollout is still considerably limited given Marshmallow went official six months ago.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are beautiful results of seven years of Samsung’s hard work on its main flagship lineup, but the same level of advancement hasn’t taken place on the software front. Samsung was slow with optimizing and modernizing TouchWiz, and despite launching a public beta testing program the company has failed to complete the rollout of the latest version of Android for even its costliest phones. It worries us to think how long the mid-range and non-flagship Galaxy handsets will have to wait, and we can only hope Samsung will have changed things up by the time the final version of Android N is released.

Oculus Social brings social features to Samsung Gear VR, Facebook tie-in coming soon

Oculus has announced that it is bringing social networking features to Samsung’s virtual reality headset, the Gear VR. Starting tomorrow, Gear VR owners will be able to create profiles and connect with friends using their real or usernames. Considering that Oculus is owned by Facebook, this move wasn’t unexpected.

With ‘Oculus Social‘, Gear VR users will be able to like and share 360-degree videos on Facebook. Developers can also use an upcoming API from Oculus that will allow them to create social links. Users can play virtual reality games with their friends. Herobound: Gladiators is a multiplayer arena-style combat game, while Trivia is a four-player knowledge game. More such games with social roots are expected to hit the Oculus Store soon.

Users can connect their Oculus accounts with their Facebook profiles, but the company has mentioned on its blog that the feature is completely optional. Users can now leave reviews on Oculus store under their account names.

Sprint rolling out Android 6.0 update for the Samsung Galaxy S6

Among the top four US carriers, T-Mobile was the quickest to update the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge to Android 6.0 Marshmallow (while Verizon took the crown for the Note 5), and we have been waiting for the other three to follow in T-Mobile’s footsteps. Sprint is doing so today, with its Galaxy S6 beginning to receive Android 6.0.1 over the air. The Galaxy S6 edge is probably getting the update too, but we don’t have a final confirmation on that just yet.

Sprint’s version of the update (build number G920PVPU3CPB6) is the same as the one that has rolled out to the unlocked Galaxy S6. Google Now on Tap, Doze, and an updated TouchWiz interface are among the highlights, and the update also changes the vibration pattern for when you get calls and messages. As noted in the changelog, there is no decryption option in Android 6.0, so you might want to decrypt your phone (from the Settings » Lock screen and security » Other security settings menu) before installing the update or risk getting stuck with an encrypted device for its lifetime.

You should be getting a notification for the Marshmallow update on your Galaxy S6 sometime in the near future, and you can also check in the Settings » About device » Software update section to begin downloading the 1235.87 MB update immediately. If you have already upgraded to Android 6.0.1, let us know your experience in the comments below!

Cricket Wireless will offer the Galaxy S7 starting March 18

Cricket Wireless has confirmed that it’s going to offer the hottest Android smartphone available on the market right now to its customers starting March 18. It’s going to sell the Galaxy S7 for $649.99 in stores and online, customers who pick up a unit between March 18 and April 1 will receive the Gear VR free with a 6-game bundle. Customers won’t get color choices because Cricket Wireless only has the Galaxy S7 in Black Onyx.

Customers will be able to purchase the Galaxy S7 from more than 3,800 Cricket Wireless retail stores across the United States and also via the carrier’s website. It’s not going to offer the Galaxy S7 edge, at least for now. It’s not the only prepaid carrier that’s going to offer Samsung’s new flagship handset. Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile have both confirmed that they’ll start selling the Galaxy S7 in the near future.

‘Over the Horizon’ for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge gets a Dirty Loops remake

“Over the Horizon” is a signature Samsung Galaxy brand sound that many of you might be using as the ringer or the alarm. Samsung decided to spruce it up for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge so the Over the Horizon sound you find in the new flagships has received a remake from Swedish jazz-funk outfit Dirty Loops. Samsung says this is the “danciest, poppiest version yet” of Over the Horizon.

Samsung says that the sound is as adventurous and playful as Dirty Loops and “as creative and full of potential” as the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. Users will be able to listen to it in full via the Music app on their brand new Samsung flagship and if they haven’t got their hands on it yet, they can check out the video posted below to hear the new version of Over the Horizon which has also received a few lyrics for the first time. There are solos for drums, horns, keyboard and bass which make this a unique reinterpretation of a sound that has been synonymous with Galaxy devices for the past six years.
