Galaxy A22 5G’s processor and other details get revealed

Samsung is slowly releasing more affordable 5G smartphones. After the launch of the Galaxy A52 5GGalaxy A42 5G, and the Galaxy A32 5G, Samsung is getting prepared for the launch of the Galaxy A22 5G. We had first reported about the Galaxy A22 5G four months ago and had revealed that it could be the company’s cheapest 5G smartphone this year. Now, more details regarding the phone have been revealed.

The Galaxy A22 5G (SM-A226B) was found in Geekbench’s database. According to the information available in the listing, the smartphone runs Android 11 and comes equipped with MediaTek’s Dimensity 700 processor (MT6833V) and 6GB of RAM. The processor features two Cortex-A76 CPU cores clocked at 2.2GHz and six Cortex-A55 CPU cores clocked at 2.2GHz. The chip also features ARM Mali-G57 MC2 GPU running at 950MHz. It is a 5G chipset that supports both SA and NSA modes, and a peak download speed of up to 2.77Gbps.

The upcoming smartphone seems to have scored 562 points in Geekbench 5’s single-core test and 1,755 points in the multi-core test. Due to higher clock speeds, these scores are better than the Galaxy A32 5G’s Dimensity 720 processor. We can expect the Galaxy A22 5G to feature Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band GPS, and a USB Type-C port. In some markets, the phone will also be launched in a 4G variant (SM-A225F).

Going by previous leaks, the Galaxy A22 5G could be launched in the second half of 2021, and it could be priced somewhere around KRW 200,000 ($180) in South Korea. It could be available in four colors: gray, white, light green, and purple. Going by the leaked renders of the phone, it appears to feature a quad-camera setup, a side-mounted fingerprint reader, an Infinity-V display, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Galaxy Book Go will reportedly launch at Chromebook-level prices

Samsung’s ‘most powerful Galaxy’ device yet, i.e., a new Windows-powered laptop, is going to be unveiled in less than a week from now along with a couple of additional models. Samsung is planning to unveil three new game-changing notebooks next week, namely the Galaxy Book Go, the Galaxy Book Pro, and the Galaxy Book Pro 360. And now, alleged pricing details for two out of three upcoming models have emerged.

The Galaxy Book Go will be available at a very attractive price of just $349, according to new data shared by @rquandt and WinFuture. But despite the low, Chromebook-level price, the Galaxy Book Go is actually an ARM Windows 10 machine powered by the Snapdragon 7c chipset. The entry-level model will have only 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage though, and that’s something to keep in mind.

There will also be a Galaxy Book Go with 5G capabilities, boasting a more powerful Snapdragon 8cx chipset instead, but pricing details for this model remain unknown.

Intel-powered Galaxy Book Pro alleged launch prices

The Galaxy Book Pro will be powered by Intel CPUs instead of Qualcomm’s solutions, and the 15.6-inch model equipped with an Intel i5 (1135G7) chipset and 8GB of RAM + 512GB of storage will reportedly go on sale for $1,099.

The 15.6-inch variant equipped with an Intel i7 (1165G7) processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of memory will have a launch price of $1,299.

As for the smaller 13.3-inch Galaxy Book Pro, the source has revealed pricing details only for the Intel i7 model with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of built-in storage. This variant should hit the shelves for $1,199.

As yet, there’s no pricing info regarding the Galaxy Book Pro 360 but we’re bound to find out more soon enough. Stay tuned and don’t forget to join us for next week’s official announcement.

Samsung is back in the augmented reality game with new AR Canvas app

Samsung’s ambitions for the AR (Augmented Reality) scene may have seemed like they’ve been tempered last year when the company pulled the plug on the AR features built into Bixby Vision, but it turns out that Samsung hasn’t entirely given up on this technology. And it probably shouldn’t yet, seeing how several tech giants are now betting big on the future of AR.

On the contrary, Samsung SmartTag+ users can now take advantage of AR to find their possessions, and the company is also entertaining the idea of building AR glasses. And it turns out that the company has also quietly developed a new AR-centered app called AR Canvas.

The new app is available for download from the Galaxy Store, and it integrates some of the AR features that were available in Bixby Vision up until last year. Essentially, it allows users to create 3D augmented reality objects in their surroundings using the camera viewfinder and a set of AR tools.

AR Canvas lets users create augmented reality scenes using 3D text, brushes, stickers and more. The app also lets you scan real 3D objects (or 2D art) and create your own AR stickers out of them. The app uses the mobile device’s location capabilities to remember anchored AR objects and their location for 30 days.

AR Canvas is now in the beta stages of development but an early version is available for download via the Galaxy Store. The app is compatible with a variety of Galaxy phones, but don’t expect it to work with Samsung’s cheaper devices that don’t have enough processing power and / or good-enough sensors to provide a fluid and accurate augmented reality experience.

Can you guess which Samsung ad was top-ranked by consumers in 2020?

One of Samsung’s ads that were released last year was ranked 5th in Kantar’s Creative Effectiveness Awards, beating all other mobile brands in the process. The data insight company has analyzed more than 10,000 ads from last year to determine which were the most creatively-effective, according to consumers, and you might be surprised to learn which Samsung ad was able to break into the top 10.

Samsung managed to secure 5th place after Heineken, Bosch, Burger King, and SheaMoisture, and it was followed by Milka and Google on the 6th and 7th places, respectively. As to which Samsung ad was successful enough to make the list, well, it was a Galaxy Buds Live ad titled ‘Make their year, with Galaxy Buds Live,’ seen below.

The YouTube view count doesn’t tell the whole story

The YouTube ad itself doesn’t have as many views as you might think, as it has topped 345K views since November. Even so, the ad appears to have been highly effective for many customers who have seen it, and keep in mind that it wasn’t exclusive to YouTube.

In essence, the ad encouraged parents to buy the Galaxy Buds Live earbuds for their kids who may have missed out on live concerts throughout 2020 due to lockdowns. But according to Kantar, the ad’s success is largely attributed to a few characteristics that all successful advertisers share.

Namely, the ad is distinctive and intrinsic to the brand; it’s meaningfully-different, it triggers an emotional response, and it talks with the consumer.

The Galaxy Buds Live earbuds were unveiled and released in August 2020 as the company’s first — and so far only — open-type earbuds with ANC, though as discussed in our review, ANC shouldn’t be the reason why you’d want to buy them.

TSMC founder believes that Samsung has remained the biggest threat

Although TSMC is leading the foundry sector with more than 50% market share, TSMC founder Morris Chang believes that Samsung has remained the strongest competitor in the segment due to several reasons, one of which is the fact that both TSMC and Samsung have a similar corporate culture.

But perhaps more importantly, Morris Chang is of the opinion that TSMC and Samsung share a few other qualities, such as a complete IC industry supply chain, as well as a robust talent pool. In addition, both TSMC and Samsung are established in countries that benefit from well-developed sea-air transport logistics, which are crucial elements for a foundry to remain competitive on a global scale.

At the same time, TSMC isn’t feeling any serious threat from China, as none of the China-based foundry companies are capable of competing with TSMC’s technologies and expertise. According to Morris Chang, TSMC is at least five years ahead of China’s IC manufacturing capacity, though it’s only 1-2 years ahead of China in terms of technology.

Samsung continues holding on to its long-term plans

TSMC is leading the foundry market but despite its extremely favorable position in the segment, Samsung continues to be a threat as it plans to become the world’s greatest semiconductor company and overtake TSMC by 2030.

The Taiwanese semiconductor company has started manufacturing a new semiconductor facility in Arizona last year, but Samsung is now following up with its own plans for investment in the USA, though only time will tell if the company’s alleged $17 billion investment will be poured into Texas, Arizona, or New York.

Of course, despite their similarities, there are some fundamental differences between Samsung and TSMC, foundry-wise. Most importantly, TSMC is a pure-play semiconductor company, meaning it manufactures chipsets for other clients — such as Qualcomm — without designing them. In contrast, Samsung Semiconductor is an IDM (Integrated Device Manufacturer) who both designs and manufactures ICs.

Samsung TV Plus for Galaxy phones is coming to more European markets

Samsung TV Plus dropped its TV exclusivity last year when the platform was made available for Galaxy smartphone and tablets in the USA. The same service was launched in South Korea last week, and the saga continues as Samsung TV Plus for mobile is now becoming available in Europe.

Samsung UK confirmed the platforms release to mobile earlier today, giving Galaxy smartphone and tablet users in Europe instant access to 94 free channels without having to set up any payment plans or even sign up. The platform offers free access to content from brands like Vevo Pop, Euronews, Bloomberg TV+, Teletubbies, and more. It also hosts various UK and US comedy shows such as Russell Howard’s Good News, Hot in Cleveland, and Taskmaster Best Bits.

The UK and Germany are the first in line for Samsung TV Plus

Samsung has confirmed that Samsung TV Plus for mobile will be available in the UK and Germany starting today, April 22, though in reality, the mobile app has been available in the latter country since last week when TV Plus was released for Samsung smart TVs in the Netherlands and Germany.

As for the rest of Europe, fret not, Samsung has plans for you as well. The company added that Samsung TV Plus for mobile will expand into other European markets later this year, though it hasn’t mentioned any names or fixed dates.

However, the official announcement mentions seven EU territories, so we’re guessing that Samsung TV Plus for mobile will eventually be made available everywhere it’s already accessible on the big screen. As far as Europe goes, this should at least include France, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Switzerland.

Samsung TV Plus for mobile is coming to Samsung Free this month

In addition to bringing Samsung TV Plus for mobile in more European markets, Samsung has also confirmed that the streaming platform will soon be easily accessible in Europe via Samsung Free. This feature will become available from April 28.

The Samsung TV Plus mobile app was compatible only with the Galaxy S10 / S20 and Galaxy Note 10 / Note 20 series at launch, but since then it’s been made available for a wider range of Galaxy devices including the Galaxy S9 / Note 9, mid-range phones including the Galaxy A51 / A71, the foldable series and more.

3 USA states are hoping for Samsung to invest in their chip infrastructure

The Joe Biden administration is seemingly hell-bent on building a strong chip manufacturing infrastructure in the USA, and as you might already know following recent reports, Samsung is one of the biggest industry players who are strongly considering opening up new semiconductor manufacturing plants on US soil. This has yet to be officially confirmed, but more to the point at hand, Samsung is seemingly undecided as to where it should direct its next wave of investment.

Samsung is expected to announce a 70 trillion won ($62 billion) investment in its chip manufacturing facilities, and a large portion of that sum is reportedly planned for the USA. Some industry watchers believe that Samsung is likely to invest around $17 billion in expanding its facility in Austin, Texas, but other analysts are not so convinced.

Samsung has a choice between three states: Texas, Arizona, and New York

Assuming that Samsung will indeed decide to make massive investments in USA’s chipset infrastructure this year, the company will reportedly have a choice between the states of Texas, Arizona, and New York. The company already has a chip manufacturing plant in Texas, so it would be logical for Samsung to want and invest in its existing facility to improve its production capacity.

On the other hand, Arizona might be on its way to becoming a global semiconductor hub now that TSMC and Intel are building new plants there, so there’s a chance that Samsung may want to invest in Arizona as well. The state government is reportedly offering up to $9,000 in tax credit for every job created over the course of three years.

And finally, New York is looking to become a semiconductor hotspot of its own, as the state has already proposed the largest investment in its history, worth $900 million, should Samsung decides to build a semiconductor plant there.

Samsung has yet to reach a decision as to where its resources should be allocated but industry watchers believe that, given the multiple choices, the company will reveal its plans sooner than initially expected, possibly next month.

Samsung fears it may not be able to make as many TVs as it needs to

The impact of the global chip shortage is being faced by almost all industries that utilize semiconductors. It’s one of the reasons why Samsung decided to not launch a new Galaxy Note flagship this year.

With the chip shortage showing no signs of letting up, Samsung is bracing to feel its impact in other areas of the business as well. A company executive has expressed concerns about Samsung’s TV production being reduced due to chips being in short supply.

The chip shortage may disrupt Samsung TV production

Head of Samsung Electronics’ visual display business Han Jong-hee told reporters in South Korea that if the severe chip supply shortage doesn’t improve, it “may not be possible to produce TVs.”

This is far from an ideal situation for Samsung given that it’s the leading manufacturer of TVs across the globe. The company has both a position and a reputation to protect. “We are doing all we can to prevent problems,” Han Jong-hee says, but there’s only so much they can do if the core component required for a smart TV is in short supply.

Han reportedly met with Taiwanese chipmakers like MediaTek and NovaTek recently. They produce several chip components for Samsung’s TVs. Han told reporters that the company’s supply is secure for this year. Still, concerns persist due to the shortage.

Han also pointed out that Samsung’s mass production line for its latest 146-inch Micro LED TV is in full operation. Samsung is going to expand the production line when it releases 110, 70 and 80-inch models this year.

Hi-res all the way: Galaxy A22 breaks cover in some super-crispy renders

Despite being speculated on for months by now, it wasn’t until today that the ostensible Galaxy A22 finally broke cover. Shared by well-known industry insider Steve Hemmerstoffer – @OnLeaks – these first depictions of the Galaxy A22 appear to paint a promising picture of Samsung’s upcoming budget smartphone. As is customary for this source, these renders are unofficial in nature, but they’re based on likely final factory specifications of the Galaxy A22.

This is also the basis for the claim that Samsung’s next entry-level Android smartphone will measure in at 167.2 x 76.4 x 8.7mm. Oh, and add another millimeter for the quad-camera bump area. Also, here’s your first look at the Galaxy A22, in all of its 5K-ish glory:

A22 or not, the whole Galaxy A range is all grown up

It was only last month that we have learned some concrete details about the Galaxy A22 specifications. Most notably in regards to its camera features, which leaked in quite a convincing fashion.

This is still the most affordable 5G smartphone we expect to see this year, and by quite some margin, at that. But Samsung being Samsung, that wasn’t enough, which is why we’re reportedly also in for an ultra-budget, 4G-only variant of the Galaxy A22. It’s currently unclear whether this model will even be marketed separately, but it’s pretty much a given it won’t be releasing globally. Not compared to its 5G sibling, at least. So, exciting times are ahead for the Galaxy A line which appears to be all grown up this year. Between the impressively feature-rich Galaxy A72, a more budget-conscious Galaxy A52 and this little fellow, the lines between Samsung’s device categories have never been blurrier, nor were consumers g

Galaxy Note 20, Z Flip’s OLED screens receive new environmental certification

Samsung has announced that the OLED screens used by the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Z Flip have received a new environmental certification in South Korea. It shows that the company has been taking various steps to ensure that its products are environment-friendly.

The Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Z Flip have received the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification from the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute for their OLED screens. This certification is awarded to products that are environment-friendly throughout their lifecycle, which includes the manufacturing phase.

The institute studied Samsung Display’s carbon emission, water usage during the manufacturing process, the effects on water, and other criteria that go into the production of the OLED panel for three months. At the end of the study, the OLED panels used in the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Z Flip passed seven criteria. The company also said that it has been enforcing various policies related to the environment, society, and governance (ESG) in its manufacturing processes.

The Galaxy Note 20 features a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus rigid display with Full HD+ resolution, a 60Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ certification, Gorilla Glass 5 protection, and S Pen compatibility. The Galaxy Z Flip uses a 6.7-inch foldable Dynamic AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution, a 60Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ certification, and Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) protection.

Recently, Samsung became the first brand in nine years to win the EPA’s (Environmental Protection Agency) prestigious and rare ENERGY STAR Corporate Commitment Award in the US. Samsung Semiconductor also won various environmental sustainability-related awards over the past year.
