SamMobile Daily Recap: December 6, 2017 — Galaxy S8, Galaxy S9 and more!

We publish a lot of stories on a daily basis. Unfortunately, the majority of news breaks during our European hours of operation, which makes it difficult for our readers in the US (and other regions) to keep up. However, we think we’ve come up with a fantastic solution — a daily recap.

Here’s what we covered today.

SamMobile is looking for two new authors, come be a part of the team!

The team here at SamMobile is committed to bringing the latest updates on everything related to Samsung’s mobile devices, and to further improve what we do, we are looking to hire two writers who can contribute on a daily basis. If you like and use Samsung devices and have the writing skills that we are looking for then, by all means, take advantage of this opportunity to be a part of the largest (and most accurate) source of Samsung news, leaks and rumors online.

We are looking for one author/writer for coverage in the 10 AM to 4 PM (Netherlands time) slot and one in the 4 PM to 10 PM (Netherlands time) slot. This is a paid position and kind of a mix between a full-time and part-time job as we would require the author to contribute for up to six hours in a day and expect them to consider themselves a part of the team. This isn’t a “write the necessary number of articles, then go offline” kind of gig.

While the time slots are for European timings, we don’t have a limitation on the author’s country of residence as long as he/she can work in the required slot. We would prefer writers from Europe (not including the UK, where we already have one member of our team), but again, it’s not necessary as long as you’re able to get the job done and meet our requirements for the quality of work. We also have no problem with someone writing for another blog, as long as you’re able to dedicate the required time at SamMobile.

Candidates have to meet the following requirements:

  • It goes without saying that you need to have a good command of the English language. This can’t be stressed enough. The occasional error can be accepted, but if you don’t have basic grammar skills that can be expected from a writer, it’s best if you don’t apply.
  • You must be passionate about Samsung devices and writing articles. You should be aware of what’s going on as far as Samsung and its devices are concerned. Of course, you should also be following up on the mobile/technology segment in general so you know how things compare/stand in the industry.
  • You must be a Samsung smartphone user.
  • You must have enough free time to contribute 3-5 articles each day. It’s not a requirement we will enforce just for the sake of it, but we expect you to be available in your time slot as much as you can.
  • The job will include writing news stories as well as features and reviews from time to time (with the pay differing for each kind of post). Weekends are not mandatory
  • If you have prior experience writing for any technology website, preferably mobile-related, it will work in your favor, but it’s not a requirement.
  • WordPress knowledge. Also not a requirement, but if you’re savvy with computers and technology in general, WordPress is easy as pie to learn.

If you think you meet the above requirements, send an email to both am@sammobile.com and dd@sammobile.com with SamMobile Author as the subject and the following details:

  • A feature article on the features rumored for the Galaxy S9. Try to make it an interesting article and not just one that simply lists out all rumors in a matter-of-fact manner.
  • A regular news article based on this post, in your own words: Rumor: Galaxy A 2018 series smartphones could launch with these colors.
If you can take a look at a few of SamMobile’s news articles and write your own article in a similar way, even better. We don’t require a huge post; anything over 200 words will suffice.
  • Name of the Samsung device you’re currently using.
  • Links to the articles you may have written on other websites, if any.

Consumer Reports: Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note 8 a better deal than the iPhone X

Consumer Reports, the influential publication that makes “unbiased product ratings and reviews” to help users make an informed smartphone purchase decision, thinks the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and the Galaxy Note 8 are better devices than the iPhone X when taken as a complete package. The site has published its full review of Apple’s first OLED-toting iPhone, and while the iPhone X scored high in many fields, it failed to compete with Samsung’s phones in the battery life segment.

The iPhone X also scored less than the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which are more resistant to breaking, “have the familiar home button,” and cost considerably less than the X. But it’s important to note that Consumer Reports has, on the same lines, recommended an existing device over a new one before. When the S6 came out, the publication suggested that consumers opt for the Galaxy S5, which was the last Samsung flagship at that time to offer a microSD slot and a removable battery. That didn’t stop the S6 from being a hit and paving the way for a new generation of Galaxy flagships, currently offering the best overall package for anyone in the market for a top-of-the-line smartphone.

iPhone X is a big step forward for Apple fans

Now, as Samsung fans, we’ll never tire of reading about the S8, S8+, and Note 8 scoring higher than the iPhone X, but we would be lying if we said we didn’t understand why the Apple flagship is a big step forward for iPhone fans. The notch notwithstanding, the iPhone X comes with one of Samsung’s latest OLED panels (tuned better than even the Note 8, according to tests conducted by major publications) and marks Apple’s entry in the bezel-less segment. That alone is a major reason why it’s so much better than any iPhone before it, even though it might be exorbitantly priced in many markets, and will no doubt push Samsung to do better.

Consumer Reports says the Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note 8 are a better deal than the iPhone X

According to Consumer Reports, the iPhone X also has the best smartphone camera they have ever tested, and Face ID works “very effectively” and unlocks the phone quickly. The only reason it scores low over Apple’s own iPhone 8 duo is its tendency to shatter easily. When it comes to the figures, the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus scored 81 out of 100, while the iPhone X and Galaxy Note 8 came in just a point lower. It will be interesting to see where the Galaxy S9 stands next year, and based on some of the rumors going around, Samsung’s next flagship should be able to take things up a notch (no pun intended) over its predecessor.

Report: Samsung says Galaxy S9 CES showcase ‘unlikely’

It probably won’t surprise most of you, but Samsung has apparently told The Korea Herald that a showcase of the Galaxy S9 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month is “unlikely.” Following the first such report that said the Galaxy S9 could be showcased to a few people at CES, there has been some talk of a possibility of the S9 being officially launched in January to tackle the iPhone X, but it seems to be a baseless rumor just like the one we hear each year for every upcoming Galaxy S flagship.

The Galaxy X is more likely to get a showcase at CES

What Samsung could secretly showcase at CES is its foldable phone, which has been called the Galaxy X in the rumor mill and was even spotted on the company’s official website. The Korean giant has said before that it plans to launch a foldable smartphone in 2018, and like experimental devices like the Galaxy Round before it, it’s possible a few lucky folks will be treated to a glimpse of (or given substantial information on) the Galaxy X at CES. But the Galaxy S9 will most likely not be in attendance and should get unveiled at a dedicated event at the MWC like all of its predecessors.

The rest of The Korea Herald’s report talks about previous rumors, such as the possibility of an 89-90 percent screen-to-body ratio and Samsung’s inability to ready an in-display fingerprint sensor for the Galaxy S9. Word out there is that Samsung has chosen to go with a different supplier for the fingerprint sensors on the S9, and unlike the S8 and Note 8, the Galaxy S9’s fingerprint sensor will be easier to reach. The company has also reportedly started testing the Galaxy S9 with Android 8.0 Oreo. Last but not the least, our sources tell us Samsung’s upcoming flagship will come in a brand new purple/violet color variant.

Galaxy Note 5 updated with November security patch in Indian subcontinent

Just a couple of days after releasing an update with the November security patch for the Galaxy Note 8 in India and its neighboring countries, Samsung is pushing out a similar update to the Galaxy Note 5, the company’s last proper Note flagship. The update is rolling out to the device in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka; it’s a pretty small download of 20 MB (at least in India), and other than the November patch, there’s nothing of importance here.

Galaxy Note 5 November patch out in the Indian subcontinent

The November patch itself, of course, is quite important, as it fixes a security flaw with the Wi-Fi protocol that is present on almost every modern Wi-Fi-enabled device. The patch also fixes 61 Android vulnerabilities and six found in Samsung’s software. Of course, it’s not a good sign that the November patch is coming in after the month is over, but that seems to be the norm right now for most of Samsung’s flagships from the last two years. Hopefully, the December patch will arrive sooner; it has already started rolling out to the Galaxy A5 (2016).

To get the update, open the Settings » Software update menu on your Note 5 and hit Download updates manually. You can also download the firmware from our database and use a PC for updating. The build number after the update will be N920GDDS3CQK1.

Here’s a list of the official cases that will launch alongside the Galaxy S9

Our good friends over at Galaxy Club have obtained information pertaining to the official protective cases that will launch alongside the upcoming Galaxy S9—and they include everything from a Clear View Cover to an all-new Hyperknit Cover.

Here’s the full list:

  • Alcantara Cover EF-XG960A / EF-XG965A – black, blue, mint, red
  • Clear View Cover EF-ZG960C / EF-ZG965C – blue, gold, purple
  • LED Flip Wallet EF-NG960P / EF-NG965P – purple
  • Hyperknit Cover EF-GG960F / EF-GG965F – red, gray
  • Protective Standing Cover EF-RG960C / EF-RG965C – black, silver
  • Silicon Cover EF-PG960T / EF-PG965T – blue, gray, pink

Most of those debuted with the Galaxy S8, so they should sound fairly familiar. The only exception, however, is the Hyperknit Cover. We aren’t sure what to expect, but its moniker suggests it’s a high-end protective case with a knitted back.

The Galaxy S9—and Galaxy S9+, for that matter—are expected to sport a 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch Infinity Display, respectively, a Snapdragon 845 processor and a pressure-sensitive Home button. They should also ship running Android 8.0 Oreo.

Samsung’s working on a new DeX docking station

On the topic of accessories, Samsung’s said to be working on a backward-compatible DeX docking station that lets you use the handset’s screen as a means of input when it’s laying flat, eliminating the need to carry a mouse and keyboard.
