Samsung opens new Semiconductor Headquarters in Silicon Valley

Samsung’s own semiconductor business has proven successful for the company, particularly in recent days as Samsung sales have been impacted (if you compare the company’s height of wealth from several quarters ago). At the same time, however, the Korean manufacturer’s chipmaking business has given the company an additional financial alternative to just selling smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and TVs, and the company is celebrating its success and innovation with a new semiconductor headquarters in Silicon Valley.

The new Device Solutions America headquarters, 1.1 million square feet in size, is designed as a home to over 700 employees and numerous displays, LEDs, and semiconductor research labs. The new headquarters will also bring together employees in marketing, support, and sales areas, and blend the mingling of employees with in-office gardens (which is said to “increase employees’ contentment and creativity”).

At the company’s announcement of its new semiconductor headquarters, Samsung also took time to create the $1 million STEM College Education Fund for state university students (in California) enrolled in STEM degree programs who can expect one year’s tuition and living expenses from the fund. Samsung also donated $100,000 to the Second Harvest Food Bank and another $100,000 to the Family Giving Tree.

Samsung’s new semiconductor headquarters marks the continuation of the company’s long history of innovation. We’re excited to see Samsung continue to bring “the next big things” to market.

Will Samsung’s Tizen OS fail? Why we should reserve judgment

Tizen. The word itself has not always brought the best thoughts or responses from others, but it is an operating system in the same way that Android and iOS are mobile operating systems. As a mobile operating system, Tizen should offer a basic mobile experience worth enjoying, but it is fledgling at the moment and needs more time to grow. Samsung has only unveiled the Z1 smartphone, with a Z3 smartphone on the way, but Tizen is still in its infancy – and yet, Tizen is being treated as a child that many wish had never been born.

“It doesn’t have enough apps,” some have said. True, there are not a lot of apps for Tizen at this point, at least when you compare Tizen to the app counts of iOS and Android. But at one point, iOS didn’t have the 1.5 million+ apps it has today. Android didn’t have the 1.5 million or so apps it has today back in 2008, when the first Android handset shipped, and, at the time, provided “over 50 apps” for the Android Market app store according to the Android Developers Blog post recorded on October 22, 2008. Fifty apps is a long way away from 1.5 million, and it’s taken Android seven years to achieve this feat. Seven years.

Tizen was created by Samsung in 2013 but the first Tizen-powered smartphone, the Samsung Z1, appeared on the market in January 2015 (just eight months ago); the first Android smartphone, the HTC Dream, arrived on the market in 2008 – nearly seven years ago. Samsung is no stranger to smartphones, however, with the Galaxy S, Galaxy S2, S3, S4, S4 Active, S5, S5 Active (or S5 Sport, with Sprint), S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, and Notes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 under its belt, among others, but none of these smartphones have Tizen OS as the operating system; they all run Android, property of Google (now a part of conglomerate Alphabet).

In other words, the Z1 is Samsung’s first attempt to create a smartphone that is completely of its own making. It is ridiculous to presume that Samsung’s first attempt out of the gate would equal that of Google’s own Nexus line, or of Android in general; it would be akin to expecting a first-year employee to hold the same experience and perform at the same level as an 8-year employee. As I said, Samsung is no stranger to smartphones, but it is a “stranger” when it comes to creating its own operating system. Few companies gain the resources to achieve this feat overnight.

Not only was the first commercial Tizen-powered smartphone made available just eight months ago, but it wasn’t that long ago when Google’s Android OS, from its beginning, was predicted to fail. “I don’t think it’ll be a success. Open-source phones have been tried before,” said former CNET member Rory Reid in 2007. “Here’s what I see happening. Android will still prosper…right up to the point where some other company comes out with an affordable platform and a broad selection of compatible software and hardware…what it won’t be though in the long run, unless Android gets its act together, will be Android,” wrote ZDNET’s Steven J. Vaughn-Nichols in 2011, in a piece in which he attacked the numerous developer versions and OEMs available in Android.

“And the problems with the app store and the fragmentation of the OS lead to the third and most important consideration: a general impression that Android is a low-end system for low-end purposes,” said The Kernel’s George Osborn in a 2012 editorial titled “Why Android is failing.” Did you catch Osborn’s statement? For many people, that sounds like Samsung’s Tizen at this point – but Osborn describes Google’s Android then in a manner in which many tech enthusiasts think of Samsung’s Tizen today.

And yet, for all its criticism, valid or not, look where Google is in 2015: it’s now the most dominant platform worldwide, with fans the world over preferring it to even Apple’s “polished” iOS (according to iOS users). And it’s not just low-end devices using Android OS, but even high-end devices from HTC, Sony, Samsung, LG, and Motorola, too. In other words, Google’s Android has survived the criticisms to become the most flourishing mobile OS we’ve seen in history. The key to Android’s success, more than its developers and “catch-up” app race with Apple, has been time. Android needed time – and Tizen needs time, too.

Tizen cannot be compared to Android at this point, simply because it’s too young, but there are some promising factors about Samsung’s OS. First, there is Samsung’s position in the mobile market. “If anyone can succeed at building that third ecosystem, it’s Samsung. They make their own CPUs, modems, displays, software…it makes sense they would have a strategy to move away from Google, rather than locking themselves into something outside their own control,” said ABI Research mobile devices, content, and applications senior practice director Jeff Orr.

Next, there is the arrival of “middleware” software that allows a developer to create the app just one time, then click the mouse or trackpad a few times and launch the app in several app stores. This wasn’t available when Android was “born.” Samsung has already overseen the creation of some 6,000 apps by way of its own app-writing contests. As for its Gear smartwatches that run Tizen, Samsung now has 1,000 apps ready for upcoming Gear S2 buyers. That “1,000” app count is huge when you consider that the Korean manufacturer only had 80 apps available with the Gear S launch in 2014.

Lastly, Tizen’s graphics accelerators are faster than Android’s, according to Polish developer and FinalStrike3D creator Grzegorz Adamczyk, who said as much in the MIT Technology Review. Thus, Tizen is already showing huge potential in the mobile gaming sector. Samsung’s new Game Recorder+ app for its Galaxy smartphones is only a start of the company’s dive into mobile gaming.

It’s easy to criticize a fledgling OS, but when we do, we assume that we can predict the future. We can’t. Whether or not Tizen ever has 1.5 million+ apps, or lots of developers, or whatever other characteristic of success you can fathom, we should reserve judgment and see what happens. Android has survived the attacks of its critics, and Tizen may survive and thrive along the same lines as Android. As with the famous Aesop fable, even the “turtle” can beat the “hare” if it’s persistent.

Galaxy S6 edge+ Review: Samsung’s most beautiful smartphone nears perfection

Earlier this year, Samsung knocked the socks off the competition by launching the Galaxy S6 edge, a smartphone with a screen that curves on both sides. Those curves didn’t provide the same amount of functionality as the Galaxy Note Edge that launched in 2014, but they made for a design that looked extremely futuristic. For a company that has been criticized for being very ignorant towards the design aspect, the Galaxy S6 edge was a breath of fresh air, and it proved so popular that Samsung actually faced a supply issue and didn’t have enough units to go around.

Fast forward to August, and the Korean giant unleashed a bigger version of the S6 edge in the form of the Galaxy S6 edge+. Except a larger screen and battery, the S6 edge+ is essentially the same device and is meant for those that like phablets and couldn’t do with the 5.1-inch screen on the original. According to Samsung, there’s enough demand for those curved screens for the company to make it its main flagship in most markets (the entire European region won’t be getting the Galaxy Note 5 anytime soon), but is the Galaxy S6 edge+ worth the attention its maker thinks it deserves?

Let’s find out.

Design

The Galaxy S6 edge is hands down the most beautiful smartphone available on the market. Notice how that sentence says “is” instead of “was”? Well, that’s because the S6 edge+ is not as stunning as its smaller predecessor. Don’t get me wrong: The Galaxy S6 edge+ is still amazing to look at and feels great in the hand, but the larger screen and dimensions seem to have reduced its beauty. Having both the S6 edge and the S6 edge+ side by side tells it all – the former edges (pun intended) out the latter when it comes to being the standard for how good and futuristic a mobile device can look, if only by a slight margin.

With that out of the way, let’s talk basics. The Galaxy S6 edge+ has the same hardware setup as the original; you get the display, sensors, notification LED, earpiece, secondary camera, home button with embedded fingerprint sensor, capacitive back and recent apps keys, and the Samsung logo on the front. On the left are the volume buttons (placed a little too high for a device of this size), and the power button is on the right. The headphone jack, primary microphone, USB port and single loudspeaker are at the bottom, and the top has the SIM slot and secondary microphone. There’s no IR led this time around, something that isn’t going to sit well with some consumers.

The metal and glass build means the S6 edge+ is very slippery, and the added size makes it even more of a liability, especially in one-handed usage. Thanks to those extremely thin sides of the phone, it was sometimes rather hard to hold on to it without letting it slip out of my hands or having my hands touch the screen involuntarily. All that glass is what makes the S6 lineup so attractive, but for a company that was known for making some of the most ergonomic smartphones in the industry, the premium materials are a huge change that add to the look and feel but take away most – if not all – of the practicality.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ is an extremely attractive smartphone, and it is sure to turn heads everywhere you go. But again, it doesn’t look as good as the S6 edge, though that might be because the dual-edge screen is no longer a novelty. At the end of the day, the phone gets high marks for design, keeping in mind all the limitations that tag along with the package.

Display

The Galaxy S6 edge+ features a 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display, and apart from the larger size, this is the same brilliant panel that we saw on the Galaxy S6 edge. Colors pop (with an option to make them pop less through the display mode setting), blacks are black, and viewing angles are excellent. The screen can get really bright and really dim, everything is razor sharp, and only those who prefer LCD displays will find anything at fault here. The largest indication of the fact that those dual curved edges are primarily aimed at form over functionality on the Galaxy S6 edge was the fact that the Edge screen didn’t exactly have too many useful features, and the Edge screen is still an eye-candy feature that doesn’t contribute much to the user experience. The only notable new function of the Edge screen is the Apps edge, which lets you quickly access five apps of your choosing by swiping in from the edge, no matter where you are in the UI. This is certainly useful – I had WhatsApp, Facebook and the Calculator app set as shortcuts, and I found myself frequently accessing the Apps edge to get to these apps quickly.

People Edge, which gives you quick access to five contacts, has also received a new feature called OnCircle. OnCircle lets you send emoticons, images and pokes to these contacts, and in our experience OnCircle is mostly a useless feature. First off, the initial setup process requires you to be on a mobile data connection so you can activate your phone number for the service. Secondly, the entire process of sending these items to your contacts is rather long, and you would be better off using general chat apps to do so. Also, you can still set only five shortcuts in these Edge features, and we have no idea why Samsung doesn’t put in the option to have more shortcuts and just let users scroll through them.

The Edge screen is still an eye-candy feature that doesn’t contribute much to the user experience

The rest of the Edge screen features remain the same. You get the Night Clock for displaying the time when the phone is locked (it’s still limited to having the clock on for only 12 hours at most), Information stream for viewing feeds (weather, news, etc.), and Edge lighting, which lights up the screen when the phone is face down and you receive a call from one of your favorite contacts. There’s also a neat Quick Reply option which lets you place your finger on the heart rate sensor for two seconds to reject the call and send a preset message; this is an Edge lighting feature, so the phone will have to be face down for this to work.

Overall, the Edge screen doesn’t have the functionality galore that we saw on the Galaxy Note Edge, and really, those small curves don’t leave room for too many features. If you like to have quick access to some apps and contacts, the Edge screen is great, but otherwise you can expect to see yourself turning off all of its features, either to save battery life or to just get them out of the way.

Camera

Like the display, the camera is another aspect that remains unchanged from the Galaxy S6 edge, and that’s a good thing since the S6 lineup has arguably the industry’s best smartphone cameras. What’s new this around is a couple of additional options for the Pro shooting mode, namely shutter speed control and the ability to save images in RAW format (Samsung has told us these two features will be making their way to the regular Galaxy S6 edge as well.)

Shutter speed control is the more useful option here, as it allows you to vary shutter speed depending on lighting conditions. I usually found myself reducing shutter speed to get more light into a scene, and as someone who needs to take images of Samsung devices on a regular basis for use on our website, shutter speed control comes in very handy.

Same old excellent camera with more control over the imaging experience

The image quality is stunning in daylight and good lighting conditions, with high amounts of detail and impressive noise control. Colors are slightly overblown, but that’s noticeable only when you’re viewing the images on the phone’s display instead of a computer. Images come out well at night, too, and while the viewfinder continues to show a lot of noise when you’re aiming the camera at the subject, the final pictures come out better. The F1.9 aperture and optical image stabilization are a great combination for low-light photography, and like the 5.1-inch Galaxy S6 phones, the S6 edge+ can take really quick pictures even in bad lighting.

The front camera is also good; it captures enough detail and does well at controlling noise, with the wide angle lens helping us fit more into each picture than competing flagships. When it comes to video recording, the phone is excellent. There’s a lot of detail, and the optical image stabilization ensures the output is smooth and shake-free for the most part.

Battery Life

Battery life has been a major concern on smartphones this year, and the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge weren’t strong performers in the endurance department. The Galaxy S6 edge+ has a 3,000 mAh battery, which is pretty much a standard for phablets these days, and I am glad to say it did an admirable job of letting me get through the work day on a single charge. Let’s get it out of the way – devices like the Galaxy A8 and Galaxy J5 still have a major lead when it comes to battery life, but the Galaxy S6 edge+ didn’t worry me about finding a charging point as much as the S6 edge.

To quote numbers, the Galaxy S6 edge+ usually gave me around 16 to 18 hours of total time on a single charge, with around 3 to 3.5 hours of screen time with medium usage that involved a bit of imaging, Facebook, WhatsApp, some browsing, and 10 to 15 minutes of gaming (I regularly played N.O.V.A 3 during my test period.) Using the phone at a stretch dropped the total count to around 13-14 hours, but the screen on time climbed to 4 hours+. On mobile data, 13-14 hours was the extent of total endurance if I wanted to achieve 3 hours of screen time, and this was with the medium usage I described above, minus the gaming sessions.

Idle drain is okay; there’s around 3 to 5 percent of drain with everything left on overnight. As for charging times, Samsung’s quoted numbers on wired fast charging are pretty much accurate. The phone went from 0 to 100 percent in under 100 minutes almost every time. Samsung also quotes a charging time of 120 minutes on a wireless charger; we weren’t able to test this, but we’re guessing the company’s claim will be mostly accurate in real-life situations.

Overall, the Galaxy S6 edge+ scores well in the battery department, though I still wish Samsung would stop using quick and wireless charging support as excuses for the not-so-great battery life. There is no reason why flagship smartphones shouldn’t last as long as mid-range devices, and we long for the day when manufacturers will go back to prioritizing battery life over a phone’s design, or at least make sure the two go hand-in-hand.

Software and Performance

The Galaxy S6 edge+ comes with the same TouchWiz UX that debuted on the Galaxy S6, with Android 5.1.1 preloaded out of the box. The feature set remains the same, though Samsung has made a few interface changes here and there. For example, the screen rotation switch in the notifications shade now switches between the words Portrait and Auto Rotate instead of simply changing its color, and the notification ringtones are now a tad different, with a sleeker and sharper sound. There’s still no guest mode option, and for all intents and purposes this is the same software that we saw on the Galaxy S6 edge.

Performance is another aspect that hasn’t exactly changed too much, and everything happens quickly and smoothly. The 4GB of RAM is the highlight here, helping the device hold more apps in memory than its predecessor. However, compared to other smartphones, Samsung is still doing some aggressive app killing – the S6 edge+ still manages to keep less apps in memory than 3GB RAM devices like the LG G4.

The 4GB of RAM does seem to help the phone stay smooth and fast in all instances, but for anyone expecting it to enable more serious multitasking will be disappointed. Around 1.1 GB of RAM would be free at any given moment, and the phone didn’t seem to want to go lower than that, possibly to make sure the software doesn’t get bogged down by too many tasks.

Audio, Call quality

The audio and call quality are something we felt were exactly the same as the Galaxy S6 edge, so you can read up on our S6 edge review for all the details.

Conclusion

When the Galaxy S6 edge came out, it was heralded as a thing of beauty, and rightly so thanks to those curves on either side of the screen. The Galaxy S6 edge+ is more or less the same device with a larger screen and a larger battery, and the latter helps it be the complete package its predecessor could not. However, it fails to capture our imagination in a way that would justify its price tag. It’s a brilliant phone with no major negative (not counting the non-expandable storage), and the only question you need to ask yourself is whether you’re willing to fork out the cash Samsung is asking before you go out and buy the device.

If you’re in a market where the Galaxy Note 5 is available as well, we would recommend you get that phone instead of the Galaxy S6 edge+, unless the beauty of the curved screen is an important aspect in your list of must-haves. If the Note 5 isn’t there in your country, well, the Galaxy S6 edge+ is a safe choice if the price isn’t a concern. The smaller Galaxy S6 edge is also an option, though you will have to deal with a battery that’s not as dependable as the one on the Plus variant.

Samsung Pay app updated, features new off-screen activation, auto card number display

Samsung is preparing to roll out its mobile payment solution, Samsung Pay, to the US on September 28th, but the Korean manufacturer is still making subtle changes to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience when the rollout happens. The latest changes appear to be a new off-screen activation for Samsung Pay as well as virtual card numbers that are now displayed automatically. The new off-screen activation allows you to pay for items without having to first unlock the screen to do so – a complaint made by some Samsung Pay beta testers who were also using Apple Pay at the same time.

Alongside of the off-screen activation for Samsung Pay, users can also set the mobile payments app to activate from both their lock screen and home screens, though we know many users will prefer the screen-off function best. Simply swipe upwards to activate Samsung Pay (just make sure you set the settings toggle to “on” before trying it). Also, you’ll notice that card numbers are now displayed automatically, as opposed to before.

The new Samsung Pay update brings the latest version to 1.3.1716, along with an “About” section where you can check for future Samsung Pay updates.

Galaxy S7 release date may come in early February, source says

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge were announced on March 1st but released shortly before mid-April, but a new rumor says that the Galaxy S7 could be released as early as February (early), following a January announcement.

A specific reason for such an early announcement and release date haven’t been given, but Samsung could presumably follow this early launch (as it did with the Galaxy Note5’s August announcement instead of the usual September one at IFA) to get out ahead of its competition with a new smartphone that’ll allow consumers to purchase right away instead of killing the hype with a long waiting period. Immediate access goes a long way toward boosting sales.

The Galaxy S7 is being developed under the codename Project Lucky, and is said to feature Qualcomm’s new quad-core Snapdragon 820 processor, with two models: one featuring the Qualcomm quad-core Snapdragon 820 processor, the other the octa-core Exynos. The Galaxy S7 could also have two different screen sizes and a dual-camera setup. One Galaxy S7 prototype featured 4GB of RAM while another featured 3GB of RAM, suggesting that Samsung will bring out at least two models, similar to the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. Of course, we don’t know whether Samsung will stick with all four models of the Galaxy S line or condense them into two flagships next year. The Galaxy S6 edge is considered to be 2015’s Samsung Galaxy S flagship, with many seeing the plain Galaxy S6 as more of a nod to traditional buyers than anything else.

Whether or not this rumor is true for now, it shows that Samsung plans to make the best of the time it’s given. 2016 looks to be as fine a year as ever, and, as Samsung knows all too well, time waits for no one.

Themes Thursday: A staggering 57 themes released in Samsung Theme Store today

Samsung has upped its game when it comes to the number of themes that are being released each week. The company has released a staggering number of themes in the Theme Store today, 57 to be exact, and we are sure that there’s something for everyone.

A lot of these themes are paid, but some of the free ones are really good looking as well. We personally liked seven themes – Blue Flower, Dark Knight, Galaxy Note 5, Minimalistic Pink, Onyx, The Symbolic View of U.S.A, and Waterfront – that are shown in the images below.

The Galaxy Note 5 theme features icons similar to the ones that come with the default theme on the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+. Choice differs, and you might like other themes, so don’t forget to tell us the ones that you liked in the comments section below.

Samsung and Oculus announce consumer version of Gear VR for $99, coming this fall

After releasing “Innovator Edition” variants of its virtual reality headset, Samsung has finally announced the consumer variant of the Gear VR today in collaboration with Oculus VR. The Gear VR works with recently released high-end smartphones from Samsung – the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S6 edge, the Galaxy S6 edge+, and the Galaxy Note 5.

The Gear VR features 54 ~ 70 mm fixed lenses that provide 96-degree field of view, and is equipped with a bunch of sensors including an accelerometer, a gyrometer, and a proximity sensor. It can be connected to Samsung’s latest smartphones using a microUSB connection. The Gear VR will be available in Frost White color for $99 starting this fall.

The South Korean smartphone giant claims that the new Gear VR is 22 percent lighter than previous Gear VR Innovator Editions. Apparently, this new virtual reality headset includes a new foam cushioning for better comfort, and an improved touchpad for better greater control while consuming media. We will report about the exact launch date when we get more information about it.

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup, and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the last 24 hours through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.
