Samsung Singapore confirms Blue Coral Galaxy S7 edge, launches on November 5

With the Galaxy Note 7 off the market, Samsung is putting all its focus on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, which will be the company’s only flagship offerings until the Galaxy S8 arrives next year. It was recently revealed that Samsung could be bringing the Note 7′s Blue Color paint job to the Galaxy S7 edge, and Samsung Singapore has now officially announced that the Blue Coral Galaxy S7 edge will be launching in the country on November 5.

Samsung hasn’t published any photos of the device, but judging by the photos of the blue S7 edge for Verizon that leaked earlier this month, the Blue Coral S7 edge will look exactly like the blue version of the Note 7 (meaning golden hues on the sides). There’s no telling whether the Blue Coral S7 edge will launch in markets where the blue Note 7 wasn’t announced; we certainly hope Samsung makes it available in as many markets as possible, as a way of making up for the fact that it has no Galaxy Note flagship on offer this year (and the second time in a row for European consumers).

It’s also unclear if the regular Galaxy S7 will be launched in blue, especially since the Galaxy S7 edge has proven to be the more popular choice for people trading in their Galaxy Note 7 for another Samsung device. Would you be interested in picking up a Blue Coral Galaxy S7/Galaxy S7 edge? Let us know in the comments!

Thanks, Lim!

Galaxy C9 Pro hands-on reveals more details about this new Samsung phone

Samsung was due to unveil the Galaxy C9 Pro today in China, just yesterday we reported that it had been listed online by one of the country’s largest retailers, the listing also brought us some pictures and details of this device. Folks over at GalaxyClub have gone hands-on with this new smartphone from Samsung. It’s the most powerful model in the Galaxy C series, boating specs such as a 6-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, Snapdragon 653 processor, fingerprint sensor, 16-megapixel front and rear camera. It also happens to be the first Samsung smartphone to come with 6GB of RAM. It seems more like overkill because it’s pointed out in the hands-on that at any given time there would be more than 2GB of available time. With light usage free memory went up to 3GB, thus showing that as things currently stand 4GB of RAM is sufficient enough, but it makes sense for Samsung to come out with this in a market where almost all local manufacturers are selling smartphones with 6GB RAM.

The Galaxy C9 Pro hands-on also sheds some light on the new antenna design of this handset. Three straight lines run at the top and bottom on the back of the device, the new antenna technology inside the shell is said to provide improved performance, aside from the fact that it’s aesthetically pleasing as well. The overall user interface is said to be smooth and intuitive so the handset appears to be good performance-wise. It does come with the new Grace UX so some software features that were released with the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 are onboard too.

The Galaxy C9 Pro costs north of $400 in China, it’s unknown currently whether this smartphone will be released in any other markets, that does seem unlikely if history is any indication.

Samsung might cut its entire executive strength by up to 20 percent

A sense of doom and gloom prevails at Samsung as the company is reeling from the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco. It’s believed that many will be shown the door at Samsung’s mobile division as punishment for the entire episode. Samsung began its annual performance assessment of executives earlier this month, it then reshuffles the top brass and executives come December, according to reports Samsung might cut its entire executive strength by up to 20 percent.

Samsung has nearly 1,000 executives and it might sack around 200 of them, reports Korean broadcaster MBC. The company reduced the strength by 129 last year and Samsung is expected to apply more strict performance evaluation rules this year, that’s independent of firings related to the Galaxy Note 7 crisis.

Word on the street is that president of Samsung’s mobile division Koh Dong-jin and some of his top aides might be relieved of their duties to hold them accountable. Koh took over as president just last year, he previously served as the head of Samsung Mobile’s R&D division for many years and been credited with playing a leading role in developing the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series.

His top aides include Rhee In-jong and Roh Tae-moon who head the software and hardware units of the R&D division, respectively. These two executives were actually considered as potential candidates for the post of president once Koh moved further up the ranks but their future at the company looks unclear as Samsung is yet to confirm whether or not heads will roll for the botched Galaxy Note 7 launch.

It won’t exactly be easy for Samsung to make such a big change at the top, an unnamed Samsung source mentioned in the report points out that dismissing Koh just one year after he took over as the mobile division’s president is only going to undermine the morale of other executives and is likely going to put too much pressure on his successor.

YouTube reverses absurd takedown of GTA 5 Galaxy Note 7 bomb mod video

Earlier this month we reported about a mod created for Grand Theft Auto 5 which allowed players to replace the in-game sticky bomb with the Galaxy Note 7 because of, you know, the flagship’s tendency to explode. The video detailing this mod quickly went viral and remained up for a couple of weeks until just a few days ago when Samsung decided to have it taken down. It filed a DMCA request with YouTube and the video was taken down, however, the online video platform has now reversed the decision and restored the video.

It merits mentioning here that the video does not contain anything that can be considered to be a copy of intellectual property owned by Samsung so the DMCA claim was flaky at best. The creator of this video filed a counterclaim with YouTube which then reviewed its decision. He posted his correspondence with YouTube on this matter online and it confirms that the video has been restored, it’s now accessible via its original link.

Samsung stood to gain nothing by being petty about this, at a time when it’s reputation is already taking a lot of flak, it was a bad decision that should not have been made. The video is back up and it’s highly unlikely that YouTube will consider another takedown request now and that’s beside the fact that countless similar videos are now available on YouTube. Samsung will surely think twice before sending notices to have each and every one of those videos taken down.

Samsung preparing itself for additional class action lawsuits by Galaxy Note 7 customers

It was only a matter of time after the dust began to settle on the Galaxy Note 7 recall for class action lawsuits to be filed against Samsung. One has already been filed against the company in the United States and the other on its home turf in South Korea. Samsung sees additional potential legal challenges in the near future which is why it has reportedly started preparing to fight its case. The company is said to have hired the services to two major law firms – Gwangjang and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan – as its legal advisors.

These law firms have previously worked with Samsung on its patent disputes with Apple. They are now reportedly reviewing the legal implications surrounding the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7. Samsung’s retail and carrier partners might seek compensation as well since they have had to cover some of the costs associated with refunds on their own. Samsung might inevitably have to compensate them to ensure that its carrier and retail partnerships remain intact. Samsung is also reportedly coming up with a new compensation program to further appease Galaxy Note 7 owners, it’s claimed that the company will offer customers a discount on the Galaxy S8 or the next Note handset as part of this program.
