Themes Thursday: Take a look at this week’s three new best themes

Welcome back to Themes Thursday, our weekly series where we showcase some of the best new theme packs released for Galaxy smartphones. Samsung has released 311 new theme packs in the Theme Store over the past seven days, and we’ve shortlisted three of them. We think that most people would like these themes, and you can find them in the Theme Store on your compatible Galaxy device.

All three themes listed here have been designed by Binod Kumar Ray, and they come with good-looking AoD wallpapers. The BlueCityUI theme has a bright UI with turquoise as its focus color. The ScubaUI has a very good AoD wallpaper and a bright UI with orange as its base color. The SurfBoardUI theme is the best of the bunch, thanks to its neatly designed icons, bright UI, and attractive backgrounds.

SamMobile Daily Recap: June 15, 2017 — Galaxy J (2017), Galaxy Note 8 and more!

Latest Galaxy S8 update makes it easier to use apps in fullscreen mode

Samsung rolled out a firmware update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ yesterday which featured the June security patch. It has now been discovered that the update also brings a couple of minor tweaks.

We’ve already mentioned how this update limits color options for the Galaxy S8′s navigation bar background. Users can no longer use a fully black navigation bar background which isn’t that great when you think about it. Samsung has provided no reason for switching up the background colors.

Another minor change included in this update pertains to running apps in fullscreen mode. We’ve previously revealed a tip to you about how you can use all apps in fullscreen mode on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+’s tall displays.

Samsung has allowed users to enable fullscreen mode for each app individually since day one. There’s a shortcut in the recents menu for precisely this purpose, but Samsung is now making it easier to do this with the latest firmware update.

The update adds a new button which will be displayed above the navigation bar in apps that don’t support the native resolution. “Tap here to fill entire screen,” reads the button which is self-explanatory. Just tap on it and the app will automatically enter fullscreen mode.

It’s easier and faster to enter the fullscreen mode for apps that don’t properly fit the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+’s display. It will come in handy until such time as developers update their apps with proper support for the larger display.

Top 5 features of Samsung’s new Galaxy J smartphones

Last week, Samsung finally took the wraps off the Galaxy J3 (2017), Galaxy J5 (2017) and Galaxy J7 (2017). As we mentioned in our initial thoughts post, we’re pretty impressed with the handsets, though we’re a little disappointed the firm didn’t dedicate more resources to increasing their power. Nevertheless, they still offer a ton of great features.

Here’s a few of our favorite.

Android 7.0 Nougat

Yes, you read that right: the Galaxy J3 (2017), Galaxy J5 (2017) and Galaxy J7 (2017) all ship running the latest flavor of Android, with Samsung’s Experience — formerly known as TouchWiz — user interface plastered over the top. For those unaware, that’s the same overlay that can be found on the recently-released Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

Big batteries

Nobody wants to pick up a smartphone only to find that it’s unable to last a full day on a single charge. However, it doesn’t look like Galaxy J3 (2017), Galaxy J5 (2017) or Galaxy J7 (2017) owners will have that problem as all three handsets sport relatively larger batteries — 2,400mAh, 3,000mAh and 3,600mAh, respectively. Pretty impressive.

Fingerprint sensor

It’s quite rare for a budget-friendly smartphone — from a large, non-Chinese manufacturer, at least — to come with a fingerprint sensor, yet both the Galaxy J5 (2017) and Galaxy J7 (2017) do, similar to the Galaxy J7 Prime that launched in India last year. It’s unclear why there isn’t one on board the Galaxy J3 (2017) as well, but we’re guessing it’s for the same reason it doesn’t have an AMOLED display: it’s too cheap.

Metal body

The Galaxy J3 (2017), Galaxy J5 (2017) and Galaxy J7 (2017) are three of the lowest-priced smartphones on the market (at least from a big name manufacturer) to feature a metal frame, which not only increases their appeal from an aesthetic standpoint, but also makes them a little more durable than if they were constructed from another material — like plastic — as they won’t shatter when dropped from a considerable height.

Selfie camera

The 5MP front-facing camera on the J3 (2017) is nothing to write home about, but things start to get a little more interesting when you take a look at the new J5 and J7. Tucked away beneath their 5.2- and 5.5-inch displays, you’ll find a 13MP shooter, which sounds like it’s perfectly capable of capturing crystal clear selfies in any environment.

What do you think about the Galaxy J3 (2017), Galaxy J5 (2017) and the Galaxy J7 (2017)? Be sure to let us know your thoughts, along with whether you’ll be picking one up, in the comments section down below. On a related note, stay tuned for our comprehensive reviews of all three handsets in the coming weeks.

Daily Deal: Save 15% on a 32GB Evo Select microSD card

Amazon has slashed the price of Samsung’s 32GB EVO Select microSD card by 15%, so you can pick one up for just $13.49. Arguably the best thing about this specific card is that it offers one of the fastest transfer speeds on the market, which makes it perfect for recording 4K video.

If you like the sound of the 32GB EVO Select microSD card and want to bag yourself one for the reduced price, hit the Buy Now button below. We really advise you to hurry though, as Amazon only has a limited amount of inventory available for this specific deal and once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Galaxy Note 8 running Android 7.1.1 spotted in HTML5Test database

The Galaxy Note 8, which is expected to be officially unveiled in September at IFA 2017, has been spotted running Android 7.1.1. The upcoming phablet appeared in HTML5Test’s database. Moreover, it appears to be running the Samsung Internet 5.2 web browser. The device scored 488 out of a total of 555 points in this test.

Samsung could be testing the Galaxy Note 8 (with its official model number SM-N950F) before its official unveiling, and HTML5Test is one of the renowned benchmarks that are available for checking web browsing performance. The smartphone is expected to feature the same design language as that of the Galaxy S8 and S8+, albeit with an S Pen.

The Galaxy Note 8 is rumored to feature a 6.3-inch Infinity Display, dual 12MP+13MP cameras with 3x optical zoom, an 8-megapixel secondary camera, either an Exynos 8895 processor or a Snapdragon 836 SoC. It will reportedly miss out on an in-screen fingerprint reader. Samsung had started the firmware development for the device back in April.

Samsung’s new QLED signage displays will be powered by Tizen 3.0

After launching world’s first smart signage displays last year, Samsung has now announced that its new signage display solutions will be based on the Tizen 3.0 open source operating system. The company will showcase these new models at the InfoComm 2017 tradeshow starting today. Moreover, some of these new signage displays make use of Samsung’s QLED and HDR10+ technologies for brightness of up to 1,500 nits and vibrant colors.

A key component of our vision for the future of visual display is empowering our partners to deliver compelling content across their network with reduced operational complexity. Through the Tizen 3.0 integration, these partners can enjoy easy delivery of smoother, clearer and more secure content without straying from their day-to-day operations,” said Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.

The company will also showcase its new signage displays working in conjunction with HARMAN’s Acendo collaboration system for a more engaging experience. Tizen 3.0 brings a more powerful graphics engine for faster interaction, loading speeds, and response times to these new signage solutions. It is also secured by KNOX security suite to keep signage displays safe from external software attacks and hacking.

QLED signage board models are available in 55-inch and 65-inch versions. They offer 100 percent color volume, up to a billion colors, and wider viewing angles. The company will also showcase three IF series LED signage displays at its booth at InfoComm 2017. Even these models are HDR-enabled and can achieve a maximum brightness of up to 2,500 nits. Apart from these, Samsung will also showcase four XPB-series of LED signage displays that come with an embedded Banner Content Management Solution.
