Galaxy S10 LED cover to have an ‘Emotional Lighting Effect’

Do you ever just look at your phone’s case and wonder if it could give you some emotional support? Samsung seems to think a lot of people are doing this which is why the Galaxy S10 LED cover will have an “Emotional LED Lighting Effect” for some reason.

This LED cover for Samsung’s upcoming flagship has surfaced in a leaked image. The company is no stranger to making first-party accessories for its devices so there’s little doubt about the authenticity of this case.

Galaxy S10 LED cover has a garish ambient effect

We have previously seen LED flip covers from Samsung. They have a flap on the front which covers the screen and also displays notifications and a clock. That implementation was pretty useful. Samsung seems to be going in a completely different direction with the Galaxy S10 LED cover.

There no flap on the front and the LEDs are all at the back. This means that the notifications will only be useful if your phone is lying face down. That’s not how you’ll be placing your phone if you’re bold enough to rock a Galaxy S10 without a screen protector. The Emotional LED Lighting Effect appears to be a garish ambient pattern that mimics a starry night at the back of your phone.

You can all put your heads together and try to comprehend why Samsung feels something like this is required. It’s confident enough about its efficacy and this case will seemingly be offered for all three Galaxy S10 variants. It’s not something that I would be particularly interested in wasting my money or my Galaxy S10’s battery life on, for that matter.

Galaxy Note 8 Android Pie update released in more markets

The Galaxy Note 8’s Android Pie update started rolling out last Friday in Bulgaria and Slovakia, and it has now reached a number of other countries. Of course, users of the Pie beta had access to the stable update as well, but Samsung has also released the update quickly for those on Android Oreo.

Galaxy Note 8 owners in Iran, Russia, India, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and a few other Asian markets can download Android Pie right away. The release of the second major new OS update for a flagship this quick is quite impressive, and it’s equally impressive that Samsung hasn’t just limited the release to one or two markets. The Note 8’s Pie update is available in more than 10 countries as we write this, and we can expect the rollout to expand more rapidly in the coming days.

To check if the update is available for your phone, you can open the Settings app on your Note 8, tap Software update, then tap Download updates manually. Our firmware database also has the Android Pie firmware files for the countries where the update has been rolled out, and you can use the firmware for your country to upgrade to Pie if it isn’t available for you over the air.

Don’t forget to check out what’s new and improved in Android Pie in our One UI (Android Pie) feature focus series and leave a comment if the update is available in your country (do tell us which country you’re in).

Canary Yellow model of the Galaxy S10e is… bright

The Samsung Galaxy S10e, which is said to be the cheapest of the upcoming Galaxy S10 trio, has surfaced in another leak, this time showcasing the Canary Yellow variant of the handset. And it’s, for lack of a better word, bright — almost as if someone’s colored it in with a Stabilo.

It’s not too dissimilar to what rival Apple did with the iPhone XR, introducing vibrant colors that cater to the budget-conscious teenage market, where customers are looking for a smartphone that bundles all the latest must-have features in a vibrant shell that’s bubbly and fun.

To be clear, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Canary Yellow hue – the vibrant shade first broke cover in a batch of renders of the Galaxy S10e two weeks ago, and later cropped up in another set of renders highlighting (if you’ll pardon the rather bad pun) an accompanying set of Galaxy Buds.

February 20 is the date for your diary

Samsung is expected to start taking pre-orders for the flagship Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+, as well as the more affordable Galaxy S10e, on February 21, after all three are announced ahead of MWC 2019 on February 20. They should start shipping in major markets, like the US, on March 8.

Canary Yellow is a bold move for Samsung. It’s not a color that will whet everyone’s appetite. I mean, I can’t remember the last time I saw someone with a neon case strapped to their handset. But that’s not to mean there isn’t an audience for such a device — or else Apple wouldn’t be doing it.

Do you like the look of the Canary Yellow model of the Galaxy S10e? Is it something you can see yourself, or someone you know, owning? Let us know in the comments down below. I for one am not a fan, because it’s a bit… well… unprofessional. Then again, I’m not the target customer.

[Poll] Will that flat display make you pick up a Galaxy S10e?

Samsung, for the first time in three years, is finally making another flagship phone with a flat screen. The Galaxy S10e gets that distinction in the Galaxy S10 lineup that will go official on February 20. While Samsung has probably just done it as a cost-saving measure, fans who have been staying away from Samsung flagships because of the curved displays will be happy that flat screens are finally returning.

Of course, to gain access to that flat display, consumers will have to give up some features. These include a bigger battery, triple rear cameras, an in-display fingerprint sensor, and that 1TB storage option that Samsung is going to offer on the Galaxy S10 and S10+. But diehard fans of flat displays will probably ignore all those shortcomings if they’ve been waiting to upgrade from an older model like the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S7, because the S10e will still offer plenty of new things for owners of those devices.

Of course, some will rue the fact that Samsung isn’t putting the flat screen on the S10 or S10+, and we want to know which camp do you fall in. So go ahead and vote in the poll below to let us know: Will the Galaxy S10e’s flat display be the reason you pick it up? Do leave a comment with your thoughts once you’ve voted!

Are you going to pick up the Galaxy S10e because of the flat display?

Official Samsung Galaxy S10 screen protectors will work with display FP sensor

A leaked image of the official Samsung Galaxy S10 screen protectors suggests that they will be able to work with the in-display fingerprint sensor without requiring any cutouts. Some earlier rumors had suggested that normal screen protectors would not be able to function with the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+. It was even claimed in a few rumors that cutouts would be required in screen protectors just so the in-display fingerprint sensor could be used.

The leaked image shows boxes of the official screen protectors that will be sold by Samsung for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+. The Galaxy S10e doesn’t have an in-display fingerprint sensor. It will be Samsung’s first flagship with a side-mounted sensor.

Official Samsung Galaxy S10 screen protectors

The image makes it clear that the official screen protectors will be applied to the display much like any other screen protector. Since no cutouts can be seen at the front it’s safe to say that the in-display fingerprint sensor will work even with the protector installed. It would obviously not make sense for an official accessory to cripple one of the defining features of Samsung’s new flagship.

A report suggested last month that Samsung might pre-install screen protectors on all three models of the Galaxy S10. You’ll find a protector already installed the moment you take your brand new Galaxy S10 out of the box. Screen protectors are one of the key accessories that people purchase when they get an expensive new smartphone. It never hurts to have an additional layer of protection for the gorgeous display

The Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10+ are due to be unveiled on February 20 in San Francisco, California. We’ll be on the ground to bring you the latest developments from the event.

Samsung says goodbye to Blu-ray players in the US

Samsung has told Forbes that it will not launch any new 4K Blu-ray players in the United States going forward. According to the publication, the company apparently had plans to launch a new high-end 4K Blu-ray player in 2019, but the plan has now been shelved. Confirming the news, the South Korean company told CNET that it has decided to stop making new 1080p models as well, effectively saying goodbye to Blu-ray players.

“Samsung will no longer introduce new Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray player models in the US market,” a Samsung spokesperson told CNET. Interestingly, the statement leaves the possibility of the company launching new models outside the US, although the chances are very slim. Also, since the decision pertains to new models, the company may continue to make and sell existing models as long as it makes business sense.

One step closer to the death of physical discs

The move to abandon the Blu-ray player market is not surprising as the proliferation of cheap 4K streaming devices and services has made accessing 4K content easy, eliminating the hassle of dealing with physical discs. While it can be argued that Blu-ray discs still offer better picture and audio quality, it is evident that customers are willing to trade it for the convenience and cost efficiency of streaming services.

Last year, Chinese brand OPPO also quit the Blu-ray player market. With Samsung joining the list now, we are one step closer to the inevitable death of physical discs. Overall sales were down last year and that’s likely going to be the trend this year as well.

Samsung Internet beta with One UI design changes released

Samsung has released a new beta for the Samsung Internet browser, bringing the One UI design language to the app. Beta version 9.2.00.47 is available from the Galaxy Apps Store and the Play Store now and, in addition to the design changes, also brings an important privacy feature called Smart Anti-Tracking.

As expected, the One UI design has resulted in most menus and functions being shifted to the bottom of the screen for easier access with one-handed usage. Samsung also mentions there’s a Night mode now, but it’s still called Dark mode inside the app and seems to work the same as before. The app icon has received an update as well, with a flatter look to match the icons we see on Android Pie on Galaxy phones.

As for the Smart Anti-Tracking feature, it’s something that will attempt to reduce your chances of seeing ads about something you may have searched for on one site from showing up on another site. For example, have you ever searched something on Google, only to find ads about it on Facebook and other apps? That’s made possible with cross-site tracking, and Smart Anti-Tracking will basically make it hard for sites to do that on your phone.

You can download the newest Samsung Internet beta from the Play Store or Galaxy Apps store. We also have the APK for the new version available in our APK section.

This tempered glass protector will work with Galaxy S10 fingerprint sensor

The Galaxy S10‘s in-display fingerprint sensor may not work with tempered glass screen protectors, and we recently saw evidence for that in a leaked video. The video showed the Galaxy S10+ being tested with a screen protector, which had a ugly cutout for the in-display fingerprint sensor. However, a company is claiming that its tempered glass screen protector for the Galaxy S10 works without needing a cutout.

Whitestone Dome Glass for Galaxy S10

Whitestone says that the issue with tempered glass protectors not working with an ultrasonic reader is an air gap created between the sensor and the screen. However, the company claims to have solved the issue with its Dome Glass protector, making it the only tempered glass screen protector that can recognize the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor in the Galaxy S10 and S10+. It utilizes Liquid Optically Clear Adhesive (LOCA) technology to fill any gaps.

Whitestone’s Dome Glass comes with an Oleophobic coating, which promises crystal clear transparency. It also promises highest touch sensitivity on all areas of the screen, including the curves. The Dome Glass is designed to absorb and distribute impact shock, Whitestone says.

Applying the Dome Glass itself seems a big task, given you need to prevent tiniest of air bubbles. However, to help you out, Whitestone will provide you with an install frame and a UV curing light. You can also check out the installation video below.

The Whitestone Dome Glass for the Galaxy S10 costs $60 for a pack of two. You can pre-order it here.

10 years of Samsung Galaxy S flagships: Looking back at the Galaxy S8!

Welcome to part seven of our 10 years of Samsung Galaxy S flagship series, in which we here at SamMobile talk about our experiences and memories of each of the nine Galaxy S flagships that have come before the Galaxy S10. Today, we look back at the Galaxy S8, the device that started Samsung’s journey into the bezel-less fad that has gripped the smartphone industry and refuses to let go. It was also the flagship that saw Samsung do away with flat screens for good, with both the S8 and S8+ featuring curved displays of varying sizes.

Samsung saw huge demand for the Galaxy S8 and S8+, and rightly so, considering the two phones were perhaps the most beautiful flagship phones on the market at the time. Those Infinity displays were great, although die-hard fans complained about those software navigation keys. Thanks to the demise of the Galaxy Note 7, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ were the first Samsung phones to have an iris sensor that people could actually use (well, unless they hung on to their Note 7 even after the recall). And the iris sensor was especially handy given the poor placement of the fingerprint sensor on the S8 duo. The S8 had great cameras as well, with the front camera getting autofocus support for the first time.

And who can forget the Bixby button? The S8’s dedicated Bixby key was criticized by fans everywhere for being too intrusive for a virtual assistant that didn’t even do anything at launch. The key couldn’t be remapped, either. While some third-party apps allowed us to get around that limitation, it simply did not sit well with users that they had an extra button on the phone that didn’t serve any purpose. Remember, other than the US and South Korea, Bixby didn’t work anywhere else for months after the S8 was launched.

But, overall, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ were excellent phones. What do we remember about them? Well, you’ll have to continue reading to find out. Don’t forget to let us know your thoughts and memories about the Galaxy S8 and S8+ down in the comments section afterwards!

Abhijeet Mishra

The Galaxy S8+ was an excellent phone in my opinion, at least in the first couple of months. Performance on the phone dipped considerably for me compared to the Galaxy S7 edge or the Galaxy S9+ later on, and as regular readers will know, I was also quite critical of the fingerprint sensor’s stupid position next to the rear camera. And the iris sensor wasn’t that quick at unlocking, either, and I guess we can put the blame for that on Samsung’s software being a little slow at waking up.

I also loved it that the front of every Galaxy S8 was all black, something Samsung should have been doing on its AMOLED phones since day one (so as far back as the first Galaxy S), because it’s awesome to see an all black front when the screen is displaying black/dark images. Another thing I liked about the S8 is that Samsung, for the first time, brought out a gold color option that looked sober. I had the blue S8+, but I was quite impressed with the gold one when I saw a friend using it.

Adnan Farooqui

The Galaxy S8 really made Samsung stand all against the competition at that time. You couldn’t fault the display while the design had been significantly improved as well. As far as the look and feel go, Samsung did a perfect job in my book.

Yes, there were some performance concerns down the line which was disappointing. We had expected better from the flagship. Personally, I couldn’t quite get what the fuss about the fingerprint placement was all about as it didn’t really bother me. Clearly it bother a lot of other people, though. There’s not much I can fault on the Galaxy S8. I quite enjoyed using the Galaxy S8+ as my daily driver for well over a year.

Martin Reinders

The Galaxy S8 was the first phone without a home button and the fingerprint sensor was relocated to the back. It was so horrible to use (the fingerprint sensor, not the phone) that I ended up not using it at all. Other than that, I thought the bezels could have been a bit smaller, but I thought it was a good design overall.

Henk Loosbroek

I bought the S8+ because the Galaxy Note 7 got cancelled, and as a long-time Note fan, it was great to see a big Galaxy S phone. It was the first Galaxy S phone that I really liked! The battery life and cameras were quite good, and to me, the S8+ was pretty much a Note without the S Pen. It was the last time I had a Galaxy S, though, once the Note 8 came out and we finally had a Note flagship in Europe (remember, the Note 5 didn’t come to Europe and the Note 7 got recalled).

Don’t forget: We want to hear about your fond memories and experience with the Galaxy S8 or S8+, so go ahead and get a discussion going in the comments!

Unlocked Galaxy S9 now getting Android Pie update in the US

The unlocked models of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are now being updated to Android Pie in the US. Samsung has taken its sweet time to release the update for the unlocked models, as carrier-locked devices started getting Pie three weeks back. But the wait has finally ended, with multiple reports of the update being available on unlocked units in the last couple of hours.

The nearly 1.8GB Pie update comes with the January 2019 security patch so it’s not exactly the most up-to-date, but the February patch isn’t yet available for most other regions, either. The software version for the S9 and S9+ updates is G960U1UEU3CSA8 and G965U1UEU3CSA8 respectively. You can grab the update over the air from the Settings » Software update menu on your S9 or S9+; as always, the update may not be available for everyone right away, so you might have to check again a little later. We’ll let you know once the firmware for the update is available in our database so you have an alternative means to make the jump to Pie.

To see what Android Pie brings to your Galaxy S9 or S9+, check out our One UI (Android Pie) feature focus series. We are also told that the Galaxy Note 9 should be receiving the Pie update for users who are on the Pie beta in the US. Samsung tech support says the update could roll out sometime today or tomorrow, so Note 9 owners might also want to keep an eye out.

Photos show Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A30 rear with multiple cameras

With the launch of the Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A30 rapidly approaching, more and more information is turning up. Now, both devices can be seen on photos, showing the rear panel and triple and dual camera modules.

Galaxy A30 and A50 photos

Presumably from a service manual come two photos. One shows the Galaxy A50’s rear with its triple camera module. It includes a 25-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens, and 5-megapixel depth sensor. As expected, there is no fingerprint sensor, as it sits under the device’s display.

The Galaxy A30 does have a classic fingerprint sensor, placed next to the dual camera module, also confirming recent rumors. The main sensor has a 16-megapixel resolution and is supported by a 5-megapixel depth sensor.

From the looks of it, both devices are indeed made of Samsung’s glossy 3D material also used on the Galaxy A7. Though we can not be sure yet, this does suggest these phones just might be priced fairly competitively. The higher end of Samsung’s mid-range portfolio will likely be made up of the Galaxy A70 and A90, rather.

samsung galaxy a50 a30 photos

Left: Galaxy A50, right: Galaxy A30

Specs and launch

Over the last months, it has become clear the Galaxy A50 comes with Samsung’s Exynos 9610 SoC, 4GB RAM, and at least 64GB storage. The Galaxy A30 will run on the Exynos 7904 soc with at least 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. Both phones likely pack the same 4000 mAh battery and run Android 9 Pie out of the box.

Whether Samsung launches the first new Galaxy A devices together with the Galaxy S10 remains to be seen. However, it will certainly not be long before at least the A10, A30 and A50 will be made official. Particularly in India, Samsung has started a major push to reinforce its portfolio of affordable devices, but we expect at least the A50 to make its way to other parts of the world.

Have some yellow Galaxy Buds to go with your Canary Yellow Galaxy S10e

We already know by now that Samsung will be offering the new Galaxy Buds as a pre-order gift for the Galaxy S10. Samsung Vietnam has more or less officially confirmed this even before the actual announcement.

Samsung’s new wireless earbuds will be available in a variety of colors. That’s including one that I can best describe as unapologetically yellow. They’ll go nicely with your Canary Yellow Galaxy S10e.

Yellow Galaxy Buds to complement the Canary Yellow Galaxy S10e

We were the first to confirm that the yellow color will only be available for the cheapest Galaxy S10 model. So while you can’t get any other model in Canary Yellow, you can purchase the Galaxy Buds in yellow regardless of your Galaxy S10 model.

Samsung will introduce a new feature with the Galaxy S10 called PowerShare. It will enable users to wirelessly charge other devices using their Galaxy S10. So it will be possible to charge up the carrying case of the Galaxy Buds by simply placing it on the back of your latest Samsung flagship.

Details of pre-order promotions have come out of markets like Russia and Vietnam. It has been confirmed that Samsung will offer the Galaxy Buds as a pre-order incentive in these markets. There’s a strong possibility that similar promotions may also be offered elsewhere.

The Galaxy Buds will be unveiled alongside the Galaxy S10 on February 20 in San Francisco, California. We’ll be on the ground to bring you all of the latest updates from the event. Samsung is also expected to launch the Galaxy Watch Active at the event in addition to the Galaxy Fit fitness tracker.

Samsung to hold multiple Galaxy S10 preview events in India on February 21

The Galaxy S10 unveils on February 20 in San Francisco, with sales expected to begin on March 8. However, people in India can get their hands on the “Next Galaxy” on February 21 itself. Samsung is holding exclusive previews across the country, where it will allow the public to play with the new Galaxy.

Galaxy S10 preview in eight major Indian cities

Samsung is holding exclusive preview for the “Next Galaxy” in eight major cities in India on February 21. People in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Gurgaon, Pune and Chandigarh can get their hands on the new Galaxy just a day after the official announcement in San Francisco. These exclusive preview events will kick off at 05:30 PM IST (01:00 PM CET), and are open for all. No registrations are required.

Samsung has already confirmed that the Samsung 837 in New York City will also allow the public to try their hands on the Galaxy S10 right after the Galaxy Unpacked event. However, you will first need to sign up at Samsung’s official Galaxy Unpacked Livestream webpage.

Alongside the Galaxy S10, Samsung is also expected to take wraps off the new Galaxy Buds, and possibly the foldable smartphone as well. The Galaxy Unpacked event in San Francisco kicks off at 11:00 AM PST (08:00 PM CET) on February 20. It will be live streamed on Samsung’s official website.
