St. Petersburg Fire Rescue finds no link between Galaxy Note 7 and Jeep explosion

Finally, a bit of good news for Samsung. St. Petersburg Fire Rescue have today announced that they were unable to determine whether a faulty Galaxy Note 7 left plugged into the cigarette lighter socket of a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee was the exact cause of the fire that destroyed the vehicle.

The owner of the Jeep, Nathan Dornacher, blamed the handset or sparking the fire right from the word go. However, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue have listed “undetermined” as the official classification of the fire that occurred at 3257 58th Street N on Monday, September 5.

“Due to the destructive nature of the fire, and multiple possibilities that could not be eliminated as to the ignition source, this classification was determined most appropriate,” writes St. Petersburg Fire Rescue in its official report on the matter.

So while it’s still possible that the Galaxy Note 7 was to blame for the car catching fire, there’s no definitive link. It’s not uncommon for a car battery to swell in hot weather, though, so I believe that a minor fire caused by the handset may have sparked the full-scale explosion we saw in the images.

The clear winner here is Samsung as it’s safe to say that it won’t have a nasty court case filed against it for this particular incident as there’s no solid proof that a defunct battery sparked the fire. It’s merely speculation.

Google has granted a special exception to Samsung for the new Note 7′s green battery icon

Now that the Galaxy Note 7 replacement program is well and truly underway, Samsung has detailed how you will be able to identify new units which feature safe batteries. The new Galaxy Note 7 units have a green battery icon that’s displayed in three separate locations which quickly lets the user know that they have a safe device. However, a report suggests that Samsung’s decision to change the color of this system status icon violates Google’s Android compatibility guidelines.

All manufacturers who make Android-powered devices must comply with the Android Compatibility Definition Document which aside from hardware and security also covers interface design. The Themes section of this document lays down the law: “Android device implementations MUST use white for system status icons (such as signal strength and battery level) and notifications issued by the system.”

Previously leaked documents have suggested that Google tests all OEM software updates to ensure compatibility with the document before they’re allowed to be released so one would think that Google would shoot down Samsung’s green battery icon for violating the compatibility requirements. That’s not the case, though. Google’s SVP of Android, Chrome OS and Google Play Hiroshi Lockheimer has confirmed via Twitter that “given extraordinary circumstances” Samsung has been granted a special exception and that they have ensured compatibility with the document by applying a white border around the green battery icon in the new Galaxy Note 7.

Samsung will start its Galaxy Note 7 replacement program in Australia tomorrow

Samsung has announced that it will start its replacement program for the Galaxy Note 7 in Australia tomorrow. This news comes more than two weeks after the manufacturer issued a global recall of the handset following reports of units spontaneously bursting into flames while on charge.

To coincide with the launch of the exchange program, Samsung will also distribute a crucial OTA update for all Galaxy Note 7‘s currently in the hands of customers in the region. The upgrade is believed to improve user safety by limiting the battery’s maximum charge to just 60% of its capacity.

“The safety of our customers is our first priority. For this reason, we are working to identify and execute all appropriate measures to protect customer safety,” said Richard Fink, Vice President IT & Mobile at Samsung Electronics Australia, during a press conference.

“We continue to urge customers who still have an affected Galaxy Note7 to complete a data back-up and factory reset before powering-down the device and returning it to their place of purchase to seek a replacement Galaxy Note7 or alternate remedy of their choice.”

The South Korean company will also roll out an update to all replacement models of the Galaxy Note 7. Unfortuantely, it doesn’t bring any new features to the device. Instead, it merely turns the battery indicator from white to green, indicating that the phone is safe to use and doesn’t pack a faulty cell.

Galaxy Note 7 sales in the US may not resume before October 21

If a new report is to be believed, it may take more than a month for Samsung to resume sales of the Galaxy Note 7 in the United States. The company suspended sales of this handset across the globe on the day it confirmed that there was a battery cell issue and that it was recalling every single unit shipped since the release on August 19. The report claims that Samsung won’t release the Galaxy Note 7 in the US before Friday, October 21. It merits mentioning here that sales of the Galaxy Note 7 will be resumed in South Korea later this week.

The scribe claims to have obtained a planning document which shows that carriers in the US are planning for a relaunch of the Galaxy Note 7 on October 21. This happens to be the very same day LG’s V20 flagship hits the US market. The document is said to mention relaunch date for major carriers in the country – that’s Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint – and only for new sales. Existing customers have already begun receiving new units which have safe batteries.

Samsung hasn’t officially confirmed yet when it’s going to resume sales of the Galaxy Note 7 in the United States. If this date is true then the company might find it hard to keep customers in the market for a new high-end smartphone from considering the iPhone 7, the handset it tried to beat with the Galaxy Note 7 in the first place. Bear in mind that October 21 has been claimed as the relaunch date for the US only, it may be different in other parts of the world.

Samsung starts handing out replacement Galaxy Note 7 inventory in the UK

Samsung has already started shipping replacement inventory of the Galaxy Note 7 in South Korea while some of its retail and carrier partners have also followed through in the United States even though the official date is September 21. Today, the company has officially started handing out safe Galaxy Note 7 units with batteries that are not a fire hazard to customers in the United Kingdom.

Vice president of mobile for Samsung in the UK and Ireland Conor Pierce apologized to customers “for not meeting the standard of product excellence that they have come to expect from Samsung,” and reiterated the company’s plea to take part in the replacement program. “Our absolute priority is the safety of our customers – that’s why we are asking all Galaxy Note 7 customers to act now and exchange today,” he added.

The company is confident that the issue has been “completely resolved” in the replacement inventory that’s now being handed out to customers, earlier today it detailed how you can identify a Galaxy Note 7 with a safe battery. Customers in the United Kingdom should get in touch with the carrier or retailer where they bought their unit from. Samsung has also dedicated a customer support team to the handling of replacements, the team can be reached by calling 0330 7261000 in the UK.

Samsung blames external heat for Galaxy Note 7 fire in China

When the Galaxy Note 7 recall was confirmed a couple of weeks ago, Samsung said that customers in China were not affected by the recall as the handsets sold there featured a battery from Amperex Technology Limited which is now the primary battery supplier for the Galaxy Note 7. The first reports of a Galaxy Note 7 burning up in China came yesterday which was probably the first such report from the People’s Republic. Samsung has conducted an investigation into the incident and found that the handset didn’t burn up due to an issue with the battery.

Samsung has posted a statement on its Chinese website clarifying that “the damage to this product was caused by external heating,” without clarifying the method and manner in which this external heat was applied to the device. Battery supplier Amperex Technology Limited sent out its own statement confirming that the unit did have its battery but “according to the burn marks on the sample, we surmise that the source of the heating comes from outside the battery, and it’s very likely that there was an external factor causing the heating problem.”

It was important for Samsung to quickly look into these report as the replacement inventory that it’s now shipping across the globe features a battery from Amperex Technology Limited. It’s now widely believed that the faulty Galaxy Note 7 batteries were supplied by Samsung’s own battery-making division, the company is no longer sourcing batteries for its latest flagship from Samsung SDI.

A person reportedly familiar with the matter has claimed that the external heat source was possibly a fan heater or an induction oven. This could mean that the person who claimed their Galaxy Note 7 burned up could have done this intentionally, or they could have left it inside an induction oven for some reason, only you can choose what you wish to believe.

Samsung details how you can identify the new Galaxy Note 7

Samsung has finally started replacing Galaxy Note 7 units that have faulty batteries with those that don’t. There’s nothing different about the new stock other than the battery which is now being sourced from a different supplier. Samsung has now detailed the steps through which you can identify the “New Galaxy Note 7.”

As previously reported, units in the new inventory feature a green battery icon. Samsung says that the icon is going to be visible in three locations: the Status Bar, the Always On Display screen as well as the Power Off prompt screen. The retail box of the new inventory also features a black square symbol which immediately lets you know that the handset inside does not have a faulty battery. Samsung has once again reiterated its commitment to the safety of customers and has urged Galaxy Note 7 owners across the globe to immediately participate in the replacement program.

Samsung launches the Galaxy J7 Prime and the Galaxy J5 Prime in India

Samsung has announced two new smartphones today for the Indian market, the Galaxy J7 Prime and the Galaxy J5 Prime. The Galaxy J7 Prime was recently introduced in Vietnam, and its Indian pricing was leaked last week. The Galaxy J5 Prime, however, is a brand new device. Both these devices feature metal unibodies, fingerprint sensors, and the new S Secure and S Battery Planning features.

As we reported earlier today, the Galaxy J7 Prime is priced at INR 18,790 ($280 or €249), while the Galaxy J5 Prime is priced at INR 14,790 ($220 or €196) in India. The former is available for purchase starting today from the company’s official web store, but the Galaxy J5 Prime will be available by the end of this month. Both smartphones will be available in Dynamic Black and Dynamic Gold from all the reputed online and offline stores across the country.

The Galaxy J5 Prime comes with a 5-inch HD TFT display, an 8-megapixel primary camera, and a 5-megapixel secondary camera. Both the cameras on this smartphone have an aperture of f/1.9, in line with other Galaxy J series devices launched this year. It is powered by a quad-core processor (model unknown as of now) and 2GB RAM. There’s 16GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot. It comes with a 2,400 non-removable battery, a fingerprint sensor, dual-SIM card slot, and LTE connectivity.

The Galaxy J7 Prime features a 5.5-inch 1080p TFT display, an Exynos 7870 octa-core processor, 3GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a 13-megapixel primary camera, a 5-megapixel secondary camera, and a 3,300 mAh battery. The front-facing, as well as the rear-facing camera on this device, have an aperture of f/1.9. There’s a microSD card slot, a fingerprint sensor, LTE, dual-SIM card slot, and a microUSB 2.0 port.

The Galaxy J5 Prime and the Galaxy J7 Prime are covered by 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3. Samsung has also introduced S Secure and S Battery Planning features, which have been developed by Samsung India’s R&D center. The former allows users to protect apps, images, and Wi-Fi networks using the fingerprint sensor. The latter is an advanced battery saving feature that preserves battery power for calls and re-routes calls to another number if the phone’s battery is too low.

[Poll] Do you use wireless charging on your Samsung handset?

Wireless charging has been a standard feature on all Samsung flagship handsets over the last couple of years but since the company doesn’t ship a wireless charger with the handset, customers have to spend more in order to take advantage of this feature. That being said, it’s unlikely that everybody buys a wireless charging or one of Samsung’s compatible docking stations to wirelessly charge their handsets. Do vote and let us know how often you use wireless charging on your Samsung handset and share any concerns that you might have in the comments below.

Samsung Z2 receives DG SDPPI certification in Indonesia

Following a successful launch in India and South Africa, the Tizen-powered Samsung Z2 has now received certification from the Directorate General of Resources and Equipment of Post and Information (DG SDPPI) in Indonesia.

For those unaware of the DG SDPPI, it’s essentially the Indonesia’s answer to the FCC. It conducts the final batch of tests, and the overall result determines whether a new electronic product can launch in the region.

What’s particularly interesting about this filing is that the handset has been listed as being locally manufactured in Indonesia. Last year, the company opened an assembly plant in Jakarta to produce low-cost smartphones, so it’s good to see it being put to use.

Seeing as the DG SDPPI has approved Samsung’s request to launch the device in Indonesia, it shouldn’t be too much longer until it hits the shelves. It was recently added to the firm’s website too, suggesting that it’ll arrive sooner rather than later.

Samsung’s flagship flip phone poses yet again in leaked pictures

We exclusively reported about three months ago that Samsung has a flagship flip phone in the pipeline codenamed Veyron. The company recently launched its Galaxy Folder 2 entry-level clamshell handset and now it appears to be set to launch this high-end model. Some images of this handset were leaked online two days ago and we’re now seeing a fresh batch of leaked images which give us a good look at the SM-W2017.

The Samsung SM-W2017′s specifications include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage. It features a 12-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel selfie camera as well as a USB Type-C port. Additional features include a fingerprint sensor on the back of the device as well as NFC which will add support for Samsung Pay to the SM-W2017. The latest leaked images show off this handset in all its glory and reiterate that it’s going to be offered in a gold hue. Samsung hasn’t confirmed as yet when the SM-W2017 is going to be launched and which selected markets it will be sold in.

It’s now illegal to use the Galaxy Note 7 on an airplane

You might have read about the advisory that the US Federal Aviation Administration sent out warning passengers not to use the Galaxy Note 7 on an airplane, the one that wiped over $10 billion from Samsung’s market value. That advisory was issued before Samsung and the US government formally recalled more than one million Galaxy Note 7 handsets in the country. The FAA has sent out another advisory which mentions that as a result of the official recall it’s now illegal to use the Galaxy Note 7 on an airplane.

Consider this to be a reminder from the FAA that it’s now formally illegal to use the Galaxy Note 7 on an airplane. The FAA is calling on passengers to ensure that their units are powered off and are disconnected from any charging equipment. They also have to make sure that any apps which can inadvertently turn on the phone have been disabled. Passengers who are flying with the Galaxy Note 7 are required to keep it in carry-on baggage as the handset can not be placed in checked baggage.
