Samsung ordered to pay $11.6 million to Huawei for patent infringement

Huawei accused Samsung of patent infringement 11 months ago, saying that the Korean company was guilty of unlicensed use of 4G communications technology, user interface software, and operating systems in its smartphones. Huawei sought compensation from Samsung for patent infringement.

Samsung responded to that by saying that it would file its own patent infringement lawsuit against Huawei and two months later, it did just that. Samsung sued Huawei through multiple courts in China over alleged infringement of six of its patents.

The Quanzhou Intermediary Court has ruled in Huawei’s favor and ordered Samsung to pay $11.6 million in damages for patent infringement. This is the first such verdict on several lawsuits that Huawei has filed against Samsung.

Huawei has said that it welcomes the court’s ruling while Samsung says that it’s going to decide on its response after properly reviewing the decision. The court has also ordered Samsung to stop infringing on Huawei’s patents effective immediately.

Samsung emerges as the most trusted brand in India

Samsung has emerged as the most trusted brand in India among consumers in the Brand Trust 2017 report. Samsung moved up 17 positions to grab the first spot. Sony and LG bagged second and third positions, respectively, retaining last year’s positions.

Apple grabbed the fourth position, up 12 places from last year’s results. Dell is positioned at the eighth spot, while Lenovo is placed at the ninth spot. Samsung’s mobile division, which grabbed the first position last year, fell 154 places, mostly due to the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco.

It’s possible to remap Galaxy S8 Bixby button

Samsung is repeatedly highlighting Bixby as one of the major selling points of the Galaxy S8. It’s such a prominent feature on the new flagship that Samsung even gave Bixby a hardware button of its own. If you’re aware of all that Bixby can do and still don’t see much use for it then perhaps you’d like to use the extra hardware key for something else. As it turns out, it’s possible to remap the Galaxy S8 Bixby button.

A video posted on Reddit shows us just how easy it is to remap Galaxy S8 Bixby button so that when pressed, it opens something other than Bixby. It’s possible through a third-party application called All in One Gestures that’s available on the Google Play Store.

We can see in the video that when the Bixby button is pressed, the Google Now homepage comes up instead of Samsung’s new voice assistant. While Samsung didn’t point out that it will be possible to remap this button and doesn’t offer a way to do that by default, it’s clear now that the Bixby button will be open to remapping if you just use the right third-party app.

The question is, will you do it?

Samsung may have already started working on the Galaxy S9

The Galaxy S8 hasn’t even been released yet and a new report out of South Korea claims that the company has already started working on the Galaxy S9. Korean news outlet The Bell reports today that Samsung has started developing key parts like the display screen for the Galaxy S9 almost six months earlier than it did the same thing for the Galaxy S8 last year.

A source quoted in the report says that the display team for the Galaxy S9 started the development work late last month and is aiming to supply samples from mid-April. A month after the display samples come in, the team will then start developing other parts like the modules in phases.

It’s obviously too soon to speculate about the Galaxy S9 right now but seeing as how Samsung has said goodbye to flagship smartphones with smaller displays through the Galaxy S8, perhaps we might see two variants of the Galaxy S9 next year with 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch display sizes like their predecessors. Who knows, it may even have an optical fingerprint sensor.

Galaxy Note 5 Duos Nougat update released

It has only been a few weeks since the Galaxy Note 5 started receiving the Android 7.0 Nougat update. The roll out began in Turkey and has since been expanded to other countries across the globe. Just yesterday, Sprint became the first carrier in the United States to send out Nougat for the Galaxy Note 5 on its network.

Samsung is now rolling out the Galaxy Note 5 Duos Nougat update as well. The handset – model number SM-N9208 – is receiving said update in Indonesia and the Philippines. Firmware version N9208XXU3CQC6 is being rolled out for this dual-SIM handset.

It’s the same Android 7.0 Nougat update that people have come to know and love, bringing a plethora of new features for the device which we’ve detailed in a video review embedded below.

Since major firmware updates are almost always released in phases, it may be a while before all Galaxy Note 5 Duos owners receive Nougat on their handsets.
