Samsung rolling out the August security patch for Galaxy S7 edge

Samsung detailed the August security patch recently. The latest security maintenance release for recent Galaxy smartphones from Samsung couples fixes for 12 vulnerabilities in Samsung’s software with fixes for more than two dozen Android OS vulnerabilities provided by Google.

We reported earlier today that Samsung has already started rolling out the August security patch. It may have released the update before Google as the August security update for the Galaxy J7 Prime was released on the first day of the month.

We’re now seeing the patch trickle down the line for other smartphones. Samsung has started rolling out the August security patch for the Galaxy S7 edge in Mexico.

Firmware version G935FXXU1DQH3 is now being rolled out for the Galaxy S7 edge in Mexico. It comes with the August security patch. This is likely the first firmware release for the Galaxy S7 edge to feature the latest patches.

Now that Samsung has started rolling out the latest security patch, it’s only a matter of time before we see the August security patch being released for more Galaxy smartphones.

This particular firmware update, the one that Samsung has released for the Galaxy S7 edge in Mexico, is available for download now from our firmware section.

Thanks, Henk!

Samsung to broadcast Coldplay’s tour in virtual reality

Samsung continues to bring more and more exciting content to its virtual reality platform. It has now teamed up with Live Nation to broadcast Coldplay’s A Head Full Of Dreams Tour live in virtual reality from Chicago’s Soldier Field.

Coldplay’s A Head Full of Dreams Tour is produced by Live Nation. It’s the No.5 highest grossing tour of all time, according to ticket sales data from Billboard Boxscore. More than 5 million people have come in to see the band perform live.

The company is doing something like this for the first time ever. Coldplay fans across more than 50 countries will be able to stream the live VR broadcast of the Coldplay tour on August 17.

The live VR broadcast will be available on Samsung’s Gear VR headset through the Samsung VR service on August 17 starting at 8:30 pm CT. Those who tune in are promised the best virtual seats in the house.

They will be treated to an electrifying performance backed by pyrotechnics and laser lights. Those who are unable to tune into the broadcast live need not worry. Samsung confirms that a replay of the concert will be available on Samsung VR, albeit for a limited time.

All that’s required to tune into the live VR broadcast is a Gear VR headset with a compatible Samsung smartphone.

Samsung details the August security patch

Samsung is committed to rolling out security updates for its Android-powered devices on a monthly basis. The company bundles them with the monthly security updates that are sent out by Google.

At the start of every month, Samsung posts the details about that month’s Security Maintenance Release on its dedicated security website. The company has now confirmed that it’s rolling out a security maintenance release for its major flagship models as part of its monthly update process.

The latest Android security patch from Google brings fixes for 28 vulnerabilities in the Android operating system. Google notes in its bulletin that two security patch level strings enable “Android partners with the flexibility to more quickly fix a subset of vulnerabilities that are similar across all Android devices.”

The security update that Samsung is going to roll out for its devices now include patches for 12 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE). The patches will help improve the security of Samsung’s mobile devices.

Samsung appears to have already started rolling out the August security update in some markets for one of its devices. It’s only a matter of time before the latest security update starts making its way to more recent flagship models across the globe.

Latest Samsung Internet beta brings new features like night mode

Samsung released the beta version of its Samsung Internet mobile browser earlier this year. It enabled users to try out new features in development before they’re rolled out to the public. Samsung has now released a new beta of its web browser. Samsung Internet Beta v6 brings several new features including a night mode.

One of the biggest features included in the latest beta of Samsung Internet is the night mode. This particular option is proving to be very popular as it helps limit the amount of bright light that users are subjected to.

The night mode in Samsung Internet can be activated from the main menu or from the floating. However, it’s evident that the night mode needs a bit more work, there are some noticeable issues with the contrast that sully what should have been a simpler user experience.

Samsung Internet Beta v6 brings a “Sync with Samsung Cloud” option which lets users back up and restore their bookmarks and preferences. Experimental flags like Web Bluetooth, WebGL 2 and Gamepad extensions have been added as well. They can be enabled from Internet://flags.

The beta launches to a new splash page which suggests all of the different ad blocking extensions that users can install. Samsung Internet has long had support for ad blocking extensions so the new splash page appears to be for the purpose of notifying more users that this functionality exists.

There’s a new accessibility section which lists the high contrast mode. The contrast is clearer and there’s no dark mask so it looks better than the night mode but certainly leaves room for Samsung to polish it up before rolling it out to the stable version of Samsung Internet.

Samsung Internet Beta v6 is now available for download from the Google Play Store.

[Poll] How is your Galaxy S8’s performance holding up?

It was back when it announced the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge that Samsung accepted it had been pushing software full of lag and stutter down its consumers’ throats for many years. Well, the company didn’t say it outright, but it did tell us that it had finally optimized its software, that the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge would not have the hiccups TouchWiz had become infamous for. TouchWiz isn’t completely cured of its performance problems, and it still can’t maintain the fluidity of some competing devices, especially as the months go by and a device gets filled by apps and user data.

With the Galaxy S8, things aren’t so bad, and the phone continues to perform as a flagship should. That said, there can be a few instances where the phone can lag or stutter, and these instances can certainly be a nuisance considering the kind of cash one has to cough up to buy a Galaxy S8 or S8+. It’s been more than three months since the phone was made available for purchase across the globe, and we here at SamMobile have been wondering what everyone thinks about their S8’s performance.

Is it as good for you as it was when you started using the phone, has it slowed down over time, or did you find it has never performed as well as you would have thought it would? Whatever your thoughts, let us know in the comments, and also by voting through the poll!

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Galaxy Note 8 said to feature force touch

If a new report out of South Korea is believed, the Galaxy Note 8 is going to feature force touch. The technology will enable the handset to respond in a different way to varying amounts of pressure applied to the screen. This will provide users with an additional way to interact with their smartphone.

The force touch technology is commonly known as 3D Touch. Many manufacturers have implemented their own versions of this technology. It enables the device to provide additional functionality which can be triggered in response to pressure applied to the screen. Samsung introduced a version of this technology with the Galaxy S8 earlier this year.

The physical home button has been replaced by a pressure sensitive home button. Users can apply pressure on the virtual home button and receive tactile feedback. They can even push on the bottom of the screen when the virtual home button is hidden by an app to activate it.

The Galaxy Note 8 is going to ditch the home button as well the pressure sensitive alternative will be onboard. According to the report, users will also be able to press down on the display to open a hidden menu that will have shortcuts to different features. It may be the Air Command menu that has been a permanent fixture on previous Galaxy Note handsets.

Samsung is due to unveil the Galaxy Note 8 on August 23. We’ll find out more details about the handset then. It’s expected to release the Galaxy Note 8 on September 15.

Samsung’s roadmap for Galaxy Note 8 sales revealed

Samsung is due to unveil the Galaxy Note 8 on August 23. Once it’s done with the event it will get down to the business of selling the new flagship smartphone. A new report out of South Korea claims to bring us the company’s roadmap for Galaxy Note 8 sales.

The report reiterates that Samsung is going to release the Galaxy Note 8 on September 15. It’s claimed that the duration of pre-order will be shorter than it was for the Galaxy S8 earlier this year.

Customers in South Korea will reportedly be able to pre-order the Galaxy Note 8 between September 1 and September 10. The pre-order period is one day less than it was for the Galaxy S8.

The Galaxy S8 set a new pre-order record for Samsung. The company saw more than one million pre-orders being placed for the Galaxy S8 in South Korea. It remains to be seen if the Galaxy Note 8 will be able to equal or break this record.

The mobile carriers in South Korea expect significant demand for the new flagship phablet given that it’s essentially the first new Note handset in two years. Last year’s flagship, the Galaxy Note 7, had to be recalled and discontinued due to a defective battery.

Pre-order activations will reportedly begin in South Korea on September 11 and run through to September 14. The pre-activation dates are actually one day longer than they were for the Galaxy S8.

This will help Samsung minimize any inconvenience for customers by preparing for a delay in activation due to gaps in supply and demand for particular colors.

Samsung will officially release the Galaxy Note 8 on September 15. Customers who didn’t place a pre-order will be able to purchase the new flagship smartphone then. Samsung is likely to follow this roadmap in other launch markets as well.
