Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge tip: Using the handsets to listen out for crying babies and the doorbell

I bet you didn’t know that the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge bundle a nifty feature that listens out for a crying baby or doorbell, then sends you an alert when either of the two sounds are detected. Think I’m yanking your arm? Well, you’ll be happy to hear that I’m not. Now you’re probably asking yourself: “What’s the point of this functionality? It seems pretty useless.” That’s what I thought at first, but after playing around with it for a while, it quickly because apparent when it might be useful.

Picture yourself in this scenario: You’re sitting in the living room with your friends watching the Super Bowl. The TV is ramped up to the highest volume; your buddies are laughing away, and you all fail to hear the pizza delivery driver ring the doorbell. Thankfully, the Galaxy S7′s ultra-sensitive microphone, which has been specially tuned to pick up high-pitch sounds such as a doorbell, has recognized the fact that someone has rung the bell and sends you a notification prompting you to answer the door.

Want to give it a go? Here’s how:

  1. Head into Settings.
  2. Select Accessibility.
  3. Navigate into Hearing.
  4. Tap on Sound Detectors.
  5. Flick the toggles from Off to On for Baby Crying Detector and Doorbell Detector.
  6. Hit the Back button to save your changes.

That’s really all there is to it. Now when the doorbell rings, you’ll receive a notification on your handset informing you that someone’s there just in case you didn’t hear it. If you do happen to run into any issues along the way, be sure to let us know in the comments section below or over on our Twitter page and we’ll do our very best to get you back on track.

Eric Schmidt uses an iPhone and Galaxy S7, but claims the latter is better

Executive Chairman of Alphabet, Eric Schmidt, has today admitted to owning both an iPhone and Galaxy S7 during the Startup Fest in Amsterdam, but before he could come under criticism from Android fans all over the world, he quickly added that he prefers Samsung’s offering as it has “better battery life. And those of you who are iPhone users know I’m right.”

It’s a little strange to think that the Executive Chairman of the company that grew Android into what it is today owns a handset from its main competitor, but over the course of the past few years Google has worked tirelessly to bring its core services to iOS. Some of them even deliver an almost identical experience across all platforms, which means there’s no real reason for Schmidt to use Android in order to access his Docs on the go.

I think it’s great, however, that Schmidt has publicly praised the Galaxy S7′s battery life. I’ve conducted my own tests pitting the handset’s 3,000mAh batter against the iPhone 6S’ 1,715mAh cell to find that it lasts up to 8-hours longer in certain circumstances, such as when streaming an entire season of Game of Thrones or casting content from YouTube to my TV.

Galaxy Note 7 to follow Galaxy Note 5, source says

Waiting for your chance to grab a Galaxy Note 6? Well, you may be in line waiting for a phone that’ll arrive under a different name.

According to a credible source out of Korea, Samsung has decided to rename its next-generation Galaxy Note device as the Galaxy Note 7, not the Galaxy Note 6. The company’s rationale behind the decision pertains to the association consumers have with the number “7″ and Samsung’s launch of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge: “When Galaxy Note 6 that has its model number lower than Galaxy S7, which is the newest model, is released, it can give out a feeling that it is an outdated phone,” a high-ranking official said.

This would be the first time in the Galaxy Note series that Samsung would skip over a generation number for marketing purposes, but Samsung has done this with its Tizen-powered “Z” smartphone series, with the company skipping over the Z2 for the Z3 after introducing the first Z smartphone. Samsung has even trademarked the Galaxy S6 Note moniker, so the company could, like the Z series, could come back to the number “6″ in the Note series at a later date and time. As for the Tizen-powered Z2, we reported some time ago that Samsung intends to bring a phone with this presumed last-generation number to market this year.

One other piece of pertinent information regarding the next Galaxy pertains to the design. Samsung intends to bring the dual-curved edges to the Galaxy Note 7 (we know, it’s still Galaxy Note 6 in mind and heart), bringing the device’s design up to par with that of the current-generation Galaxy S7 edge that was unveiled back on February 21st and matching the expectations that we’ve had for the upcoming device (just think of it as “Six Appeal” for a device with the number “7″ in it. This means that the next-generation Note will be, as many presume, the Galaxy Note 7 edge when it is announced by Samsung.

As for the release date of the “Galaxy Note 7 edge,” a name that we’re holding with some skepticism for now, Samsung could launch the device in either early or mid-August. The Korean giant announced the Galaxy Note 5 on August 13th in New York City and launched the phone worldwide on August 21st. The company may look to have an even earlier launch this year in order to put its smartphone sales further ahead of Apple’s pending iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus launch in September.

Samsung might file a counter-suit against Huawei in latest legal battle

Huawei announced yesterday that it has filed lawsuits against Samsung in the United States and China seeking compensation for alleged patent infringement by the Korean giant. Samsung is most definitely going to fight Huawei on this but instead of just replying to its accusations in court it looks like Samsung might file a counter-suit against Huawei.

In its lawsuit filed in a San Francisco federal court, Huawei claims that Samsung has infringed on as many as 11 patents related to communications networks and software to enable Long Term Evolution networks on its 4G devices. Huawei is not seeking a ban on the sale of Samsung handsets in the United States but does claim billions of dollars in damages, a precise amount and other conditions for a settlement have not been disclosed. Huawei has filed a similar lawsuit in Shenzhen People’s Court in China.

Ahn Seong-ho, the head of Samsung’s intellectual property division, told reporters following a weekly meeting of Samsung CEOs in Seoul that the company is going to take countermeasures, “including a lawsuit” against Huawei. A spokesperson for Samsung declined to further elaborate the company’s position on this matter, adding that the company is reviewing the case.

Samsung launches Galaxy Tab Iris with iris recognition technology for government and businesses in India

We’ve long heard that Samsung is going to release consumer devices with iris recognition technology and we very well might see that happen with the Galaxy Note 6 later this year. Before it rolls out iris recognition technology in a flagship handset, Samsung appears to have decided to showcase it in a product with limited scale. The company today announced the Galaxy Tab Iris, a tablet equipped with iris recognition technology meant only for the government and businesses in India.

Aside from being a conventional Samsung tablet, the Galaxy Tab Iris is also an integrated and highly secure biometric device that’s ready for Aadhar authentication. Aadhaar is a 12 digit individual identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India on behalf of the government, it serves as a proof of identity and address for individuals anywhere in India. Any individual in India who is a resident and meets the verification process can enrol for Aadhaar.

The Galaxy Tab Iris will also be useful in providing paperless and cashless services in various industries like banking as well as eGovernance services like taxation, passport, education and healthcare. It will support government benefit programs and allow banks and financial institutions to easily process an individual’s authentication, regardless of any language or literacy barriers. An Identity SDK is also being offered so that app developers can leverage the iris recognition technology to build apps for payments, financial inclusion, and authentication.

The tablet looks and feels like a quintessential Samsung tablet. It features a 7-inch display, 8GB storage with microSD card support, a 5-megapixel rear camera for pictures and document scanning, USB OTB Host support, 3,600mAh battery as well as support for 14 local languages. It has a dual-eye scanner for contactless iris scanning and greater security.

Samsung has showcased its iris recognition technology properly for the first time with the Galaxy Tab Iris and this is a good sign. Its latest trademark registrations already hint that the Galaxy Note 6 will feature an iris scanner and this latest development only makes it seem more likely that the company’s next flagship will be its first to feature an iris scanner.

Samsung changes its mind, says it’s not dumping Android Wear for now

It was reported yesterday that Samsung has confirmed that it’s not going to make any Android Wear-powered smartwatches anymore. Some unnamed Samsung executives were cited in a Fast Company report saying that the company had no Android Wear smartwatches in the pipeline and that it wasn’t planning to make any in the future. Samsung has now clarified those comments and it looks like the company has had a change of heart.

In a statement provided to Engadget, Samsung says that it disagrees with Fast Company’s “interpretation,” and that it has not made any announcement concerning Android Wear, adding that “we have not changed our commitment to any of our platforms.” It’s not like the latest response from the company is any indication of it making new Android Wear-powered smartwatches, but what it does show is that Samsung would like to keep the possibility open which is why it’s not dumping Android Wear completely. It may or may not make one in the future. Samsung’s first and only Android Wear smartwatch was the Gear Live that arrived some two years ago. Since then all Samsung smartwatches have been powered by Tizen OS, including the very impressive Gear S2.

Here is the Galaxy C5 in gold, pink gold, gray and silver

Not much mystery remains regarding Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy C5, after a set of product renders surfaced earlier today. Now, we’ve managed to get our hands on even more images of that device, showing it in silver, pink and grey color schemes.

The Galaxy C5 is set to be unveiled tomorrow, though apart from its looks nearly all specifications are known as well. The device packs a 5.2-inch, 1080p display, running on an octa-core Snapdragon 617 SoC and 4GB of RAM. There’s a 16-megapixel camera on the back and a massive 8-megapixel selfie shooter on the front of the phone. Power is provided by a 2,600 mAh battery.

Though recent rumors pointed at a price hovering around $330, we will probably have to wait for the Galaxy C5 to go on sale to know its final, official pricing. For now, there are no hints of the device being released outside of China, so don’t hold your breath if you’re looking to spend dollar or euros on the Galaxy C5.
