Samsung’s Q3 2020 earnings reveal its highest-ever quarterly revenue

Earlier this month, Samsung had posted its earnings estimates for Q3 2020. Now, the company has published its final numbers for the latest quarter. Despite the pandemic, the South Korean tech giant has come out like a winner, posting its highest-ever quarterly revenue.

Samsung said that it saw a significant increase in consumer demand for smartphones, computers, TVs, and other devices. Even its display panel and semiconductor businesses did well during the period. The company reported that its sales climbed 8% from last year to KRW 66.96 trillion (around $59 billion). Its operating profit jumped 59% from Q3 2019 to KRW 12.35 trillion (around $10.09 billion) and its net profit rose to KRW 9.36 trillion (around $8.2 billion).

The South Korean conglomerate’s revenue was higher than market expectations. Due to the COVID-19 scenario, Samsung said that consumers purchased more smartphones and other consumer electronics. The company’s highest-ever quarterly revenue is also due to its efficient cost management, one-time gains from its display and chip businesses, and the launch of flagship products like the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

The company’s mobile sales increased by 6.1% from the previous year to KRW 29.81 trillion (around $26.3 billion). Compared to Q2 2020, its smartphone business showed a whopping 51% jump as markets opened up around the world during Q3 2020. Samsung also attributed higher sales to the increased demand for mass-market products (Galaxy A and Galaxy M series smartphones) in markets like India.

Samsung’s profits could decline in the current quarter due to the launch of the iPhone 12 series. The company also expects to receive fewer memory chip orders during the fourth quarter. While the company has warned about a possible decline in profits for Q4 2020, it expects 2021 to be better for the electronics industry.

[Poll] Would you even care if Samsung removed chargers from the box?

Samsung didn’t waste any time in pulling Apple’s leg when the latter announced that its new iPhones won’t ship with a charger and earphones in the box. A new report suggests that it may be thinking about doing the same thing.

Korean media is of the view that the Galaxy S21 series may not include either accessory in the box. Even if the charger is retained, they fully expect Samsung to ditch the earphones. We may have seen a trailer for that with the Galaxy Note 20 series in the US. Samsung doesn’t ship earphones with its new flagship in the US but does give users one for free if they ask customer support.

Apple put an environmental spin on its decision but that’s a bit too convenient. This will obviously increase the company’s margins on the product and also spur sales of chargers and wireless earbuds. Samsung wouldn’t want to leave that extra money on the table as well.

How would you feel about it, though? Are you fine with not getting chargers and earphones as long as Samsung’s flagships get a noticeable price cut? Or if environmental benefits are tangible enough? Would you just not care either way? Vote below and share your thoughts with us by leaving a comment.

The Galaxy Z Flip 2 is apparently back on track for a spring 2021 release

Exactly one month ago we came across a rumor passed along by @DSCCRoss on Twitter suggesting that Samsung may have delayed the launch of the Galaxy Z Flip 2 to late 2021. At the same time, we explained why you probably shouldn’t make any plans based on this particular rumor, and today we’re hearing a different narrative from the same source.

According to the new rumor, the Galaxy Z Flip 2 won’t be delayed to Q3 2021 after all. It won’t be released along with the Galaxy S21 series either, which we have already exclusively revealed to be launching in January, but instead it will debut in spring next year. In other words, Samsung is likely to adopt its usual yearly flagship launch schedule for the Galaxy Z Flip series. The original model was introduced in February 2020 and it was followed by a 5G variant in August.

So far it’s business as usual

The Galaxy Z Flip 2 is expected to feature 4G and 5G connectivity from the first day of availability but even though we have our own wishlist for the device, there’s not much else known about this mysterious foldable sequel. Nevertheless, @DSCCRoss claims to have the scoop on some of the impressive upgrades the Galaxy Z Flip 2 will receive but details are lacking. We’ll keep you up to speed as soon as more details come to light.

Until then, feel free to let us know if you’re a foldable phone owner of if you have an interest in this technology/form factor. What’s your take on the original Galaxy Z Flip and what would convince you to buy the Galaxy Z Flip 2 next year? Leave a comment below.

Samsung QLED TV becomes the official TV of the Los Angeles Rams

After being recognized as the Official Mobile, TV and Display partner of Hollywood Park USA last month, Samsung Electronics announced today a new partnership with professional American football team, the Los Angeles Rams. As a result of this collaboration, Samsung has become the official QLED TV brand for the LA Rams as well as a presenting partner for the Rams video series, Coach Speak.

In addition, the partnership implies that Samsung is the Official Television Provider for the Rams Studio, with QLED TVs being provided at the Rams training facility for coaches, executives, and staff. Furthermore, a Samsung QLED-branded tarp will be featured at all the LA Rams home games that will take place at SoFi Stadium.

Samsung is bringing the games closer to fans

The Samsung-LA Rams partnership couldn’t have come at a better time considering the fact that American football fans are stuck watching the games from home. As impressive as SoFi Stadium is together with the world’s largest LED videoboard supplied by Samsung, football fans are unable to attend live matches in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In other words, football fans are watching the games from the comfort of their homes, and what better way to do this other than using a Samsung QLED TV? At least this is the marketing narrative surrounding the partnership with the LA Rams. In a time when being at SoFi Stadium in person is unfortunately not possible, there is no better way to experience Rams football than on a Super Big Samsung QLED TV said Grace Dolan, VP, Home Entertainment Integrated Marketing of Samsung Electronics America.

Samsung reveals Galaxy A42 5G price and release details for Taiwan

Samsung is preparing to release the Galaxy A42 5G in various markets and the company announced today that the affordable 5G device will be available in Taiwan from early November. Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy A42 5G in Taiwan will be available in three color options for the suggested retail price of NT$ 12,990 ($453).

Much like in many other markets, it turns out that the Galaxy A series is very popular in Taiwan where a survey conducted in September revealed that 3 out of 5 best-selling smartphone models in the country carried the Galaxy A badge. But the Galaxy A42 5G is not just another new addition to the series; it’s also Samsung’s most affordable 5G smartphone to date, and it will support Taiwan’s full 5G band.

Samsung hasn’t revealed an exact release date for the Galaxy A42 5G in Taiwan, aside from the early November timeframe, but in other markets the device is scheduled to hit the shelves on October 30 so it’s likely that the Taiwanese release won’t lag too far behind.

Quad cameras and a large AMOLED display

One of the biggest selling points of the Galaxy A42 5G is precisely the fact that it’s a mid-range device with 5G connectivity, but of course, it can’t rise to the popularity of the Galaxy A series on 5G support alone.

The Galaxy A42 5G features a large 6.6-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1600 by 720, an under-display fingerprint scanner, and it’s powered by the Snapdragon 750G chipset paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in expandable storage.

The phone also features a quad camera setup comprising a 48MP main shooter, an 8MP ultra-wide sensor, a 5MP depth camera and a 5MP macro lens. Selfie enthusiasts have a 20MP camera to work with and the phone relies on a 5,000mAh battery with 15W fast charging. Samsung will launch the Galaxy A42 5G in Taiwan in three color options including white, gray, and black, and each flavor has a multi-shade pattern on the back panel.

Galaxy S20 FE’s biggest problem hasn’t been fixed yet

Reports about the Galaxy S20 FE touchscreen issues came to light not long after Samsung released its budget flagship. Users complained about the 6.5-inch touchscreen becoming unresponsive or reading the inputs erroneously. This caused jittery scrolling, lag in animations, ghost touches and frustrating lag when using pinch to zoom.

Samsung has since released two firmware updates for the Galaxy S20 FE to address the issues. However, many Galaxy S20 FE owners are still experiencing these issues, even if they don’t appear to be as intense as they were initially.

Galaxy S20 FE’s biggest issue still remains

The most recent firmware, G78xxXXU1ATJ5, was released with fixes for the touchscreen issues. It did improve touch responsiveness somewhat but the problems haven’t all gone away. We continue to experience issues with pinch to zoom and jittery scrolling our unit as well.

Reddit is full of complaints from users who continue to face these issues even after the latest update was installed. Pinch to zoom appears to be the most prevalent of the multi-touch issues that users are reporting. It’s irksome for users who do image editing on their phone because flawless pinch to zoom is crucial for a good user experience in that particular scenario.

While the previous update reduced the intensity of the jittery scrolling, it’s still hard to miss. Stopping and lifting your finger after scrolling in an app like Twitter, for example, is still registered as a movement and that’s what creates the jitter. We have experienced all of this on our own device as well.

Naturally, people are now wondering if this issue can be fixed at all. Some believe that Samsung may be trying to fix a hardware problem with a software workaround. There’s some talk of people wanting to or already returning the Galaxy S20 FE. It’s important for Samsung to be more forthcoming with information about what’s going on and if these issues can indeed be fixed.

We have reached out to Samsung for a comment on the matter and will update when we hear back.

New Galaxy Watch Active 2 update brings another Galaxy Watch 3 feature

There’s a new Galaxy Watch Active 2 update rolling out today which brings another feature over from the Galaxy Watch 3. Samsung has already brought many features from its latest smartwatch to the Galaxy Watch Active 2. The new running coach, running analysis, VO2 measurement and fall detection are just some of the features that have been ported.

With this latest update, the capabilities of last year’s wearable device has been further improved. The update’s roll out started in South Korea first. Users across the globe will soon be able to download it as well.

More Galaxy Watch Active 3 features inbound

Samsung is now rolling out firmware version R820XXU1TJ5 for the Galaxy Watch Active 2. Weighing in at just over 60MB, the update enables the device to provide voice guidance during exercises through a paired headset.

The watch will chime in with helpful tips from time to time. Similarly, voice guidance has also been added for the accumulated distance and heart rate when recording running or biking exercise automatically.

A minor user interface change has been made as well. The second hand will no longer be displayed on the watch face when the Always on Display is set. Some general housekeeping has been done as well to improve the stability and performance of the software.

Samsung has started rolling out this new Galaxy Watch Active 2 update. You should expect to receive an update notification on your device in the near future, if you haven’t already.
