Samsung increases lead over Intel in chip sales

Samsung’s semiconductor business has been performing exceptionally well in the last couple of years. The Korean company has posted record profits in the last few quarters, primarily due to the stellar performance by its semiconductor division. The fact that Samsung dethroned Intel as the largest chipmaker in the world in 2017 demonstrates its rapid growth in the sector.

Samsung outsold Intel by 23 percent

There were reports questioning Samsung’s ability to sustain the explosive growth of its semiconductor business. At least for now, Samsung seems to be showing no signs of slow down. Last month, the company once again posted impressive quarterly earnings with a major contribution from its semiconductor division. Adding to that evidence is the Q1 2018 sales report from market research firm IC Insights which also shows Samsung’s increased lead over Intel in chip sales.

According to the published numbers, Samsung outsold the second-ranked Intel by 23 percent in Q1 2018 with $18.6 billion in chip sales, compared to Intel’s $15.8 billion. Samsung registered an impressive 43% YoY growth while Intel’s number stood at 11%. TSMC, SK Hynix, and Micron occupied the next three positions in the top five respectively.

The report attributes Samsung’s impressive performance to the demand for DRAM and NAND flash memory. Out of the total Q1 semiconductor sales by Samsung, memory chips accounted for 83 percent, up from 77 percent last year. Samsung’s rival memory chip vendors Micron Technology and SK Hynix also benefited from the market condition with both of them registering 49% YoY increase in sales.

Samsung does expect demand in the memory chip market to soften overall in the coming quarters which could have an impact on the company’s earnings from its semiconductor division. An important distinction to be kept in mind is that Samsung has been able to reach this position on the back of memory chips and not microprocessors.

On the other hand, Intel ruled the semiconductor market for more than two decades primarily because of its memory processors. A slowdown in the memory chip market might mean that Intel could take back its crown from Samsung in the future.

Galaxy A6 is getting the May 2018 security update in India ahead of launch

Samsung’s holding an event in India on May 21st to launch a new phone with an Infinity display, and while the company isn’t saying what device – or devices – it will actually unveil, it may be focusing on the Galaxy A6 and Galaxy A6+ instead of the Galaxy J4 or Galaxy J6. Case in point? Well, we are already seeing Galaxy A6 firmware with the May 2018 security patch for India in our database. The original firmware for India (and other markets) that went live a few weeks ago had the April security patch, and an update for the device is a clear indication that Samsung is bringing it to the country soon.

Galaxy A6 is a more impressive package anyway

It would also make sense for Samsung to put the focus on the Galaxy A6 rather than the Galaxy J6, given the latter doesn’t offer anything special other than an Infinity display. The Galaxy A6 (and Galaxy A6+), meanwhile, have an 18:5:9 display and also high-resolution rear and front cameras, which are features some of the competition – Oppo and Vivo, for example – have long focused on in India’s mid-range segment. The A6+, in particular, would be a huge draw thanks to its 24-megapixel front camera, which would be a first in terms of the megapixel count for front cameras on the Korean giant’s smartphones.

It would also explain the “To Infinity and More” tagline Samsung has used for the invites it has sent to the press, if you include features such as Dolby Atmos (over headphones) and full Samsung Pay support, none of which is on offer with the Galaxy J4 or Galaxy J6. Not that it’s out of the question that Samsung will launch either (or both) of these J series phones at the same event. The company certainly needs to bring the Infinity display to a budget smartphone in India following the introduction of a new competitor earlier this week, so at least the J6 should be making an appearance next week.

Last but not the least, this continues Samsung’s new tradition of bringing security updates to mid-range and budget phones ahead of its flagship offerings. We guess it’s a fair trade considering major OS upgrades come to flagship devices first, even though that’s something the company doesn’t follow to the letter all the time (just ask Galaxy S7 and S7 edge owners).

Galaxy S10 presents Samsung an opportunity to revamp smartphone design

Flagship smartphone design has largely remained the same over the past few years. High-end devices from almost all OEMs feel the same as they are the same blocks of metal and glass with little to differentiate them aside from the placement of rudimentary staples such as the buttons, cameras and ports.

Smartphone design has progressed significantly in the last decade but it’s not as exciting as it once was. Consumers that are now being asked to pay almost $1,000 for a flagship device often don’t feel the need to spend that much particularly when the new device looks a lot like its predecessor. That’s one of the reasons why we keep on hearing that the Galaxy S9 sales are less than the Galaxy S8 despite Samsung’s claims that it will outsell last year’s flagship.

With the Galaxy S10, though, Samsung has an opportunity to revamp it get us all excited about smartphone design once again. It’s going to be the 10th anniversary model of the Galaxy S series and it would only be fitting that Samsung think outside the box for this one to properly commemorate this incredible milestone. Early reports suggest that this is what Samsung intends to do and will thus finally debut technologies like the in-house developed ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor. Call it wishful thinking but I believe that it can do more.

There are many devices on the market today with a higher screen-to-body ratio than the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+’s 83.6 percent and 84.2 percent respectively. Granted that it’s the Chinese OEMs who are primarily pushing the envelope here but the fact remains that someone is doing it while Samsung is not. Some of them have been able to achieve a higher ratio because they chose to adopt the notch which is something that Android OEMs appear to be gravitating towards en masse. We have already discussed that Samsung doesn’t stand to gain anything by adopting an iPhone X-style notch and there are no indications that it plans to do that for the Galaxy S10.

The issue with almost all Android flagships looking much the same is only exacerbated by the notch which makes them seem even more similar. That’s not really an ideal situation for the market as a whole and many certainly feel that something should be done. This is where Samsung can take the mantle and push the industry in a new direction.

Look closely from the front at the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S9 and you’ll notice that the side bezels aren’t immediately noticeable thanks to the dual-edge curved Infinity Display which effortlessly spills over from both sides. In my opinion, one major step that Samsung can take to open a new chapter of smartphone design is to stretch the display as much as possible at the top and bottom and then pair that with curved bezels on both ends so that they essentially hide away. This would make it seem like the Galaxy S10 has an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 100 percent while still retaining a bezel which is still very much needed.

However, that would present its own set of problems that Samsung would have to tackle. It would have to find a place for the front camera, iris scanner and other components, for example. The technology isn’t advanced enough for Samsung to place these components under the glass itself so it may have to think out of the box here as well. Perhaps it can adopt a sliding mechanism like the MIX 4 concept from Doogee or have a motorized module that glides up from the top when required and sits flush with the frame when it’s not. Again, it’s wishful thinking, but it’s within Samsung’s abilities to do all of this.

Most fans might not mind if Samsung decides to make the Galaxy S10 slightly thicker than its predecessor to ensure that all of the required ports and the all-important 3.5mm headphone jack are retained. The increased internal space would also allow the company to put in a bigger battery.

So if Samsung follows through, the Galaxy S10 would be a flagship device with the latest internals, the highest screen-to-body ratio, a bigger battery and an amazing camera experience. Even if it decided to charge customers a bit more for that handset, Samsung might find a lot more takers for it than it has for the Galaxy S9.

It would also definitively close its decade-old design chapter and mark the dawn of a new era with the 10th anniversary flagship. It’s a change that the mobile market needs as well to cut through the complacency in smartphone design and get customers excited about it once again. It would be a good start to 2019 for Samsung, a year when it’s already expected to capture our imagination with its much-awaited foldable smartphone, which would also mark the start of a new chapter for the company.

What do you think about this, should Samsung really push the envelope on design with the Galaxy S10 and particularly push for the highest screen-to-body ratio? Would that be something that gets you excited about owning the company’s next flagship? Let us know in the comments below.

Galaxy A3 (2017) Oreo update now rolling out in more countries

It has been three weeks since we first reported that the Galaxy A3 (2017) was finally receiving the Oreo update. Samsung released the Galaxy A3 (2017) Oreo update in Russia first and the rollout was initially limited to the country but the update is now making its way to more countries.

Galaxy A3 (2017) owners in select European countries will now be able to install Android 8.0 Oreo on their devices. It’s only a matter of time now before Samsung expands the availability of this update even further.

Galaxy A3 (2017) Oreo update

It wasn’t surprising when Samsung first released the Oreo update for Galaxy A3 (2017) in Russia given that it was also the first market to get the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the 2016 A series handsets.

Samsung has now started rolling out firmware version A320FLXXU2CRD4 for the Galaxy A3 (2017) model number SM-A320FL in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. We have the firmware files available for download via our firmware section, just click on the relevant country name to access them. The firmware isn’t being rolled out over-the-air in these markets just yet so a manual install via PC is required at this point in time.

The firmware includes the April 2018 security patch. It bumps up the handset to Android Oreo and brings all of the features that are part and parcel of the release. We already have detailed coverage on all of the new features included in Android 8.0 Oreo and Samsung has put up a useful infographic which explains the changes that it has made with Samsung Experience 9.0.

Samsung will gradually release the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Galaxy A3 (2017) in more markets across the globe in the weeks to come so owners in other markets still have to wait for quite some time before they can get a taste of Oreo on their handsets.

Samsung sends invites for possible Galaxy J6 and Galaxy J4 launch

We have been following the development of a couple of new mid-range smartphones from Samsung. There have already been countless leaks related to the Galaxy J6 and the Galaxy J4. We exclusively leaked live images of the Galaxy J6 just a few days ago and the pace of other leaks suggested that the official launch wasn’t that far off.

Samsung has now started sending invites to the press for an event on May 21. The event will take place in Mumbai, India and its where Samsung is likely going to launch the Galaxy J6 and Galaxy J4 officially.

Galaxy J6 and Galaxy J4 launch

The event invite comes with the “Say Hello to Infinity and More” tagline which points to the fact that at least one of the two devices has an Infinity Display. We already know that it’s the Galaxy J6 that has an Infinity Display, albeit a flat panel.

We exclusively revealed the specs of the Galaxy J6 and Galaxy J4 last week. The Galaxy J6 has a 5.6-inch AMOLED display with an Exynos 7870 processor and up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage depending on the market. It also features a 13-megapixel rear and 8-megapixel front camera with an LED flash for each, LTE, dual-SIM support, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a 3,000mAh battery. It will ship with Android 8.0 Oreo.

The Galaxy J4 will not have an Infinity Display so customers will have to make do with a standard 5.5-inch display and it’s not clear as yet if it’s an AMOLED or LCD panel. It will be powered by Samsung’s Exynos 7570 processor with up to 3GB of RAM. It features a 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera with an LED flash next to both, LTE and dual-SIM support and a 3,000mAh battery. It will also run Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box.

It’s also expected that Samsung India will be confirming the pricing and availability for the mid-range Galaxy A6 and Galaxy A6+ which were recently announced by the company. Stay tuned for all of the updates from the event on May 21.

Bixby 2.0 on Galaxy Note 9 will have quicker response times

Samsung first talked about Bixby 2.0 late last year when it said that the next major update for its digital assistant will be a “bold reinvention” of the Bixby platform. Samsung is working with the idea of transforming it from a basic digital assistant into an intelligence tool.

We heard from the CEO of Samsung’s mobile division DJ Koh three months ago that Samsung is going to introduce Bixby 2.0 with the Galaxy Note 9. This has now been reiterated by Gray G. Lee, the head of the AI Center under Samsung Research.

Bixby 2.0 on Galaxy Note 9

At a press conference to announce Samsung’s vision for artificial intelligence, Lee confirmed that Samsung is going to introduce Bixby 2.0 with its upcoming flagship smartphone that’s due in the second half of this year.

Samsung’s vision for artificial intelligence has five directions – user-centric, always learning, always there, always helpful and always safe. To further improve its AI platform and technologies, Samsung will continue to set up AI centers in different parts of the world and will also seek mergers and acquisitions of promising AI companies.

He didn’t go into a lot of details about the improvements that the updated platform will bring but did add that it features improved natural language processes, enhanced noise resistance capability and quicker response times.

Koh had previously explained that Samsung’s goal with Bixby 2.0 is to provide users with a wider scope of voice-assistance features so it’s going to be quite feature-heavy. With Bixby 1.0, Samsung was merely focused on rolling out its digital assistant swiftly which made it difficult to expand the ecosystem at the same time.

Bixby 2.0 will also be the foundation of Samsung’s upcoming smart speaker which will certainly help the company expand the ecosystem for its digital assistant. Samsung is also going to bring Bixby to a variety of consumer electronic devices as well.

As far as the Galaxy Note 9 release is concerned, multiple reports suggest that the upcoming flagship will be out earlier than expected due to Samsung’s accelerated release schedule. If word on the street is believed, Samsung is going to launch the Galaxy Note 9 either by late July or in early August.
