Galaxy Z Fold 2 exposed in live photos by China’s regulatory agency

A portion of the 500,000 Galaxy Z Fold 2 units Samsung could be selling this year will go to China, but before that can happen, the foldable device must meet the requirements of various regulatory agencies. TENAA is one of those regulatory bodies and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 already paid it a visit. The TENAA documents are not yet complete so in-depth specs are missing. The application does contain a couple of details, but more importantly, it’s accompanied by and a handful of Galaxy Z Fold 2 photos which is always a treat given the phone’s gorgeous exterior design.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 that passed through TENAA carries model number SM-F9160; it supports standalone and non-standalone 5G NR connectivity, and it was manufactured in Vietnam. No other technical details were revealed but the smartphone-tablet hybrid was exposed from nearly every angle via the live photos below.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 to be officially introduced to China on September 9

Samsung didn’t reveal too much about the Galaxy Z Fold 2 during Galaxy Unpacked 2020 but the company did confirm that a more in-depth launch event will take place on September 1. Pre-orders will open a day later in some markets and the phone should ship to customers starting September 18. However, in China, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is said to be planned for a separate launch event on September 9, meaning that the phone could potentially go on sale later than September 18.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be available in Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black. The latter color is seen in the live photos above and below. There will also be a third variant called the Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne Edition but availability will be limited. Launch prices for China are currently missing but the standard edition will cost around 2,000 euro in most markets.

The BTS effect: V drums up renewed interest in Galaxy S20… again

It’s been half a year since Samsung announced its collaboration with South Korean boy band sensation BTS, and the company is still riding that wave of K-Pop stardom. The endeavor appears to be a massive success in numerous respects, but longevity is certainly among its most significant accomplishments. Cue the latest example of Kim Tae-hyung – better known as V – drumming up yet another round of renewed interest in the Galaxy S20 on social media. In this instance, a picture of V taking a selfie with the Galaxy S20 yielded enough Weibo inquiries about the smartphone he’s holding that it took a life of its own on Twitter where it’s been making the rounds since yesterday as one more reminder that Samsung should be pretty happy about its BTS partnership.

So, while hardcore tech enthusiasts aren’t necessarily the core demographic that the BTS-themed Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Buds+ are catered toward, we’ve been following the effects of the #SamsungXBTS campaign with great interest because it just seems to be so much more effective at generating social media capital than anything else Samsung attempted in recent memory.

BTS single-handedly made Samsung cool again

While the BTS fandom prides itself on its diversity, one of its major demographics also happens to place high on Samsung’s shortlist of audiences that it simply doesn’t understand. We’ve been regularly getting new studies suggesting the Galaxy brand is getting worse at appealing to young people for a while now. A particularly sore point of many such findings usually revolves around how irrelevant Samsung is among teens nowadays. That demographic is a pretty significant indicator of sustainability seeing how much more likely it is yield new lifelong – or at least long-term – customers. Meaning it’s not one Samsung can just ignore or keep failing to reach indefinitely before its global position becomes threatened.

This would be the main reason why the Seoul-based tech giant keeps throwing money in seemingly random directions tangentially associated with young people such as Fortnite, PUBG, and Blackpink. But it wasn’t until #SamsungXBTS that one such effort simultaneously generated so much virality while still helping Samsung move countless flagships in a matter of days – or a day, in some markets.

It should hence come as no surprise that BTS is already promoting the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Samsung’s highly refined take at the foldable smartphone concept announced this month. Perhaps it’s premature to speculate about a potential Galaxy Z Fold 2 BTS Edition, but if there’s one thing that could deter the global economic collapse that 2020 is so determined to cause, then a spending spree induced by a BTS-themed smartphone in the $2,000 ballpark sounds flamboyant enough that it might just work.

Amazon India confirms Galaxy Tab S7 is coming soon, possibly this week

Samsung is making preparations to release the Galaxy Tab S7 series in India. The tablet is not yet available for pre-order even though it is listed at Samsung’s online shop where prospective buyers can refer to the company’s promotional material to learn more about the product. As to when it might actually go on sale, the tablet’s market release seems to be just around the corner after a landing page for the Galaxy Tab S7 was launched by Amazon India.

The landing page lets customers sign up to receive availability notifications and confirms that the Galaxy Tab S7 will be coming soon at Amazon.in. It makes no mention of the Galaxy Tab S7+ variant; however, Samsung has its own store page for the Galaxy Tab S7+ LTE up and running so there’s no question about whether or not the larger tablet variant will be sold in the country.

It only remains to be seen if the Galaxy Tab S7+, too, will be sold by Amazon, but either way, exact prices and release dates for India remain unknown for the time being. There is also a possibility that the Wi-Fi-only Galaxy Tab S7+ won’t be sold in the country – at least not initially – as this variant has not yet been listed by Samsung or any of its retail partners.

The Galaxy Tab S7 series is scheduled to ship to customers in other countries this Friday, August 21. With Samsung India’s major retail partner now preparing landing pages for the product, it’s likely that the Galaxy Tab S7 duo will go on sale in India around the same date. The Galaxy Tab S7+ is by far the best Android tablet on the market and, as detailed in our review, it has an exceptional display, amazing build quality, and it’s gotten a lot better at productivity thanks to the new S Pen and DeX enhancements. Will you be buying one? If so then which model are you looking forward to making your own? Let us know in the comment section.

Samsung is manufacturing IBM’s first, most powerful 7nm data center chip

Samsung’s semiconductor business arm is scoring another win as the company has signed an agreement to manufacture IBM’s latest processor chip for data centers. IBM unveiled its new POWER10 data center chip earlier today as a successor to the IBM POWER9 solution. POWER10 promises up to three times energy efficiency improvements and it will be IBM’s first chip based on 7nm process technology.

The IBM POWER10 boasts new hardware-enabled security capabilities like transparent memory encryption and introduces a breakthrough technology called Memory Inception which can improve cloud capacity and economics for memory-intensive workloads. The chip’s new architecture provides 10x, 15x, and 20x faster AI for FP32, BFloat16, and INT8 calculations per socket compared to the IBM POWER9.

Industry watchers believe that IBM may want to capitalize on Intel’s delay in the production of 7nm chips and the company is looking to make the POWER10 available as soon as possible, Meanwhile, Samsung has been putting its 7nm process technology to good use not only for IBM but a few other prominent clients. Just earlier this summer, Samsung won a limited order to manufacture some of NVIDIA’s 7nm GPUs. Those orders were shared with TSMC but IBM made no mention of the Taiwanese semiconductor company in regards to POWER10. Samsung is seemingly the sole manufacturer of its high-performance data center chipset.

Samsung India launches Galaxy Watch 3, Galaxy Buds Live with promos

Samsung today officially launched the Galaxy Watch 3 smartwatch, Galaxy Buds Live earbuds, and several early-adopter promotional discounts covering both wearables. Its localized messaging regarding both gadgets is consistent with how the Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Buds Live have been marketed ever since they were formally announced at an online-only Galaxy Unpacked event in early August. More specifically, Samsung isn’t advertising these two wearables as mere devices, but lifestyle choices. Because at the end of the day, you’re looking at a INR 14,990 ($200) pair of earbuds and a smartwatch starting at double that, so you better be certain your lifestyle feels their effects because your wallet surely will.

In all seriousness, the Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Buds Live are pretty much the very best of what money can currently buy in the wearable department and are priced accordingly. Their pricing is also a lot more competitive compared to the regular Galaxy Note 20 which launched alongside them.

Samsung’s 2020 wearables are all about refinement

In accordance with Samsung’s product strategy, there are several launch promotions Indian consumers can currently avail in order to buy either one of these gadgets at a discounted price. If you pre-book the Bluetooth-only variants of the 41mm or 45mm Galaxy Watch 3, you are eligible for an instant cashback amounting to INR 4,500 and INR 5,000, respectively. This incentive will only be offered from August 20th to 26th and is exclusive to preorders made through Samsung.com, Amazon India, and Flipkart. So, not really that exclusive.

A less widely available offer promising twice the value in savings is tied to the LTE-ready Galaxy Watch 3 models in both sizes – pre-book one of those from today until August 26th, and you’ll receive a 66% discount on the Galaxy Buds Live, allowing you to get your hands on these wireless earbuds for just INR 4,990. The Galaxy Buds live are scheduled for release next Tuesday, August 25th, whereas the Galaxy Watch 3 will be hitting the store shelves in India two days later. Both sets of gadgets will be available in Samsung’s latest signature color – Mystic Bronze – apart from the 45mm Galaxy Watch 3 models, which will only be offered in Mystic Black and Mystic Silver. The latter finish will also be available on the 41mm Galaxy Watch 3, on top of the Mystic Bronze default. As for the Galaxy Buds Live, Mystic White and Mystic Black complete their list of casing shades.
