Samsung could launch the Galaxy S11 and new Galaxy Fold on this date

If history is any indication, Samsung is going to unveil the Galaxy S11 in February next year. The Galaxy S10 was also unveiled in February so you get the idea. Next year’s event is likely going to be extra special because of the new Galaxy Fold.

Reports suggest that the clamshell Galaxy Fold we’ve been hearing about will be unveiled alongside the Galaxy S11. A tipster has now hinted when both of these devices may finally be made official.

February 18, 2020 tipped as the launch date for these devices

@UniverseIce claims, based on rumors, that Samsung has tentatively scheduled the launch of the Galaxy S11 and the new Galaxy Fold on February 18, 2020. Both devices would be unveiled at an event in San Francisco, California. Some of you may recall that the Galaxy S10 was launched on February 20, 2019 and the event was also conducted in San Francisco.

Even if the date isn’t accurate, it’s highly likely that we’ll see the Galaxy S11 in the third week of February. Samsung will unveil the device at a separate event before it puts the Galaxy S11 on display at the Mobile World Congress 2020 in Barcelona. MWC kicks off on February 24, 2020. The new Galaxy Buds+ with active noise cancellation are also expected to debut with the new phones at the February event.

Going by everything we know about the Galaxy S11 so far, it’s going to be a camera powerhouse, and that’s something we have long advocated for. The clamshell Galaxy Fold has a lot more interest. It will be the first foldable smartphone in this form factor to hit the market. Reports suggest that it may also cost less than $900 which would do wonders for the Galaxy Fold series as the cost of entry would be lowered considerably.

Whatever the case may be, February is shaping up to be an exciting month for Samsung fans.

Samsung’s wearable devices post impressive 156.4% growth in Q3 2019

Demand for wearable devices continues to rise and Samsung certainly has its eyes on the prize. The company has released several new wearable products over the past year to increase its market share. The strategy appears to be working.

The latest data from market research firm IDC reveals that Samsung’s shipments of wearable devices in the quarter ending September 2019 has grown by an impressive 156.4 percent compared to the same period last year.

Samsung takes third position in the wearables market

The wearable market posted strong year-over-year growth of 94.6 percent with 84.5 million units being shipped in the third quarter of this year. That was also a new record for shipments in a single quarter. However, the bulk of this growth was led by “hearables” or wireless headphones. That was to be expected as more and more smartphone vendors are removing the headphone jack from their devices.

Apple and Xiaomi occupy the first two spots with shipments of 29.5 million and 12.4 million units respectively. The former saw increased demand for its smartwatch and wireless earbuds while Xiaomi’s competitively priced Mi Band activity trackers did well in markets across Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Samsung takes the third position with a 9.8 percent share in the wearable market this past quarter. It shipped 8.3 million units, an impressive 156.4 percent increase compared to the 3.2 million units shipped in Q3 2018.

That number will likely increase as the company introduces new wearable products. There may very well be a new smartwatch on the horizon. Samsung also has the new Galaxy Buds+ in the pipeline with new features such as active noise cancellation.

Samsung TV Plus scores a distribution deal with Vevo

Samsung TV Plus, the Korean tech giant’s linear video streaming service for its smart TVs, is getting more content, thanks to a new distribution deal with Vevo, the world’s leading premium music video provider. The deal will bring five genre-curated linear channels – Vevo Pop, Vevo Hip-Hop, Vevo Country, Vevo Latino, and Vevo R&B – to Samsung TV Plus.

Vevo Pop on channel 1517 is the first among the five channels to go live, with the others coming at a later date. Like the other content on Samsung TV Plus, these are free ad-supported channels. Vevo already has distribution deals with YouTube, Pluto TV, and other streaming services, so some or all of this content is already available to Samsung Smart TV customers via third-party apps.

“As a global leader in TV, Samsung is an ideal partner for us to enhance our offering; with their scale and reach the Samsung TV Plus service represents enormous opportunities for our clients and partners,” said Kevin McGurn, President of Sales and Distribution at Vevo.

Samsung, Merriam-Webster, and Britannica create IoT app for Family Hub

Samsung has partnered with Encyclopaedia Britannica and Merriam-Webster to create a new IoT app for Family Hub refrigerators. The app pushes content such as Britannica’s On This Day and Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Day on Family Hub refrigerators, providing interesting daily facts and trivia to households.

Samsung Family Hub refrigerators offer food for thought

Encyclopaedia Britannica’s On This Day brings daily details – or time capsules – to users on interesting events that occurred on that day in history. It also informs knowledge seekers on historical figures who were born on that day and provides biographies.

Similarly, Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Day aims to expand your vocabulary by, you guessed it, showcasing a new word every day along with a definition and examples of how these words can be used in a sentence. You can click this link for a quick video preview on how the IoT app works on Family Hub refrigerators, or take a look at the screenshots below.

Word of the Day and On This Day are not exclusive to Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerators, of course, and they can be accessed on the web on pretty much any modern device featuring a web browser. Nevertheless, the bitesize format of the IoT app makes it a perfect fit for the Family Hub lineup. Household members will be able to acquire more knowledge with ease whenever they check their fridge, and the app should inspire family members to engage in interesting conversations.

Galaxy A30 with Android 10 receives Wi-Fi certification

Galaxy A30 has received Wi-Fi certification with Android 10 onboard yesterday, confirming the imminent release of the OS update. As per the One UI 2.0 rollout schedule published by Samsung, the midrange device is set to receive the latest version of Android with One UI 2.0 in January next year. If the company sticks to the schedule, the Galaxy A30 will be the first A-series device to receive the Android 10 update.

Galaxy M30, the A30’s offline counterpart, will also get the Android 10 update in January. There is, however, one significant difference between the two releases. Going by Samsung’s two OS version updates per device policy, this will be the last Android version upgrade for the Galaxy M30, while the A30 may receive Android 11 down the line. This is because the former launched with Android 8.1 onboard and already received an OS version update to Android Pie. The Galaxy A30, on the other hand, debuted with Android Pie onboard, making the upcoming release its first version upgrade.

Both Android 10 and Samsung’s One UI 2.0 are minor releases compared to their predecessors. You can read our One UI 2.0 Feature Focus series to know about all the new features and improvements included in this release. So far, the Korean company has released the update only for its flagship devices. We have to wait and see which of these new features will come to the budget and mid-range devices.

Samsung Display to win big in 5G era next year as OLED demand surges

A couple of weeks ago, Samsung Display climbed up the ranks to become the industry’s largest display supplier once again, and now the company expects its business to ramp up even more in 2020, as demand for OLED panels is likely to surge in the 5G era.

5G will become available in more markets next year, and numerous OEMs will try to capitalize on this by releasing a larger number of 5G-enabled phones. This is a big opportunity for Samsung Display, as OLED panels are the perfect fit for 5G smartphones thanks to their thinner profile. Compared to LCD panels, OLEDs allow OEMs to equip their devices with more generous batteries, larger screens, and additional sensors.

5G to fuel the OLED market, and Samsung Display will reap the benefits

In Samsung Display’s own words cited by The Korea Times, ‘an increasing number of phone makers are expected to adopt more OLED displays for their 5G smartphones’ next year.

Likewise, according to the Korean publication citing industry research firm IDC, the 5G smartphone market is expected to increase by a whopping 17 times next year. 11 million 5G smartphones are said to have been shipped in 2019, but IDC expects the figure to increase to about 190 million next year.

On top of that, IDC forecasts an annual growth rate of 164% for the 5G market, with 540 million 5G handsets likely to be commercialized in 2023. Samsung Display is, by far, the biggest OLED manufacturer in the world with an 86% market share as of Q1 2019, which means that its OLED business could grow at a similarly fast pace over the next few years.

Samsung’s foundry business projected to post 19% growth in Q4 2019

Samsung’s foundry business is an important part of the Korean conglomerate’s empire. It has been actively seeking to bring new clients on board in order to increase profits from this business. Samsung does appear to be having some luck in doing so.

Its foundry business is projected to grow 19 percent year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2019. That’s a commendable increase even as Samsung continues to trail the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company in this market.

Samsung still trails TSMC in the foundry market

Market research firm TrendForce has put together a report which projects that Samsung’s foundry business will make $3.4 billion in revenue for the quarter ending December 2019. If the projection is accurate, it would represent a 19.3 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Much of the boost in revenue is attributed to Samsung’s 5G networking chips and its image sensors. Samsung’s high-end 4G mobile processors are expected to see less demand in this period as the market shifts to 5G. However, Samsung would make up for the lost business by manufacturing the 5G-capable Snapdragon 865 for Qualcomm. Samsung is also reportedly making 14nm PC CPUs for Intel.

Despite its recent wins in the foundry segment, Samsung still has a ways to go before it can truly challenge TSMC’s hold over the foundry market. The Taiwanese manufacturer is expected to account for 52.7 percent of the foundry market in Q4 2019 compared to Samsung’s 17.8 percent.

Samsung is betting on its foundry business to drive more growth in the future. It said earlier this year that more than $100 billion will be invested in the business by 2030 to expand production of non-memory chips which have for long been Samsung’s primary drivers of record profits.

‘Regular’ Galaxy S11’s battery capacity confirmed, and it’s pretty big

After we saw the batteries of the Galaxy S11e and the Galaxy S11+ pop up in certification imagery, the regular model’s power cell has been pictured as well. The battery has a typical capacity of 4,500 mAh.

Regular Galaxy S11’s battery capacity higher than Galaxy Note 10+

The first hint that Samsung might bring significant battery upgrades to the Galaxy S11 line up emerged about a month ago when the base model was revealed to have quite a beefy 3,800 to 3,900 mAh capacity. And just last week, the Galaxy S11+ was confirmed to pack a whopping 5,000 mAh battery.

Now, the capacity of the remaining model in the series, the regular Galaxy S11, can be pinned down as well, thanks to the certification found in the SafetyKorea database. As it turns out, earlier rumors about a 4,300 mAH power cell were too pessimistic, as the actual battery (EB-BG985ABY) has a typical capacity of 4,500 mAh.

regular samsung galaxy s11 battery eb-bg985aby

The image of the battery itself is of the blurry type, but we can just about make out the typical capacity of 17.37 Wh, which at Samsung’s current 3.86 V works out to exactly 4,500 mAh. The rated capacity will sit somewhere between 4,300 and 4,400 mAh. The battery itself is manufactured by ITM Semiconductor in Vietnam, though a variant produced by Samsung SDI might surface at a later point.

Now, we can finally list the battery capacities of the entire Galaxy S11 lineup:

  • Galaxy S11e: 3,800-3,900 mAh (EB-BG980ABY)
  • Galaxy S11: 4,500 mAh (EB-BG985ABY)
  • Galaxy S11+: 5,000 mAh (EB-BG988ABY)

So far, no separate batteries for the 5G models have been spotted, except of course for the Galaxy S11+ which will only be available with 5G connectivity based on what we’ve seen so far. We, therefore, expect the battery detailed today to power both the 4G and 5G variants of the regular Galaxy S11.

Samsung Galaxy S10 5G finally gets stable Android 10 update

Two weeks after the Galaxy S10 series started receiving the stable Android 10 update in various markets, the Galaxy S10 5G is joining the party and making the jump to One UI 2.0. Those who participated in the Android 10 beta program in South Korea can now download the stable Android 10 update on their Galaxy S10 5G.

It’s unclear if the update has also been released for those who didn’t participate in the beta program. Those who were using Android Pie on their LTE Galaxy S10 models started receiving the update the same day that it rolled out to beta users, and that will hopefully be the case for Galaxy S10 5G owners as well. As for when the Galaxy S10 5G will get Android 10 in other markets, we will just have to wait and see.

Those in South Korea using the Android 10 beta can download the stable update from the Settings » Software update menu on their phone. The software version for the stable update is G977NKSU2BSL2 and it includes the December 2019 security patch. Do let us know if you have received the update on your non-beta Galaxy S10 5G in Korea or another country by leaving a comment.

Thanks for the tip, @jrwut!
