Samsung preparing a Galaxy S8 Oreo beta test program

Development on Android 8.0 Oreo for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ has already started, and it looks like we may see the company launch a beta program for the Oreo update soon. We’ve come across newer Oreo firmware versions for both devices: G950FXXE1ZQI7 and G955FXXU1ZQI7. See the letter ‘Z’ in the firmware version? Well, Samsung uses the letter Z for test firmware, and it was also seen on the beta Nougat releases for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge last year.

That’s all the info we have right now, so there’s no telling exactly when the first Galaxy S8 Oreo beta update will hit and what markets it will be made available in. With Oreo, Google has made the necessary changes in the form of Project Treble to help manufacturers release major software updates quicker than was possible before. But, Samsung’s Android skin is among the heaviest out there in terms of features and overall customization, so it remains to be seen if Project Treble will truly be useful as far as Oreo for Samsung devices is concerned. However, given Samsung is now concurrently releasing software updates for its 2017 flagships across many countries, we should see the same happen with Oreo.

Naturally, the Galaxy Note 8 will also be receiving the Oreo update, although the Galaxy S8 is no doubt going to be first in line. We’ll let you know once the Oreo beta program for the Galaxy S8 begins; if you haven’t already, don’t forget to check out regularly updated list of Samsung devices that should be getting an update to Android 8.0 Oreo.

How to move apps to the SD card on Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8

Samsung has long enabled users to move apps to external storage. We published a detailed guide on how to move apps to the SD card on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. That guide was required because the procedure was changed slightly for devices on Marshmallow.

We know many of you will be wondering how you can move apps to SD card on Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8. It’s possible to do that on both flagships but again, the procedure is slightly different for these Nougat-powered handsets. This procedure holds true for 2017 devices like the current Galaxy A and Galaxy J series handsets as well.

The guide below will teach you how to move apps to SD card on Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8. Do keep in mind that individual apps have to support moving to external storage. Apps that don’t enable the option can’t be moved to the microSD card.

How to move apps to SD card on Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8

move apps to SD card on Galaxy S8

Step 1: Press and hold an app icon. Tap on App info when the menu pops up.

Step 2: Tap on Storage to bring up the detailed information.

Step 3: Tap on Change in order to move the app.

Step 4: Select SD card as the new storage location.

Step 5: Wait as the app and its data is exported to the external storage. It can take a few moments. The app can’t be used while it’s being exported.

The App info menu can also be accessed via the Settings app but this method is faster. That’s it. That’s all you need to do in order to move apps to SD card on Galaxy S8.

Bear in mind that some of the exported app’s data will continue to take up space on the internal storage. It’s an Android thing, can’t be helped. Exported apps might stop working if the SD card is taken out.

Don’t forget to move the apps back to the internal storage if you’re swapping SD cards. Repeat the steps mentioned above to export them back once you’ve swapped the cards.

If you get stuck at any point don’t hesitate to ask for assistance in the comments section below. Check out all of the other Tips & Tricks we’ve posted to get the most out of your Samsung smartphone.

You will soon be able to buy the Pink Galaxy S8 in Europe

Customers didn’t have the option to buy the Pink Galaxy S8 in Europe but that’s going to change soon. A retailer in the Netherlands has confirmed that the Pink Galaxy S8 is going to be released in Europe officially. The handset will be sold in this color option across Europe in the near future.

Samsung launched the Pink variant of the Galaxy S8+ in Taiwan initially back in June. The company confirmed last month that it will launch the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ with this color option in Mexico as well.

It’s the same Galaxy S8 that we all know and love. Nothing else is different about this variant with the paint job being the obvious exception.

A listing for this particular variant of the Galaxy S8 was spotted earlier today at the Dutch online retailer Belsimpel. The retailer doesn’t have a listing for the Galaxy S8+ so it’s unclear if it will be making its way to Europe.

Belsimpel has since confirmed that this is the Dutch model and not one that has been imported. It will be released in the Netherlands and across Europe soon. The retailer is allowing users to reserve a unit now though it hasn’t confirmed when shipments will begin.

Samsung reportedly struggling to increase the sales of Quantum Dot TVs

Samsung is the largest TV maker in the world, and it has been able to hold its position for 12 years in a row. It unveiled newer generation high-end QLED TVs earlier this year, but the sales have been slower than expected. The South Korean TV giant is now reportedly trying to find a solution to increase the sales of its QLED TVs. According to research firm IHS, the market share of QLED TVs stood at a meagre 1.5 percent in the first quarter and just 0.8 percent in the second quarter of 2017.

Cadmium, which is a toxic heavy metal used to make QLED panels, is restricted by European and other environmental laws. However, the QLED panels made by Samsung are Cadmium-free but expensive to manufacture. This is the reason why most brands haven’t jumped onto the QLED bandwagon yet. According to a report from Business Korea, Samsung is thinking about opening up its cadmium-free QLED technology to other brands to increase the adoption among consumers. However, no final decision has been made yet.

An official from Samsung Electronics said, “Only a few companies can produce cadmium-free quantum dot displays, so the Quantum Dot TV market is not growing. Samsung is in a dilemma in opening its self-developed technology because the technical gap with TV producers that got into the business late can be easily narrowed while the company cannot create any profits.” Currently, HiSense, Samsung, TCL, and Vestel are using the Quantum Dot technology for TVs, while Changhong, Grundig, Konka, LG, Loewe, Panasonic, Philips, Sony, and Skyworth are using OLED panels.

Usually, when Samsung adopts a new technology, other brands follow, but that hasn’t happened yet with QLED. So, the company is trying to popularize the QLED brand and is hoping to take the leadership in the segment. According to a lot of experts, Samsung’s QLED TVs don’t use the actual Quantum Dot technology, and LG’s OLED TVs are far superior to Samsung’s QLED TVs in terms of picture quality.

Galaxy Note 8 is reportedly getting negative coverage by mass media in China

Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 8 in China earlier this month. It teamed up with WeChat Pay for the Galaxy Note 8 in the country. The South Korean company is now trying hard to win back the trust of consumers in the country after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco. However, its job has become even tougher due to the negative coverage of the new phablet by Chinese mass media.

According to a report by Business Korea, Chinese mass media has been publishing negative articles about the Galaxy Note 8 every day, trying to make a diversion. Media companies are comparing the pre-order numbers of the Galaxy Note 8 with the iPhone 8. Samsung latest phablet received over 20,000 pre-orders while the iPhone 8 received over four million pre-orders. However, it should be noted that customers have pay CNY 100 (about $15) for pre-booking a Galaxy Note 8, while there is no need to pay any money to pre-order an iPhone 8.

A deposit system for pre-booking a Galaxy Note 8 means that they’re more likely to result in an actual purchase. A Samsung Electronics official said, “We have introduced the deposit system for preorder in China to increase the likelihood of an actual purchase. Preorders of the Galaxy Note 8 are higher than the previous model.” The extremely high pricing of the Galaxy Note at CNY 6,988 (about $1,061) is also a factor for low pre-orders of the Galaxy Note 8. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, with a bezel-less screen and a Snapdragon 835 processor, is priced at just CNY 3,299 (about $501).

One more factor that’s hurting Samsung in China is the anti-South Korean sentiment that has developed since the deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD). Chinese consumers and media have been knocking off South Korean brands, including Hyundai, LG, and Samsung, and they’re avoiding purchasing products from those brands. According to the latest numbers from research firm Counterpoint Research, Samsung has a market share of just 3 percent in China’s smartphone segment, while Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi collectively have a market share of 87 percent.

A China’s state-run weekly magazine reported, “The THAAD issue is one of the big factors that the Galaxy Note 8 is having a hard time in China. The anti-South Korean sentiment made Chinese consumers don’t shop at Lotte Mart nor buy Samsung, LG and Hyundai products.” A Chinese IT news outlet said, “The iPhone 8 received more than 4 million preorders, but the Samsung Note 8 received only thousands of preorders.

Samsung joins Semiconductor Research Corporation’s consortium

The Semiconductor Research Corporation has announced that it has got Samsung onboard. The Korean tech giant has agreed to join the SRC’s research consortium. It’s a big deal for the SRC given that Samsung is one of the largest chipmakers in the world.

Now that Samsung is onboard, the SRC counts seven of the top ten global semiconductor companies as its members. Samsung is the fifth non-US headquartered company to join the SRC in less than two years.

Samsung will be participating in two SRC platforms. It will work with the SRC on the New Science Team project and the Global Research Collaboration program.

The New Science Team project will commence in January 2018. This 5-year, $300 million+ project has two complementary research programs. The programs are called Joint University Microelectronics Program or JUMP and nanoelectronics Computing Research or nCORE.

The program’s purpose is supporting long-term research focused on high-performance, energy-efficient microelectronics for computing, communications and storage solutions.

The Global Research Collaboration program comprises of nine design and process technology research disciplines. Samsung is going to participate in the Packaging and Logic & Memory Devices programs.

“Collaborative research has been a key element of Samsung’s global strategy,” said Dr. HK Kang, Executive Vice President of Semiconductor Research and Development Center at Samsung Electronics.

“We look forward to working with the SRC team to spark meaningful advancements in semiconductor technology as we explore future innovation,” he added.

Galaxy S8 price in South Korea almost double that of the US

A local consumer group is not happy with the Galaxy S8 price in South Korea. It has released a new report today. The report points out that in some cases the price is actually double that of the United States. It mentions that the price of an unlocked Galaxy S8 in Samsung’s home country is far above that of the US.

The Green Consumer Network’s report says that the Galaxy S8 price in South Korea is 1.02 million won or $908 for the unlocked model. It claims that this is higher than the $780 price tag for US customers. The US price also includes tax.

The unlocked Galaxy S8 can be purchased from Samsung’s website in the US for $724.99. The Galaxy S8 costs $824.99. That’s before tax. Customers also get a free Gear VR with Controller with every purchase.

That’s not all. US customers can also get discounts of up to $300 for trading in their existing smartphones. If you take that into account, the Galaxy S8 price in South Korea ends up being almost double compared to the US.

Samsung also provides incentives like the free Gear VR headsets to customers in the US. The Green Consumer Network says these incentives are not provided to customers in South Korea.

It calls on the company to sell unlocked smartphones to the public at the same price they’re supplied to mobile carriers. Whether or not this will ever happen is another matter entirely.

Samsung invests €25 million in Cynora with LG for more efficient OLED displays

Samsung has invested €25 million in Germany-based Cynora with LG for the advancement of more efficient OLED display technology. The investments have been made by Samsung Ventures and LG Display.

Cynora is a leading provider of highly efficient organic emitter materials for OLEDs. It’s developing a new type of organic emitting materials for OLED displays based on TADF or Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence technology.

This technology will enable Cynora to commercialize the first high-efficiency blue emitting material on the market, it’s the most sought-after material by OLED display markets like Samsung. The high-performance blue materials will allow higher display resolution with a significant reduction in power consumption.

“This investment confirms that our materials are highly attractive for the OLED display industry,” said Cynora CEO Gildas Sorin, adding that the company is going to work closely with Samsung and LG to support their respective activities. The cash that it has raised will also be used to improve its worldwide presence as a supplier of high-efficiency emitting materials.

The OLED panel market is expected to reach $75 billion in sales by 2021. Increased efficiency will be key to securing future growth of this display technology. Cynora is aiming to commercialize its first blue product by the end of this year, followed by green and red.
