New Samsung AI center to be opened in Montreal

A new Samsung AI center is reportedly going to be opened in Montreal. It will be the 7th such facility that the company will open recently. Samsung is heavily investing in artificial intelligence as it categorizes it as a future growth avenue. The company most recently opened an AI center in New York City. It has six other centers located in key cities across the globe.

Samsung already has AI centers up and running in Toronto, Silicon Valley, Moscow and Seoul. It also has a location in the United Kingdom. The one in Montreal will be the company’s 7th AI center and its 2nd in Canada.

New Samsung AI center will be Canada’s second

According to a report out of South Korea, the Montreal artificial intelligence center is being opened in line with the company’s efforts to bolster its AI capabilities. It will employ researchers who will study AI technologies extensively. The research will then help the company bring innovative AI-based features to its smartphones and other products.

Professor Maja Pantic, who is the research director at the Samsung AI Center Cambridge, has previously said that the company’s vision for artificial intelligence is to ensure that its devices continue to learn. The idea is to have AI always there for users without needing their intervention.

Samsung hasn’t made a formal announcement as yet regarding its Montreal AI center. It is unclear right now precisely when this center will be up and running. Samsung has a stated goal of hiring almost 1,000 AI specialists by 2020 so we can expect to see additional AI centers being opened in the coming months.

Google’s Pixel 3 XL uses OLED displays from Samsung

Samsung has a near monopoly in the mobile OLED business. It dominates the market not only because of the sheer volume it can produce but also the quality of its panels. Samsung’s OLED panels have consistently proven to be better than alternatives and Google seems to agree as well.

The company previously sourced OLED panels from LG for its Pixel smartphones. Not anymore. A teardown of the Pixel 3 XL has revealed that the OLED display comes from Samsung.

Samsung now supplying displays to Google

It’s not uncommon for Samsung to supply displays for devices that will eventually compete with its handsets as well. The company did that for Apple’s first OLED iPhone as well. The display affiliate is a separate business entity and thus sells even to the company’s competitors.

iFixit tore down the Pixel 3 XL and confirms that the 6.3-inch OLED display is made by Samsung. That also explains the gains in color gamut and accuracy shown by display tests conducted on the new handset so far.

Google may not have received the intended results from LG’s panels or perhaps Samsung may have offered it a better price. That is not known. What’s confirmed is that Samsung is indeed the display supplier for Google’s new flagship.

Google has also manufactured the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL in a different manner compared to the predecessors. The devices have been developed in-house entirely and are being produced in Foxconn’s factories.

Samsung obviously stands to gain if the Pixel 3 XL ends up doing well in the market. Google would have to ramp up production if there’s great demand and it would thus order more panels from Samsung. The Korean giant would make money on each of those panels.

Samsung Internet 8.0 goes stable, offers faster downloads, improved privacy and more

More than a month since it was released in beta form, version 8.0 of Samsung Internet has now gone stable and is available for everyone to download. Beta testers have been reaping its benefits for some time now, and if you have been sticking to the regular Samsung Internet app, those benefits will be available to you as well with the latest update on Google Play.

Samsung Internet 8.0: Faster downloads, enhanced privacy

Samsung Internet 8.0 brings faster download speeds, achieved by using multiple parallel connections. That’s similar to how download accelerators work on Windows and other desktop OS. Privacy has been improved as well, with a new Do not track option available so you can prevent websites from tracking your browsing habits. Also new is the ability to sync your favorite sites across different Samsung devices using Samsung’s Smart Switch app. Version 8.0 also gets a new Chromium engine under the hood.

If you have Samsung Internet installed on your Galaxy or other Android smartphone, the update to version 8.0 should be available to you from Google Play. The updated version can also be downloaded in APK form from our database and installed manually on your device.

Here’s why Project Treble might not help Samsung much with Android Pie

There’s no other way to say it: Samsung is likely going to take as long with Android Pie as it did with Oreo or Nougat. It’s been revealed that Samsung is preparing an Android Pie beta program for the Galaxy S9, so there are going to be the usual beta tests before Samsung releases the final update. And, well, the benefits Project Treble brings to Android updates probably aren’t going to help the company much.

To understand why, we have to look at what Project Treble is. Before Project Treble came around (before Oreo, that is), the operating system framework and the low-level software drivers needed to make a phone’s hardware work with the OS were part of the same code. That meant that any changes to the framework, which is the user interface you see and use on your phone, also needed updated low-level drivers (which allow the hardware to work with the software) before a software update could be delivered to the consumer.

So, for example, on the Galaxy S8, Qualcomm would need to update its low-level code for the Snapdragon 835 so that it works with Pie on the device. Samsung would then add all of its own tweaks to the UI and make other necessary changes and then roll out the update. With Project Treble, that low-level code has been separated from the OS framework. So now, Qualcomm doesn’t need to offer updated drivers to Samsung before Samsung can implement the user interface changes. And if the existing code for the Snapdragon chip works with a newer version of Android, Samsung only needs to update its user interface to release the final update.

Samsung’s interface changes too many for Android Pie to arrive too fast

Project Treble has more to it, and our explanation might not be totally correct, but you should have gotten a good idea of what it generally means for Android updates. And you probably know why it won’t help, either. Samsung heavily modifies the Android framework, by both changing the user interface visually and by adding tons of new features on top. So every time there’s a new version of Android, the company has to make its user interface work properly on the new vanilla Android framework that Google provides. And that procedure, unfortunately, can take time.

Android Pie Android Pie Android Pie Android Pie

It takes additional time every time Samsung makes major changes to its own UI. With Android Pie, that’s exactly what the Korean giant is doing. There’s a new Night theme interface that Samsung is implementing into the user interface, and it looks to be in an alpha stage based on the Android Pie firmware that have leaked for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9. Adapting its custom user interface and features to the Android framework in general takes plenty of time when it’s the level of customization you see on Samsung phones. Add the Night theme to the mix, and you can see why Samsung will need time to make sure everything works properly.

And that’s not counting all the testing carriers have to do before an update can be released. So, ultimately, we don’t think Project Treble is going to make our wait for Pie any shorter. Well, it could mean the update comes out early by a month or so since Samsung will have the low-level code ready before the framework upgradation has completed. But, overall, there’s little reason to believe Treble will offer major benefits to Samsung, at least with Android Pie. Maybe with Android Q things will be faster if Samsung doesn’t make major UI changes. Nothing is guaranteed, though, and it would be best to not get our hopes up.

Second Galaxy Watch update improves music play and battery charging

The first software update for the Galaxy Watch was released more than a month ago, shortly after Samsung’s newest smartwatch went on sale. Samsung is now pushing the second Galaxy Watch update over the air. The new update brings improvements to the overall usability and user experience on the watch and for playing music, although the changelog doesn’t go into detail about exactly what these improvements are.

The new Galaxy Watch software update also enhances reliability of battery charging. That’s something Samsung has been mentioning in update changelogs for most of its smartwatches in recent months, but with no major heating or battery issues reported for the Galaxy Watch yet, battery charging has probably just been improved in general. The Galaxy Watch – especially the 46 mm variant – has great battery life out of the box and will hopefully continue to work that way in the long run.

Second Galaxy Watch update updates Tizen to 4.0.0.1

The latest update for the Galaxy Watch also bumps up the OS version to Tizen 4.0.0.1 and comes with build number R800XXU1BRJ4 and R810XXU1BRJ4 for the 42 mm and 46 mm Galaxy Watch respectively. The update is currently available in the US and should be making its way to other regions soon. You can download the update via the Galaxy Wearable app on your paired smartphone.

Galaxy J7 (2016) and Galaxy J7 Prime receive October patch in India

Samsung is slowly but surely rolling out the October patch for supported devices. The Galaxy J7 (2016) and Galaxy J7 Prime are the two handsets that have received the update today. Samsung has rolled out the firmware update in India so far. The rollout started with the Galaxy Note 9 earlier this month and has since been expanded to mid-range devices.

October patch for Galaxy J7 (2016) and Galaxy J7 Prime

Firmware version J710FNDDU1BRJ1 brings the October patch for the Galaxy J7 (2017) in India. It’s rolling out now and is also available for download from our firmware section. The Galaxy J7 Prime has received firmware version G610FDDU1CRJ4. It’s also available for download from our database.

Samsung has already released the update for the Galaxy J5 Prime. That device got it alongside the Galaxy A6+, Galaxy J4 and the Galaxy J7 Duo. Today’s updates have only been released in India so far. These devices are available in other markets as well so it’s only a matter of time before Samsung makes the update available there as well.

There are fixes for dozens of Android OS vulnerabilities included in the October patch. It also brings fixes for a few vulnerabilities that were discovered in Samsung’s software. Samsung is doing a good job of keeping up the pace for these updates so far. One can hope that it will continue to do so going forward.
