Samsung’s retreat from Huizhou has had a huge negative impact on the city

The closing of Samsung’s last smartphone factory in Huizhou, Guangdong province, China, has left a pretty big mark on the city. According to a couple of recent reports by Mint and South China Morning Post, Huizhou city has become a ghost town after Samsung pulled the plug on its last smartphone factory in China a couple of months ago.

At least 60% of local businesses already closed up shop, and Liu Kaiming, head of the Institute of Contemporary Observation, expects ‘at least 100 factories’ and countless other small shops and restaurants to close down soon.

Samsung’s Huizhou plant create an entire ecosystem around it, and it’s dying fast

Samsung’s Huizhou plant has been operating since 1992 before smartphones were even invented. It began life manufacturing a variety of consumer electronics, ranging from MP3 players to stereos.

The city’s economy boomed along with Samsung’s business. Residential buildings were leased to Samsung workers, and numerous small businesses such as restaurants have relied entirely on Samsung’s workforce to remain profitable. Smaller factories were also built by Chinese companies to support Samsung’s supply chain.

Samsung decided to shut down its Huizhou plant at the beginning of October, and by the end of the month, the city’s exports had dropped by 27% year-on-year. Sadly, those smaller businesses that relied entirely on the economy built around Samsung’s plant have become obsolete, and the city was left in disarray.

Surrounding cities also seem to be affected

The ripple effect caused by Samsung’s departure appears to have extended beyond Huizhou’s borders, however, and reports indicate that the town of Changan in Dongguan city located roughly 100km west of Huizhou is also facing some difficulties. The town is home to a factory previously owned by Janus Intelligent Group, which relied heavily on orders from Samsung. After the company retreated from Huizhou, business has slowed down to the point where thousands of workers and executives have had their hours reduced.

The South Korean chaebol decided to shut down its Huizhou plant due to lower profitability, in part caused by Chinese OEMs and their aggressive push in the market, and partly because of the ongoing trade war between China and the US. The company has relocated its resources to its factories in Vietnam and India.

Galaxy Tab S6 gets firmware update including December security patch

Samsung is rolling out a new firmware update including the December 2019 security patch for the Galaxy Tab S6. The update is available only in Germany at the time of this writing, and it’s hitting both the Wi-Fi-only (SM-T860) as well as the LTE-enabled (SM-T865) variants.

The firmware carries build number T860XXU1ASL3 and T865XXU2ASL3; it weighs around 400MB, and it should include other features and/or improvements aside from the December 2019 security patch. We are unable to verify exactly what changes were introduced through this update, but you can read all about the December 2019 security patch in our monthly report.

It fixes a wide variety of vulnerabilities in Android OS as well as Samsung’s own custom software. One of the more severe vulnerabilities affecting Android OS could technically allow remote attackers to run code on the affected device.

It shouldn’t take long before the new firmware version hits other markets, but Galaxy Tab S6 owners residing in Germany should be able to download the update by opening Settings and accessing the Software update section. They can also skip this process and download the firmware for SM-T860 and SM-T865 from our archive (hit the links for your respective tablet variant) and apply it on your device using a Windows PC.

Ellen gifts her audience with free Galaxy Watch Active 2 smartwatches

Samsung Electronics and Ellen DeGeneres, host of The Ellen Show in the United States, have crossed paths again. The annual Ellen’s 12 Days of Giveaways is underway, celebrating the holiday season by giving away various freebies. The 9th day of the campaign was yesterday. It was a special one, particularly for Samsung fans and gadget enthusiasts in the crowd, as Ellen and Octavia Spencer gave away a Galaxy Watch Active 2 for free to every member of the audience.

Not the first time when Ellen and Samsung cross paths

Some of you might recall that Ellen and Samsung have worked together before. Back in 2014, the Internet – and Twitter in particular – was on fire after Ellen took a group selfie at the Oscars using the Galaxy Note 3. It became the most retweeted posts in history (now sitting at 3.2 million retweets) and to celebrate the milestone, Samsung decided to give away free Galaxy Note 3 units to everyone in Ellen’s audience.

Fast forward to yesterday, and Ellen’s crowd has been equipped with a brand new Galaxy Watch Active 2 for free. Not because of a tweet, but thanks to Ellen’s 12 Days of Giveaways and Samsung’s marketing.

Readers who have read our review should be aware of how we feel about the Galaxy Watch Active 2 by now. It’s a great wearable, and it is Samsung’s best smartwatch to date, albeit some users might miss the physical rotating bezel. Either way, it’s a great fit for a holiday gift, and members of Ellen’s audience who got one for free are sure to get some enjoyment out of it.

Samsung Experience Store comes to Palo Alto

Samsung has opened a new Samsung Experience Store in Palo Alto yesterday, the company revealed in a blog post. Located at the Stanford Shopping Center, this is the fourth such store in the US, after Houston, New York, and Los Angeles. These stores offer Samsung customers a place to discover and experience new products and technologies, get after-sales support, etc.

The Palo Alto store features a modular design that allows the company to rearrange the layout for an entirely different look from time to time. The flexible design enables Samsung to reposition the displays easily to fit the needs arising from a new product launch or a consumer trend.

The décor of the store pays homage to Silicon Valley’s heritage with lighted rods of ones and zeroes. It also features tunable lighting that can be adjusted for different seasons to enhance the customer experience. The company says it has taken great care to provide a warm and welcoming environment for its customers.

Like at the other Samsung Experience Stores, there will be a Samsung Care team to answer any product-related questions and take care of after-sales service requests. The company is also equipping the Palo Alto store with a dedicated 5G education area and a business solutions center for SMBs for targeted assistance.

Samsung Group makes $6.83 million investment in semiconductor startup

Samsung has reportedly made an 8 billion won ($6.83 million) investment in Korean semiconductor startup IVworks, as part of its efforts to support local small and medium-sized semiconductor companies together with the Korean government.

Business Korea reports that IVworks is a producer of core materials needed for semiconductor manufacturing. It managed to produce 8-inch gallium nitride-silicon and 4-inch gallium nitride-silicon carbide epiwafers, becoming the first company to do so in South Korea.

Samsung’s own semiconductor business could benefit from this

Samsung Group’s investment arm will likely benefit from this investment in the long run, as it does with many other startups that have received funding from it. However, the company’s own semiconductor arm could also benefit from having a local supplier of core materials nearby. Trade restrictions have caused issues for the company’s supply lines before, with the more recent hit affecting its display division, and Samsung always aimed for self-sustainability. Therefore, more local suppliers should technically benefit the company.

Samsung owns the most prolific semiconductor business in the world, and although its top spot might be under threat from Intel, the company has plans for massive investments over the next decade to remain the industry’s top dog. But fostering startup companies through Venture Investment, Next Fund, and Catalyst Fund is something that Samsung Group has been doing for a while, and it usually leads to innovation and advancements in technologies.

Nope, Samsung hasn’t sold 1 million Galaxy Fold units yet

Earlier today, we published a report on Samsung selling 1 million Galaxy Fold units, according to Samsung Electronics’ President Young Sohn, who revealed the impressive figure at TechCrunch Disrupt Berlin by saying ‘There’s a million people that want to use this product at $2,000. As it turns out, the claim was not accurate.

According to a fresh update to the report by Yonhap News Agency citing a Samsung spokesperson, the Galaxy Fold has yet to top 1 million sales. The official added that Young Sohn may have erroneously made this claim as he may have confused Samsung’s much earlier target to sell 1 million Galaxy Fold units by the end of the year with the actual sales numbers.

We still don’t know exactly how many Galaxy Fold units were sold

No other details were given aside from the confirmation that the Galaxy Fold hasn’t yet reached 1 million sales. Sadly, this means we still don’t know exactly how many Galaxy Folds – and W20 5G units, for that matter – are in the hands of customers as of this writing.

Analysts may have a more accurate picture of the situation, as many of them have estimated that Samsung could sell anywhere between 400,000 and 500,000 Galaxy Fold units throughout 2019.

Whatever the case may be, Samsung intends to greatly increase this figure next year, and industry watchers predict that the company might be able to push around 6 million foldable devices onto the market in 2020.

Samsung plans to invest an additional $8 billion in its memory plant in China

According to a report in the Chinese media, Samsung is reportedly planning to invest an additional $8 billion in its Xian memory plant in China. This is in response to a projected increase in demand for memory chips, the report says. When contacted by the Korean media, however, the company’s headquarters declined to confirm the investment plan.

The decision to invest was supposedly communicated by a Samsung Semiconductor executive to Wang Hao, the communist party secretary of Xian, during a meeting on Tuesday. After a couple of years of stellar growth, the company’s semiconductor business has suffered setbacks in recent quarters due to slowing demand, throwing its investment plans into disarray.

The Korean tech giant has already invested $7 billion to build a second memory plant in Xian. If the new proposal materializes, the company will spend an additional $8 billion, bringing the total investment to $15 billion for its chip manufacturing facility in Xian. Samsung started mass producing its first-generation V-NAND chips at its first Xian plant back in 2014. Later, it decided to go for a second plant in the same region to address the growing demand in China.

Recently, there were reports of the Vietnamese Prime Minister asking Samsung to set up a local chip manufacturing plant. There was, however, no commitment from Lee Jae-yong, Vice Chairman and the de facto chief of Samsung Electronics, at the time. The reports indicated that Samsung stands to benefit more by having its memory plants in China, where most of its demand originates.

Samsung Internet gains support for more extensions on Galaxy phones

Samsung Internet browser is one of the most popular first-party apps from Samsung, one that many Android users intentionally choose over alternatives. With every new update, the Korean company continues to make the app better by adding new features that are not yet available on Chrome and other popular Android browsers.

With the release of v11.0, Samsung is set to expand the capabilities of its browser even further by adding support for extensions. Even before this release, Samsung Internet already had limited extension support, primarily for content blockers. The latest version takes this capability further by adding initial compatibility with WebExtensions, a standard used by many Chrome and Firefox extensions.

Samsung Internet is available for non-Galaxy phones as well, but the new extensions (not the already available content blockers) are listed on Galaxy Store, which limits them to Galaxy devices as of now. Even on Galaxy devices, you need to be running Android 10 to use these extensions. This requirement further limits the new feature to a handful of smartphones until Samsung brings the latest Android OS to more devices. At the time of writing, there are only three extensions listed on Galaxy Store, so it’s clear all of this is still in the early stages.

While browser extensions are a standard feature on PC browsers, there are rare and limited in functionality on smartphones. Firefox and Kiwi are currently the only well-known browsers on Android that support extensions. Samsung Internet is the third major and possibly the biggest name so far, with more than a billion downloads on Play Store, to join that list.

Samsung Internet v11.0 appears to be already rolling out to users via Play Store and Galaxy Store. If you haven’t received the update yet, you can download the APK from our database and give it a try.
