Is this what the Galaxy Note 8 will look like?

Could we finally be getting a look at the, well, final version of the Galaxy Note 8? Ice universe, a leakster who has often been proven right, has published a render showing the front fascia of the Galaxy Note 8. We can’t say if this is the real deal, but given the Note 8’s design is expected to be similar to the Galaxy S8’s, can the Note 8 even look like anything else on the front? The only thing that looks out of place here is the slightly larger bottom bezel, but that could be deliberate so that the top and bottom bezels match in size, something that isn’t the case on the Galaxy S8 and S8+.

What we really need is a picture of the back of the Note 8, which is unfortunately still eluding us. Even this render might be a mockup just be based on rumors, maybe even based on Samsung’s teaser of a device that looked like the Note 8, so it’s impossible to say. Also suggesting that this isn’t a render of the final device is the fact that the date on the screen says July 13. Samsung’s official renders usually have the date the device will be announced. Rumors peg the official launch of the Note 8 sometime in the last week of August, but nothing is certain at this point in time.

What do you think about the render you see below? Would you be okay if this is what the Galaxy Note 8 would look like? Sound off in the comments!

Video shows the impressive capabilities of Bixby Voice

Bixby Voice has been the cause of much consternation for Galaxy S8 owners. Samsung hyped it up as one of the biggest features of the new flagship and yet it wasn’t able to deliver Bixby Voice at launch. The company later delayed the feature’s release a couple of times because it wasn’t ready.

Samsung launched a preview of Bixby Voice for users in the United States. The early access program enabled select Galaxy S8 owners to try out the voice functionality. The program also allowed Samsung to collect much needed big data to further improve Bixby Voice.

YouTuber Sakitech has posted a video on his channel detailing the capabilities of Bixby Voice and they’re quite impressive. The video shows that Bixby is capable of performing basic tasks such as taking screenshots, turning on the Wi-Fi, adjusting brightness and more in response to the relevant commands.

It’s even capable of performing advanced tasks such as remembering the parking location, launching the camera and taking a picture even when the phone is locked, adjusting the display resolution, switching video resolution and more.

The video goes to show that Samsung wasn’t kidding about Bixby’s ability to do everything in response to a voice command that the user can do by tapping on the display.

Samsung is yet to confirm when it’s going to release Bixby Voice with support for the English language. A report earlier today suggests that Bixby Voice could be released in the United States on July 18.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) to get Android 7.0 update soon?

Samsung had unveiled the Galaxy A5 (2017) earlier this year running Android 6.0.1 (Marshmallow), but it looks like the phone will soon get the Android 7.0 update. The company received Wi-Fi certification for the Galaxy A5 (2017) running Android 7.0 earlier today, which means that the South Korean smartphone giant is close to releasing the Android 7.0 (Nougat) update to the smartphone.

The Galaxy A5 (2017) features a 5.2-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display with support for Always On Display. It comes with a 16-megapixel primary camera and a 16-megapixel secondary camera, both with f/1.9 aperture and 1080p video recording. The phone comes equipped with an octa-core Exynos 7880 processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, a microSD card slot, and a 3,000mAh battery.

Samsung has already released the Android 7.0 update for various Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series of smartphones, and now it’s time for the Galaxy A series smartphones to get the Nougat update.

Galaxy S8 performs well in unofficial user satisfaction survey

A smartphone-loving Redditor has asked 1,433 Galaxy S8 owners questions, calculated the averages of all of the responses and presented them in a series of tables for technology enthusiasts all over the world to analyze.

“The ratings were generated from a total of 1,433 responses gathered from Reddit (96%); a very small amount coming from XDA Developers (3%) and Facebook (1%),” explains the Redditor, posting under the handle Awesomesauce1492.

Customers are particularly impressed with the handset’s build quality, camera and screen, according to the results, but feel like Samsung could have done better in the software department, with Bixby and TouchWiz falling short of expectations.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to hear that the majority of owners aren’t happy with the physical Bixby button, wishing it could be remapped by default. Although, there are some users who support Samsung’s attempts to block remapping tools.

An impressive 80% of customers revealed that if they could go back in time, they’d purchase the Galaxy S8 again, while a mere 7% said that they weren’t happy with the handset and would opt for a different device.

“With an average satisfaction rating of 4.3/5 and an 80% willingness to buy again, Galaxy S8 owners tend to be extremely satisfied with their purchase,” summarized Awesomesauce1492, adding that there were a number of flaws with the survey.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ review: Samsung brings us the future, but it’s not perfect yet

“My target audience was purely Galaxy S8 owners and, moreover, enthusiasts. These people are likely to have researched the device before purchasing, and may be more likely to defend it when facing outside scrutiny.”

Samsung has a legitimate reason to block Bixby button remapping, whether we like it or not

Most folks agree that the dedicated key for Bixby on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ is a nuisance. It’s not a nuisance because it gets in the way; well, it is, but the bigger reason is that at this point, Bixby doesn’t do anything useful for the vast majority of Galaxy S8 and S8+ owners. Ever since Samsung’s latest flagships were launched, many users have looked for a way to remap the Bixby button’s purpose to launching another application.

Quite a few apps allowing one to do so have cropped up on the Play Store, and Samsung has been trying its best to block the possibility of remapping the Bixby button. It’s something people don’t agree with, but I feel we should also look at the fact that Samsung has a legitimate reason to stop users from changing the purpose of the Bixby button.

Actually, there are a couple of reasons, but the biggest reason is that without that button firing up Bixby (even if it happens when we press the key accidentally, which happens all too often), Samsung has no way of making sure Bixby becomes a part of its consumers’ daily lives. An icon on the home screen won’t do it, and the home button is out of reach as Google mandates that a long press of the home button on every Android device should fire up Google Now, the search giant’s personal assistant.

Apple’s Siri has become synonymous with iPhones and iPads because long pressing the home button on an iPhone or iPad fires up Siri, ensuring that the service is always at the, well, service of the user. Apple does offer a way to completely turn off Siri, but there is no way to reassign the task of long pressing the home button on an iPhone to do anything else. Many users never venture into the device’s settings to turn such features off, which means Siri continues to be at the beck and call of users through the primary way of interaction on iOS devices.

The second important reason I believe Samsung needs to keep the Bixby button doing what it’s meant to be doing is to keep reminding users that it exists, something that will come in handy down the line when the company has developed and enabled voice commands for users outside South Korea. It’s taking time, but if you have seen videos of Bixby’s voice assistant in action, you have seen how handy it can be when you really must get things done on your Galaxy device using your voice.

Bixby can pretty much do everything that you can do by touch, something neither Google Now or Siri are capable of doing. It’s an important feature that Samsung will be pushing to its users in the coming months and years, but would it be of much use if people end up disabling the Bixby button and, therefore, rarely see Bixby on their devices?

Like others, I agree that right now, the Bixby button is a nuisance that gets in the way more often than anyone would like. Remapping it to do something else would be extremely useful, and there are still apps that let you repurpose that button to your requirement despite Samsung’s constant attemps to block these apps.

But let’s face it: Allowing users to do as they please with Bixby’s dedicated key isn’t in Samsung’s best interests, as there aren’t exactly a whole lot of ways that the company could make Bixby a regular part of our lives without that dedicated key. The Bixby key is here to stay, it’s here to get in the way when it can, and hopefully, it will make our lives better once Samsung figures how to get its voice functionality working for folks outside South Korea.

Good thing you can disable Bixby (and many other Samsung apps and services) using a couple of apps found on the Play Store, no root required.

Galaxy J7 (2017) with dual camera pictured yet again

There’s a lot of confusion these days concerning Samsung’s first dual camera smartphone. It was believed for long that this title would go to the Galaxy Note 8. However, recent developments suggest that the company might release a mid-range handset before the Galaxy Note 8 which might be its first device with a dual camera setup.

The Galaxy J (2017) series was launched several months ago and all variants that are available currently don’t feature a dual camera at the back. However, rumor has it that the Galaxy J7 (2017) variant for China is going to have the advanced camera system.

Earlier this week we came across some pictures of this variant (SM-J7310) which revealed that the handset will have a vertical dual camera system. It’s too soon to say if this is really what’s going to hit the market in China or if it’s just a prototype.

It could very well be a prototype. Samsung was rumored to introduce a dual camera system with the Galaxy S8 as well. While that didn’t happen, we’ve seen a couple of prototypes of the Galaxy S8+ with a dual camera.

A couple of new images have now surfaced online. They show off the Galaxy J7 (2017) with its vertical dual camera system. As previously mentioned, it can’t be ascertained at this point in time if what we’re seeing is merely a prototype or the real deal.

It’s unclear if and when Samsung is going to unveil this handset in China.

Bixby Voice release date for US possibly leaked

Samsung has made Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners in the United States wait for a very long time to get access to Bixby Voice. When it unveiled the new flagship in March this year, the company boasted that its new voice assistant can enable users to do everything that they can do by tapping on the display with just voice commands.

However, Bixby Voice wasn’t ready so it wasn’t available at launch. The company later delayed the release multiple times because apparently, it was having trouble making Bixby work with English. Some reports suggested that the lack of big data was proving to be a problem.

Samsung has only released Bixby Voice properly in its home country of South Korea. Galaxy S8 users there can take full advantage of the voice assistant and even perform tasks like sending money. The only caveat there is that the assistant only supports Korean language.

It appears that the Bixby Voice release date for the US has been leaked online today. An unnamed insider has posted a picture of what appears to be an email meant for staff on Reddit. The email claims that Bixby Voice is going to be released on Tuesday, July 18.

The email also contains a link to a webinar training which will help prepare employees to ensure that they are retail ready by launch.

While one can surely call into question the authenticity of this email, it has been so long since we’ve all been waiting for Bixby Voice, it would just be nice if it comes out on July 18.

Galaxy Note Fan Edition teardown reveals that it’s just a Galaxy Note 7 with a smaller battery

After Samsung recalled the Galaxy Note 7 due to its battery problems, the company had stated that it would use the components of the problematic device to make a refurbished device. We came to know earlier this month that the refurbished variant would be called the Galaxy Note Fan Edition. The South Korean brand started selling the refurbished version in its home market last week for KRW 699,600 (or $617). However, the question remained as to how similar this new device is to the original Galaxy Note 7, and iFixit has answered it.

The folks over at iFixit did a teardown of the Galaxy Note Fan Edition and found out that it is essentially the Galaxy Note 7, albeit with a smaller-sized battery and slightly reworked antenna pattern to suit the Korean cellular networks. The new, 3,200 mAh battery is 9 percent smaller than the problematic 3,500 mAh battery that was used in the Galaxy Note 7. It weighs 2.3 grams lighter as well, so we hope that it won’t catch fire. You can see the comparison of the older battery with the newer one in the image below. You can check out more images of the device in the source link.
