Samsung launches Odyssey G9 gaming monitor globally

After unveiling its new Odyssey gaming monitor lineup during CES 2020, Samsung had made the Odyssey G7 and the Odyssey G9 monitors available for pre-order in the US and listed the Odyssey G7 on its South Korean website. Now, the company has announced that it has launched the Odyssey G9 gaming monitor globally.

The Odyssey G9 is the world’s first gaming monitor with a dual-QHD resolution, Nvidia G-Sync, and 1000R curvature. It is also the world’s first monitor to support HDR10+, thanks to its QLED panel with DisplayHDR 1000 certification. The new premium gaming monitor also won the CES 2020 Innovation Award in the Computer Peripherals and Accessories category due to its innovative curved design.

Samsung’s newest flagship gaming monitor has a 49-inch curved QLED screen with 5120×1440 resolution (32:9 aspect ratio), a 240Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, 1000 nits peak brightness, and can cover 95% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. It is compatible with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and Nvidia G-Sync. The monitor’s stand supports rotation, swiveling, and tilting functions, and has a 100×100 VESA mount.

The Odyssey G9 has two DisplayPort 1.4 ports, one HDMI 2.0 port, three USB 3.0 ports (one up, two down), and a headphone port. Gamers get access to features like Black Equalizer and Virtual Aim Point. It is also the first monitor in the industry to receive TÜV Rheinland’s best rating for high performance 1000R Curved Display and Eye Comfort certification.

The monitor comes in the Glossy White color and has the Infinity Core lighting area at the rear that supports 52 colors and five lighting effects. It features various gaming modes, including AOS, Cinema, Custom, DCR, FPS, RPG, and RTS.

Hyesung Ha, SVP of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “Following our recent announcement of the Odyssey G7 curved gaming monitor, the G9 now joins the portfolio as the first dual QHD gaming monitor with 1000R curvature. This further solidifies Samsung’s leadership in the global gaming monitor market, with innovation happening at an unprecedented rate. Samsung’s Odyssey G9 curved gaming monitor takes immersive gaming to the next level, giving any gamer the upper hand.

Samsung finds itself embroiled in an OLED patent infringement lawsuit

A couple of Samsung Group subsidiaries including Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display found themselves embroiled in a new patent infringement lawsuit. The complaint was filed by Japanese OLED display maker JOLED at the US District Court for the Western District of Texas. JOLED seeks remedies including damages and an accounting from Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display, and Samsung Electronics America for patent infringement.

Furthermore, JOLED also filed a complaint in Germany in the District Court of Mannheim, seeking an injunction for patent infringement against Samsung Electronics and its local subsidiaries. JOLED claims that Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display have infringed on its OLED patents by using, selling, and/or offering to sell Galaxy branded phones within the United States, and/or importing Samsung Galaxy branded smartphones into the United States without taking a license.

JOLED holds roughly 4,000 registered and pending OLED patents. The company was formed in 2015 following an alliance between the display divisions of Sony and Panasonic. The company began shipping its first product, a 21.6-inch 4K OLED display, in 2017. JOLED also claims to have started establishing the world’s first mass production line for printed OLED and intends to push the display technology to mass production by the end of 2020.

Given JOLED’s large screen portfolio, the patent infringement lawsuit may or may not be connected with Samsung’s smartphone division but rather its PC monitor and/or perhaps its tablet/laptop product ranges. Meanwhile, Samsung Display is facing competition from China’s Everdisplay Optronics who is now supplying large OLED panels to BBK Electronics and Huawei.

Samsung’s stylish The Serif TV could launch in India next week

Samsung’s The Serif range of smart TVs is said to be launching in India next week. The Serif will be available in three sizes with 50, 55, and 65-inch diagonals, and prices will reportedly start at INR 74,990 ($993) for the 50-inch variant. The 55 and 65-inch models are expected to go on sale for INR 84,990 ($1,125) and INR 139,990 ($1,854), respectively.

Similar to The Frame, which was also released in India last week, The Serif was designed to blend in with its surroundings. The name itself gives away the TV’s exterior design, as it looks precisely like the serifed letter ‘I’ when viewed from the side. The Serif was designed by French furniture designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec to have a timeless look, and Ambient Mode+ contributes further to the TV blending in with the environment. Instead of the screen going blank when the TV is turned off, Ambient Mode+ allows The Serif’s screen to mimic the wall behind, or it can display news and weather information.

Great specs and an Eco package that doubles as furniture

Spec-wise, The Serif has a QLED 4K display that can produce 100% Color Volume in the DCI-P3 color space, and it benefits from 4K AI upscaling. Adaptive Picture automatically adjusts the screen’s brightness and contrast, and Active Voice Amplifier boosts volume and clarity in real time to compensate for environmental noises. The Serif also has an NFC chip for easy smartphone pairing and screen mirroring. It’s also compatible with AirPlay 2 and has built-in virtual assistants including Alexa, Google Assistant, and Bixby.

Like The Sero and The Frame, Samsung’s The Serif ships in an eco-friendly cardboard packaging that can be repurposed into a piece of furniture such as a TV console, a magazine rack, a coffee table, or even a pet house.

Samsung is bringing back removable batteries with the Galaxy A01 Core

Samsung’s upcoming budget phone equipped with a removable battery has been approved by Bluetooth and the certificate reveals an interesting detail about the device: its name. Up until now, Samsung’s mysterious budget phone was known solely by the model number SM-A013F, leading some people to believe that the device will be released as the Galaxy A01e. We previously pointed out the reason why this is highly unlikely and Bluetooth SIG has now confirmed our expectation. According to the certificate that was published earlier today, the SM-A013F will hit the market as the Galaxy A01 Core.

Samsung’s Galaxy Core lineup makes a comeback?

Samsung’s Core-labeled smartphones are budget devices through and through. The most recent phone to carry the Core branding was the Galaxy J2 Core (2020) – a re-release of the original Galaxy J2 Core that was unveiled in August 2018. There was also the Galaxy A2 Core in-between the original J2 Core and its refresh, and the reason why we bring up these Galaxy Core models is because they all share one characteristic. You’ve guessed it: they all have a user-removable battery. And true to the moniker, the upcoming Galaxy A01 Core is also expected to follow this all but forgotten design.

The Galaxy A01 Core should have dual-SIM capabilities, according to Bluetooth, and it should be equipped with a MediaTek MT6739WW SoC paired with 1GB of RAM, judging by a previous benchmark. Its user-removable battery will have a capacity of 3,000mAh, and the phone should run Android 10, or at least the simplified Go Edition designed for smartphones equipped with fewer than 2GB of RAM.

Have removable batteries remained an important aspect for you or have you given up on this concept over the past few years? Will you be interested in buying the Galaxy A01 Core thanks to this unusual characteristic? How much would you be willing to pay for Samsung’s upcoming budget phone? Let us know in the comment section below.

More users are facing green tint display issues on different Galaxy devices

Do you remember the Galaxy S20 green tint issue that reared its head not long after the flagship’s release? Samsung did fix it with a quick firmware update for the Galaxy S20 a couple of months ago, but it looks like the problem is making a comeback for other Galaxy smartphone models.

Multiple new threads on Samsung’s US, EU, and Indian community websites reveal that the green tint problem is now affecting a variety of other Galaxy devices. The common theme across these user reports is that the green tint issue appeared after a recent firmware update. The problem seems to be affecting devices like the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9 series, and the Galaxy Note 10 Lite. As brought to our attention by SamMobile readers @panther_64 and @ahmedRaisMU on Twitter, the Galaxy S10 Lite hasn’t escaped the wrath of the green tint issue either, as it persists even after the recent June 2020 security patch.

It seems as if the green tint problem occurs mostly when the display is set to a low brightness level, so at least it doesn’t always affect the user experience. And without understating the existing problems experienced by affected users, the good news is that the green tint issue does seem to be somewhat of a rare occurrence, at least judging by the number of complaints found on Samsung’s community websites as of this writing. The problem exists for some users, but for now, it doesn’t look like it’s widely spread.

If this green tint issue is indeed similar to the one that marred the Galaxy S20 a couple of months back, it shouldn’t take too long for Samsung to figure out the exact cause of the problem across different Galaxy models and address it with a firmware update. We’ll let you know as soon as we find out more. Until then, join us in the comment section and let us know if you’re experiencing the green tint problem on your phone.

Unlocked U.S. Galaxy Note 10s getting camera improvements and more

The unlocked variants of Galaxy Note 10 units sold in the U.S. seem to be receiving their second sizable software update this month. While the last one brought the June 2020 Android security update in a sub-200MB package just 20 days ago, its follow-up is already here and is over three times as heavy – at least for the unlocked Galaxy Note 10+ (SM-N975U1). As confirmed by SamMobile reader Madhusha Ambawatta, the update for this particular model is identified by build number N975U1UEU3CTE7. Given how this release is coming directly from Samsung, it’s to be assumed the rollout also encompasses the regular Galaxy Note 10s (SM-N970U1).

Samsung’s own changelog summary pushed out to users mentions a handful improvements, covering everything from camera and touchscreen performance to Wi-Fi stability and security fixes.

600MB worth of Galaxy Note 10 improvements

While the Korean tech giant has yet to publish a detailed breakdown of the new update on its support pages, it appears the software upgrade is primarily focused on making the overall Galaxy Note 10 experience more consistent. Complete device images for eligible models will soon be available for download from SamMobile‘s firmware archive, as is always the case. Of course, you can also attempt triggering the OTA release manually by launching your Settings app, tapping the Software update option near the bottom, and finally performing the Download and install check on the following screen.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s stylus-equipped smartphone series is expected to receive its annual refresh in just over a month. Recent reports point to the Galaxy Note 20 range launching in early August, likely alongside the Galaxy Fold 2 and Galaxy Tab S7 lineups.

Galaxy Tab S5e Android 10 update starts rolling out

Samsung has been on a roll over the past few months, and it has released the Android 10 update to various smartphones and tablets. Earlier today, the company released the Android 10 update to the Galaxy Tab S4, and now, it has released Android 10 for the LTE variant of the Galaxy Tab S5e.

The Android 10 update has started rolling out to the Galaxy Tab S5e in the UK. The new update carries firmware version T725XXU1BTF7 and has a file size of 2061.83MB. It brings along the June 2020 security patch, but we currently don’t know for sure if it is One UI 2.0 or One UI 2.1. However, we assume that it is One UI 2.1 since the Galaxy Tab S6 and the Galaxy Tab S4 recently received the One UI 2.1 update with Android 10.

The new software update brings improved Dark Mode, smoother animations and transitions, Google’s full-screen UI navigation gestures, and refreshed icons and colors. Other new features include Digital Wellbeing, more emojis, better camera app layout, redesigned Device Care section, and better text visibility over wallpapers. Samsung has also updated most of the stock apps with better UI design and more features.

If you’re a Galaxy Tab S5e user from the UK, you should now see the update notification pop up in the notifications section. If you haven’t received it yet, you can check for the update manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping Download and install. If you don’t want to wait for the OTA update, you can download the firmware file from our firmware section and flash it manually.
