Galaxy S20 sales fall behind its predecessor amid pandemic

The Galaxy S20 series was unveiled in February and the devices went on sale in most of the markets by the end of March 2020. However, the latest flagship smartphone series from Samsung didn’t meet the company’s own sales expectations. Apparently, it couldn’t even reach the sales of its predecessor in the Korean firm’s home market.

According to a new report from Yonhap News, sales of the Galaxy S20 series are hovering below the sales of the Galaxy S10 series. The main reason behind disappointing sales is said to be a lower demand for consumer products amid the COVID-19 pandemic. South Korean mobile carriers claim that the cumulative sales of the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra are just 60 percent of the sales of the Galaxy S10 series.

Samsung has not been reporting official sales numbers for the Galaxy S20 series, but it claimed that sales of its latest flagship smartphone series were around 80 percent of the Galaxy S10 sales. Due to weaker-than-expected numbers, Samsung’s IT and Mobile Communications division is estimated to have posted an operating profit of KRW 2.5 trillion (around $2 billion) or lower during Q1 2020. The company will publish its final numbers later this month.

It’s not just Samsung, though. It is being estimated that most smartphone and consumer electronics brands will post lower numbers this year when compared to their last year’s numbers. Market research firm Strategy Analytics revised its global smartphone sales estimates for 2020 from 1.3 billion units to 1 billion units.

Chrome not smooth at 120Hz refresh rate on your Galaxy S20? Here’s a simple fix

The Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra feature 120Hz refresh rate displays that considerably improve the user experience (at the expense of some battery life). While not every game takes advantage of the high refresh rate, most non-gaming apps do. That includes all of Google’s apps except for Maps, which operates at standard 60 Hz refresh rate at all times.

However, if you use Google Chrome, you may have noticed that it sometimes starts acting all sluggish when you’re scrolling through a website and makes it seem like the phone has switched back to 60Hz refresh rate even though it hasn’t (the switch back to 60Hz happens when the phone’s temperature goes above 40C). This doesn’t seem to happen very often, but when it does, what can you do to get Chrome back to normal?

Well, there’s a simple fix: If you notice that scrolling in Chrome isn’t as smooth as it should be when your Galaxy S20, S20+, or S20 Ultra is set to 120Hz refresh rate, you can force close the browser and reopen it.

Force closing Chrome and reopening it does the trick

There are two ways you can close Chrome and clear it from memory. The first method is the quickest: Simply tap the Recents (multitasking) button to see all running apps, look for the Chrome tab, and swipe it up. Then, open Chrome again from the home screen/app drawer and it should be working normally again (that is, scrolling should once again be butter smooth).

If that doesn’t work, here’s what you need to do. Long press the Chrome shortcut on your home screen or in the app drawer and select App info. Then, tap the Force stop option and tap OK on the popup, which will clear Chrome from memory for good and make scrolling in the browser smooth again. Don’t worry, Chrome will still remember all the tabs you had open and will reload them the next time you fire it up.

If Chrome feels sluggish too often, try Samsung Internet

If you don’t find Chrome on your Galaxy S20, S20+, or S20 Ultra working as smoothly as you like, and if you don’t care for syncing your browser data across your mobile and PC, you can try using Samsung Internet for your browsing needs. Samsung Internet works great at all times, has better performance than Chrome, and has a lot of extra functionality to offer, including the ability to use ad blockers.

Samsung has taken the issue-ridden Galaxy S20 Ultra firmware off the air

The Galaxy S20 series has received quite a few updates in a short time. Unfortunately, the last update that was released globally for the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra turned out to have too many issues, including the presence of a green tint on the display when high refresh rate is enabled and, in the case of the Galaxy S20 Ultra, slower super fast charging than what the phone was initially capable of.

And it seems Samsung realized the extent to which the last update caused issues on the Galaxy S20 Ultra: It has now taken the latest firmware for the device off the air. If you hadn’t already downloaded the latest update — software version G988xXXU1ATCT — on your phone, you will probably not be able to download it now, either over the air or through Samsung’s Smart Switch software for Windows and Mac.

The actual reason for the firmware removal is unclear

It’s unclear if the removal of the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s firmware from Samsung’s servers is related to the issues that have come to the fore, since firmware for the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ (both the LTE and 5G variants) are still online. The actual reason may be something else, and all we can do is hope that the next update will bring an end to all the problems once and for all.

As we told you recently, Samsung is working on a software update to fix the display’s green tint issue. We don’t know when that update will come out, though we’re assuming Samsung will take as long as it needs to perfect the next firmware release before pushing it out to customers so it can avoid further criticism.

Exclusive: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G will have 256GB base storage

The Galaxy Z Flip might have a lot going for it, but unlike the Galaxy Fold, it didn’t launch with the latest and greatest specs. The Galaxy Z Flip runs on last year’s Snapdragon 855 processor, has dual rear cameras with a primary sensor that isn’t as good as what you get on the Galaxy S20 or even the Galaxy S10, and it also doesn’t support 5G connectivity.

However, as we recently revealed, the lack of 5G connectivity will be addressed by Samsung with a 5G variant of its clamshell foldable phone later this year. Now, we have learned a few more things about the Galaxy Z Flip 5G (we’re assuming this is what the device will be called).

Same base storage as the LTE variant

The Galaxy Z Flip 5G, like the LTE variant, will have 256GB of storage. There’s no 512GB model in development, nor is there a 128GB variant, at least not at this time. Samsung is probably looking to keep the price tag of the device under control by going with the same amount of storage as the LTE variant, which costs nearly $1400. That said, the option of 512GB storage would have been nice since the Z Flip doesn’t have a microSD slot.

We have also learned that the 5G Z Flip carries model number SM-F707B for the international market and SM-F707N for South Korea. SM-xxxB model numbers are usually assigned to 5G Galaxy devices launched in Europe and markets like Australia, but just how widely the Galaxy Z Flip 5G will be available remains to be seen. A North American release can be expected as well, though we do not see any signs of a US variant of the device at the moment.

New Galaxy Tab S6 update rolling out with stability improvements

Earlier this month, Samsung finally started updating its flagship tablet, the Galaxy Tab S6, to Android 10. To make up for the wait Tab S6 owners had to go through, Samsung included One UI 2.1 in the update, bringing a couple of Galaxy S20 features to the tablet. Now, just two weeks later, Samsung has released a new Galaxy Tab S6 update — featuring software version T860XXU1BTD1 — based on Android 10.

Currently available for the Wi-Fi variant of the tablet in Germany, the update improves overall stability of functions, according to the changelog. It probably fixes a few bugs that were present on the Android 10 and One UI 2.1 release, though Samsung isn’t offering any details. Oddly enough, this new update was released in China as the initial Android 10 and One UI 2.1 firmware and came with the April security patch, but the firmware rolling out in Germany now still includes the March security patch.

The update is only available over the air at this time; you will be automatically notified once it’s ready for download, though you can grab it manually by tapping Download and install in your tablet’s Settings » Software update menu. As noted earlier, only the Wi-Fi model is receiving this new update, though the LTE model will no doubt follow in a few days.
