Samsung officially teases Galaxy M51, live images and specs revealed

The Galaxy M51 is turning out to be a killer mid-range smartphone. While the phone hasn’t been launched yet, its design and features have been almost leaked in full. Four months ago, we had exclusively confirmed its existence and the internal storage specs. Later, we revealed the phone’s camera specs, and then its internal hardware and battery capacity were leaked as well. Now, the company has officially started teasing the smartphone for the Indian market.

Samsung has listed the Galaxy M51’s teaser on Amazon India’s website with the tagline ‘meanest monster ever.’ The teaser image shows the front part of the phone with a Super AMOLED Infinity-O display. Separately, the upcoming mid-range smartphone’s specs have been confirmed via Google Play Console. The listing reveals that the phone has a Full HD+ (2400×1080 pixels) display resolution, a Snapdragon 730 processor, 6GB/8GB RAM, and that it runs Android 10.

Live images of the Galaxy M51 have been leaked as well. Tech publication 91Mobiles published four live images of the smartphone, showcasing its Infinity-O display, selfie camera, rear-facing camera setup, and the rear design. The smartphone features a 32MP selfie camera and a 64MP+12MP+5MP+5MP quad rear-facing camera. A 7,000mAh battery powers the device and the phone supports 25W fast charging. The Galaxy M51 features a side-mounted fingerprint reader.

It was reported earlier this week that the Galaxy M51 will be launched in India in the second week of September and that it could be priced between INR 20,000 (around $269) and INR 25,000 (around $336). The smartphone will be available in two colors: black and white.

Fortnite Season 4 Android download made simple by Galaxy Store

Fortnite fans will remember that the popular battle royale game was kicked out of Google’s Play Store two weeks ago. Epic, the game’s developer, implemented a direct payments system in the game which violated Google’s in-app purchase rules. Android users were only left with one option and that was to download the game through the Epic Games App.

This tussle that Epic is in with Google and Apple didn’t really concern Android users who owned a Samsung handset. Some of you may remember that Samsung actually ran a Fortnite promotion when the popular game first made its way to Android. It has since released a couple of custom skins as well. Fortnite has continued to be available through the Galaxy Store. As loyal fans await the Fortnite Season 4 download tomorrow, Samsung customers aren’t worried one bit.

Fortnite Season 4 download available through Samsung Galaxy Store

Fornite Chapter 2 Season 4 is going to launch tomorrow. Epic has hinted in several tweets that there’s a collaboration with Marvel in the upcoming season, the company has teamed up with Marvel in the past as well. As players have come to expect with these season updates, there may be changes to the map, new points of interest, cosmetics, in-game rewards and more.

The Fortnite Season 4 download for Android will be available through the Samsung Galaxy Store immediately after Epic releases it tomorrow. Therefore, Android users who own a Samsung device will have the simplest update experience. Fortnite has been available in the Galaxy Store since 2018 and it continues to be available regardless of the Epic vs Apple/Google fight.

Players on iOS have been stung by this tussle, though. Epic has confirmed that they will not get access to season 14 tomorrow. It has also said that they’re going to lose cross-platform play with non-Apple platforms, meaning that starting tomorrow, iOS device owners will be on an outdated version of the game and will only be able to play among themselves.

Why I think ditching the Galaxy Note series could lead to great things

You may have heard the recent rumor about Samsung considering ditching the Galaxy Note series next year and fit the Galaxy S21, and possibly the Galaxy Z Fold 3, with an S Pen instead. You might be on the fence regarding the validity of this rumor, as you should be considering it is a rumor after all. But countless other rumors have become reality in this industry so let’s pretend for a moment that this one will also materialize next year. What would this mean for Samsung and its customers, and would it be a good or a bad thing to repurpose the S Pen and kill the Galaxy Note lineup in the process?

At first glance, and as a Galaxy Note user myself, the idea that Samsung will stop creating new devices in this series is alarming. But after some consideration, I’m starting to lean towards the opposite side for more than one reason. Please bear with me while I explain.

Putting the S Pen on the map like never before

There’s no secret that the Galaxy S series is more popular than the Galaxy Note. It’s always been the case and this will never change, otherwise it would’ve happened by now. And as a Galaxy Note owner myself, I think it’s vital for the S Pen to be adopted by as many users as possible.

In reality, the S Pen’s popularity appears to have peaked in the hands of the Galaxy Note series, but the Galaxy S lineup has the potential of pushing the stylus to new heights in terms of customer adoption. This is true even if the S Pen would be reserved only for the Galaxy S21 Ultra and wouldn’t be available along with the base model or the Galaxy S21+.

More to the point, with the S Pen leveraging the Galaxy S series to increase in popularity, Samsung could have more reasons to focus on improving this beloved accessory/input device further with new software additions and better hardware every year.

And if the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will adopt an S Pen as well, it would not only be a perfect match for the form factor but would also mean that S Pen enthusiasts will have a new device to look forward to every six months. The S Pen will become ubiquitous, and in my opinion this would undeniably be a good thing for Galaxy Note enthusiasts, even if the brand itself would cease to exist.

A more streamlined flagship lineup

The recent Galaxy Unpacked event was very busy. Busier than usual, as Samsung has unveiled a multitude of devices including two smartphones, two tablets, two wearables, and a foldable premium device, as well as the Thom Browne Edition. The launch of the Galaxy Note now coincides with that of the emerging Galaxy Z Fold series and there’s no denying that Samsung’s lineup is getting a bit crowded.

Samsung’s flagship portfolio historically consisted of a new Galaxy S lineup in H1 and a new Galaxy Note lineup in H2. But its portfolio has considerably widened over the past couple of years. Now there are three Galaxy S and two Galaxy Note variants coming in every year, not to mention the Lite editions and the new foldables.

Something’s gotta give, and if Samsung decides that one of its flagship series needs to go away, I’m sorry to say but the Galaxy Note is the only logical contender. The Galaxy S series is simply too popular and the company’s foldables are here to reinvent the mobile market, so they’re not going away without a fight. For years Samsung has invested in this technology more than any of its rivals, and there’s no way the company will turn its back on foldables now.

We could argue that there is a considerable price gap between the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy Z Fold series so there’s no reason to fear that the latter will cannibalize the former. They could coexist, but for how long? Samsung is trying to democratize foldable display technology and if the launch of future Galaxy Note and Galaxy Z Fold models continues to overlap, there will be a time when the Note lineup will be overshadowed by its folding relative.

That moment might come shortly after the Galaxy Z Fold series gets its own S Pen. And if you ask me, I’d rather see the Galaxy Note series go out in a blaze of glory while gifting its S Pen to both the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Z Fold series, rather than seeing it withering away in time. And it will wither if devices like the base Galaxy Note 20 model become the new standard… Quality over quantity, right folks?

It could lead to even better firmware support

Samsung recently committed to providing three major Android OS updates for its phones and that’s a huge deal for Galaxy fans. But with a more streamlined flagship portfolio and fewer models to worry about, Samsung’s software support might become even better.

Granted, I wouldn’t say it’s worth trading the Galaxy Note series for that, but if Samsung decides to discontinue the series anyway then faster firmware updates could become an added bonus to this shift in strategy.

And no, we probably won’t be guaranteed four Android OS updates per device, but streamlining its flagship lineups could allow Samsung to bring firmware updates even faster throughout its entire smartphone portfolio, from budget to high-end.

So, to wrap things up, if the Galaxy Note series will be going away next year, it might not be a bad thing as long as the S Pen continues to live on through other devices. On the contrary, there’s a chance that the S Pen and its suite of apps will become better and even more popular if paired with the Galaxy S21 Ultra. A more focused range of flagships could lead to less confusion, better products, and possibly even better firmware support. As long as the S Pen doesn’t go away, I’d be willing to trade the Galaxy Note moniker for these benefits.

What do you think would happen if the Galaxy Note series ceases to exist next year and the S Pen gets adopted by other Samsung flagships? Would it be a positive change or a bad move? Feel free to share your thoughts below, but do keep in mind that none of this has been confirmed.

Galaxy M31s in India will be back in stock tomorrow but prices got hiked

The Galaxy M31s was released in India three weeks ago and the device has enjoyed tremendous success. After all, the Galaxy M31s offers insane value for money, so why wouldn’t it? But customers looking to buy the device right now will find that Galaxy M31s stocks have been depleted at Samsung’s online shop as well as Amazon.in. Thankfully Samsung will mend the situation tomorrow, August 27, when stocks will reportedly be replenished.

Galaxy M31s prices appear to have been bumped up

The Galaxy M31s is not in stock at Samsung.com as of this writing but the phone’s prices continue to be listed, and it appears that Samsung India has bumped them up a notch.

The 6GB and 8GB Galaxy M31s variants were originally released for INR 19,499 ($262) and INR 21,499 ($289), respectively. However, Samsung India now lists a price tag of INR 20,499 ($276) for the 6GB model and INR 22,499 ($303) for the 8GB flavor. More so, the company’s online shop suggests that these prices have been discounted by INR 2,500 ($33).

Mind you, even with these new prices, the Galaxy M31s is still cheaper than the Galaxy A51 and a better value proposition, but it is something to consider. For context, the Galaxy A51 with 6GB and 8GB of RAM costs INR 23,999 ($323) and INR 25,999 ($350), respectively.

Have you bought the Galaxy M31s yet? And in case you missed the original launch, will you be buying this incredible mid-range phone once it’s back in stock? The comment section is yours.

Galaxy Tab S7 duo is available for pre-booking in India at discounted prices

Following a couple of recent events hinting at an imminent release, the Galaxy Tab S7 series is finally available for pre-booking in India where prospective buyers are looking at a starting price of INR 55,999 ($753). Samsung is releasing three variants in India, namely the Wi-Fi-only and 4G-enabled Galaxy Tab S7 along with the 4G Galaxy Tab S7+. The Wi-Fi-only and 5G-enabled Galaxy Tab S7+ variants are missing from the official launch announcement as well as the company’s online store, so it remains unclear whether or not they will be sold in India eventually.

Samsung India is offering pre-booking incentives including discounts on the Keyboard Cover for both tablet models and up to INR 6,000 cashback on HDFC credit and debit cards. The Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy Tab S7+ Keyboard Covers normally costs INR 15,999 ($215) and INR 17,999 ($242) but customers pre-booking the tablets can acquire the accessory for INR 5,999 ($80) and INR 7,999 ($107), respectively.

In addition, Galaxy Tab S7 / Galaxy Tab S7+ buyers in India can take advantage of a discount of 22.6% on Microsoft 365 Family, same as Galaxy Note 20 owners.

Galaxy Tab S7 and Tab S7+ prices in India revealed

As mentioned before, the Wi-Fi Galaxy Tab S7 is available on pre-booking terms for INR 55,999 ($753). The 4G variant costs INR 63,999 ($861), whereas the 4G Galaxy Tab S7+ is available for INR 79,999 ($1,076). Interestingly, these prices have been slashed by INR 4,000 ($53), INR 6,000 ($80), and INR 5,000 ($67), respectively.

This essentially means that the intended entry-level price would be INR 59,999 ($807) instead of INR 55,999 ($753), and that the 4G Galaxy Tab S7+ would normally cost INR 84,999 ($1,144). All variants come with 128GB of built-in storage.

Samsung hasn’t offered any details on the matter but it’s likely that the discounts are valid only throughout the pre-booking period. If you’re planning on buying one of the Galaxy Tab S7 variants but don’t want to pay the full price, you might have to hurry.

Likewise, Samsung hasn’t revealed exactly when the pre-booking period is scheduled to end but the Galaxy Tab S7 series could start shipping on September 7, according to a recent rumor. Feel free to consult the links below for more details.

Samsung’s efforts to combat COVID continue in the USA and South Korea

Samsung has been fighting against the spread of COVID-19 since the first quarter of the year, not only in South Korea but also in other countries including India, Brazil, and the USA. The company’s efforts to combat the novel coronavirus strain weren’t limited to shutting down factories temporarily when the situation called for it; instead Samsung got actively involved.

The company revealed this week that it has donated over $4 million to organizations in New Jersey, California, and Texas since the onset of COVID-19. More so, with the help of Samsung’s leadership prowess, the New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund has donated nearly $18 million to 460 non-profit organizations since March. Samsung supported Silicon Valley Strong’s efforts in California to provide nearly 100,000 PPE units to medical professionals. The company also helped organizations like the North Texas United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and Central Texas’ All Together ATX to provide food and resources to their communities.

Samsung will continue to support the fight against COVID-19 in the USA with its upcoming fall programs including Month of Service which allows Samsung employees to support those in need, whether it be in-person or through virtual means.

Samsung is converting facilities in Korea into COVID-19 treatment centers

Meanwhile, Samsung also announced today that it’s converting two of its facilities into temporary treatment centers for COVID-19 patients. The number of coronavirus cases in Seoul is rising again and the tech giant is taking measures to prevent potential hospital bed shortages.

As a result, the Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Global Campus facility in Seoul along with the Samsung C&T International Business Management Research Center located in the Gyeonggi Province – seen in the gallery below – will soon be used as COVID-19 treatment centers. The latter facility will be operational starting August 31. It will be equipped with 180 beds and it will treat patients with mild symptoms.

Samsung Group will appoint doctors and nurses from its hospitals to work in rotation at these facilities in groups of three. Each group will comprise one doctor and two nurses.

We’ll keep you posted with further updates and developments. Stay safe.

Exclusive: Samsung Galaxy A12 budget phone to feature 64GB storage

It has been six months since Samsung launched the Galaxy A11. The budget device has since been released in several markets across the globe. We hear that the company is now working on the successor of this device.

As you’d expect, Samsung Galaxy A12 is going to be another budget phone. It won’t be drastically different compared to its predecessor but storage is one area where we’ll see a big improvement.

Galaxy A12 to get more internal storage

We hear that the Galaxy A12, bearing model number SM-A125F, is now in development at Samsung. It’s going to feature 32GB of storage on the base model with customers have the option to purchase it with 64GB internal storage as well. The Galaxy A11 only has 32GB storage.

Expect it to have the same LCD display as its predecessor as well as the triple camera system. The details of the Galaxy A12’s camera setup are unknown at this time but it may not be that different from the 13MP primary, 5MP ultrawide and 2MP depth sensor found on the Galaxy A11. A capacitive fingerprint sensor is also present on the upcoming device.

No further details are available at this point. Perhaps Samsung might ship the device with a larger battery, at least larger than the Galaxy A11’s 4,000mAh battery. Since the device has only just entered development it might take a few months before it sees the light of day. When it does, the Galaxy A12 will be offered in black, white, red and blue colors.

Galaxy Z Fold 3, Z Fold S, and Z Fold Lite already in the works: rumor

Samsung may have already decided on no fewer than three foldable smartphone models it’s going to release in the near future. The alleged trio consists of the Galaxy Z Fold Lite, Galaxy Z Fold S, and the Galaxy Z Fold 3. That’s according to a newly surfaced insider claim that’s pretty light on the details and should be taken with some reservations, though its source was one of the earliest to report on the existence of the original Galaxy Fold 5G last year.

The Galaxy Z Fold Lite will supposedly leverage a type of plastics called colorless polyimide (CPI), as opposed to the Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) of the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The latter, however, may offer S Pen support, meaning it would feature a digitizer beneath its foldable display. Digitizers themselves are relatively bendable already, but implementing one into a foldable flagship would likely result in one of the most expensive smartphones Samsung ever put out.

Finally, the Galaxy Z Fold S will supposedly be able to fold both in and out, as per the same source.

How many foldables in a year is too many?

For what it’s worth, the Galaxy Z Fold Lite was already rumored for some time now, with previous reports indicating Samsung is targeting a 2021 release at a sub-$1,000 price point. And a return to CPI film may just about be the only way to deliver such an affordable foldable smartphone in that time frame. As a reminder, the 2019 Galaxy Fold leveraged CPI to achieve its foldable form factor, but the subsequent Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold 2 both turned to UTG.

If nothing else, all three monikers seem to be in line with the laughable naming strategy Samsung’s been pursuing in the foldable segment as of recently.

Samsung TVs get RNIB’s accreditation for meeting accessibility criteria

Samsung has announced that its 2020 TVs have received the Tried and Tested rating from the UK’s RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind) for meeting the accessibility criteria for the visually impaired. This is the first time in the industry that a TV has received the accreditation from the agency.

RNIB awards the Tried and Tested accreditation to apps, products, services, and websites that meet the criteria for accessibility for people with impaired vision. This shows Samsung’s commitment to making its products easier to use for all consumers. The company has worked with RNIB since 2013 to make sure that its products are suited with proper features to offer accessibility for all users.

Samsung TVs come with features such as High Contrast mode and Voice Guide since 2014. The High Contrast mode displays graphic information with opaque black backgrounds and white font for enhanced visibility. The Voice Guide feature enables the TV to read aloud program information. RNIB presented the ‘Inclusive Society Award’ to Samsung in 2016.

Samsung’s 2020 TVs come with upgraded Voice Guide, Digital Magnifier, and Focus Enlarge features

The South Korean firm’s 2020 TV lineup comes with an upgraded Voice Guide feature that reads program information, remote control instructions, and accessibility features. Users can also adjust the pitch and speed of the voice. The Digital Magnifier feature enhances and expands images and text on the TV during smartphone mirroring.

The Focus Enlarge feature magnifies specific fonts on the TV that are related to the menus, TV control, and volume control. Samsung’s new smart TVs also come with a feature that automatically recognizes and enlarges the sign area. They also offer the ability to adjust and move subtitle positions.

Kangwook Chun, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “With a growing variety of content and features, people are now having more fun with their smart TVs. Samsung is fully committed to providing comprehensive accessibility features on its TVs so that every user can enjoy their favorite content much more easily.
