Samsung SDI says no indication of its batteries in the Galaxy Note 7 being faulty

You might have read several reports recently of the Galaxy Note 7′s battery exploding while the handset was being charged. Even though Samsung didn’t say this itself, some believe the fact that it has delayed Galaxy Note 7 shipments for additional tests goes to show that the company is concerned about this as well. Samsung has only said that the Galaxy Note 7 shipments are being delayed so that it can perform some additional tests.

Samsung is counting on the Galaxy Note 7 to continue the great sales momentum it has got going with the Galaxy S7 series into the second half of this year. It’s believed to have sold over 500,000 units of the Galaxy Note 7 already and any major problems with the handset could prove very costly for the company. The market has responded to the uncertainty by pushing’s Samsung’s stock price to two-week lows even though it has recently been soaring to new heights primarily on the back of the performance of its mobile business. Samsung has not confirmed the markets in which shipments have been delayed but local reports out of South Korea suggest that all major carriers – SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus Corp – are affected by these delays.

Samsung SDI, a sister company of Samsung Electronics and one of the battery suppliers for the Galaxy Note 7, has said that it has received no information to suggest that the batteries it supplies for the Galaxy Note 7 are faulty. There’s always the possibility that it might not be a major issue after all. Either the issues could be limited to a particular batch of units or third-party chargers were involved in the incidents where the Galaxy Note 7′s battery exploded. There’s no conclusive evidence available to the public right now to say with certainty what caused the batteries inside those units to explode.

Galaxy J2 DTV is the first handset from Samsung featuring a digital TV tuner

Samsung unveiled a new variant of the Galaxy J2 about two weeks ago. The Galaxy J2 DTV is going to be released exclusively in the Philippines but it’s just like any other mid-range handset. With a 4.7-inch 540 x 960 pixel resolution Super AMOLED display, 1.3GHz Exynos 3457 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage and 5-megapixel rear camera the specifications are nothing to write home about. However, what sets it apart from the rest is the fact that it has a digital TV tuner.

The Galaxy J2 DTV is actually the first handset from Samsung that features a digital TV tuner. It enables users to watch broadcast television in the Philippines wherever they might be. It’s unlikely that people will use this handset with a 4.7-inch display to watch TV all the time but some users will appreciate having the feature. Since it only has a 2,000mAh battery, users will find themselves needing a power outlet after some time if they’re watching broadcast TV.

Even though it’s likely that the Galaxy J2 DTV might be sold via eBay in markets in the West, the digital TV feature might not work given that the Philippines uses the Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting (ISDB) standard whereas Europe and America use the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) and Advanced Television System Committee (ATSC) standards respectively for free-to-air broadcast TV. Galaxy J2 DTV will only be sold in the Philippines for 6,990 Philippine Pesos ($150).

AT&T will carry the NumberSync-compatible Gear S3 frontier from Samsung

AT&T has confirmed today that it’s going to expand its smartwatch lineup this year by carrying the Gear S3 frontier smartwatch from Samsung. AT&T customers will get a variety of exclusive experiences on the Gear S3 including but not limited to NumberSync. Yes, Samsung’s latest smartwatch is compatible with NumberSync on AT&T.

NumberSync is a new feature that AT&T launched earlier this year. It enables users to access the same number on both their smartwatch and smartphone so they are never disconnected even if they are out and about with just the smartwatch and their phone is at home. They can continue to send messages and make and receive calls on the same number as their mobile phone. The Gear S2 already supports this feature and the Gear S3 is going to support it at launch as well.

AT&T customers will also be able to use the Gear S3 frontier to manage their DirecTV because it will double as a remote for DirecTV which enables them to find and watch their favorite shows, change channels and schedule recordings. With the AT&T Digital Life app users will also be able to monitor their connected home right from the wrist.

The carrier says that it’s going to provide more information about pricing and availability of this smartwatch in the weeks to come. AT&T rival T-Mobile has also confirmed that it’s going to launch the Gear S3 on its network later this year in the fall.

T-Mobile is going to sell the Gear S3 frontier starting this fall

Samsung has unveiled its new smartwatch today and it can now get down to the business of selling the Gear S3. Most major retailers will be selling the device while the LTE model is going to be sold by mobile carriers. One of the fastest growing mobile carriers in the United States has now confirmed that it’s going to sell the Gear S3 frontier later this year.

Two models of the Gear S3 have been launched today – the Gear S3 classic and the Gear S3 frontier – the latter being the one with LTE compatibility. What this means is that you can use the smartwatch to access the internet, stream music, send messages and even make phone calls without pairing it with a smartphone. No pricing information has been confirmed yet as it will be the carriers who will decide how much they will charge their customers for this smartwatch. T-Mobile has only confirmed today that the Gear S3 is its first LTE smartwatch and that it’s going to start selling it later this year in the fall.

Gear S3 iPhone support confirmed by Samsung

Samsung finally unveiled the Gear S3 smartwatch today. It’s so much more than what the rumor mill expected it to be. Samsung has stepped up the smartwatch game with its latest product and this will undoubtedly be one of the hottest smartwatches on the market this year. Like its predecessor the Gear S2, the new Samsung smartwatch works with any Android smartphone that’s running version 4.4 or up. Also like its predecessor, the Gear S3 will also work with the iPhone.

We have known for a long time now that the Gear S2 is compatible with the iPhone. Samsung has not yet released the Gear Manager app for iOS which is required to make the smartwatch work with an iOS device. The company recently opened up a beta program to test the app so it may not be long now before it’s released. A Samsung executive confirmed the Gear S3 iPhone support at the event today so now we know that eventually the company’s latest and greatest smartwatch will also work with an iPhone. However, no timeframe has been provided as yet by Samsung.

Samsung isn’t planning on discontinuing the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic

Less than an hour ago, Samsung finally took to the stage to take the wraps off the much-anticipated Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier, and after playing around with the devices for a short while, we are pleased to report that we’re very impressed with the refined design and slew of added functionality that they have to offer. However, their larger faces and wider bodies certainly don’t appeal to everyone, which has left many people wanting to pick up the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic instead.

Fortunately, Samsung has revealed that it will not be discontinuing these devices. The Gear S2 and Gear S2 classic will, in fact, be the subjects of a much-needed price cut and will be placed alongside the Gear S3 classic, Gear S3 frontier and Gear Fit 2 in Samsung’s wearable lineup on its online store. The South Korean company has also announced that it will distribute a new firmware update for both watches before the end of the year packing all of the new software features that debuted on the Gear S3.

Samsung Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier smartwatches are now official with newer designs and better hardware

Samsung has unveiled its new smartwatch, the Gear S3, today at its pre-IFA 2016 event in Berlin. Similar to last year’s Gear S2, the Gear S3 comes in two variants, the Gear S3 classic and the Gear S3 frontier. These smartwatches feature various improvements over their predecessors including larger displays, better screen protection, beefed up performance, more accurate activity and fitness tracking, and improved battery life among other things.

The Gear S3 features a slightly larger 1.3-inch circular Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 360×360 pixels, resulting in a pixel density of 278ppi. Moreover, the whole display is protected by Corning’s new Gorilla Glass SR+ panel, which was announced yesterday. It is made specifically for wearable devices and smartwatches, providing a tougher, more scratch-resistant and crisper displays.

Samsung states that its new smartwatches also feature a ‘Full Color Always On Display’ mode, allowing 16 million colors to be displayed on the screen (such as a watch face with full colors) even in sleep mode. Samsung’s iconic rotatable bezel around the display for UI navigation is present in the Gear S3 as well along with two physical buttons on the right side of the display.

Samsung Gear S3 Full Color Always On Display Mode

The Gear S3 frontier has more rugged looks which would suit more to consumers who exhibit an active lifestyle, while the design of the Gear S3 classic resembles that of an expensive mechanical timepiece, thanks to its minimalistic and elegant design. Both smartwatches are compatible with 22mm watch bands, so it’s quite easy to buy any watch band from a store and customise the Gear S3 according to your liking.

Similar to its predecessor, the Gear S3 uses the same 1GHz dual-core processor and 4GB internal storage, but Samsung has increased the RAM from 512MB to 768MB. Both smartwatches feature Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi b/g/n, NFC, and GPS connectivity. The Gear S3 frontier will also be released in a variant with 3G and LTE connectivity. These smartwatches are the first from the company to use MST technology for Samsung Pay.

On the software side of things, the Gear S3 runs Tizen-based Wearable Platform 2.3.2, and they can be paired with any Android smartphone running Android 4.4.4 and upwards featuring 1.5GB or more RAM. The company is currently testing iOS compatibility using a beta testing program. The final version of its Gear Manager app should be released for iOS devices soon.

SAMSUNG CSC

New features on the Gear S3 smartwatch include a way to accept or reject calls and snooze alarms using the rotating bezel. Moreover, users can draw alphabets on the Gear S3′s display using their fingers to automatically convert them into text and emojis. There’s a new Reminders app that, as the name suggests, allows creating reminders and to-do lists on the watch itself.

The SOS feature alerts friends, family or emergency professionals in case the Gear S3 user comes across a crisis. Samsung has collaborated with BMW to bring the BMW Connected car app to the Gear S3. It can be used to unlock the connected car, check its fuel, and receive other notifications from the car. Samsung is also bundling Tizen-based Knox security feature on the Gear S3 so that enterprises can keep a tab on information security.

SAMSUNG CSC

There are a bunch of sensors on these smartwatches including an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, gyro, and a heart-rate monitor. The barometer allows measurement of atmospheric pressure and altitude. An ambient light sensor, which doesn’t get featured on most smartwatches in the market, changes the Gear S3′s screen brightness automatically. The Gear S3 frontier comes with LTE and a loudspeaker so that users can take calls without a need for a smartphone.

Both variants of the Gear S3 come packed with larger 380mAh batteries, and Samsung claims that they can last up to four days of moderate usage. The battery can be charged using WPC inductive wireless charging using the bundled charger. These smartwatches are slightly thicker than their predecessors at 12.9mm, and retain the IP68 certification for dust and water resistance. The company didn’t announce the pricing or availability details yet, but we will update you with related information soon.

Who is: Yvan Arpa and Arik Levy and what do they have to do with the Gear S3?

Samsung has unveiled the Gear S3 smartwatch today and you might have seen the company mention Yvan Arpa and Arik Levy. They are not Samsung employees but were involved in the design process of the smartwatch. So you might be thinking who is Yvan Arpa and Arik Levy, we have compiled a short profile on both of them for you.

Yvan Arpa – image credit: Watchonista

Yvan Arpa is a Switzerland-based luxury watch designer who started out in the watch industry as an executive for Sector Sport Watches where he launched the No Limit concept. He later joined the Richemont Group for Swiss brand Baume & Mercier. He also has stints at Hublot and Romain Jerome. It goes without saying that Arpa is a man who knows his way around the Swiss watch industry. He has since launched his own company called Luxury Artpieces.

He was involved in the Gear S3 design process and says that “With the Gear S3, we sought to integrate tradition and technology, bringing to the forefront an immensely intelligent smartwatch. The large watch face was inspired by styles emerging from the world’s most premium watch brands. A classic timepiece combined with the latest innovations in technology, the Gear S3 is bound to withstand the test of time.”

Last year, Samsung partnered with renowned Italian designer Alessandro Mendini to create exclusive bands for the Gear S2 and later teamed up with many designers and brands to offer even more variety. This year it’s kicking things off with a special partnership with famous artist and industrial designer Arik Levy. Samsung will launch artistic watch faces and strap designs in collaboration with Levy. The artist is best known for his sculptures, unique installations and limited-edition designs which stem from his belief that “the world is about people, not objects.”

Arik Levy – image credit: Azure Magazine

“It was interesting and fun to collaborate with Samsung on creating unique and evolving watch face concepts and watch bands for the Gear S3. Inspired by my artwork, installations and sculptures, we created features that not only technology-savvy consumers will love but also those who place a high value on art, design, freedom of the mind and aesthetics,” Levy said. Watch faces and bands designed by Arik Levy will be launched later this year through select channels.

Samsung Gear S3 hands-on: A story of refinement

The Gear S2 was the first round smartwatch from Samsung and it showed that the company ripped up everything it had on smartwatches and went back to the drawing board to start from scratch. It didn’t need to take such drastic steps with the Gear S3 as the successor already had a good base to build upon. This is why if you’ve spent time with the Gear S2 your first impression of the Gear S3 will be that of refinement. Samsung has taken a good product and pushed the envelope which has resulted in substantial improvements.

Design

SAMSUNG CSC

SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC

The moment you set your eyes on the Gear S3 you will immediately feel that it’s bigger than its predecessor. That’s true. The Gear S3 is bigger and heftier than the Gear S2 aside from the fact that it also weighs more. Samsung has complemented that by kicking up the finish of this product by several notches. Samsung says that it took inspiration from premium Swiss timepieces and it shows.

Samsung conducted market research and found that people buy two different kinds of watches: a conventional dress watch that they wear with formal attire and a sports watch which they can wear with just about anything. You feel that Samsung has made this distinction clear with the Gear S3 classic and the Gear S3 frontier. The latter has a sporty premium finish and bulk to it which is common with sports watches while the Gear S3 classic gets a conventional elegant finish so it won’t look out of place when you’re wearing a suit. One great change is that the buttons on the side are of the same size on both the classic and frontier models.

Display

SAMSUNG CSC

SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC

This is also Samsung’s first smartwatch to feature Corning Gorilla Glass SR+ which has been designed specifically for wearable devices to provide a tougher and more scratch resistant display. The Gear S2 features a 1.2-inch circular Super AMOLED display with 360 x 360 pixel resolution. Both models of its successor have a slightly larger 1.3-inch circular Super AMOLED display with the same pixel resolution. It’s only a small difference in size but it’s noticeable. The slight increase in size makes the display easier to read. The full-color Always On Display which supports 16 million colors and a separate second hand at first glance make the Gear S3 looks quite like a normal wristwatch. Samsung says that these refinements in the display don’t affect the battery as much since the smartwatch can go up to four days on a single charge.

Rotating Bezel

SAMSUNG CSC

SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC

This is one of the defining features of the Samsung Gear smartwatches. Samsung brought a new concept to the smartwatch market last year with the Gear S2′s rotating bezel. The refinement here is just as visible as it is elsewhere on the Gear S3. Samsung has redesigned the bezel so it’s a lot smoother. In keeping with the distinction between a conventional and a sports watch, the Gear S3 frontier’s rotating bezel gives you satisfying clicks when you rotate the bezel. If you’ve ever owned one of those premium Swiss pilot’s watches with rotating bezels you will know exactly what I’m talking about. You don’t get the clicks on the Gear S3 classic as the bezel rotates very, very smoothly.

Features

SAMSUNG CSC

SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC

There won’t be a learning curve for you if you’ve used the Gear S2. However, it does come with the great features we exclusively reported on to aid those who live an active lifestyle. The watchfaces have been refined as well with a glare feature so they appear as if they’re real watchfaces when the watch moves with your wrist. Since there’s going to be an LTE model of the Gear S3 frontier users will also be able to make phone calls right from their wrist. All of this is powered by Tizen platform version 2.3.2.

Final Word

SAMSUNG CSC

If you liked the Gear S2 then you’re going to love the Gear S3. It’s a story similar to that of the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S7. Sure, the Galaxy S6 was a great phone but the refinements Samsung introduced with the Galaxy S7 went a long way to turn the company’s fortunes around. There’s precisely the case here. The Gear S3 is a story of refinement through and through and it certainly won’t be surprising if Samsung ends up selling more of it than the Gear S2.
