[Update: Dictation working] Samsung is rolling out Bixby updates across the globe

Samsung’s voice assistant Bixby was first launched in South Korea several months ago. The company eventually released it for users in the United States as well. It’s certainly going to roll out Bixby in other markets across the globe but Samsung is yet to confirm when it will do that.

We recently reported that there’s a possibility that Samsung is preparing Bixby Voice for a global roll out. It would make sense for the company to do so. Galaxy S8 owners in markets where Bixby isn’t available have already been made to wait for a very long time. It’s about time that they get access to this feature.

Samsung is rolling out updates for a bunch of Bixby apps today across the globe. The apps that have been updated today include Bixby, Bixby PLM, Bixby Wakeup, Bixby Dictation and Bixby Global Action. We’ve received reports of these updates from the United Kingdom, South Africa, India, Netherlands, Germany and more.

It seems that Samsung is only rolling out app updates for now and it’s yet to flip the server-side switch which will enable Bixby for users in these markets.

One UK-based user who received these updates reached out to Samsung over Twitter and was told that Bixby Voice isn’t available in the UK at this point in time. Our own UK-based team members have confirmed that despite the update, Bixby Dictation isn’t working as yet.

Samsung should really be more clear about its global launch plans for Bixby. This confusion isn’t helping anybody.

Update: One of our team members in Germany is able to use dictation feature, though he finds that the transcription quality leaves a lot to be desired. Do try on your own device with Samsung’s default keyboard by holding down the Bixby key to start dictating.

Samsung SmartThings helps you easily set up your smart home

Samsung acquired connected devices manufacturer SmartThings back in 2014 for nearly $200 million. It started selling the company’s new home automation hubs from September 2015. SmartThings also launched its first new product line after being acquired by Samsung that month.

It launched the new SmartThings Hub which can connect to more than 100 smart home devices through one simple app. Compatible connected devices like motion sensor, switches and cameras were also launched.

Samsung later launched a SmartThings Home Monitoring Kit for $249. The kit includes a SmartThings Hub as well as several compatible accessories. Customers get two Multipurpose Sensors, a Motion Sensor and an Outlet.

The company posted a new video on its official YouTube channel today showcasing just how easy the SmartThings Hub makes it to have connected devices working in harmony. It effectively acts as the brain of the smart home.

It connects wirelessly with a wide range of smart devices and makes them work together. Compatible devices include speakers, locks, lights, thermostats and more. Users can then control their smart home devices through the SmartThings app or Amazon Alexa.

Samsung wants customers to know that SmartThings is the easiest way that they can turn their home into a smart home. A SmartThings Home Monitoring Kit can often be picked up at a discount so keep your eyes peeled for deals if you’re interested in it.

Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) spotted at TENAA

We’ve known that Samsung is working on a successor to the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 for a while, and now the 8-inch slate (SM-T385C) has been spotted on Chinese certification authority TENAA’s online database, leading us to believe that it will be released in the near future.

The tablet, which has been dubbed the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017), is expected to ship with a 1.4GHz Snapdragon 427 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 5MP front-facing shooter—so it’s not going to win any awards for performance.

A recent benchmarking test revealed that the slate will ship running Android 7.0 Nougat skinned with Samsung’s stunning Experience user interface, bringing it in line with the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and a handful of the firm’s other latest devices on the software front.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any information with regards to pricing. If we were to hazard a guess, however, we’d say that it will be priced in the region of $130 to $150 when it (presumably) hits the shelves in the United States later this year. Nothing’s confirmed, though.

Samsung teases the Galaxy Note 8’s dual camera in new video

Samsung hasn’t confirmed any details about the Galaxy Note 8 so far. However, there have been countless leaks about the handset’s features and specifications. All reports and rumors have claimed that the Galaxy Note 8 is going to have a dual camera.

We’ve also seen the handset’s dual camera in all of the leaked renders and live pictures that have surfaced online so far. It’s a certainty. The Galaxy Note 8 will be Samsung’s first flagship smartphone with a dual camera.

The Galaxy Note 8’s dual camera is now being teased by Samsung itself. The company has posted a new teaser on its official YouTube channel for South Korea. It provides a glimpse of the kind of pictures that users will be able to take with the new flagship.

Samsung has also released another teaser that highlights the S Pen. The Galaxy Note handsets have always been much loved because of the stylus and the new flagship will certainly provide similar functionality.

The Galaxy Note 8 is due to be unveiled on August 23. Samsung is going to conduct an event in New York City where it will confirm all of the details about the Galaxy Note 8. Pricing and availability information will also be confirmed at the event.
