Galaxy A50 to get monthly security updates along with the Galaxy Fold

Samsung has updated its Android security update schedule to include the Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy A50, and the Galaxy Xcover 4s in the monthly category. The Galaxy Xcover 4s is the surprising addition here, as it’s the first Xcover smartphone to get the privilege of monthly security updates. Regular security updates for the Galaxy Fold are a no-brainer; the Galaxy A50 is unique in that it has received a security update every month despite having been in the quarterly schedule since launch, so Samsung is pretty much making the monthly schedule official for the device to match the actual update frequency.

The Galaxy A50 is perhaps the most successful of the Galaxy A series phones Samsung has flooded the market with this year, and it looks like that may be the reason behind the company’s impressive support for the device. Previous A series devices that have been in the monthly security update schedule include the Galaxy A5 (2017) and Galaxy A8 (2018) – in fact, both devices are still scheduled to get monthly updates along with older flagship phones like the Galaxy S8. Of course, that doesn’t mean an update actually comes out for these phones every month, but they are officially expected to do so.

And now, the Galaxy A50, Galaxy Xcover 4s, and the Galaxy Fold have joined the list. It remains to be seen how long the two mid-range phones will stay in the monthly schedule, but as of this moment, owners of these devices get the same privilege as owners of Samsung’s flagship devices — including the $2000 Galaxy Fold — as far as security updates are concerned.

Microsoft updates Outlook with support for the Galaxy Watch

If you’re someone who uses their smartwatch to decide if an email is worth pulling out your smartphone for, you’re going to love what Microsoft has done with Outlook today. The company today announced several improvements for Outlook for Android one of which is support for the Galaxy Watch.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch, this includes the Watch Active series as well, can now work with the Outlook app to show notifications for emails that you receive in Outlook on your phone. You will be able to tend to them quickly through the smartwatch.

Outlook for Android adds support for the Galaxy Watch

The official changelog for this latest Outlook for Android version mentions that support for the Galaxy Watch is now included. What that means is that you’ll be able to see your messages and act on them from the smartwatch itself.

It will work much like the native email implementation does on Samsung smartwatches. You will receive push notifications about emails and will also be able to shoot quick replies. There are a bunch of canned responses to choose from or, if you can bear it, it’s also possible to type out a response using the on-screen keyboard.

Microsoft has rolled out the latest version of Outlook for Android so you can get this functionality on your Samsung smartwatch now.

Samsung reminds us of the best Galaxy Note 10 Bixby Vision features

Earlier today, Samsung decided to highlight and discuss at length about some of the more interesting features in Bixby Vision as a way to promote the fresh Galaxy Note 10 series. Bixby Vision is part of the company’s AI-powered assistant Bixby and leverages the smartphone’s cameras to enhance the user experience through augmented reality (AR).

Galaxy Note 10 Bixby Vision – Home décor and Styling

One of the main features in Bixby Vision, called Home décor, lets users “decorate” their living spaces with augmented reality furniture designed by popular home décor store Wayfair. Users can point the Galaxy Note 10 camera towards an empty space in their room, call upon Bixby Vision, and select Home décor. The tool categorizes furniture by room type, with each category listing a variety of items designed by Wayfair.

AR furniture pieces will maintain their correct scale inside the viewfinder – thanks to the camera’s depth-sensing capabilities – and objects can even be moved around and rotated.

Styling works on similar principals as Home décor, but instead of helping you find the right furniture, it lets you virtually try on various Ray-Ban glasses on selfie shots. Users can browse through the available models and even check for discounts on Ray-Ban eyewear.

Enhanced Live Translation and Picture Play

Again, both Enhanced Live Translations and Picture Play seem like two sides of the same coin, as both tools let users point the camera at real-life objects to gain more information. Evidently, Live Translation focuses precisely on translating text on the fly through the camera viewfinder.

Picture Play, on the other hand, allows Galaxy Note 10 Bixby Vision users to point the camera at a poster or billboard and gain information such as user reviews, plot overviews, and cast. Some posters can even “contain” trailers which can be view directly in the viewfinder.

Do you use Bixby Vision often? Which of its features do you find most useful and/or entertaining? Do you use any of these tools exemplified by Samsung in its latest push for promoting the Galaxy Note 10 stateside? Share your experience in the comment section below.

Samsung Chromebook 4 and Chromebook 4+ launch quietly in the US

It’s been a few years since Samsung unveiled the Chromebook 3, and now the company is ready to push two brand new models to the market. Samsung just introduced the Chromebook 4 and Chromebook 4+ in the United States without much fanfare. They are available for $229 and $349, respectively, and both models are expected to ship to customers by October 9.

Chromebook 4 specifications

The Chromebook 4 has an 11.6-inch display with a resolution of 1366 by 768. It’s powered by a dual-core Intel Celeron N4000 CPU featuring an Intel UHD Graphics 600 GPU, and 4GB LPDDR4 RAM. The device has 32GB of eMMC storage, a microSD card slot, one USB-C, and one USB 3.0 port, a 720p camera, and two speakers.

It also offers Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 ac connectivity, and it’s powered by a 5,070mAh battery rated for up to 12.5 hours on a single charge. Out of the two new Chromebooks, the non-Plus model is actually the one promissing higher battery autonomy.

Chromebook 4+ specifications

The Chromebook 4+ shares a few specifications with the cheaper model, including the Intel Celeron N4000 processor, connectivity features, the stereo speakers, and the 720p camera. It’s also powered by the same 5,070mAh battery but offers up to 10.5 hours on a single charge, which is two hours less than the Chromebook 4, and about half an hour less than the Chromebook 3. This is, in part, due to the larger 15.6-inch display with a higher pixel count of 1920 by 1080.

The Chromebook 4+ has 6GB LPDDR4 and ships with 64GB of eMMC storage. It also features one USB 3.0 port and two USB-C ports, decreasing the chances you’d need a dongle.

Are you a Chromebook 3 user? Will you upgrade to one of the newer models? Or perhaps you’ve never used a Chromebook and you’re considering it? Check out the Chromebook 4 and Chromebook 4+ store pages on Samsung’s US portal, and feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Samsung teases seemingly-imminent Galaxy Tab S6 India launch

Samsung is certain to bring the Galaxy Tab S6 to India. The official Samsung India Instagram page just shared a teaser image with the tablet along with the caption “Coming Soon.” No other details regarding exact availability and pricing were revealed, but the tablet is already available in the US and various European countries for the starting price of $650.

This might sound like a fairly high price for a tablet, but it is justified because the Galaxy Tab S6 is simply the best Android tablet money can buy in 2019. It packs numerous high-end components and comes with a redesigned S Pen, as well as a dual main camera system – a first for a Galaxy tablet.

India could be a fitting market for the Galaxy Tab S6

Despite its relatively high price, the Galaxy Tab S6 has the potential of becoming quite a success in the Indian market, particularly because the segment seems to be healthier here compared to other regions. The 4G tablet market segment actually grew in India throughout the first quarter of the year, and Samsung maintained its top spot with the help of its mid-range tablets, such as the Galaxy Tab A 8 (2019).

The Galaxy Tab S6 is closer to being a laptop replacement than any of Samsung’s previous Android-powered tablets, and this is partly thanks to the optional keyboard, and partly to DeX and the software experience as a whole.

Once again, there are no official pricing and availability details for the Galaxy Tab S6 in India just yet, but we reckon the tablet should hit the shelves by the end of the year. We’ll keep you up to speed as soon as more details emerge. Until then, feel free to join us in the comment section below and let us know if you plan on buying the Galaxy Tab S6 once it arrives in a store near you.

Thanks for the tip, Satyakumar G.

Galaxy S11’s 5x optical zoom sensor to enter final testing soon

Samsung is soon going to start testing the future camera system of the Galaxy S11. According to local media outlet TheElec, South Korean test socket manufacturing expert MecaTech Systems is reportedly going to supply Samsung with test sockets for the flagship’s periscopic camera.

Samsung Galaxy S11 camera to enter testing soon

Test sockets such as those supplied by MecaTech Systems are being used to perform final tests on components before they’re shipped for assembly. Therefore, if MecaTech Systems is indeed shipping test sockets to Samsung for its next flagship’s camera, this means that the company should already have a clear idea of what optical sensors the Galaxy S11 will employ.

The Galaxy S11 is expected to boast 5x optical zoom capabilities, marking a significant upgrade over the current 2x zoom optics. The flagship is also said to feature the 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX as its main camera which, once again, would represent a huge departure from the 12MP main sensor used by Samsung for its Galaxy S10 and Note 10 flagships.

Samsung hasn’t been locked in a race for camera megapixels for years, and instead, the company focused on improving low-light photography along with other, arguably more important areas. But as more competitors from China continue to push for more megapixels, their rival OEMs – including Samsung – might start doing the same.

The Samsung Galaxy S11 could be unveiled in the third week of February so there’s ample time for leaks, rumors, and speculations. Time will tell how many of these recent reports will turn out to be accurate, but what we do know so far is that the flagship will launch with Android 10 and should boast a refreshed version of One UI. We’ve also learned it will ship in a range of familiar colors.

October security patch now available for the Galaxy J4+ and J8

Samsung has been rapidly releasing the October 2019 security patch to many of its devices. The Galaxy J4+ and the Galaxy J8 are the latest to join this list. Both are budget devices from last year and part of the now-dead Galaxy J series.

The October update for the Galaxy J4+ is currently rolling out in Portugal, Romania, Hungary, Spain, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Ireland, and a few other regions. It appears it’s the Galaxy J4+ on Vodafone that’s receiving the update in most of these markets. The OTA for the Galaxy J8, meanwhile, is out only in Brazil as of now.

Samsung is yet to detail the security fixes included in the October 2019 SMR (Security Maintenance Release). However, a separate report mentioned it patches a severe vulnerability in select Samsung devices. We have to wait for the company’s October security bulletin to know the list of all Android and Galaxy-specific vulnerabilities patched by this update.

Given these are old budget devices, it’s doubtful the release brings any new features. Do let us know if you come across any noteworthy changes after installing the update.

Since Samsung rolls out software updates in stages, not all eligible devices and users may receive the OTA notification at once. To manually check and trigger the update, go to Settings, select Software Update, and tap on the Download updates manually option. Alternatively, you can also download the latest firmware for the Galaxy J4+ and Galaxy J8 from our database and manually flash it.

Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ get October security update

The Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ are now receiving the October security update. Where Samsung has been making Galaxy S10 owners wait until the final week or so for almost every security update, the company has been remarkably fast with Galaxy Note 10 updates. The September security update for the Note 10/10+ came within the first week of the month, and the October update has been released quickly as well.

At this month, the Galaxy Note 10 is getting the update in Spain while the Note 10+ is being updated in France, with firmware versions N970FXXU1ASJ2 and N975FXXU1ASJ2 for the Note 10 and Note 10+ respectively. While we don’t yet have a changelog, we flashed the October firmware on one of our Galaxy Note 10 units and didn’t see anything different or any new feature. We will continue to dig further to be sure the update only includes the new security patch; do leave a comment below if you find something after installing the update on your Note 10 or Note 10+.

As usual, you can download the latest update over the air. Just open the Settings app on your Note 10 or Note 10+, navigate to Software update, then hit the Download and install option. You might need to do this a couple of times for the update to show up, and since these updates are released in stages, you might also have to wait a few hours for the OTA to be available. Firmware for the new software are up in our firmware archive – the update is only available over the air in France at this moment, but we expect that to change soon.

Samsung heir visiting India, possibly for 5G-related talks

According to Yonhap News, Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong is currently visiting India “to check the world’s largest smartphone maker’s businesses there.” While there’s no official word on his order of business in the country, it is being speculated that Jae-yong’s visit could be in relation to Samsung making further investment in India and comes on the heels of the company shutting down its last smartphone factory in China.

Jae-yong could also meet with Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, for talks on the latter’s plans for deploying 5G networks in India. Reliance, under the Jio brand, has the largest 4G network coverage in India, and it built that network with Samsung’s 4G equipment. Reliance is the sole buyer of Samsung’s 4G equipment in India; the Korean giant is hoping to change that by teaming up with other operators in the country for 5G equipment, but Reliance will most likely continue to be its biggest customer.

Jae-yong’s current visit is likely to be more focused on the investment angle, as he will reportedly meet the country’s prime minister during the visit. Samsung is said to be looking at Vietnam and India as two key locations for making up for the complete half of production in China, and the company has already been making its devices locally for the Indian market under the country’s Make in India initiative. The initiative was launched under current Indian PM Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Initial stock of the Galaxy Fold sold out in 30 minutes in India

Despite the high price tag and questions over durability, the Galaxy Fold continues to be a sought-after device in all the markets where it’s currently on sale. The same appears to be true in India as well as the initial stock of the Galaxy Fold reportedly sold out in 30 minutes after pre-bookings were open on Samsung’s online store on October 4, according to an IANS report.

While that sounds impressive, it’s worth noting that Samsung apparently sold a total of only 1,600 Galaxy Fold units in India – a country with more than a billion people. Nevertheless, it is still noteworthy given how quickly the stock vanished in a price-conscious market like India. Moreover, all these pre-bookings are confirmed sales as the customers were required to pay the full price upfront while placing the order.

The report also states that Samsung has temporarily closed pre-bookings until further stock arrives. The already-placed orders will be delivered to the customers through a concierge on October 20. Buyers will also get access to a dedicated expert on call 24×7 for any queries or concerns about the foldable smartphone.

The Galaxy Fold is priced at Rs. 1,65,000 in India, which puts it in the luxury smartphone segment. Along with the device, the customers also get Galaxy Buds and an Aramid fiber case in the box. To allay fears over durability, the Fold comes with one-year Infinity Flex Display Protection, which allows customers to repair or replace a damaged display at a discounted price of Rs. 10,500

October security update released for the Galaxy Note 9

Samsung has released the October security update for the Exynos-powered Galaxy Note 9. The Galaxy Note 9 is the second Galaxy flagship to be receiving the October update – the Galaxy S10 5G was the first one. The regular Galaxy S10 devices will probably not be receiving the update anytime soon, as it was only two weeks ago that they got the September update, which included many of the new features that debuted on the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+.

The Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ may very well be next in line, however, as the previous update for both phones was released a little over a month ago. The Android 10 beta should also be coming out sometime this month for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series. Samsung didn’t announce the Android 10 and One UI 2.0 beta in September and proved our exclusive report partially wrong, but we have our fingers crossed the company will not disappoint us as far as the actual release of the beta software is concerned.

The Galaxy Note 9 update that’s rolling out now doesn’t seem to bring any new features, although the October patch itself is quite an important addition. It comes with software version N960FXXS3CSI5 and is currently available in Poland, France, Portugal, Serbia, Baltic, Romania, Bulgaria, and Switzerland. You can download the update over the air from Software update menu of your phone’s Settings app, or you can upgrade by downloading the latest firmware from our website and flashing it on your device manually.

Have you received the October update on your Galaxy Note 9 yet?

Galaxy A70s preview: Is the 64MP camera enough of an upgrade?

We liked the Galaxy A70. It was the first mid-range Galaxy phone (and the second device overall, after the Galaxy S10 5G) with Samsung’s 25W charging tech, and it was an excellent device. We thought it was a media consumption powerhouse – the faster charging was complemented by a large battery that could power the big and beautiful 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display all day long. The rest was standard mid-range Galaxy fare, like cameras that work well in the daytime but not so much in low-light conditions, fairly good performance, and a loudspeaker that isn’t really loud or impressive in any way.

Galaxy A70 hands-on impressions

I mention the loudspeaker here for a reason: The Galaxy A70 had a beautiful AMOLED display and all-day battery life, but its loudspeaker was horribly quiet, so much so that it was only useful at full volume. And you’d think Samsung would want to fix a device’s shortcomings with an iterative upgrade like the Galaxy A70s, but the company has instead focused on increasing the megapixel count of the primary rear camera and making the back of the device more beautiful. The loudspeaker is still pretty quiet, as I’ve discovered in a day of using the Galaxy A70s.

Galaxy A70 hands-on preview

The Galaxy A70s features a new 64-megapixel rear camera, the highest yet for any Galaxy phone and a 2x jump over the Galaxy A70. The rear panel looks prettier now thanks to what Samsung calls a ‘3D Prism’ design that adds criss-cross lines to further enhance the gradient effect – Samsung sent us the Prism Red variant that looks absolutely stunning. That’s it for the upgrades you get – Samsung hasn’t even updated the One UI version from 1.1 to 1.5, something it did do for the Galaxy A50s that it launched recently.

And that’s actually a shame and shows us how inconsistent Samsung can be even here in 2019. The Galaxy A70s is costlier than the Galaxy A50s and the least Samsung could have done was put the same software on both, but it hasn’t done so. Sure, One UI 1.5 doesn’t bring a lot of new features to the Galaxy A50s, but that’s no reason for Samsung to release a costlier device with older software. It just reeks of complacency and is a good indication that the Korean giant is just rushing these phones out the door.

Galaxy A70 hands-on preview

As for the 64MP camera, I can’t really give you a verdict just yet, but a quick comparison with the Galaxy A50s’ 48MP camera shows me that the 64MP A70s camera doesn’t make a whole lot of difference. There’s slightly higher detail when you zoom in on shots, and it seems to focus better at faraway objects at night. However, the differences don’t seem sufficient enough to make the 64MP camera an attractive feature other than being a higher number on the spec sheet.

It’s more or less a Galaxy A70, and that’s not a bad thing

I’ll need to further test the Galaxy A70s to say if it’s worth your hard-earned money. Out of the box, however, I feel it’s more or less a Galaxy A70 – even the price tag is the same, at least in India (Rs. 28,990, or ~$410, for the 6GB+128GB configuration). It makes me wonder if I should spend time using it as my primary device for a full review, because for anyone wondering if they should buy the Galaxy A70s, I can already answer with a resounding yes since it builds on what was already a very nice mid-range smartphone.

Galaxy Fold 5G will be restocked in the UK on October 10

Samsung UK has revealed that interested customers in the country who couldn’t get a Galaxy Fold 5G in the first round of sales will be able to get their hands on one from October 10. The Galaxy Fold has been in short supply ever since it went on sale, both because it’s an innovative new device and because Samsung is only making a limited number of units. Samsung says the Galaxy Fold 5G sold out in the UK because of high consumer demand and is now working on restocking the foldable phone/tablet later this week.

Once more stock arrives, the Galaxy Fold 5G will be available for purchase from Samsung’s Experience retail stores and from EE stores. EE is the exclusive carrier partner for the Galaxy Fold in the UK, and the country also has only the 5G variant available for purchase. The 5G variant, in addition to having faster mobile connectivity, has a slightly smaller battery (4,235 mAh; the LTE variant has a 4,380 mAh battery) and comes with only one SIM slot. The rest of the specs are the same as the LTE Galaxy Fold.

Interested in buying the Galaxy Fold in the UK? You might want to keep an eye out on Samsung’s official website so you can order one for yourself as soon as stocks come back in. Oh, and don’t be turned off by the folding tests that have been making the rounds online. The Galaxy Fold may have a plastic screen that can be scratched easily, but those tests are far from indicative of real-world usage and the Fold is more durable than they would have you believe.
