You won’t believe how much someone paid for a Galaxy S6 edge Iron Man Edition

A few weeks ago, Samsung released an Iron Man-themed limited edition variant of its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6 edge. It became a smash hit in China as soon as it was released. Samsung made only 1,000 such units in Korea, and the website selling those devices crashed due to heavy traffic. So it was evident from the word go that they device will be sold for much higher than its original price tag. We even reported that these devices were listed on eBay with insane price tags.

Now, we’ve come to know that someone purchased a Galaxy S6 edge Iron Man Edition for an insane $91,000 during an auction. Business Korea is reporting that JD.com, China’s second biggest online retailer, auctioned off a Galaxy S6 edge Iron Man Edition on June 11 for 568,788 yuan (or $91,635). That’s insane, right? It’s original price was 1.199 million won (or $1,079).

Reportedly, around 16 million units are going to be sold in China, but that still won’t be enough due to country’s high population. To top that off, Chinese culture symbolizes the number 6 and the color red. The device that was being auctioned had 66 in its serial number and it has a color combination of gold and red. Now wonder that the device was sold at such a high price.

Samsung registers a trademark for Galaxy S6 Note, new device upcoming?

Earlier today, we broke news of a larger variant of the Galaxy S6 edge with a 5.7-inch display dubbed Galaxy S6 edge Plus. Now, Samsung has registered a trademark with a naming convention that is unheard of, the Galaxy S6 Note. Is this an upcoming smartphone from Samsung?

It is not uncommon for vendors to file trademarks to protect their branding identity, which is most likely the case here. Samsung already has clearly-defined product lineups in the high-end segment, with the Galaxy S series being the mainstream flagship and the Galaxy Note line for those looking for a larger screen. Trademarking the Galaxy S6 Note is just Samsung’s way of making sure that obscure Chinese vendors don’t get it to first.

Samsung has filed the following application to trademark S6 Note:

Exclusive: Android 5.1.1 being tested on the Galaxy Note 4

Samsung took considerable time with the Android 5.0 update for the Galaxy Note 4, and by the time the update started rolling out, many had probably lost interest. But the release of Android 5.1 by Google gave everyone another update to start looking forward to, and once again, Samsung has been moving almost at a snail’s pace. The Android 5.1 update for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge has still not been released, though it’s supposed to be pretty close to going live.

Galaxy Note 4 owners might be worrying that the wait will be even longer for them going by how Samsung has treated the device until now. However, screenshots that we have received of the AnTuTu benchmark app running on a Galaxy Note 4 have revealed that Samsung has already started working on Android 5.1.1 for the Note 4. We have been told that this is one of the first releases of 5.1.1 on the device, though we’re not aware of any new features in this build over Android 5.0.

We have, however, heard that Samsung could be testing a 64-bit build on the Note 4, though it’s something you should take with a pinch of salt especially since it might not actually make it into the final update as only the Exynos model has 64-bit support (which lies dormant.) Furthermore, there is no telling when Android 5.1.1 for the Note 4 will go live – it could take a month or two, or it might just follow the 5.1.1 update for the Galaxy S6 duo.

Exclusive: Galaxy S6 edge Plus will have 5.7-inch dual-edge display, Android 5.1.1

There’s a larger version of the Galaxy S6 edge undergoing development over in Samsung’s backyard, that much has been made certain by numerous rumors and a leak that actually showed us such a device in the flesh. Given the beauty that is the Galaxy S6 edge, these leaks have gotten us pretty interested. We reached out to our insiders to see if we could get more information on the Galaxy S6 edge Plus (as the rumors call it), and managed to dig up two important details.

First, the display. The Galaxy S6 edge Plus will have a 5.7-inch display, with curves on both sides like the Galaxy S6 edge. Rumors had pointed at a 5.5-inch display, but it looks like Samsung thinks 5.7-inch is a better size (or the company is just more comfortable with the size because of its last two Galaxy Note smartphones.) Secondly, the Galaxy S6 edge Plus will come with Android 5.1.1 preloaded out of the box – unsurprising, as anything below 5.1.1 would be totally unacceptable at this point.

The phone will launch sometime in the third quarter this year, but we have no information on a concrete launch date. As always, we’ll be sure to share any more information that we come across.

Verizon releases minor update for the Galaxy S5

Galaxy S5 owners on Verizon are going to receive a new software update today but it’s not what they’ve been waiting for, Android 5.1 is yet to be released for Samsung’s handsets. The largest carrier in the US has actually released a minor update for the Galaxy S5 which retains the core OS version but makes some tweaks to the software.

Verizon is rolling out software version LRX21T.G900VVRU1BOD5 for Galaxy S5 owners on its network, the update will auto install the Galaxy Apps app store on the device as well as enable the fingerprint scanner for unlocking Microsoft Exchange accounts. That’s really all there is to this update, the rebranded Samsung Apps which gives you yet another option to get apps for the device, and the security and convenience of unlocking the handset if the user has a Microsoft Exchange account as a device administrator. The update is being rolled out over-the-air and should go live shortly for all Galaxy S5 users on Verizon.

Samsung’s focus on Tizen growth seen as a move to shift from Android

Samsung has been working very hard to promote and expand its Tizen operating system which still can’t hold a candle of Android when it comes down to features, app support and even name recognition. Android is truly a global phenomenon with over a billion people using the operating system in its various forms and manifestations. Samsung introduced its first Tizen powered smartphone, the Samsung Z1, earlier this year in India where it performed well above expectations. The handset was then released in Bangladesh where it exhibited similar performance, it actually accounted for 23.4 percent of the smartphone market in Bangladesh during the first quarter of 2015.

The company is now expected to unveil a new Tizen handset which it will release in more countries across the globe, such as China, Russia, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. Moreover, it’s also likely to release Tizen powered premium home appliances in the near future, Samsung has already released Tizen powered smart TVs, the Q9000 smart air conditioner and the Chef Collection Refrigerator this year. Samsung is also focusing on increasing developer support for this platform by holding events in major countries, the Tizen Developer Summit India 2015 is scheduled for next month and in September it’s going to host the Tizen Developer Conference in Shenzhen, China.

According to a report Samsung is also working to make a software development kit or SDK public to further boost developer support for the platform. Many believe that this is part of a long-term effort by Samsung to end its reliance on Android particularly for smartphones and tablets. However it goes without saying that an immediate switch to Tizen is not feasible at all since there’s a massive app gap between the two platforms, and Tizen is as yet not tried and tested on high-end flagship models. For the foreseeable future Samsung is going to stick with Android.

Samsung to flip the switch on LTE-X for Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge soon

There’s a new report out today which claims that Samsung will soon release a software update for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge in Korea which is going to flip the switch on LTE-X, through the update it will bring Multipath TCP simultaneous network transmission technology to the handsets allowing data transfer speeds to reach as high as 1.17Gbps, speeds that conventional LTE networks can’t even reach.

Multipath TCP radically increases the data transfer speed as it brings together both the 300Mbps Cat.6 LTE network and the 802.11ac Wi-Fi network at the same time, allowing theoretical speeds to reach up to 1.17Gbps. However in real life scenarios the speeds are expected to vary between 300 – 400Mbps which itself is up to four times faster than conventional LTE. Samsung is reportedly going to release this firmware update in Korea within two weeks as the country’s carriers gear up to support LTE-X. The company hasn’t said if this update will be provided in other regions as well, then again, it’s not like carrier support for this feature is widely common at this point in time.
