Samsung app reveals Galaxy Buds 2 will copy an Apple AirPods feature

Samsung’s next Unpacked launch is less than a month away if we’re to believe all the signs, and we will see the company unveil a new pair of wireless earbuds at the event, along with new foldables and smartwatches. Of course, we already know quite a bit about the Galaxy Buds 2 and those other upcoming products thanks to a crazy amount of leaks, and we’re now learning some new details about the earbuds through Samsung’s very own Galaxy Wearable app.

New Galaxy Buds 2 details come straight from Samsung

The Galaxy Buds 2 haven’t launched yet, but Samsung is already preparing the Galaxy Wearable app so it can support the new earbuds whenever they hit the market. A developer was able to dig deep into an upcoming update to the app and extract some juicy details, and one thing in particular is quite interesting. It seems Samsung will be copying a feature from the Apple AirPods: Users will be able to use active noise cancellation (ANC) when using just one Galaxy Buds 2 earbud.

That feature will probably make its way to the Galaxy Buds Pro and the Galaxy Buds Live by way of an update. The same goes for the new granular touchpad controls discovered in the newer version of the app: Samsung will allow the user to individually disable or enable touchpad actions such as tap, double tap, triple tap, and touch and hold on the Galaxy Buds 2.

Unfortunately, it seems the app’s code contained no option to select between high and low levels of ANC nor the 360 Audio feature that was introduced with the Galaxy Buds Pro. However, it’s possible these features do exist but aren’t visible just yet. The Galaxy Buds 2 will likely have all of the functionality of the Galaxy Buds Pro out of the box, unless Samsung wants to keep a few things exclusive to the Galaxy Buds Pro so it can continue selling both products.

Also revealed by the app is a yellow color for the Buds 2 that wasn’t known until now. Previously known color options, including black, green, violet, and white have also been confirmed, though the green version spotted in the app is a little different from what leaked renders have shown us. Samsung has also redesigned some parts of the Galaxy Wearable app, such as the battery stats screen and the Find my earbuds section. Finally, the app also lists the Buds 2’s battery capacity: 61 mAh in each earbud and 472 mAh for the case.

This key feature of Galaxy Watch 3 just got even better!

Samsung started deployment of another notable update for the Galaxy Watch 3, only weeks ahead of the highly anticipated launch of its successor. Identified as release R845FXXU1DUE4, the new patch has been spotted in India on Friday. Among its handful of improvements are optimizations targeting the built-in blood oxygen (SpO2) monitor of the device.

Blood oxygen monitoring all but guaranteed to remain a staple feature of the Galaxy Watch 4

The new Galaxy Watch 3 update also makes the wearable more accessible by adding support for headset voice guidance during exercise. Thus streamlining a number of its use cases and underlining the standalone nature of the device. Not that having it connected to a smartphone 24/7 was a prerequisite beforehand, mind you.

The patch is reportedly just under 80MB in size and should make for a more refined wearable experience on account for general stability improvements and bug fixes also mentioned in the changelog. You can check whether the download’s already available in your area via the Galaxy Wearable app.

In related news, don’t forget to tune in for our coverage of next month’s Galaxy Unpacked that’s promising to be the biggest one of the year. Especially as the Galaxy Watch 4 is among the new gadgets that Samsung is expected to launch, and we’re hearing it’s going to be quite an upgrade compared to the previous model.

Samsung strikes deal to manufacture mobile phones in Pakistan

Samsung Electronics is looking to expand its mobile device manufacturing capabilities in Pakistan. The company has reportedly entered an agreement with Lucky Motor Corporation — a joint venture by Lucky Corp. and Kia Motors — for the purpose of manufacturing phones locally.

According to a notice from Lucky Motor Corporation, the company will manufacture Samsung mobile phones at its automobile plant at Port Qasim. The factory will, of course, be repurposed for the task.

80% of all mobile phones sold in Pakistan could be manufactured locally by 2022

Samsung’s decision to start manufacturing phones in Pakistan has a lot to do with the government’s Mobile Device Manufacturing Policy (MDMP) launched last year. The Ministry of Industries and Production created the MDMP program to strengthening the local economy and facilitating growth in manufacturing.

The program aims for 80% of all mobile phones sold in Pakistan to be manufactured locally by 2022. That won’t mean 80% of all Samsung phones sold in the country will be manufactured by Lucky Motor Corporation, but a large chunk will.

This strategy will hopefully allow Samsung to have a stronger local supply chain. In turn, lower production costs should lead to more affordable launch prices for mobile phones in Pakistan.

Building phones locally should help the company remain competitive, especially since Chinese rivals such as Vivo, Oppo, and Realme already have manufacturing plants operating in Pakistan.

Galaxy A01 back to receiving regular security updates post-Android 11

The July 2021 security update has started deploying to the Galaxy A01, three months after the entry-level device started making the jump to Android 11. Labeled by PDA version A015MUBU4BUG2, Samsung’s newest software release has made its way to Brazil, where it started reaching Galaxy A01 owners earlier today. Expect the rollout to go global in a matter of days, as that tends to be the case.

Looking at the wider picture, the July 2021 security patch level is rather widespread by now. It has been deploying across the planet for a couple of weeks, encompassing 94 device models in 33 countries as of today.

Expect the July 20 21 security update to land on your Galaxy A01 soon

Not keen on waiting for the new software to reach you on its own? That’s understandable, and fortunately, not the only option at your disposal. To start with, try initiating an installation yourself by going to Settings Software update > Download and install. Due to obvious reasons, this option is most likely to work if you’re located in Brazil, or another country wherein the rollout has already begun.

But if that doesn’t work and you have a Windows machine at your disposal, there’s also the option of downloading full system images containing the new software from our firmware archives, then manually flashing them to your device. Just don’t forget to back up your data in that case. Oh, and as for the security update at hand, the July 1st patch level is a pretty big deal for Bluetooth vulnerabilities, as per Samsung’s own summary of its contents.
