Samsung brings Korean content to its My Galaxy app in India

Samsung’s My Galaxy is an all-in-one app that offers access to free videos, music, games, news, and more to Galaxy customers in India. Though the app is also used for services such as Samsung Care, Samsung Upgrade, coupons, etc., entertainment has become its primary focus. By partnering with various media companies, Samsung has built an impressive catalog of free content for its customers in the country.

The Korean company is now expanding My Galaxy’s media catalog by adding some exclusive content from its home country. It has partnered with KBS Media to bring popular K-drama titles Jugglers, Queen for Seven Days, and Manhole to the My Galaxy app. Along with these shows, the company has also added more than 750 K-pop songs from top bands and artists such as BTS, Exo, BTOB, MONSTA-X, etc.

Samsung says the younger generation in metros and tier-1 cities are showing increased interest in Korean content and the company is trying to address that with these additions. It claims there are more than 20 million My Galaxy app users in India. While the app cannot compete with the likes of Netflix and Spotify in terms of content, the fact that it is free should be appealing to many of its users.

“We value the interests and taste of our consumers and there is absolutely no doubt about the growing popularity of K-pop culture in India. Keeping in mind the evolving entertainment needs of Indian millennials, we are delighted to bring K-content on our My Galaxy app. Samsung customers can now access K-pop music and exclusive K-drama on their favorite Samsung smartphone. We are confident that the famed K-content will resonate well with our young consumers,” said Pramod Mundra, Senior Director, Samsung India.

Here’s how to save at least $200 on the Galaxy S10

Samsung will fork out a minimum of $200 in trade-in credit for your old, busted Android handset if you reside in the US. That includes antiquated devices with a chipped frame, cracked screen and other signs of wear and tear; while those newer, and in better condition, will fetch a higher amount.

There are a number of caveats, though. The handset you’re sending off must turn on and have been wiped clean before it reaches the factory. We aren’t talking about making sure there aren’t any suspicious stains on the screen here — all data on the device must be removed by way of a reset.

And don’t be thinking in you can pull a fast one and trade-in a smartphone that technically doesn’t belong to you. Samsung will conduct a thorough check on the IMEI upon receipt to make sure it isn’t blacklisted in any countries around the world, before applying the trade-in credit to your account.

Lastly, the manufacturer will only let you trade in one device per purchase. So if you want to snag yourself a Galaxy S10 or Galaxy S10+, we’d recommend sending off the latest and most expensive device in your collection, as that’ll serve the best chance of fetching a higher trade-in value.

Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A30 certified with ARCore support

Google has added two more Samsung handsets to the list of devices that support ARCore, the company’s software-based augmented reality (AR) platform. The recently launched Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A30 are now certified to deliver a good experience with AR applications.

Over a dozen of Samsung devices support ARCore. This includes the company’s Galaxy S and Galaxy Note flagships from the last few years, as well as several A series and J series phones. The Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J5 Pro received ARCore support earlier this year.

Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A30 receive ARCore support

ARCore is Google’s platform for building AR experiences for mobile devices. ARCore apps can superimpose virtual content on the real world when viewed through the handset’s camera. Users can move that virtual content simply by walking around with their device or using the sensors to detect movement. This is achieved by using ARCore’s motion tracking technology to determine both the position and orientation of the phone as it moves through space.

Since ARCore is a software-based feature, support can be rolled out for older devices as well. However, Google needs to check the quality of the camera and motion sensors before certifying a device. The CPU power and design architecture of the device is also tested to ensure that it performs as expected. Also, ARCore requires Android 7.0 or later.

The Galaxy A50 is powered by the Exynos 9610 SoC, whereas the Galaxy A30 runs on the Exynos 7904 chipset. Both devices come with Android Pie out of the box, and feature the same 4,000mAh battery with 15W fast charging support.

Samsung publishes details of the April 2019 security patch

Samsung has released the security patch details for April 2019. The company releases monthly security maintenance updates for many of its devices to fix vulnerabilities in Android OS as well as its own software. The April 2019 security patch should start making its way to compatible devices in the next few days.

Fixes five critical Android OS vulnerabilities

As always, the security maintenance release for April 2019 also contains fixes for several bugs, including five critical and dozens of high-risk Android OS vulnerabilities. One of the critical Android OS vulnerabilities fixed could enable a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on a target’s device using a specially crafted file in the context of a privileged process.

In addition, this month’s security maintenance release also includes patches for 15 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items. One of the bugs could allow unauthorized users to disable some protected features without any prior authentication via Emergency mode. The new security patch adds authentication procedure before it starts Emergency mode. A smartwatch bug that allowed devices to show Secure Folder notification content in smartwatches has also been fixed.

Samsung have been pretty quick in releasing monthly security updates lately. The April 2019 security patch should also start rolling out soon. Samsung’s flagship handsets are most likely to receive the update first.

You can now use Google Duplex on the Galaxy S10

Google Duplex — an AI-driven robot, who can call facilities like restaurants to make reservations on your behalf — has begun its much-anticipated rollout for non-Pixel-branded handsets in the United States, starting with the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+, according to XDA-Developers.

The feature first launched alongside the Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL in October 2018, when it was restricted to just four cites in four different states in the United States. Now, six months later, it’s still only available in the region — but has expanded to a total of 43 more states.

Google Duplex is one of the most interesting developments to come out of Google’s Mountain View HQ in a while, letting users instruct Google Assistant to contact a restaurant, among several other local businesses, and make a reservation on their behalf for their desired date and time.

Duplex retrieves the contact number from Google Search, then uses AI to have a real-time conversation with the establishment’s receptionist, as showcased in the video below. It’s all a bit eerie, with the lady on the other end of the line being none the wiser to the fact she’s speaking to a robot.

But that’s the future, right? Soon enough there will be a robot on both ends of the line.
